The problem with having a calendar that's visible to everyone in DARKLab is, predictably, that it becomes impossible for Pepper to carve out any time for herself during the workday. Most people are fortunately good about giving her a half hour or so each day for lunch, too embarrassed to take up her time if they notice her quickly working on a sandwich in her office but an hour other than that is free game. The increasingly connected nature of the workplace has made it possible for almost every move of Pepper's to be tracked.
Which, of course, raises its own concerns. It never escapes Pepper's notice that she may one way need to move on to a place with greater flexibility for its employees.
One of the only ways she's found to ensure that she can have an hour or two for serious work is to mark her calendar as busy and find a remote location to work. Being in the financial division means that she has to take great care in making sure that no one oversees the internal numbers, but fortunately, one of the cafes close to her office building has a great little alcove towards the back of the shop. With a wall to either of her sides, and no cameras that have a view of her screen, it's an ideal space to sip some coffee and crunch numbers. The soft, ambient music of choice doesn't hurt either.
She's just in the process of getting the annual forecast in for the next fiscal year when she receives a curious text from Fitz, the young man whom Tony had been fond of. She hasn't had much time to acquaint herself with him beyond the one party at which they were both in attendance, but it isn't for the lack of wanting. With a small smile, she passes over her current location, then quickly works to encrypt and close any confidential files on her laptop.
All in all, it's a nice change to the usual routine of her day.

It was Phil's arrival to Darrow which finally set Pepper's thinking into action. For many months, she had been viewing Darrow as a separate entity, a setting in which she had to carefully match herself with the expectations and customs of the natives. But as time went on, Pepper began realizing that there was less and less of a reason to distinguish herself from the people she knew and interacted with every day. Whether or not there was a deeper reason behind Darrow being constructed the way it was, on a daily basis, it didn't matter the people she passed every day were as wholly people as anyone she knew back home, and to operate under some assumption that they weren't was unfair.
As such, Pepper began paying closer attention.
The area that receives the most of Pepper's attention now is the organization that calls themselves Kirin, as well as the smaller group within, Kirin's Horn. She's been realizing with greater and greater frequency that many of her colleagues identify themselves as being a part of that organization, and listening to some of them speak about their motivations for being part of DARKLab has been illuminating. Some of them have what might best be described as a scientific interest.
Others are involved in an effort to keep up with some perceived race, making sure that their own people can defend themselves in the event of some indescribable disaster. It's a fascinating dynamic.
Which brings Pepper to her natural course of action calling Natasha to her apartment for a bit of a brainstorm. All that Pepper knows is that she doesn't simply want to be the observer on the scene anymore. Being passive can only be helpful up to a point.

Dec. 30th, 2014 12:34 amWhen making the decision to head up to Kagura for a couple of nights, Pepper only has a handful of people she's willing to consider making the trip with. What makes her extend the invitation to Natasha rather than Tony is the fact that she does want to keep her first proper trip up there strictly one of business.
Which isn't to say that things are all business between herself and Natasha. They're comrades, kindred spirits in many ways, able to smile and joke openly about mutual friends (and less than friends). But they're also less likely to spiral into an entire night of staying in and checking out the interior decorating of the suites, so to speak. If they do stay in all night, it'll surely be to comb the place through, checking for anything hidden, any indication of rigged technology or magic spells. Pepper doesn't really know about the latter.
"I assume that you've already done a good sweep of this place the first time you came, yes? I wish I could have earlier, but work's been so busy that it's hard to take time aside without potentially jeopardizing my position," Pepper says all in a rush as she drops her one bag down on one of the guest rooms of the lodge, with two queens side by side. "I did get a good look at the lobby, but if the lodge appeared overnight, it stands reason to think that some of the more interesting activity may happen in the middle of the night."
She looks over her shoulder at Natasha, smiling. "Or maybe I just wanted an excuse to get away from Tony for a night. But don't tell him that."
