Earthquake Supplies w/pics
Feb. 19th, 2018 10:58 amThe project that ate my week.
This has turned into a really big project, mostly because I want to make absolutely sure it will last. Looking back I see I purchased and cut the pieces to size on Feb 8. Today my big achievement was getting the roof on. It required two visits to the local hardware/supplies store, one to get the "wiggle board" and an additional piece of roofing, and the other to get the right kind of roofing screws. Turned out that what I had was metal to metal screws and I needed metal to wood screws.
The patio was full of plywood and 2x4 pieces with paint drying on them.

Here is the base (floor) of the cabinet, upside down with the hardware cloth (wire) stapled to it. My theory is that if I seal the base of the structure so mice and rats can't easily get in, then I'll have less problems. In this picture one of the pieces of black plastic cut to go over the brick foundation can be seen. The plastic is to help keep water from moist bricks from traveling up into the framing. That is the theory anyway, I have no idea how it will actually work. Behind the base you can see the back wall.

The walls are up!!

The back corners now have trim and the roof is set in place on the wiggle board. The wiggle board is that wavy piece of wood the corrugated roofing is sitting on. I chose to use it to help keep mice and rats out, the roofing doesn't need it to work.

All it needs now is doors!! I think I have to go to Ukiah to get my stash of hinges.... Oh, I have to say that I LOVE the lichens on the fence behind the new cabinet. There was a great article (I believe in Cal Flora) about lichens, apparently they are not just a "plant" but a community of organisms.

One last view for context. Yes the roof will be painted. Not sure what color yet.

Date: 2018-02-20 03:12 pm (UTC)Some lichens aren't plants at all :) they're fascinating combinations. I really must find the energy to read the rest of my book on lichens. It's very technical...
