A few HR recs
Jul. 6th, 2026 11:55 pmtender by bysine. Shane is an Ottawa bureaucrat (procurement officer) and Ilya a retired hockey player coaching teens for a charity and grappling with the procurement system. Funny, sweet, great characterisation.
Unlikely Animal Friends by Distractivate - Zookeepers AU! Ilya works with apes and Shane's a coral expert. Great writing, funny, touching. (no animal harm or death)
No Friction, Just Chemistry by Vee - Farmer’s Market AU. Ilya makes pickles, Shane makes artisanal lube! Lovely details, romantic and funny.
And for something completely different, coffeeinallcaps an author I like very much who writes very hot, shortish, character-driven fics with excellent dialogue and characterisation. Four fics so far, all excellent. "i was born out in the cold" (Ilya-centric) is especially good.
In other news, I wrote another HR fic Just My Bloody Luck (Shane/Ilya) - magical realism (magical pussy acquisition) and crack treated seriously.
I'm somewhat hammered by various deadlines, but also keen to finally start a fic I've outlined (working title "Soft Dads") which I imagine will have an audience of 2 people and a dog (or less), as it'll be gen, about a developing friendship between David Hollander and George Grady (Kip's dad). I feel Kip's dad got shortchanged in the show when Scott called Kip down onto the ice for THE KISS. But that's just a small part of the fic. Now I just need to carve some time out from reading everyone else's excellent fics!

Fannish Expertise
Jul. 5th, 2026 03:27 pmReturning to Price’s examination of fannish information behaviours, we are introduced to four related areas that this research can contribute to. One of them being education, which is, in a sense, a negotiation of different information behaviours in as much as learning is acquiring new information and organising and using that information in certain ways.
Price brings examples from the scholarship of more explicit learning relationships in fandom: that of creative writing - and game modding mentors.
However, as we have already addressed the unique information behaviours of fandom, these behaviours are also learned in some way. This less explicit and formalized learning of less easily defined skills or information defying easy categorization might be more telling about fandom.

Me-and-media update
Jul. 5th, 2026 01:14 pmI've been relatively slack about masking lately (supermarket always; other public situations, it depends on how busy it is, how well-ventilated, and what quality of interaction I want to have). So far I've escaped unscathed. *knocks on wood* *tries not to pathologise my low-level tiredness*
Previous poll review
In the Reading speed poll, 55.8% of respondents estimate their reading speed as faster than average, which ha, is probably about right, or maybe on the low side given Dreamwidth's self-selection. One fifth of respondents went for "average", and 23.1% said "it would be faster if my so-called attention span didn't keep dropping out."
In ticky-boxes, raindrops (48.1%) came second to hugs (65.4%), followed by stripes waiting for a cat (44.2%). Thank you for your votes! ♥
Reading
Slowly listening to Borders of Infinity by Bujold, read by Grover Gardner with Andrew, mostly while doing the dishes.
The only thing I've read in text is a beginner story in Chinese about a stray cat who's found a home. It's sliiiightly above the "see Spot run" level, but not much.
Kdramas/Cdramas
We're watching the last two episodes of Miraculous Brothers tonight, and I'm really hoping it'll stick the landing. If it does, I might do a write-up. It's a good show, and I can see it appealing to people who aren't regular Kdrama-watchers too.
Still rewatching Love Scout with Pru. We're nearing the end.
And on my own, I'm watching The First Frost (Cdrama), which is pathologically repressed m/f roommates-to-lovers. Both of them are skittish for reasons, and I'm enjoying every tiny crumb of progress. I'm about halfway through. (Note: the leads are super pretty. There's probably AI-enhancement going on, blah, but I'm (thankfully) mostly oblivious to that and trying not to think about it.)
Other TV
Wow, it's been a month!! Not that we've been watching a huge amount, but still.
We finished Blocco 181 season 1 (gangs, drugs, interracial tension, m/m/f threesome), watched all of The Other Bennett Sister (really excellent! A+!) and The Tourist season 2 (Irish-Australian black comedy about a hitman with amnesia; season 1 is set in small-town Australia, and season 2 is set in Ireland), and have just started season 2 of Blocco 181 (so far plenty of gangs, drugs and interracial tension).
Sitcoms: Dinosaur (Glaswegian woman with autism and her sister), Fisk (socially awkward Australian and her law office), and People of Earth (support group for "alien experiencers," with Wyatt Cenac).
My sister and I are watching White Collar season 1, awwww.
Once we've finished Miraculous Brothers with our friend, I think we're going to try Legends (hapless customs agents vs drug traffickers in 1980s Britain).
Online life
I have five bursting-at-the-seams browser windows open, which is three too many. I'm going to give myself an amnesty and cull them. | Saw on Instagram a reference to Deepstash (socmed with factual content from books instead of AI slop). I think it was in an ad, though, so who knows? Anyone? It's paid, so I couldn't just give it a try. Not that I have time for another platform anyway. I'm already not quite keeping up with Dreamwidth (but almost). *waves to you all*
Writing/making things
I finished a flashfic (of the niche interest variety), and in the week since posting it have written approximately a dozen words of fiction, total. Like, I poked briefly at the "flashfic" I was writing before that, but mostly it's been rewatch comments and political submissions. Basically, writing and I are on a break. (But it's not long till
Life/health/mental state things
I got three political submissions in last week. The last one was just four paragraphs of yelling/scolding, but still.
I'm spending infinitely more time on my phone than I did pre-Chinese, and thanking the stars for my stylus. (Against the odds, I haven't lost it, but I did buy a back-up shaped like a pencil and another backup shaped like a ballpoint pen and incorporating a real ballpoint, a flashlight, and an alleged phone stand that doesn't work (but not a digital clock, because this isn't the 1980s) for $3.50 each, just in case.)
House/car
( State of car, storage/organising, and the oven saga continued. )
Language Learning
( Cut for length. )
Goals
One more political submission to go (graaaaar).
Get the oven in this year, and maybe re-carpet the living room(???).
Get my Chinese reading level up to Elementary by my birthday.

Reading in a new-to-me language (magic!). Biking weather. The gradual imposition of order on my house. Andrew, Halle, my sister, my friends. Hope for the upcoming NZ election (it could go either way, so there is room for hope). TV-watching dates. A wealth of Asian media.

Your Go-To Piece of Criticism: Mel Stanfill
Jul. 2nd, 2026 03:50 pmThis week’s “Go-To” piece of criticism comes to us from Mel Stanfill - currently the editor of Transformative Works and Cultures and author of books such as Fandom is Ugly (NYU 2024) and Exploiting Fandom: How the Media Industry Seeks to Manipulate Fans (U Iowa 2019). Their choice: Cathy Cohen’s 1997 article, “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” Mel also sent us a picture of their own, well-loved copy! –FC

Cohen, Cathy J. 1997. “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies 3 (4): 437–65.
I often say Cathy Cohen changed my life. Reading “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens” in grad school was the first time I really got how intersectionality worked—how structures of inequality create stratification even within marginalized groups.
That has been essential to my thinking about how fans—although they may be treated as weird by the mainstream, although they may be women, although they may be queer—show that there are “varying degrees and multiple sites of power distributed within all categories” (p. 439), and particularly how fans’ marginalization along some axes often suppresses attention to fandom racism.
–Mel Stanfill, Associate Professor in the Texts & Technology Program, University of Central Florida

Transcription of Excerpt:
Despite the possibility invested in the idea of queerness and the practice of queer politics, I argue that a truly radical or transformative politics has not resulted from queer activism. In many instances, instead of destabilizing the assumed categories and binaries of sexual identity, queer politics has served to reinforce simple dichotomies between heterosexual and everything “queer.” An understanding of the ways in which power informs and constitutes privileged and marginalized subjects on both sides of this dichotomy has been left unexamined.
I query in this essay whether there are lessons to be learned from queer activism that can help us construct a new politics. I envision a politics where one’s relation to power, and not some homogenized identity, is privileged in determining one’s political comrades. I’m talking about a politics where the nonnormative and marginal position of punks, bulldaggers, and welfare queens, for example, is the basis for progressive transformative coalition work. Thus, if there is any truly radical potential to be found in the idea of queerness and the practice of queer politics, it would seem to be located in its ability to create a space in opposition to dominant norms, a space where transformational political work can begin.
Emergence of Queer Politics and a New Politics of Transformation
Theorists and activists alike generally agree that it was in the early 1990s that we began to see, with any regularity, the use of the term “queer.”1 This term would come to denote not only an emerging politics, but also a new cohort of academics working in programs primarily in the humanities centered around social and cultural criticism (Morton 121). Individuals such as Judith Butler, Eve Sedgwick, Teresa de Lauretis, Diana Fuss, and Michael Warner produced what are now thought of as the first canonical works of “queer theory.” Working from a variety of postmodernist and poststructuralist theoretical perspectives, these scholars focused on identifying and contesting the discursive and cultural markers found within both dominant and marginal identities and institutions which prescribe and reify “heterogendered” understandings and behavior. These theorists presented a different conceptualization of sexuality, one which sought to replace socially named and presumably stable categories of sexual expression with a new fluid movement among and between forms of sexual behavior (Stein and Plummer 182).
Through its conception of a wide continuum of sexual possibilities, queer theory stands in direct contrast to the normalizing tendencies of hegemonic sexuality rooted in ideas of static, stable sexual identities and behaviors.

hot dogs with vinegared iceberg and potato chips

So while the Smitten Kitchen’s very first hot dog recipe isn’t a recipe for making hot dogs, phew, it is a recipe for my favorite way to prepare them. And on this, as with so many other things, I’m full of opinions.
