So it occurs to me that, regardless of how the current cycles of "oh wow so the OTW is pretty fucked up internally" shake out (which
synonymous is v helpfully collecting for anyone who's lost track of the many threads of discussion) it might be beneficial for us all to work on our abilities to find & share fic via avenues other than Ao3 tags.
This is not a how to quit Ao3 list—plenty of the rec communities, etc are full of Ao3 links and that's absolutely fine—but even if comms are currently pretty Ao3 heavy, they'll be a lot more resilient long term should fandom decide to diversify where fic is posted or even be forced to pivot to other platforms (
dawn_felagund has some discussion of the downsides to everything being on Ao3 in her tribute to the Library of Moria from 2020.)
melannen has posted a guide to making a neocities backup for your fic: How To Make Your Own Fanfiction Archive, In Just 10 Easy Steps
I've seen several people mention backing up their fics to SquidgeWorld as well, in part because they have easy Ao3 importing (update: there is some discussion of how easy this importing actually is down in the comments)
rainbowfic is an original fiction writing community
Update: Tei has no set up a webring for neocities mini-archives
Update: for non fic hosting, there is apparently vidders.net & audiofic (note that audiofic appears to primarily mirror podfics posted elsewhere, so a good choice if you're a podficcer looking to back up your Ao3 collections)
Update:
independence1776 maintains a List of Online Tolkien Fanfic Archives
Update: for Star Trek fic there is Ad Astra :: Star Trek Fanfiction Archive
Update: the fanficfare Calibre plugin has compiled a list of every fiction hosting platform they are aware of for the purpose of stating whether or not the plugin can support them. The plugin itself looks v handy for downloading & organizing fic if you're a Calibre user, but even if not there's a lot of sites they support worth checking out!
If you know of Dreamwidth communities or independent archives which host fic, please link them in the comments! Even if they're single fandom or even single person, it'd be great to get a directory going.
fancake is a "thematic multifandom recs community" which picks a new theme to rec around each month. It's a lot of fun! Also, the largest reccing community I'm currently aware of
recsrainbow (+archive
rainbow_mod ) appears mostly defunct unfortunately but has a long list of independent reccing communities
recs any fandom, no themes or other criteria for posting besides liking the thing
recthething accepts both rec posts and reccomendation requests!
fffriday is a weekly femslash recs coms
gensplosion any fandom gen recs
vidrecs vids! Accepts "any fandom, of any length, genre or rating. If you think it's a vid, it's a vid and you can rec it"
tozka put together a fanfiction rec resource list back in 2019 which may or may not still be relevant
merit_brush_recs is a (currently very quiet) recs community for guardian fanworks
Several fandom specific noticeboard communities support recs and self-recs as well either directly to the comm or through weekly/monthly roundup posts:
sid_guardian,
c_ent,
queerly_beloved,
paradisediner,
theuntamed_mdzs, and presumably many others I can't think of off the top of my head—please share yours in the comments?

Ao3 has no inbuilt options for exporting your bookmark links, despite pretty much every other bookmark manager supporting imports & exports--if you know of any 3rd party tools for this please share in the comments!
nianeyna's ao3downloader is a bulk downloader for Ao3 fics which supports the same list of formats as Ao3 does. She offers a "get all work links from an ao3 listing" which I'm planning to test on my bookmarks import them to Raindrop.io (Update:
cyberbrain has now tested! see their post here for more info)
epub.press—if you know you're going to miss Ao3's easy download work options, epub press is a browser extension for firefox or chrome which will turn a collection of browser tabs into a single ebook for download onto the reader of your choice. Offers both .epub (the most popular standard for ereaders) and .mobi (what kindle books, or other readers designed for amazon books, uses) downloads and a choice between a direct download or download via email.
Update:
flamebyrd built a AO3 Works List CSV Bookmarklet if you just want a spreadsheet of links to port elsewhere.
Update: dotepub is another option for converting webpages for ebooks.

Date: 2023-06-02 10:48 am (UTC)(FTR, I signed up for Squidgeworld last night, but then I watched this (2-year-old-so-possibly-out-of-date) video about importing from AO3, and it looks a bit more complicated than I'd hoped. Unless things have changed in the last two years, you have to do the tags, etc, manually, and delete a lot of kludge out of the body of the work. Jsyk.)

Date: 2023-06-02 01:56 pm (UTC)You mentioned dawn_felagund, but I didn’t see a link to the Silmarillion Writers Guild (unless I missed it? If so, apologies!).
There’s also the Ad Astra Fanfiction Archive, currently on the beta subdomain (while the main domain still points to the efiction site) but that will change later this year I understand.
These aren’t fic archives, but it’s good to remember that the Audiofic Archive and Vidders.net are still around too.
And dotepub has a bookmarklet and so works on mobile (or embeddable JavaScript if you want to put it in your own site) to convert pages to epub too.
Epub press sadly does not work very well with LiveJournal (haven’t tested with DW yet) as several pages gave me an rss placeholder, so I ended up editing in the html using source and calibre’s epub editor. (Actually, calibre is great for downloading fic as well with the fanfic fare plugin and setting up the library something like this easy fanfic library.

Date: 2023-06-02 02:17 pm (UTC)Nope, I forgot to include it, thank you! And thanks for the other links as well (absolutely interested in non-fic fanwork sites)
huh thats odd, wonder what causes it to fail like that. I saw they had some disclaimers that it doesn't do well at saving eg. fic posted in kinkmemes but i didn’t expect that to extend to actual entries….
I am not on calibre, but that plugin looks great :D

Date: 2023-06-05 02:57 am (UTC)I am absolutely not a pro with FanFicFare but I know people can do really cool things like even email it with fics they want downloaded; pretty neat! (So, forwarding a subscription email would work.)

Date: 2023-06-03 09:21 pm (UTC)In the long run, I think the best thing we can do is to avoid putting all our eggs in one basket—the OTW's poor choices wouldn't have been so devastating if we had other options to turn to when they refused to change. So, no relying on the same org for archive hosting *and* legal advocacy *and* fandom history *and* exchanges (and probably even having multiples of all of those things too, if possible)

Date: 2023-06-04 08:27 am (UTC)Personally, I won't give up on the OTW yet, but I think it's good that fandom is diversifying a bit more again. I'm also in the process of building my own homepage and a community here on DW as well as crossposting to other sites.
I'll drop you a link once my archive is ready for visitors to stare at the "coming soon" pages if that's all right?
no subject
Date: 2023-06-04 02:14 pm (UTC)Yeah diversifying things is I think just a net win regardless of everything else, so I’m pleased to see it happening.
Please do! If you haven’t seen tei’s webring you can also join that if you’d like, to help more people find eachothers fic :)

Date: 2023-06-04 03:09 pm (UTC)Oh, your initial post is still one of the highlights of this debate for me :)
I feel very much the same
I've seen it, and once I have something to show for it, I'll definitely use it, too :)

Date: 2023-06-06 11:54 am (UTC)I've long been keen on diversifying and also bringing back ye olde personal fic archive website, so this post is 👍 My own site and archive started on neocities, and the platform is ideal for this.
I've since moved my site to my own domain, and my archive is here now. I've still got a lot of work to do, though, I have to say, I wish I'd started this endeavor years ago, it's quite an undertaking, reposting over a hundred fics 😳
I'm not yet through the comments, so apologies if someone has already brought this up, but it'd be cool to see some kind of filterable index for the new personal archives popping up, perhaps something we might see in the future 🙌

Date: 2023-06-07 08:40 pm (UTC)Same! While I haven’t enjoyed any of the recent revelations, I am hoping they’ll make fandom a bit more receptive to the idea of not just relying on one group for everything
