Oof I haven't updated in forever. I keep meaning to! I have trip pictures and fandom things to talk about but I just haven't sat down and made the time to actually write an entry. When you go a month without updating, it just seems so hard to get back into the habit.

But I've been under the weather for a couple of days and yesterday I spent most of the day in bed and binge-read two books, and it's been so long since I just sat and read. It was fantastic. Besides the feeling ill part of things.

I used to always have a library book on loan digitally, but since the last few times I'd checked things out, I ended up returning the books without reading them, I had nothing in the app to turn to. But my library app has this section called "Rainbow Reads" for queer books "resonating beyond pride month" and none of them had wait time so I dove into that!

I read Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters (finally!! It's been on my to-read pile forever) and Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon, probably two of the most opposite novels I could pick in the queer category. One historical, character-driven, beautifully written, focused more on queerness and queer women and blurring gender lines with a deft hand and one a plot-focused thriller with gay men, focused more on setting up the dominoes just right to tumble over quickly so you don't see the twist in the road (not exactly successful, but it tried!) and therefore lacking real meaty character work…. But I devoured them both. One will stick with me and one will probably fade in my memory as time passes (I'm sure you can guess which is which) but that doesn't so much matter. It was just really nice to get lost in books again and remember how much I enjoy reading.

Have y'all read anything good lately?

In fandom news, [community profile] bbtp_challenge is officially back and I still can't believe it's been running for 16 years now. I have an idea of what to write thanks to [personal profile] torino10154 and [personal profile] pauraque brainstorming with me but now I have to conquer actually writing, always the toughest job.

I have not read Tipping the Velvet, but I have read National Velvet, and have had to patiently remind myself on many occaions that these two books are not the same book. Though they both do involve women who defy gender roles!

Yes, that would have been from the era of my childhood in which I did not read any novels that were not primarily about horses or dogs. Though I certainly would have been very interested in a novel about Victorian lesbians who pass as men to become jockeys, if such a book had existed.
