And now for something completely... something

Quick bday wish to the always awesome, yet recently very absent joannacullen! I miss you!

Watch closely, f-list, as I embark upon a post in which the slightest blink or misdirected glance will make it appear as though I have a booming social life.

So, I've been busy these past couple of days. Busy packing and getting everything ready for the new school year I leave for this Sunday? Pssh. Yeah, and Lou Dobbs loves immigrants.

I've been spending a lot of time at my sister's with the kids before I leave until winter break. I also spent a day in Baton Rouge with cassieology. I promised I'd check out her new apartment before I went back to school. IKEA definitely looks good in a place, I must say. The drive there went by quicker than I expected. It helped I had some stellar new tunes to listen to on my iPod. The road to Baton Rouge is one of 2 hours with some extra minutes thrown in. It goes by faster when you learn to set up little markers. Mine include: (1)The town of Egan, which I always like to pretend is called "Egon" (2)The Lion's Den - the well-advertised adult shop down I10 (3)Lafayette - almost there (4)Atchafalaya Basin Bridge - the main thing between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, the seemingly perpetual length is really a Twilight Zone episode waiting to be made. Somebody, get on that.

The drive back from Baton Rouge is that, only, you know, backwards.

When I got home, I ate a quick lunch. Today is my sister Staci's birthday, and I wanted to take her clothes shopping. I had seen some stuff at Sears.com on clearance that looked cute last week, and figured I'd offer to take her to see if she wanted to go and get herself something. She was up for it, but, with Staci, most of the time spent doing something with her is actually waiting for her to get in the damn car. This is why one never leaves the car running when picking her up. We didn't take long, or rather, she didn't take long. It's pretty pointless to encourage her to look through more stuff. But, at least I got her to the store and she did find a couple cute shirts. (I also got a few myself.) I know it seems kind of like cheating to take the person shopping for their gift, but with Staci, it really is the best idea. If you get her a gift card, there's the high likelihood she spends it on the kids -- if she gets to the store to spend it at all. So, if you do give her a gift certificate, you've got to make time to chaperon her.

Her husband told her they'd go out to eat with the kids. He said that my other sister and I were coming. She thought that was it. She didn't know until we met at the restaurant that 20 more people coming to surprise her. She was pretty surprised, so that was nice. Though, I'm pretty sure Chili's was praying the crew never returned again. We do like to make our mark.

It seems the only talk I'm hearing right now is about Gustav and where it's going to hit, if it'll become a hurricane again, etc. I fly out Sunday, which is a day or two before they think it'll hit. They still don't know where. But, hearing your family members talk about memories of evacuating for Hurricane Rita and where they plan on going this time isn't the most comfortable thing to be leaving behind. This is just one of those situations when time will truly tell. Hopefully time tells a good tale.
