Squadrons

Current Status

The Regiment is equipped with Challenger 2 Tanks and based at Tidworth in Hampshire. It is part of the 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade. Unlike the other Armoured Regiments, the RTR has an integrated CBRN Reconnaissance Squadron operating the Fuchs reconnaissance vehicle. Following amalgamation, the Regiment comprises six Squadrons:

AJAX – Challenger 2 Armoured Squadron
BADGER – Challenger 2 Armoured Squadron
CYCLOPS – Challenger 2 Armoured Squadron
DREADNAUGHT – Challenger 2 Armoured Squadron
EGYPT – Headquarters, Command, and Reconnaissance Squadron
FALCON – CBRN Reconnaissance Squadron (under 28 Engineer Regiment)

Ajax

As the first Squadron in the Royal Tank Regiment’s order of battle, AJAX take their place as the lead Armoured Squadron in the British Army. They are highly trained, motivated and ready to deploy on operations across the world. Proven experts on the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, AJAX combine bold and aggressive manoeuvre with precision gunnery and tactical guile. AJAX are capable, adaptable and ready for war.

Badger

BADGER is named after one of the Mark I Supply Tank’s of B Battalion the Tank Corps in 1917. It is this that brought about the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment convention of naming Squadrons after the OC’s vehicle. This tradition has continued and is sustained to this day.

Cyclops

CYCLOPS are experts in mounted close combat, battle-proven and now trained and ready to deploy on operations. Although we operate on the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank as our platform of choice, we are agile and can switch into several combat roles at a moment’s notice. We expend every effort to achieve excellence in all that we do. We work hard but we endeavour to have fun too. We face every task with fierce determination matched with a confident smile. We are utterly fearless.

We are ready to deploy anywhere, to do anything, willingly.

Dreadnaught

DREADNAUGHT is a term for a fearless warrior; the basis of the Squadron insignia. It also evokes the Naval heritage of the Armoured Combat Vehicle, being the term for a Great War ironclad and was once proposed as a motto for the Royal Tank Regiment. Our badge is Oxford blue and white in honour of the 4th Royal Tank Regiment, maintaining the Squadron’s link to Scotland. DREADNAUGHT is the Regiment’s newly formed Challenger 2 Squadron.

Egypt

EGYPT provides the Battlegroup and Regiment with its Command and Control through Command Troop and BGHQ, its eyes on the Battlefield through Recce Troop, and all its personnel and logistic needs through the G1/4 departments. It leads on all training delivery through the Training Wing to achieve the Commanding Officer’s intent. This is achieved through initiative, character and understanding, demonstrating good leadership at all levels whilst being competently trained and ready.

Falcon

As the independent Squadron our role is to deliver Chemical, Radiological and Nuclear (CRN) Area Survey and Reconnaissance (AS&R) to support divisional troops, in order to maintain friendly forces’ freedom of action. We deliver a protected mobility, counter-CBRN collective protection reconnaissance and survey vehicle, designed to detect, identify and mark CRN threats to the supported force. Each troop comprises three Fuchs, a Panther support vehicle and a Multi-Purpose Decontamination System (MPDS) carried on EPLS.
