A lot shorter this time 😁

What I've recently finished reading:

In eyeball, Echo of Worlds by M. R. Carey, the second book of the Pandominion duology. I liked it and thought it was a good conclusion to the set-up of the first book. Also, I just realized it's basically Mass Effect 3 with the Synthesis ending, which I guess makes Paz Female Shepard...okay, not really. But the theme of organic intelligence and machine intelligence coming to terms with each other is a relevant theme in these days of "AI" growth.

In audio, Heaven's River by Dennis E. Taylor, the fourth Bobiverse book. I really loved this one, even though there was a bit of idiot-balling at the climax - why would you go through the town to get to the transit station, instead of going around it and coming in from the other side, when you know your opponents are looking for you?!?! But otherwise it was a well-assembled story, another "first contact with an alien race" narrative with some interesting twists. The bits and pieces of the separate storylines come together in some surprising ways at the end. And heh, it's the same theme in a way, machine intelligence and human intelligence and human-mapped-into-machine intelligence. I'm looking forward to the fifth book!

What I'm playing (again):

No, not replaying, I never do that 😁 but I had not started up Ghost of Tsushima since before my first bit of spring travel back in late March, so even though I was just about to do the final quest of the second part of the game, I noodled around with some random sidequests (freeing fishing villages from their evil Mongol overlords) for a few sessions, until I felt ready to free Castle Shimura. Now I'm out the other side and ready to complete the last act of the game!

It's not an exaggeration to say that my entire fifty-song list hinged on my choice for 1993. This was the year that had the greatest number of favourite songs by favourite bands vying for a single space, and whatever I slotted in had a domino effect spanning almost forty years as I prioritized finding other spots for the bands that didn't win out.

Was 1993 just a stellar year for Canadian music? Possibly. I think in general there was a maturing alternative sound in the air, not just in the mainstream breakthrough of grunge but people doing interesting things with folk, country, adult contemporary, and what used to be called college rock. There was a lot of accessibly different stuff out there getting radio play.

But I think it's mostly just that I was nine years old in 1993, had my first job (delivering the Pennysaver), and had the money to buy cassettes for myself for the first time. I had a hand-me-down Walkman too, and even though I'd got it because the tape player part had stopped working, it still functioned as a portable FM radio. My sister was old enough to have a proper after-school job, and she brought even more new music into the house that I was eager to borrow. Totally with permission, every time.

In short, 1993 was the year I started discovering my own music, and nothing hits like that.

Settling on Crash Test Dummies was partly a practical choice based on the logic puzzle I inadvertently created for myself and partly because God Shuffled His Feet just still thoroughly delights me as an album. And this song in particular seemed a fitting one to share thirty-some years later in my life.

I keep thinking about how for the Bicentennial they put all this effort into doing maintenance on historical sites and improving exhibits instead of censoring, damaging, and destroying them as Republicans are doing now.

The Bicentennial was fun. Was America perfect then? Far from it, but there was a real celebration of Freedom and focus on the complex history instead of a concerted effort to kill democracy on the part of one political party.

I am furious that Republicans are using this as one more way to attack the things that are good about this country like Democracy and diversity and social progress.

I literally can't live on just over $500 a month. Hardly anyone can. That's what they are planning to do though. Cut SSI payments nearly in half.

The reason the funding is drying up is because of tax cuts for the rich, like the Bush Era ones that capped contributions for the wealthy so they only have to pay a fraction of their income everyone else pays.

A really easy start to fixing this would be to repeal all the tax cuts for the rich done in my lifetime starting with the ones under George W. Bush.

* We are in primary season. States vote at different times, so I beg ALL of you to check when your state is voting. If you are in an in-person vote state, research ahead of time so you can vote for the candidate with views closest to your own. If you vote by mail, take the time to look them up when your ballot comes.

THIS is how you move the party further LEFT.

PLAN YOUR VOTE!!!

Primary schedule here:

* "2026 Statewide Primary Calendar:" https://www.270towin.com/2026-state-primary-calendar/

I don't know where you live, so I can't link this for you, but I find the Progressive Voter Guide online very helpful in narrowing down candidates in the often packed primaries where I live.

I also suggest looking at things like volunteer work and endorsements, because it really, really helps with things like sheriff and judicial elections, but can be useful in all sorts of primaries when you have multiple good options.

REMEMBER: Don't just vote for the big things like US Congress. Vote in every State and local race down to the smallest and on all the referendums.

State and local elections have a massive impact on your quality of life.

* Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina! Don't forget to vote June 9!

* Alabama (Runoffs), District of Columbia (Primaries), Georgia (Runoffs), Oklahoma (Primaries)! Don't forget to vote June 16!

* Maryland (Primaries), New York (Primaries), South Carolina (Runoffs), Utah (Primaries)! Don't forget to vote June 23!

First I will say that The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden is out now, for those of you intrigued by slightly-supernatural-alternate-history Anne of Brittany. (I reviewed it here from a NetGalley ARC)

Second, hply sjot has it really been a month and a half since I've posted here? Well, I've been traveling a lot. But being on a lot of airplanes means I've also read a lot. (And I probably should have taken notes, because I'm squinting at these book titles and trying to remember what they're about...) I swear I started this post on Wednesday, but...it's taken a while to finish!

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson Sort of an AU Triwizard Tournament in a Hogwarts with many more Houses )

Timeline by Michael Crichton Time traveling archaeologists, right up my alley )

A Voice Like Mine by Deb Haaland Political memoir of former Secretary of the Interior, current candidate for governor of New Mexico )

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig Sliding Doors trope, entertaining but predictable )

The Beheading Game by Rebecca Lehmann Basically 16th Century RPF fanfiction in which Anne Boleyn wakes up the day after her execution )

Infinity Gate by M. R. Carey Space opera except with multiple AU Earths instead of multiple planets )

A Marriage at Sea by Sophie Elmhirst An odd sort of biography about two unpleasant people getting shipwrecked, I guess )

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang Entertaining YA-ish slum kid goes to military school that turns to grimdark Sino-Japanese War Fantasy AU )

The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey I was not expecting zombie apocalypse )

Platform Decay by Martha Wells Yay more Murderbot! )

I'm teaching a one-week writing workshop in early August, but otherwise, I am officially free of teaching duties as of yesterday afternoon. What shall I do with all this "free" time? Ha.

Well, besides reading, writing, fitness activities, hiking, writing letters of recommendation, developing new lessons and curricula, and back-breaking yardwork and gardening, I am pledging to try one new recipe out of an actual, physical vegan cookbook each week and to do some cemetery exploring.

In the spirit of beginning as I mean to go on, I celebrated my summer break by making three new-to-me recipes last night, two of them from cookbooks. I modified the Prospect Park Potato Salad from the Veganomicon, by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero; modified the Asian Slaw recipe from Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home; and modified this recipe from the internet for German potato salad. (Can you tell I was craving cold salads and potatoes?) I'm pleased to report that they all came out quite tasty, though it took a little getting used to eating warm potato salad. I picked up some garlic sauerkraut to go with it, which I shall try with tonight's dinner.

Next on my list is an edamame and corn recipe, also from the Veganomicon, which I picked up used at an antiques and collectibles store.

Quick note that post-by-email and comment-by-email is (sometimes?) failing silently without actually posting right now! I'm pretty sure this is related to last night's shenanigans and will be fixed once Mark can finish the full fix for it, which he's working on, but if you've posted or replied by email in the last 24 hours, fish it out of your sent folder to check if it posted!

EDIT: This should be fixed as of around 7AM EDT! We *believe* everything that was stuck in the plumbing has been sent along to your journal or the comment thread it was meant for; it's definitely not where it was stuck anymore, at least.
Greetings from my last week of teaching duties before summer break! Despite the work being exhausting and sometimes disheartening, there is something to be said for the reward of precious time. I have so many plans for just living a healthier life during my break, hopefully inculcating some new(ish) habits to make me healthier during the work year.

I hope whatever your week has been like, you'll feel comfortable sharing your ups and downs with us here. I look forward to touching base with you each week.

My Week in Review )

May the week ahead be full of time for you to spend on yourself. :-)

Robby has managed to put in a temporary fix for the site errors and things failing to refresh or not showing up where they should! The permanent fix is going to need Mark's experience, and unfortunately -- seriously, this literally never fails -- Mark has been on an international flight all day, because of course he has. (Never. Fails. He and I are not allowed to both take vacation at once.)

The site will work just fine with the temporary fix in place, things just might be a little slow here and there. We'll keep you updated.
