Article about Erik Klipping textiles, Denmark, 1286 AD

*grins* No, I am not coming over to the dark side.

This just came out on the Yahoo MEDTC Discussion group and I thought I would forward it on via e-mail and then I realized that there's too many of you who would be into this. By the way, if you're into medieval and early modern clothing, dress accessories, and textiles (including tools and processes) that's an excellent group to join to keep up with current publications.

Here's the post.  Feel free to share. Enjoy!

In 1286 AD the Danish king Erik Klipping was murdered. He was buried in Viborg Cathedral and some bits of textile has survived.   Have uploaded a pdf-file and an english translation to: http://www.tabletweaving.dk/?Publi…  Look at the second last article.

The article was written in Danish in Viborg Stiftsmuseums yearbook. I have made a translation (language corrections are wellcome!) and I have now got the museums permission to opload the article. Hope You like it.

From the Bodleian Library website

Description and further catalogue information from the website:

Watercolours of garden fruits: strawberry, gooseberry, cherries, plums, damsons, date, apricots, nectarines, peaches, apple, pears, quince, hazel nut, grapes. There are 66 surviving pictures (sometimes including insects, birds, etc.), plus one inserted picture of a lily (fol. iv verso). They are arranged, species by species, roughly by date of ripening during the gardener's year. Earlier 17th century (after 1611, perhaps 1620s).

sanity...

... is staying at a B&B in the Okanagan before going to an SCA event.  I am starting to get visited out.  Back to work on Tuesday!

Oh and in a first, this B&B is not owned by a gay couple and as such not frou frou victorian.  I find it hilarious that when I select a B&B from the internet, I always end up with a male couple owning the place and lots of dolls and victoriana.  Such a sterotype.

This place rocks, it has kitties, llamas, chickuns and those grape vine things.  Suite is amazing and cheaper that staying at the local hotel!  Yay internet.

The strange things I am looking for

I am going to try to make fake amber beads and fake coral beads this summer.  As such, I am now starting to look for the ingredients required.  A lot of these are used in making period scribal supplies so if that's your thing - please read on.

I need colophony (pine rosin), cherry gum, roche alum, white horn of a cow, raw linseed oil, dung, saffron and ball shaped moulds.

I am also looking for amber resin for putting into my filigree beads for scent.

I found a canadian online source for the colophony and the raw linseed oil -
http://www.kamapigment.com/asp/mai…

I found some amber resin in the States -
http://www.somaluna.com/cat/powder…

And these guys used to sell cherry gum *sad face* - http://www.zecchi.com/pag1.htm

I am thinking of substituting just plain alum for roche alum and if so, then it's not a problem to find as it is a dyeing mordant.

I think for the saffron I can just visit Chinatown (when in Vancouver next) and get Spanish saffron pretty cheap.

I am totally at loss for the white horn of a cow - if I remember well Tandy Leather sells bull horns but they are kinda brownish.  EDIT - found some here but they aren't mostly white - http://www.hideandfur.com/inventor…

Dung, that should not be a problem - I will just go visit the owner of the horses on Matevic.

And for the ball shaped moulds.. no idea.  Only found some huge ones for soap making online.  I want something more in the 15-30mm diameter range

Advice, experience, anything appreciated.

For those who asked me when I would finally make something for myself

I humbly present my rosary reproduction gallery.   An excerpt:

Reproduction based on the rosary from Rogier van der Weyden's The Magdalen Reading.Reproduction based on the rosary from Rogier van der Weyden's The Magdalen Reading.

Of course the above was Chris' birthday gift from last year, but the others, well I can claim them all as MINE! (somehow I think C may borrow the skull rosary which I may allow on a short term basis)

More to come over the next couple of days...

Another one bites the dust...

playswithsheep is Sina aka Cinara mka Lisa!

For those who do not know her, Sina is a fabu person and enormously talented(although to her face I always tell her she sucks - even when she got called to be put on vigil for her Laurel at KA&S earlier this month).

She makes her own parchment which explains her sick sick name...

FRIEND HER!

I am very proud of my husband

Click here to see the top sekret project he has been working on for the past two months - step up clothes for TRH Stein and Gemma.  He is bringing both outfits to display at KA&S next weekend.

I helped him with the chemise neckline embroidery - from this I learned that I do have a distinctive style of embroidering.  I meant to have smocking done on the sleeves but unfortunately that was a tragic failure on the first attempt.  Thus HRH wore ribbons around her wrists to gather up the sleeves.  I will perfect my technique and fix that hopefully in time for the display but I am not holding my breath as I want to make a lattice-work pearled partlet for it as well plus write a paper for school and a capital money request for 500k (work stuff)...  *smiles*  but it is a long drive there so who knows.

About the event this weekend - it was awesome.  I am not very good with words but it was very touching and heart-felt on many levels that tend to not affect a cynic like me.  I am a very lucky person to have friends like you all. *mwah*  Too much to say, too little brain bandwidth.

Tomorrow, Chris is back, then we are going home for 2 days.  KITTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then KA&S, then home for a week, then back to work for 2 weeks, then home for a few days, then off to vancouver, then to the danescombe academy event, then back to work for a week, then 3 weeks off which includes May Crown!

Jet set?  Nah.

funny how some things come back

I haven't embroidered properly in a long time.  By properly, I mean in a frame all tensioned up and putting said frame in my stand and using adequate lighting.

Wow, makes everything so much prettier! *shakes head at this weekend's aborted attempts using a tension hoop*

I am about 40% done on my top sekret project.  Well not that sekret, you will see pics after investiture.  I think I may even have time to figure out smocking too (funny enough I own a book on that and I haven't purchased a single book in 3 months!  psychic I am!).  *so excited*

I need to do more embroidery, I do enjoy it although I got annoyed at C when he switched the TV to a show with captions only.  Made me so frustrated!  It would have been a cool show but I kept making weird mistakes that I had to undo when I looked up to catch up on the plot of the Chinese Muslim tightrope training orphans...

I do want to learn goldwork and make C a goldwork embroidered shirt as it is very German.   All that bullion and cool braids are so shiny!  I think I even have a book or two on that already...   Must finish his favour first though.  It is looking very cool too - not your typical dishrag type of favour at all.
