Der Skeptizismus ist eine traditionsreiche Position in der Geschichte der abendländischen Philosophie. Obwohl eine kritisch-reflexive Einstellung selbstverständliches Desiderat moderner Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft ist, scheint sie in Konflikt mit dem Streben nach epistemischer und moralischer Orientierung zu stehen. Diese Spannungen zwischen Skepsis und Praxis können von der pragmatistischen Philosophie aufgelöst werden. Begrifflich ist zu unterscheiden zwischen ›Skepsis‹ und ›Skeptizismus‹: Während Erstere als propositionale Einstellung, als gewöhnlich-kritische Haltung, stets intentional bleibt, sich also auf bestimmte Aussagen als ihr Objekt bezieht, erhebt der philosophische (...) Skeptizismus den Zweifel zum universalen Prinzip und weist in systematischer Form Wissens- oder Rechtfertigungsansprüche zurück (vgl. Heidemann 2011, 2676–2677). Gemeinsame Merkmale der unterschiedlichen skeptizistischen Positionen sind dabei die Charakterisierung der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung als fehlbare Erkenntnisquelle, die Infragestellung vor allem absoluter Wissens- und Wahrheitsansprüche, die Ablehnung eines Wahrheitskriteriums, die Zurückhaltung in der (moralischen wie epistemischen) Urteilsbildung sowie die Formulierung skeptischer Argumente und Hypothesen, um andere Positionen zu kritisieren oder zu dekonstruieren. "Die Logik der Erfahrung" stellt eine Systematisierung der wissenschaftsphilosophischen Gedanken der klassischen Pragmatisten (Charles S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey) dar. Die pragmatistische Erfahrungstheorie sowie die Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Theorie und Praxis bilden die Grundlage einer holistischen Wissenschaftsphilosophie, deren Aktualität durch die exemplarische Anwendung auf klassische wissenschaftstheoretische Fragestellungen gezeigt wird. Die AutorinTina Massing ist Akademische Rätin am Institut für Philosophie der Universität Koblenz. In ihrer Forschung beschäftigt sie sich insbesondere mit wissenschaftsphilosophischen Themen und dem Klassischen Pragmatismus.

Im pragmatistischen Gedankengut kann man durchgehend, wie Suhr es für das Werk Deweys zusammenfasst, von einer „Revolte gegen den Dualismus in seinen verschiedenen Formen“ (2005: 147) sprechen. Einer der Dualismen, gegen den alle klassischen Pragmatisten opponieren, ist der von Theorie und Praxis, der das Thema dieses Kapitels bildet und schließlich zu einer grundsätzlichen Charakterisierung von „Pragmatismus“ führen soll. Dabei werde ich zunächst eine historische und anschließend eine systematische Betrachtungsweise erörtern.

Im klassischen Pragmatismus bildet Wissenschaft keinen eigenständigen oder überlegenen Zugang zu den Dingen, sondern gewöhnliche Erfahrung geht der logisch strukturierten, wissenschaftlichen Beschreibung immer voraus. Der Mensch ist in natürliche Prozesse eingelassen, insofern spielen die Naturwissenschaften zwar eine große Rolle (insbesondere auch als methodologisches Vorbild, das Experiment und Fallibilismus beinhaltet), sie werden aber dennoch nicht reduktionistisch als einziger Zugang zu den natürlichen Phänomenen postuliert. Ausgangspunkt der Methodologie sind also der Primat der Praxis und ein spezifischer (nicht-szientifisch-reduktionistischer) Naturalismus. Die wissenschaftliche Theorie wird (...) dann als begrifflich vermittelte Reflexions- und Abstraktionsleistung der gewöhnlichen Erfahrung verstanden, die durch Rückkopplungen aber stets mit ihr verbunden bleibt. In seiner Logik kennzeichnet John Dewey dieses Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und »gesundem Menschenverstand«. (shrink)

Die Grundgedanken der pragmatistischen Philosophie, die insbesondere durch das Praxis-Primat und die Kritik dualistischer und reduktionistischer Epistemologie zu Tage treten, werden durch ein Erfahrungskonzept integriert, das als einer der Kulminationspunkte des Pragmatismus gelten kann. Die zentrale Stellung des Erfahrungsbegriffs wird im ersten Unterkapitel (3.1) erläutert, indem das Primat der Praxis als das Primat der Erfahrung reformuliert wird. Mit dem Erfahrungsbegriff verändert sich auch dessen Reflexion in einer erkenntnis- und wissenschaftstheoretischen Perspektive, was durch den Vergleich verschiedener Empirismus-Formen (3.2) gezeigt werden kann. This article deals with a set of images which were probably the first in history to be reproduced on four continents: the Jesuit Jerome Nadal's Evangelicae Historiae Imagines, first published in Antwerp in 1593. It begins with a brief discussion of what we know about Nadal's life and the production history of his book, as well as its relationship to his Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia quae in sacrosanto missae sacrificio toto anno leguntur, which acts as a commentary to the (...) Imagines. Then follows a description of the structure of the two books, and how they narrate and expound the significance of the Gospels. The remaining sections discuss the adaptations of Nadal's imagery. While his work has received much attention from scholars around the world in recent decades, the aim of the present article is to bring together research on the use and re-use of these images in Europe, the Americas, India, China, Japan, Iran and Ethiopia, and to make clear their global impact in a way that has not been attempted before. Die Grundlagen einer pragmatistischen Wissenschaftsphilosophie, die ich dargestellt habe, lassen sich m. E. in zahlreiche Debatten überführen. Der Ausblick erläutert anhand von drei Themen (Anti-Szientismus, Erfahrung und Logik, wissenschaftsphilosophische Diskurse) zusammenfassend die aktuelle Relevanz und besondere Stärke des pragmatistischen Ansatzes sowie exemplarische Anwendungsmöglichkeiten. Damit zeichnet sich der klassische Pragmatismus schließlich als eine moderne Wissenschaftsphilosophie aus.

The dualism of knowledge and values as well as of the objective and the subjective views has accompanied the social work profession from its inception and presents a particular dilemma for the link between academia and practice. It is either that academia is split off from the practice of social work, or that these two fields of professional activity merge into each other. Either of these solutions impoverishes the profession. The key for the understanding of this dilemma as well as (...) its resolution rests with the particular ontological definitions adhered to by the profession. It is proposed that by fostering the moral ontology the dualism inherent in the nature of the profession may enrich it and a fruitful link between academia and the practice of social work will evolve. The arguments presented as well as the resolution proposed are illustrated by theoretical explanations, empirical studies and clinical practice in the area of the parent-infant relationship. Hallucinations do not originate in a single region of the brain, the thalamus, and cannot be traced back to a single pathological mechanism. They emerge from the complex interaction of several brain regions, and are not necessarily the result of sensory impairment or the effect of a defective filter. In the case of schizophrenia, hallucinations are accessory symptoms, in Bleuler's sense, and are thus not central to this disorder.

A conception of parental experience is proposed to enhance the move of the study of parenting into the interpersonal realm by describing parental subjectivity from the parent's point of view. Explanations are based on that which the parent can be accountable for, on parental dialogues with observers/clinicians about their dialogues with their infants. This conception of parental subjectivity is compared with other conceptions which define parental subjectivity as the mental apparatus of the parent and not as representing the evolving relation (...) of the parent with the infant, and with explanations which consider parental reports in terms of the parent's psychodynamics and cognitive abilities rather than in terms of the on-going dialogues between themselves and their infants. The paper introduces a typology of parental dialogues with observers/clinicians about their dialogues with their infants, within the context of the non-verbal nature of the infant's communication. The findings from empirical examinations of this typology are presented, and their implications for the proposal that the study of parental relations with their infants should consider the parent's accountability are discussed. O artigo examina o paradoxo cético no chamado “Kripkenstein” à luz da psicologia ecológica, uma teoria cognitiva que tem como base tomar como unidade de análise os organismos juntamente com seus ambientes. O conceito de affordance, também basilar para a psicologia ecológica, oferece uma versatilidade importante para explicações sobre nossa percepção do mundo, e principalmente para a percepção dos aspectos menos tangíveis da realidade, as chamadas “práticas sociomateriais”. Tal abordagem da cognição se mostra valiosa na superação desse paradoxo ao permitir (...) que a mesma seja compreendida como fenômeno coletivo, a linguagem e demais práticas que “seguem regras” estando inseridas nesse contexto como práticas construídas coletivamente que moldam a realidade humana. Während die klassischen erkenntnistheoretischen Positionen der Neuzeit, Rationalismus und Empirismus, sich als epistemisch-fundamentalistische Ansätze auf einen der beiden Aspekte fokussieren, kann es als Charakteristikum moderner Wissenschaftsphilosophie gelten, dass sie die Relation von Erfahrung und Logik zu bestimmen sucht. Die Relevanz dieses Verhältnisses wird zunächst anhand einiger Stationen und klassischer Probleme der Wissenschaftsphilosophie dargestellt (insbesondere der Theoriewahl). Der klassische Pragmatismus wird in diesen Debatten bisher kaum rezipiert. Gründe dafür liegen u. a. in der Rezeptionsgeschichte in Deutschland, die in Abschnitt 1.2 skizziert (...) wird, um schließlich zu zeigen, dass der Pragmatismus einen originären Ansatz in der Verhältnisbestimmung von Empirie und Theorie bietet und daher in der deutschen Wissenschaftsphilosophie Berücksichtigung finden sollte. In his latest book, Ethics for Capitalists, Joseph Heath draws on his many years of thinking about business ethics to propose, as the book’s subtitle indicates, “a systematic approach to business ethics, competition, and market failure.” He develops his argument carefully, draws on a wealth of interdisciplinary work, uses valuable and insightful examples, contrasts his views with important alternatives, and provides responses to compelling objections. In this review article, we argue that his book revises and sharpens many of Heath’s earlier (...) ideas, addressing important criticisms raised against them. We highlight that the book also offers a broad macro-level framework for market design, an explanation of how current corporate governance structures fit such a framework, and concrete responses to micro-level questions about what businesses and individuals ought to do. By doing all of this, his book shifts the scope of the “market failures approach” (MFA) from what used to be a narrow focus on the obligations of professional managers to an encompassing “ethics for capitalists” that ought to guide any economic actor within a capitalistic system. Despite the many merits of his book, we conclude by discussing some concerns we have about its scope and methodology. (shrink)

Nietzsche and Freud saw Christianity as metaphysical escapism, with Nietzsche calling the religion a "Platonism for the masses" and faulting Paul the apostle for negating more immanent, material modes of thought and political solidarity. Integrating this debate with the philosophies of difference espoused by Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ward Blanton argues that genealogical interventions into the political economies of Western cultural memory do not go far enough in relation to the imagined (...) founder of Christianity. Blanton challenges the idea of Paulinism as a pop Platonic worldview or form of social control. He unearths in Pauline legacies otherwise repressed resources for new materialist spiritualities and new forms of radical political solidarity, liberating "religion" from inherited interpretive assumptions so philosophical thought can manifest in risky, radical freedom.
