Today's constrained healthcare environment can make it very difficult for nurses to provide compassionate, competent, and ethical care, and yet their continued commitment to care is viewed as requisite. Nurses' commitment to care of patients, enmeshed with professional identity, may be understood as heroic. A few nursing scholars have advanced the concept of a nurse‐patient covenant to explain or inspire nurses' commitment to care. Covenant describes an enduring relationship characterised by mutual promises and generous responsiveness. However, recent critique has revealed (...) a general misunderstanding and misuse of the term covenant in much of the nursing literature whereby individual nurses are improperly and impossibly idealised as holding sole responsibility in the commitment to care. Such an interpretation obscures society's responsibilities in caring for both patients and nurses and contributes to the idealisation of nurses' commitment to extend themselves to fill in healthcare system gaps. Yet, the concept of a covenant relationship, when reframed as occurring between society and the profession of nursing, may lead us toward solutions to the very problems the originally misused concept sustained. Evidence within healthcare systems globally suggests that nurses' commitments are fragile or fragmented under duress due to increasing pressure, demands, and even risks. A reframing of covenant has the common good for society and nursing at its core and, we argue, may lead to a more sustainable nursing identity. We present the results of an exploratory project, undertaken to examine the utility and suitability of covenant as a relational framework for nursing. We explore a reframing of a covenant of care as a relationship between nursing and society, which may provide a fruitful path toward a sustainable, shared commitment for healthcare. In their classic analyses, Hobbes and Hume argue that offensively violating a covenant is irrational because the offense ruins one’s reputation. This paper explores conditions under which reputation alone can enforce covenants. The members of a community are modeled as interacting in a Covenant Game repeated over time. Folk theorems are presented that give conditions under which the Humean strategy of performing in covenants only with those who have never offensively violated or performed with an offensive violator characterizes (...) an equilibrium of the repeated Covenant Game. These folk theorems establish that for certain ideal settings Hobbes’ and Hume’s arguments against offensively violating covenants are compelling. However, these ideal settings presuppose that the community has certain mechanisms that generate common knowledge of the identities of those with whom one should perform. I analyze the results of computer simulations of the interactions in a community whose members must rely upon private communication alone. The computer simulation data show that in this community, reputation effects cannot effectively deter members from offensively violating covenants. I conclude that Hobbes’ and Hume’s warnings against offensive violation are compelling only on condition that the community is sufficiently structured to generate common knowledge among its members. I also conclude that even in such structured communities, the Humean strategy is not the uniquely “correct” policy. (shrink)

Robert Adams’s account of divine command theory argues that moral obligations are idealized versions of everyday social requirements. One type of social requirement is the ordinary demand one person makes of one another. Its idealized version is the perfect command a perfect God makes of those he loves. This paper extends Adams’s account of moral obligation by considering another kind of social requirement: promises. It argues that we can understand a divine covenant as an idealized version of a promise. Promisers (...) take on social requirements to promisees when they make promises. Analogously, God takes on obligations to humans when God makes covenants with them. Divine command theorists might fear that this makes God subject to moral rules not of his own choosing. In the Hebrew Bible, various instantiations of “covenant” are accompanied or established by various forms of sacrifice. Significantly, these sacrifices are tied directly or figuratively to the importance of generational succession in the reproduction of the bloodline. This indicates a symbolic nexus between covenant, sacrifice, and reproduction. Given this nexus, it is perhaps unsurprising that covenant is analogized to human relational bonds of marriage, the first and oldest instance of which is found in the book of Hosea. In this paper, (...) I trace certain thematic continuities between the association of covenant with sacrifice, the reproductive-familial significance of these sacrifices, and the ethical implications for the association later made between covenant and marriage. I argue that a covenant paradigm should not be applied to marriage for several reasons, notably the potentiality of violence inherent in the covenant-sacrifice-reproduction nexus and the radical asymmetry between God and humans which makes covenant definitive and all-encompassing. My analysis of how the covenant-sacrifice-reproduction nexus functions further nuances the enduring difficulty that Hosea acutely encapsulates for feminist readings of that text as well as covenant paradigms for marriage more broadly. The relevance of Sinai covenant (Exod 19-24, 32-34; Deut, Josh-2kings) in Hebrew and Christian religions cannot be overemphasized. It is a point of departure for understanding Israel’s basic religion and its components: God’s relationship with his people, the kingship of God, revelation and liberation from myth. It also illumines the riches of Israel’s history, its persons, liturgy, rituals, cults and commandments, the role of the prophets, fulfilled in Christ, the Messiah stressed by our honoree in the course of his ministries. (...) Many would see it as a conditional and relational covenant binding both God and his people. Its meaning, nature, and patterns as discussed historically, pastorally and contextually in this essay, went through various roots of nuances and shifts in the ancient Near East, Hebrew, Greek and Roman cultures, including commitment, faithfulness, resilience, and obedience, trust in divine providence and sharing together. This work highlights Christian scripture and ritual within a broader Middle Eastern and cross-cultural framework, drawing parallels with Judaic, Islamic, Egyptian, and other traditions in which sacred space and bodily form converge to engender a symbolic and theological embodiment of divine revelation and perception. By pointing out the shared physiological symbolism in religious architecture, ritual, and scripture, it shifts the perspective towards an externalized and directly experienced spiritual dimension and offers a novel glimpse into aspects of embodied theology and divine (...) perception. The demonstrated continuity of corporeal imagery, scriptural symbolism, and incorporation of the human form in ritual and architecture contributes to the areas of manuscript studies, comparative theology, and the history of religious thought in the Middle East. The focus on the body as a transhistorical and cross-cultural medium and site of divine manifestation presented in this study offers a model for multidisciplinary research on embodiment and cognition across the monotheistic religions and beyond. Using the methodological approach of symbolic and semantic analysis, the observed converging patterns are interpreted as examples of an embodied theology and hermeneutics that bridges metaphor and physiological processes. The work highlights the congruence between key scriptural terminology and symbolism, such as lamp, crystal, and niche, across cultures — illustrated by passages from the Qurʾanic Light Verse and Revelation — and suggests the possible theological implications of detailed neuro-anatomical knowledge. The results provide a new interdisciplinary framework for comparative theology that incorporates linguistic analysis, theological exegesis, neuroanatomy, and cognitive science. They underscore the centrality of corporeality as a neglected yet crucial theological category in the Abrahamic religions and emphasize the experiential dimension of revelation. (shrink)

Rahner’s theology of the cross, as articulated in the last two decades of his life, has several weaknesses: it neglects Jesus’ Jewishness, makes supersessionist presumptions, is typically more abstruse than dramatic, and is insufficiently connected to his theology of sin. At the same time, many of his core soteriological insights remain valuable. This article seeks to expand on those insights, especially by integrating post-conciliar covenantal theologies. This paper examines the effect of corporate social responsibility on the number of bond covenants. We find that a high CSR score has a negative association with the number of bond covenants. Moreover, our results are more pronounced for firms with a high bid-ask spread and high agency costs. Our analysis highlights the effect of the good stakeholder relationship on the bond contracts.

This chapter will argue for the adaptation of the consent process for vascularized composite allotransplantation research involving the transplant of faces and upper extremities. This adaptation of the consent process will reflect the particular nature of VCA as a form of therapeutic research which takes place over a long period of time, exposes the vulnerable subject to great risks and burdens, requires intensive long-term active participation of the recipient and raises the issue of the recipient’s dignity and vulnerability in a (...) special way. It will incorporate several of the insights offered by various critics of the current standard approach to consent. Finally, at the heart of this adaptation will be a reimagining of consent in covenantal terms. This will involve reimagining the researcher/subject and physician/patient relationship. In place of the more typical professional distance and emotional detachment on the part of researchers or physicians, covenant consent will require “compassionate solidarity.”. (shrink)

Contract is the dominant model for political philosophy's understanding of government grounded on the consent of the governed. However, there are at least five disabilities attached to classical social contract theory: the grounding contract never actually occurred; its provisions are vague and contestable; the stringency of the obligation thereby established is dubious; trans-generational consent is questionable; interpretive methods for giving effect to the contract are ill-specified. By contrast, the biblical story of the covenant Israel embraces at Sinai is shown to (...) be more adequately attentive to each of these five desiderata. The essay then focuses on the U.S. Constitution, arguing that in many ways it is more reflective of covenantal legitimating themes than those of social contract. The article uses typological understanding of the Lord's Supper to analyze Old Testament text. Intertextual hermeneutics, which connects the lexical units of various parts of texts for comprehensive understanding allowed to see an echo of the Eucharist in Old Testament. One of the most expressive prototypes or typos of the Lord's Supper in the Old Testament is the idea of the Covenants and changing of the covenants. The author analyzes the concept of testament and all cases of using (...) this term in Old Testament texts, and concludes that the word “berith” in the biblical text cannot be identified only with the concept of contract, agreement or union. Also, it cannot be identified only with the concept of law, command or statute. The Testament should be taken holistically, combining different meanings of this concept. In this way, the “berith” describes the idea of a specific agreement, which has the character of a bloody decree. Therefore, on the basis of biblical ideas, the concept of a covenant in a broad sense can be presented as a relationship between God and people, which can be described as a God-initiated contract of a personal-corporate nature, which provides for mutual obligations. This kind of relationship is characterized by a fixed immutability and is accompanied by signs, evidence and a special memory procedure. Therefore, in the Old Testament period, we can confidently talk only about the Covenant with Noah, Abraham and Moses, who were revealed and showed their inner, spiritual essence in the New Testament of Jesus Christ. Only in these cases did the signs of covenant relations in the narrow sense be revealed, namely: God's initiative, personal-corporate relations, the invariability and obligatory commemorativeness are caused. Other ancient covenants do not contain a complete religious component and are not eucharistic prototypes. An important sign of the typos of the Lord's Supper in the Old Testament is the blood of the covenant. All covenants were accompanied by the shedding of sacrificial blood, which indicated the sacrifice of Christ and its echo in the Eucharistic cup. This emphasizes the difference between “berith” as a covenant and “berith” as a commandment or statute. Bloodless covenant are not testaments in the full biblical sense of the word. The idea of a testament as a bloodline expresses the highest seriousness of mutual testamentary obligations. That is, a Testament is an inviolable contract, the non-fulfillment of which threatens death. An additional feature of the testament, as shown in the article, was the theophanic Presence. It manifested itself not only at the time of the covenant, but also in an invisible way throughout its validity. The establishment of a covenant relationship has always been associated with theophany and could not have been otherwise, because the covenant is always personal, so God considered it necessary to show a personal presence at this crucial time. The author proves that in all pre-Christian covenants there is a single prototype line that was revealed in Jesus Christ. By the faith and merit of the ancestor, his descendants enter into the covenant and enjoy the benefits and blessings of their predecessor, as well as inherit all his obligations to God. The people of the New Testament enjoy all the benefits and advantages not because of their own merits, but only because of the merits of Jesus. The sign of entering into the Covenant of Jesus is water baptism, which, as an external action, plays the role of a spiritual sign that indicates spiritual circumcision as a clipping of all sins. Thus, the intertextual analysis of the New Testament and Old Testament texts revealed the typos of Lord's Supper and shows the Christ as a single one, who determines the conditions of the covenants and makes it valid. A retired career Naval officer, I discuss problems of downsizing and retrenchment from a "military" perspective in terms of what I refer to as a "broken covenant.".

This article explores the link between Winstanley's analysis of the broken promises of the English Revolution and his attempt to mobilize the class- consciousness of the labouring poor. It suggests that his communalist reading of the promises made by Parliament to the people of England, and especially his interpretation of the Solemn League and Covenant, stretched the boundaries of language and logic to breaking point. It argues, however, that Winstanley's peculiar interpretation of the Covenant was significant because it enabled him (...) to incorporate a concrete empirical referent into his otherwise eschatological historical schema, and this he considered essential if the labouring poor were to be persuaded to take the risk of their lives and join the digging venture on George Hill. Many Christians treat marriage as a covenant. An influential group of contemporary Christians argues that covenant marriage provides a response to what they regard as the social ills of high divorce rates and the ‘breakdown’ of the traditional family. These Christians often look to John Calvin's marriage theology for inspiration because he linked treating marriage as a covenant to regarding marriage as sacred and indissoluble. In this article I cast doubt on the wisdom of treating marriage as a covenant. I (...) develop a critical genealogy that shows Calvin's marriage theology oppressed women by reinforcing their subordination to men and trapping women in abusive marriages. I then argue that recent social science suggests covenant marriage functions similarly among contemporary Christians. I consider whether a non-oppressive form of covenant marriage can be developed, before suggesting that we cannot yet know whether covenant marriage is salvageable. (shrink)

More than a quarter of the global population of two billion children live in Islamic countries; therefore, their protection is vital while a handful of them are suffering from lack of hygiene, education, and poverty. The current armed conflict in different ways also has an effect and seriously impacts children as victims and associates in armed groups. Organization of Islamic Conference as a collective voice of its 57 members, initiated a series of efforts in this regard. Islamic texts and traditions (...) show significant importance for child protection, but what has been done until today by OIC as a main intergovernmental Organization guided by Islamic principles, values and norms, is not sufficient. Covenant on the Rights of the Child in Islam is the first human rights binding document adopted by OIC as part of consecutive efforts of OIC to promote protection of children. Although it is regarded as an important step, its adequacy for protection of children affected by armed conflicts is under question. Furthermore, in comparison to International Humanitarian Law and Convention on the Rights of the Child, it does not reflect proportionately and further provisions for children affected, with regard to the extent and the dimensions of conflicts in Islamic countries. Levi’s work in decision theory has for many years been a major influence on the field. His writings have raised important new issues and opened new lines of inquiry. This collection of his papers brings out the range of his recent studies and the close bearing of his work on the work of others.

Paul Ramsey’s ethics have been notable for the way he draws on the covenantal theology of Karl Barth for his own ethics. Specifically, Ramsey makes use of the concept of covenant in his landmark work on medical ethics, The Patient as Person. Covenant and the accompanying grammars of “care” and “faithfulness” are suffused throughout the book, but the theological foundations are mostly implicit with only a few indirect allusions in the preface. This paper aims to uncover and make explicit Ramsey’s (...) covenantal casuistry in The Patient as Person, with particular focus on the moral debate surrounding euthanasia. It is argued that Ramsey’s normative claim that a Christian ethics grounded in covenantal theology “ought only to care for the dying” provides a persuasive moral paradigm for addressing the question of euthanasia in contradistinction to the current rights-based paradigms that encourage and justify the practice. Although Ramsey’s account faces considerable cultural headwinds, his covenant paradigm provides a coherent and theologically robust account of fundamental Christian norms and could better situate and explain Christian moral commitments in the practice of medicine and other questions of public moral concern. Theist interpreters of Hobbes, that is, those who think that Hobbes was a theist, and nontheist interpreters, that is, those who think he was not, agree that the most conspicuous difference between _Leviathan_ and his other two treatises on political theory is the extensive treatment of religion. While it may appear that they agree about little else, that is not true. They agree about an infinite number of things, to use ‘infinite’ as Hobbes does. They agree that Hobbes was born (...) in 1588 and attended Magdalen Hall, that he wrote _Leviathan_ and many other works, that he was a materialist and determinist, and that he engaged in disputes with John Bramhall and John Wallis, among others. This chapter presents a theist interpretation of Hobbes's treatment of divine covenants. Sections I and II discuss the nature of interpretation because the chances of agreement or disinterested evaluation of the competing views will be increased if the nature and standards of interpretation are made explicit. Sections III–V criticizes Edwin Curley's nontheist interpretation of Hobbes's doctrine of covenants. (shrink)

On one hand, such covenants help ensure the business interests of the buyer, on the other hand, by their nature, they can mean a restriction of competition, which is prohibited by law. In this essay I address three ways in which Edwards can inform Christian understanding of public life. First I show how Edwards provides both philosophical and theological rationales for social engagement and thereby resists the separation of religion from public life, and use his consideration of poverty as an illustration. Part II examines Edwards's dialectical treatment of patriotism, demonstrating both its importance to the Christian life and its susceptibility to deceptive accommodation to culture. Finally, in Part III I discuss Edwards's (...) use of "national covenant," which despite its temptation to chauvinism Edwards used to undermine national pride. In the conclusion I assess what we can use from Edwards for contemporary Christian understandings of public life. (shrink)

This article offers a critique of the recently revised BMA guidance on routine neonatal male circumcision and seeks to challenge the assumptions underpinning the guidance which construe this procedure as a matter of parental choice. Our aim is to problematise continued professional willingness to tolerate the non-therapeutic, non-consensual excision of healthy tissue, arguing that in this context both professional guidance and law are uncharacteristically tolerant of risks inflicted on young children, given the absence of clear medical benefits. By interrogating historical (...) medical explanations for this practice, which continue to surface in contemporary justifications of non-consensual male circumcision, we demonstrate how circumcision has long existed as a procedure in need of a justification. We conclude that it is ethically inappropriate to subject children—male or female—to the acknowledged risks of circumcision and contend that there is no compelling legal authority for the common view that male circumcision is lawful. The covenants established by the Prophet with the various Christian communities of his time have recently been documented by Dr. John Andrew Morrow in his book The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World. Morrow brought these covenants together from obscure monasteries, collections and out of print books, arguing against the accepted understanding that these are forgeries. The Prophet’s interaction with the Christians of Najrān is well documented in the Islamic sources, as well (...) as in The Chronicle of Seert, an ecclesiastical history of the Assyrian Church of the East. Yet, no close study of the similarities and differences of the Prophet’s encounter with them has been done, nor comparison of the Islamic sources with what has been related in the Covenant with the Christians of Najran and its Exordium. Doing so provides greater clarity not only in determining the authenticity and authority of the covenants but also in assessing the reliability of the Islamic historical source material. In this paper, a cross-comparison of all the covenants now available is undertaken using source-critical methods. Thereafter, it is argued that categorical dismissal of the covenants as forgeries is no longer tenable. We may then join Charles Upton who, in the Foreword to Morrow’s book, remarked that ‘we may in fact be witnessing—unexpectedly, miraculously, at this extremely late date—the emergence of a third foundational source for Islam’† after the Qurʾān and the ḥadīth. Carmen Pavel has recently provided an illuminating analysis of the limits of anarchic legal orders and, by extension, current arrangements for international law (Pavel 2021). Central to her argument is an account of the structural flaws in market anarchist institutions. The current paper argues that market anarchist theorists have robust responses to at least some of Pavel’s criticisms. From the anarchist viewpoint, statist approaches to legal enforcement have problems that are at least as “structural” as those Pavel attributes to anarchism. (...) The paper seeks to articulate this anarchist position and clarify the ways in which it complicates some of Pavel’s claims. It was Moses, our great Rabbi, who descended from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments, engraved on the tablets of the Covenant, to teach the people of Israel morality and elevate their souls. This event marked a foundational moment in the spiritual and ethical development of humanity, providing a framework for living that sought to (...) raise humans above their baser instincts. Remarkably, the event of receiving the commandments occurred twice. After Moses shattered the first set of tablets in response to the people’s idolatry, he ascended the mountain again to receive a new set. This pivotal moment teaches us that ethics and morality evolve. What was true and necessary at one moment may require transformation and renewal at another. The shattered tablets were not discarded but placed in the Holy Ark alongside the new ones, symbolizing that both past and present are integral to our journey. (shrink)
