Get Up and Go & Hey
I have a theory, perhaps a dream, that these two songs are about a transsexual sex worker.
"Get Up and Go" has some fairly obvious connotations. "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed is a well-known song about a transwoman sex worker, and there can be no doubt that Hanson were aware of this when they wrote GUAG. I like to think the chorus is supposed to be a bit facetious - if a "girl like you" is a transsexual woman, and a "guy like me" is Taylor, a pretty openly effeminate man, then it all fits just perfectly. The rest of the song seems pretty blatantly about a sex worker to me, but I know many fans would heartily disagree with me. Some people may have a hard time letting go of a "pure" Christian goody image of Hanson, who are as complex as anyone else.
"Hey" is self-evidently about a sex worker, in my opinion, also. Certainly the same one. Red pumps and cadillac blues? Beverly Heights? Yesterday's prize? Come on. I don't really care enough to try to persuade anyone further, but if you listen to the lyrics, it all makes sense, more sense than any other explanation. What do you think? Put aside judgement about extramarital affairs for a minute. Maybe it's hypothetical and didn't really happen. Ive been thinking about this for years, and am bored enough to try to spice up this community of my fellow queers :D
