Comm/scan, also known as ComScan or Com-scan, was a form of sensor technology used to detect energy readings and approaching starships. Both the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic as well as their respective successors, the First Order and the Resistance, made use of comm/scan technology.

History

The Galactic Empire utilized ComScan technology to detect the deflector shield protecting Echo Base on Hoth prior to the Battle of Hoth.^[3]

The Alliance to Restore the Republic utilized comm/scan technology on Endor. Shortly following the Battle of Endor, Hera Syndulla learnt that comm/scan detected a pair of surviving Imperial TIE Fighters heading to attack the Ewok village, and so took the Ghost to intercept them.^[4]

The 204th Imperial Fighter Wing's flagship after the Battle of Troithe, a modified bulk freighter called the Yadeez, was equipped with a comscan station, which was manned by Lieutenant Heirorius. During the prelude to the Destruction of Fedovoi End as part of a 'second' Operation: Cinder, Heirorius reported no replies or signals from the threatened breakaway world, but rather spiking energy readings indicative of ion cannons being powered up, when asked by Shadow Wing's Colonel, Soran Keize. The New Republic Star Destroyer Deliverance, which was under the command of Syndulla during the Hunt for Shadow Wing, was also equipped with a comscan station, manned by a Cathar girl named Dhina. The vessel was destroyed, whilst the Yadeez was crippled and set adrift, during the climactic Battle of Jakku at the end of the Galactic Civil War.^[5]

The Resistance had comm/scan technology on D'Qar, using it to determine the quantity and size of starships comprising the First Order's attack force during the evacuation of D'Qar. The First Order later used comm/scan to home in on the signatures of emissions given off by fleeing U-55 orbital loadlifters attempting to reach Crait, and gunners were able to shoot down several of the escaping craft.^[2]
