An introduction and some helpful links :)

 Hey everyone,

I will be working as an ALT in either Hiroshima or the Kansai area this coming spring. I have been to Japan before and as the only out Lesbian in Nagasaki (that I knew of) it sucked! So since then I have done a TON of research, even took a class at my university called "Queer Japan". So where are all the Japanese queers hiding? Well they are hiding... but once you find someone in the community, it gets much easier after that.

So here are a couple links I will share with you all. If you already know about them, sorry for repeating...

Utopia Asia is a site that is pretty up to date with gay and lesbian bars and queer friendly hotels throughout all of Japan, not just Tokyo. You can even meet people on here and create a profile but there aren't very many members so it's hard to get a reply... but! If we all sign up and post regularly we can change that :3

Out Japan is site that is meant for Japanese and English speakers alike, but alas there are more English speakers than Japanese on here. The plus side is that this site is frequently updated so you can usually get a reply or a friend request within the week instead of within the year.

I also have some specifically lesbian/ bi women websites that are in Japanese. Many of these sites are not as organized as facebook or even out Japan. You don't get a profile or anything, all you can really do is post and from that post you will exchange emails with someone who is interested in you and then decide if you want to exchange numbers, pictures, and eventually meet up. The site I'm posting here is the most updated one that allows people without a Japanese cell phone email to join. There are others that may be better but I can't access them as of now.

Here is a lesbian event I found through one of my groups on mixi...

It's a Christmas party in Tokyo. 12/25/2010 and is rather short, 8pm till 10pm. The exact location is not specified because you have to RSVP at the bottom of the site to get it however they tell you it's at a nice restaurant in Shinjuku. The cost is 4200 yen but it's for a full buffet, wine, Christmas cake and more. The dress code is like dress shoes and nice pants but you have to wear something that has some red or green in it.

So I hope that was helpful information and please feel free to friend me and let me know what your experience has been being queer in Japan :)

So, as I've mentioned a couple times on here  before my gf is planning to do the JET program and I'm to go with her to Japan.  She wants to do the translation training they provide to their second year ALTs.  Has anyone taken this?  Is it a good program?  Will it get you actual jobs?

New Year's Eve

This past New Year's Eve was the first New Year's Eve my boyfriend I spent together. My boyfriend is Japanese and I am American. I am completely out to all my family and friends. My boyfriend is a little more reserved than I am. However, everyone in his family has met me on many occasions as I am over his house often. Furthermore, mostly all of them know that him and I are in a relationship and love each other. This New Year's my boyfriend and I spend the coming of the new year with his family. It was so nice to eat secchi with his mom, to have drink with his aunt, to pray next to boyfriend at the alter set for his ancestors who have passed. He tells me his family is not perfect and we talk about the times members of family fall short of what we hopped. We do the same when talking about our family. We share times with each other when we feel we have both fallen short. Feeling included is nice. I am lucky to be where I am. 2009 is going to be fantastic.

Hi There,

My girlfriend and I are planning to go to Japan and live and work there for a year or two next year. I'm not entirely sure what the attitude is there in Japan. Is there going to be problems with two women in a romantic relationship living together? What I'm most worried about is that I hear it is considered strange there for anyone to indulge in public displays of affection. I don't know how I'll adjust to that. I live in Ottawa, Canada which is a fairly open city and I'm natural physical in how I relate to people, even friends and acquaintances. I think I'll be fine as long as at least holding hands in public isn't a social no-no...

Queers <3 Drama

Hello, awesome people!

This is a reminder that the new Tokyo International Players show, The Elephant Man, is going up this weekend!

I just came home from a final dress rehearsal, and let me say, this show is *fantastic*. The technical design is brilliant, and the acting? The acting is simply incredible. Bob Werley does this difficult dramatic character beautifully. Noel Adams and Rachel Walzer, the two other principals, go beyond their usually brilliant selves.

So, please, come on down. This is a show you will regret missing.

(I know no one expects quality English acting in Tokyo, but trust me on this one)

The Elephant Man
By Bernard Pomerance
October 12 at 7:30
Oct 13 at 2:00 and 7:30
Oct 14 at 2:00 and 7:30
at Shinjuku Sun Mall Theater (Please note this is not performed at TAC)

Based on the life of Joseph Merrick, this is a touching drama about a remarkably sensitive and intelligent man who is wrapped inside a hideously deformed body. This is an overwhelming story of immense human suffering, abuse and final salvation thanks to largesse, kindness and humanity.

Does anyone in or near Tokyo want to hang out?  I'm studying at a really small college and there seem to be no other LGBT people at the college and well it's depressing.  Really depressing.
