I’m a courier, I pick up packages from customer service offices, and deliver it to their customers. We use an app that in part tells us when deliveries are ready for pick up, lately it’s server has been down for an hour or four over night, meaning deliveries set up over night aren’t being processed […]

Read Holy Cannoli, That’s A New One

I work at an Italian restaurant. A small company is having an employee dinner at our place. There was one young woman excitedly rereading every word on the entire menu right up until it was her turn to order, when she asked:
Customer: "What kinda pasta is 'preemeeces'?"

Twenty years ago, one of my wife’s sisters and her freshly-married husband, both fully Polish, did what many people from central Europe did back then: go to the US for several months to work and earn some extra money (at the time, doing a mundane job could earn one five times what one could make […]

The Rec League: Sapphic Urban Fantasy

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old bookThis Rec League is from Nicole in the SBTB Patreon Discord:

They’re looking for sapphic urban fantasy (not necessarily paranormal romance). They specified they’re looking for urban/big city settings with a mystery or noir vibe.

Amanda: I recommended the Kate Kane ( A | BN | K | G ) series by Alexis Hall.

Shana: I loved Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk, ( A | BN | K | AB ) which is definitely noir.

Susan: Kate Kane and Even Though I Knew the End were my first thoughts too

Shana: Deadline by Stephanie Ahn ( A ) might work. Masc heroine, urban fantasy set in NYC.

Oh, and how could I forget The City We Became by NK Jemisin ( A | BN | K | AB ) where the boroughs of NYC are personified and need to learn to work together to fight the Big Bad. The Bronx is lesbian Lenape woman in her 60s and I adore her.

What books would you recommend? Leave them in the comments!

Update: Swapped out the ouzo for vodka, added a squeeze of that single fresh lime Mum gave me the other week, and . . . that’s a pretty good variation on a Moscow Mule, hey.

then I'm ready for October. If I wanted Florida, I would have stayed in Florida. I do not like Florida type weather (okay it's tolerable in Jan/Feb) Ugh. This is why I'm thinking the SW to Snowbird to when I'm older.

Today feels like I accomplished nothing. I cleaned the computer room more. Dropped the task chair on my big toe and made it bleed. Cut the base of my left thumb open on god knows what. Cleaning sucks.

Got rejected from one vampire open call. Plan to look this one over and send it to the new vampire one. It's historic and I think that is really a hard sell in a lot of places.

What I Just Finished Reading:

Our Sisters Keeper - a very weird own voices black magic setting in the 1920s, has some serious creepy vibes

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End vol 1 - A lot of my friends love th is so I did buy vol 2 even though I was kinda bored with this. It's a neat idea. Frieren is an elf so she is going to way outlive her adventuring partners and she is trying to find a way to connect...I guess. I dunno. I didn't much like her so...

Sleeping on Paper Boats (Kami no Fune de Nemuru) I just happened to get drawn in by the cover and for a second I was going to pass because as much as I love queer fic I am NOT a a BL fan and this is BL based on the manga line SuBLime manga. Ha. My problem with BL is how hard SO much of it leans into the ABO omegaverse stuff. I dislike ABO, hard. Also as someone who has had it happen more than once with a NO being heard as a yes I find that shit triggering.

That said this was really interesting to me. It's horror/romance and I am looking forward to getting the next volume.

What I am Currently Reading:

The Death Card - currently struggling to get into it

Cloak and Dagger Club - a post WWI mystery that I'm enjoying so far

June 10 - Yard service or no?

Brought to you by me doing both front and back yard (I try to split days on them) all today to beat the rain:

If you are responsible, directly, for the upkeep of a yard, do you do it your self or have a service?

I used to have a service. Then they started either coming too often or SAYING THEY CAME and trying to bill extra. And then I had a pair of older ladies supplementing retirement. But then when one of them moved, I got myself an electric lawnmower and I've been doing it since.

I managed a session at the gym. I managed some cooking for future lunches and breakfasts. I realized that while some of the letters I need to annotate are missing the years, if the person wrote down the day of the week, there's only so many years where they lived at this address and, for example, April 22 was a Thursday. There's not many, but there's enough I can feel good about realizing I had an additional piece of metadata to use. I added a thousand words to the present work in progress.

I'm not happy with how little work I did today.

I can live with it if I manage better in the coming days.

I have watched The Vampire Lestat ep 1 & it was SO FREAKING GOOD, omg! I haven't been on Tumblr in the last few weeks, so I have no idea how the fandom responded, but I loved it. Looking forward to the new ep Sunday. (I need to make a new icon.)

books
Dark Olympus #10: Shattered Gods by Katee Robert. 2026. Kind of a disappointing end to the series, tbh.

The Fix: Saving America from the Corruption of a Mob-Style Government by Barbara McQuade. 2026. Rather long, but a thorough manifesto of things that need to be fixed.

1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World by Liaquat Ahamed. 2026. Not as accessible as I'd hoped. Also, far more Euro-focused than I'd hoped.

yarning
I have a commission for seven US flag catnip-silvervine balls and I am so blocked. There's no excuse for this, except ADHD and chronic pain. (Drat.) And today I got a commission from my cousin for another bunny. Gotta do the balls first. Sigh.

healthcrap
2 nights in a row now without taking (1mg) melatonin and still sleeping at a semi-reasonable hour. I had slightly more energy today. I'm ready to start feeling better any minute now?

#resist
June 14: Anti-Trump concerts across the country.
June 27: protests

I hope you're all doing well! <333
