Impetus was an article on the Defender website.
Just relevant to your interests. HR as well as some Dramione novels, 50 Shades, Ministry of Time, etc. all get mentions. Along with Jemisin and Novik.

I published a novel in 2012 that was Lotrips AU fanfic with the names changed so maybe I am ethically compromised for this discussion.
In any case the metafilter discussion started out interesting.
Thank you for commenting.

Date: 2026-02-07 12:53 pm (UTC)I don't have a problem with people effectively filing off serial numbers--most novels go through re-writes for various reasons. In the MeFi comments, someone called the fanfic-to-pro a "parasite" practice, but that doesn't make sense to me. I think it's awesome that you published your novel!
Many apologies for coming off negatively!

Date: 2026-02-07 01:50 pm (UTC)I have no problem with people not liking RPS or not liking it when people file off the serial numbers from fanfic and publish it.
Opinions differ.
But if your opinions evolve that's fine too. Right now I am kind of leaning away from RPS for HR because the criticisms of the actors' personal lives have started up so fast and so virulently, for example. Where I embraced it completely for LOTR.
I don't insist that people I interact with always agree with me. No worries.

Date: 2026-02-14 07:45 pm (UTC)I feel like the more fruitful direction to hare off in would have been to examine why these fic adaptations are getting picked up, and why more of fic culture, and the existence of fic, is getting put into novels and original stories, rather than sticking to the existence of the boundary, and the permeability of it, as if it were something new and fascinating for publishing houses.
Still, good article to read, even if it wasn't the one that I was hoping for.

Date: 2026-02-15 12:37 am (UTC)I am all the hands-over-eyes emoji when the mainstream internet and/or the mainstream magazine culture gets ahold of fanfiction. It rarely ends well. But I did want to point it out and I appreciate your analysis very much.
