- "Mimban? That planet should not exist. Mud like that could drive you mad."
- ―Lando Calrissian, to Chewbacca
Mimban, formally known as Circarpous V, was a swamp planet located in the Circarpous sector of the galaxy's Expansion Region. Situated along the Nanth'ri Trade Route, it was the homeworld of several intelligent species, including the Mimbanese. For many decades, Mimban was the site of conflict between its natives and mining interests attracted by the planet's deep hyperbaride mineral deposits.
During the Clone Wars, the Mud Jumpers of the Grand Army of the Republic's 224th Division helped the Mimbanese Liberation Army repel the invading Separatist Droid Army. Following the rise of the Galactic Empire, the 224th returned to Mimban as part of the Imperial Army to subjugate the Mimbanese and ensure Imperial energy mining operations continued unabated, which put them into conflict with their erstwhile allies.
Description
- "Had to do a job on Mimban once, it's a swamp planet and no matter how warmly you dress the cold and the wet find a way of getting in."
- ―Imara Vex
The planet Mimban,[14] formally known as Circarpous V,[9] was located in the Circarpous sector of the galaxy's Expansion Region,[3] in grid square O-12 on the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] Located in a remote star system,[3] it was situated along the Nanth'ri Trade Route[6] between the[15] worlds[16][17] Kerev Doi and Batuv.[18] It had a dense, ionized atmosphere[3] whose thunderstorms made the planet's sky perpetually overcast, while its marshlands were always draped in mist.[19]
A humid world, Mimban's surface was covered in rainforests and swamps.[3] The planet possessed valuable minerals,[20] including deep hyperbaride deposits.[3] The climate began to be devastated from the Confederacy of Independent Systems's indiscriminate mining practices,[21] with a great deal of mud beginning to form on world during the Clone Wars.[22][23] Mining by the Galactic Empire during the Imperial Era continued to devastate Mimban's climate.[20]
History
The Clone Wars
- "You're listening to the Grand Army of the Republic broadcast, the Voice of the Outer Rim. This next one goes out to the Mud Jumpers of the 224th, slugging it out on Mimban. Keep your heads down and your seals tight, boys."
- ―Hologram VJ
Mimban was ignored by its neighboring worlds for most of its history, having been deemed too uncivilized and wild to colonize. However, mining interests were attracted to the planet by its hyperbaride deposits.[3] In 22 BBY, the first year of the Clone Wars,[24] Mimban was invaded by the Confederacy of Independent Systems[3] due to its mineral wealth.[20] The Mud Jumpers of the Grand Army of the Republic's 224th Division armed and trained the Mimbanese Liberation Army, promising them freedom once the Separatist Droid Army was repelled.[3] The Clone Wars started Mimban's status as a constant battlefield.[20]
The 501st Legion[23] and the 224th Division's Mud Jumpers under Jedi General Laan Tik fought on the planet. In addition the Republic trained and assisted the Mimbanese Liberation Army in repelling the Confederacy of Independent Systems' Droid Army.[3] In addition to the clone trooper units, Representative Jar Jar Binks was sent to interact with the Mimbanese. During the fight, General Tik was killed and the clones were forced to fall back. Representative Binks was left in command.[23]
At the Republic camp, Captain Rex learned that the droid's deflector shield generator was three klicks away. Rex decided to contact command, mark the landing zone, and have a extraction shuttle sent to pull his men out. However, Rex then decided to take out the shield generator by himself. One of his troopers and Binks followed him. Rex then fought several battle droids, but was shot. Binks, using General Tik's lightsaber, was able to save Rex. Rex took the lightsaber away from Binks for his safety and continued on his own to destroy the deflector shield generator. The two pushed forward, and Rex had handed Binks his DC-15A blaster rifle and continued to fight with his DC-17 blaster pistols.[23]
Age of the Empire
With Mimban, at least in theory,[7] controlled by the Galactic Empire[11] via an occupation in 10 BBY,[25] swamp troopers and wet-weather gear stormtroopers of the 224th Imperial Armored Division were deployed on the planet to battle Iasento and the Mimbanese Liberation Army,[19] who opposed the Imperial conquest of their homeworld.[7] An Imperial prisoner named Cassian Andor served on Mimban for one of the factions of Liberation Army; he was in the army as a cook. He was one of only 50 survivors of the campaign in his unit, which he later declared had been fighting against who should have been their allies. He spoke of serving on Mimban while en route to the planet Aldhani and claimed he saw action.[26]
After he was kicked out of an Imperial Academy, Han Solo was reassigned to Mimban.[27] During that time, his commanding officer, Major Staz, was killed. Eventually, Han was framed by Tobias Beckett as a deserter. Lieutenant Alayus Bolandin punished him by throwing him to Chewbacca,[7] a Wookiee in a makeshift execution pit,[28] but both were able to escape Mimban with Beckett's crew.[7] During her time in the Hunters of the Outer Rim competition, bounty hunter Imara Vex claimed that she had once carried out a job on Mimban, during which she tried to dress warmly but still failed to hold back the planet's damp, cold weather. She also saw firsthand how numerous threats could emerge from the world's swamps, which forced her to keep her rifle on hand. Vex remembered the Mimban job with a suit of armor and rifle she used in the Hunters competition.[13]
Behind the scenes
Development
- "Bog Planet—We used it in the [Foster] book and was one of the original ideas [in the earliest Star Wars scripts]. It could be the place where Luke Skywalker learns."
- ―George Lucas
Mimban was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in "Rookies,"[22] the fifth episode of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season,[30] which originally aired on October 24, 2008.[31] Originally created as the Bog Planet in the earliest scripts of the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope,[29] it first appeared in Splinter of the Mind's Eye, a 1978 Star Wars Legends novel written by Alan Dean Foster.[32] Concepts for Mimban were later reused for Dagobah in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.[29]
Early concept art for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story used Mimban as a setting, before Jedha was developed to replace it.[33] The planet appeared in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.[19] For a time in the movie's production, it was considered to make Mimban a planet with an aquatic, swamp-like surface.[34] According to script writer Jon Kasdan, the film's crew wanted to evoke Stanley Kubrick's 1957 anti-war film Paths of Glory and put Han Solo into the most hellish-possible war environment.[35]
Discrepancies
Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition stated Mimban was in the Circarpous system of the Expansion Region,[4] while The Rise of Kylo Ren 4 said the Minemoon of Mimban was located in the Mid Rim.[5]
