Impetus was an article on the Defender website.

Just relevant to your interests. HR as well as some Dramione novels, 50 Shades, Ministry of Time, etc. all get mentions. Along with Jemisin and Novik.

One of the comments on MeFi is one that I would have made, that for me some of the beauty of fanfic is that it is clearly situated within the world of the originating media. If I can file off the serial numbers, it might be good writing but not good fanfiction.

The John/Carson I wrote for Secret Santa was a challenge, to look at the show through a different set of slash goggles, and it was really fun.

I'm sorry! I didn't give a time frame for "would have made". My feelings have evolved from the 2009-me's Very Strong Views. I don't know either.

I don't have a problem with people effectively filing off serial numbers--most novels go through re-writes for various reasons. In the MeFi comments, someone called the fanfic-to-pro a "parasite" practice, but that doesn't make sense to me. I think it's awesome that you published your novel!

Many apologies for coming off negatively!

The Defector article doesn't pull the other thread, the one that the MeFi commenters are, about how much commercial publishing is still not willing to give the audience for fanfiction what they want in commercial fiction, outside of some very narrow lanes and imprints. They do a decent job of pointing out that adapting fanfiction into original fiction muddies the relationships, as does treating fanfiction like a training ground for original fiction and suggesting that people not show their fic origins too much if they want to be treated as a serious author. It doesn't quite capture the spite and malice applied in the fic community to people who treat fanfiction as the kiddie pool, but it does at least quote someone appropriately about that attitude.

I feel like the more fruitful direction to hare off in would have been to examine why these fic adaptations are getting picked up, and why more of fic culture, and the existence of fic, is getting put into novels and original stories, rather than sticking to the existence of the boundary, and the permeability of it, as if it were something new and fascinating for publishing houses.

Still, good article to read, even if it wasn't the one that I was hoping for.

It doesn't, and I wonder if there's something structural in the way, like they can't report on fic grin anything resembling an accurate position because women are involved and often leading fanfic communities, or something.
