What is this unfamiliar feeling?

My parents have vaccine appointments for Monday!

I am so happy I can't even. I mean, I'll still be kind of worried until it's actually in their actual arms but oh my God, starting Monday the odds of my parents surviving the fucking plague will be really high.

It's been so long since I actually felt happy that I didn't recognize it when it happened and I felt sick to my stomach and dizzy and then I collapsed on the floor crying when I told my son and then I took a walk and ate a pastry and after that I just felt good. I mean still shaky, don't get me wrong. I'm not sure I should get used to this. This seems like a lot of feelings to be having and I was getting pretty good at the whole Vulcan thing.

So often we have no idea how much emotional pressure we are carrying around until some happy event like this lets us relax a bit. So glad your folks are getting the vaccine.
We are still waiting, M is 73 and has been staying more and more isolated at the Ranch. I'll be so, so glad when we can both get the vaccine.

Yeah, my folks are 73 and 74. My sightly older aunt and uncle in the South Bay got shots about ten days ago so I'm hoping M gets it soon too.

One side-effect of my mum's ending up in hospital is that she is coming out with a "phone for your vaccine appointment" letter despite being "only" 79 this Thursday. Dad is over 80 and has had his.

Wonderful! My mom is still waiting to be able to make her appointment in Michigan, but most of the older folks at my church have their appointments scheduled. It was such a joyous day last week when they all posted on Facebook one after the other about their appointment dates. (They are generally a tech savvy bunch and were on that website the second it went live.)

I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago and we agreed that we both keep getting sort of run over by feelings and we think it will get fairly extreme when we can see our families again.

That's wonderful news. I am still confounded by how far behind the curve we are here -- it is expected to be many months before seniors in the community are vaccinated -- my mother, who is 81 and lives independently, is assuming she may be waiting till fall. But I am so glad that things are going better where you are, and such relief for you!

Well, it's not really mysterious -- the Harper government slashed away at our research funding so massively that it has crippled our domestic pharmaceutical capacity (among other things). And we're a third-rate economic power, with a taxation structure not as friendly to corporate interests as some, so when, for instance, Pfizer has a production delay, they slow down shipments to the EU and the US, but they cut Canada out of shipments altogether ... Nevertheless, it feels very confusing to us here, where we have a usually well-founded expectation of robust public health measures.

It's bringing me so much hope to hear other people's vaccine announcements. Also I think that being openly joyous about this is the best way to convince folks who are on the fence to get vaxxed.
