Competence-based assessment and training for ethical situations in practice: a pilot study.Benjamin M. Ogles, Kristin Lang Hansen & David M. Erekson - 2024 - Ethics and Behavior 34 (7):473-490.
In this pilot study, deliberate practice and competence-based assessment were incorporated into a first-year graduate course on professional issues and ethics. Students responded to challenging simulations of basic ethical situations in therapy before and after the course. Aspects of deliberate practice were incorporated into the course. Student self-report ratings and independent performance ratings blind to timing found improvements in students’ ability to manage basic ethical situations in practice. Pilot evidence suggests competence-based assessment and training have potential use for (...)

  2. Contextualizing Individual Competencies for Managing the Corporate Social Responsibility Adaptation Process: The Apparent Influence of the Business Case Logic.Martin Mulder, Vincent Blok, Renate Wesselink & Eghe R. Osagie - 2019 - Business and Society 58 (2):369-403.
Companies committed to corporate social responsibility should ensure that their managers possess the appropriate competencies to effectively manage the CSR adaptation process. The literature provides insights into the individual competencies these managers need but fails to prioritize them and adequately contextualize them in a manner that makes them meaningful in practice. In this study, we contextualized the competencies within the different job roles CSR managers have in the CSR adaptation process. We interviewed 28 CSR managers, followed by a survey to (...)

The curricula of the undergraduate study programs on Zakat and Waqf management in Indonesia are still in their early stages of development. In this research, we aim to evaluate these curricula using a competency-based approach towards several study programs. Specifically, we compare the needs of Zakat and Waqf management with the curricula of undergraduate study programs in Indonesian universities. To fulfil our objective, we conduct several interviews with the program heads and practitioners. We also propose a (...)

  5. Physicians' Strikes and the Competing Bases of Physicians' Moral Obligations.D. Robert MacDougall - 2013 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 23 (3):249-274.
During the last several decades, professional medicine has undergone profound changes in its organization. In particular, the growth of managed care organizations and publicly funded medicine has increasingly standardized physician working conditions and reimbursement. While it is sometimes disputed whether the profession of medicine is suffering reduced autonomy as a whole, there is little doubt that individual physicians are losing autonomy (Burdi and Baker 1999; Harrison and Schulz 1989; Iglehart 1992). As a result, physicians are increasingly attracted to various mechanisms (...)

Moderation as a Moral Competence: Integrating Perspectives for a Better Understanding of Temperance in the Workplace.Pablo Sanz & Joan Fontrodona - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 155 (4):981-994.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the virtue of temperance as a moral competence in professional performance. The analysis relies on three different streams of literature: virtue ethics, positive psychology and competency-based management. The paper analyzes how temperance is defined in each of these perspectives. The paper proposes an integrative definition of temperance as “moral competence” and summarizes behaviors in business environments in which temperance plays a role.

Competencies for sustainability: Insights from the encyclical letter Laudato Si.Cristina Díaz de la Cruz & Rubén Eduardo Polo Valdivieso - 2024 - Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 33 (4):606-616.
This study offers a proposal about which competencies should be fostered in organizations to promote a culture in favor of sustainability in line with Pope Francis' encyclical letter Laudato Si. As a result, seven main competencies are proposed, with their interpretation in the light of the encyclical letter, and some suggestions on how to implement them in organizations are presented. The competencies are systemic vision, critical thinking, capacity for dialog, inclusion, proper use of goods, creativity, and spirituality. In addition, the (...)

Between Scylla and Charybdis: reconciling competing data management demands in the life sciences.Louise M. Bezuidenhout & Michael Morrison - 2016 - BMC Medical Ethics 17 (1):29.
BackgroundThe widespread sharing of biological and biomedical data is recognised as a key element in facilitating translation of scientific discoveries into novel clinical applications and services. At the same time, twenty-first century states are increasingly concerned that this data could also be used for purposes of bioterrorism. There is thus a tension between the desire to promote the sharing of data, as encapsulated by the Open Data movement, and the desire to prevent this data from ‘falling into the wrong hands’ (...)

Background A combination of theoretical and practical approaches is required to learn and acquire ethical competencies in caring. Occasionally, reflection on practical action differs from theoretical learning. In the context of reflective learning, issues such as ethical values can be discussed since they evoke conflict among nursing students. (1 other version)Integrating character in management: virtues, character strengths, and competencies.Carmen Cabello-Medina & Rafael Morales-Sánchez - 2015 - Business Ethics 24 (2):S156-S174.
In recent years, character traits in general and virtue‐related concepts in particular have been of considerable interest to philosophers, psychological researchers, and practitioners in the business ethics field. Three approaches to character traits can be used to incorporate ethics into organizations: virtues (philosophical approach), character strengths (psychological approach), and competencies (management approach). The aim of this article is to clarify the concept of character traits, or virtues, and provide a unified operational version of it for incorporation into management. (...)

Based on a condensed historical overview of management as an artifact, the article argues that management is still suffused by an implicit paradigm of value extraction that is ideologically and culturally tinted and that we need to find a new foothold in theory and practice, a more universally valid approach with an encompassing awareness of societal well-being and long-term impact. The radically new approach proposed is based on free energy minimization, a concept from computational neuroscience, as (...)

Nurses make an important contribution to the organisation and coordination of patient care but receive little formal educational preparation for this work. This paper builds on Allen's care trajectory management framework to specify evidence‐based and theoretically informed competencies for this component of the nursing role and proposes how these might be incorporated into nursing curricula. This is necessary so that at the point of registration nurses have the expertise to realise their potential as both providersandorganisers of patient care (...)

This paper presents the concept of character competence as a basis for creating ethical organizations. In view of the gaps between the 'statement' of values and the 'state' of values that have been witnessed recently in many corporates, the need to improve character competence of the corporates has become critical to the success of organizations. While corporates pay a lot of attention to core competence, they hardly pay much to character competence. Drawing upon various paradigms of ethics, this paper suggests (...)

Within the field of education management studies, recent reforms promoting devolution and choice are often seen to provide exciting new opportunities. It is claimed that the 'new' education management, with its emphasis on site-based decision-making and consumer accountability, will enable headteachers and principals to 'take control' of their schools and make them more productive environments in which to work and study. However, our review of research findings from five different countries that are putting in place devolution and (...)

Because corporate social responsibility can be beneficial to both companies and its stakeholders, interest in factors that support CSR performance has grown in recent years. A thorough integration of CSR in core business processes is particularly important for achieving effective long-term CSR practices. Here, we explored the individual CSR-related competencies that support CSR implementation in a corporate context. First, a systematic literature review was performed in which relevant scientific articles were identified and analyzed. Next, 28 CSR directors and managers were (...)

In this paper, we use the competency labor framework to examine how individuals with disabilities ‘fit in’ their mainstream education and early work contexts. Competency labor is an impression management tactic that regulates one’s perception of competency using cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects to project competence within societal norms and display rules. We draw on longitudinal interview data collected over 3 years (late 2019 to early 2023) on the lived experiences of eight individuals with disabilities, from (...)

Managers often ask why their firm should have an ethics program, especially if no one has complained about unethical behavior. The pursuit of business ethics can cost money, they say. It can lose sales to less scrupulous competitors and can drain management time and energy. But as Harvard business professor Francis Aguilar points out, ethics scandals (such as over Beech-Nut's erzatz "apple juice" or Sears's padded car repair bills) can severely damage a firm, with punishing legal penalties, bad publicity, (...)

Teachers’ social-emotional competence is considered important to master the social and emotional challenges inherent in their profession and to build positive teacher-student relationships. In turn, this is key to both teachers’ occupational well-being and positive student development. Nonetheless, an instrument assessing the profession-specific knowledge and skills that teachers need to master the social and emotional demands in the classroom is still lacking. India’s sacred texts provide deep insights into people management, with the Triguna theory offering a culturally rooted framework to understand workplace personality and behaviour. In Indian higher education, non-teaching duties are as vital as teaching for faculty development; yet, aligning these roles with faculty’s natural strengths is often overlooked, leading to dissatisfaction and anxiety. Despite their importance, this issue remains under-researched. This study develops a competency mapping matrix based on the Triguna theory to align non-teaching roles with (...)

The need for including sustainability in higher education curricula and defining the role of higher education institutions in teaching for sustainability has been much discussed in literature. Frontline Managers: A Re-examination of Their Role in Talent Management.Søren Voxted - 2019 - In Billy Adamsen & Stephen Swailes, Managing Talent: Understanding Critical Perspectives. Cham: Springer Verlag. pp. 123-148.
Using qualitative data obtained from 18 frontline managers working in the Danish public sector, this chapter shows that frontline managers display a leadership role that differs from that of other managers including aspects of recruitment, competence development, and career planning. Three distinct themes that distinguish frontline managers emerged from the data. (1) Their nearness to and involvement in the professionalism of the unit. (2) Operating at the interface between two knowledge regimes relating to the core task and to higher (...). (3) Their role in creating a new professionalism which occurs when frontline managers interact with and across several professions. Based on these findings, the chapter argues that frontline managers should constitute an independent focus point for Talent Management. (shrink)

The article explores the phenomenon of visual and aesthetic thinking as an emerging managerial competence and an integral component of management culture in the hospitality industry. Moving beyond traditional rational approaches, the study conceptualizes visual-aesthetic thinking as a form of managerial intelligence that integrates cognitive, sensory, and cultural dimensions of decision-making. It emphasizes that visual perception, color, composition, and spatial design function as non-verbal management tools capable of structuring team behavior, stimulating creativity, and reinforcing brand identity. Based (...)

New Public Management and the Police Profession at Play.Christin Thea Wathne - 2020 - Criminal Justice Ethics 39 (1):1-22.
This article explores the ways in which competing institutional logics influence the knowledge base of the police, ideas about good police practice and organizational identities. A tension between the humanistic professional police logic and the instrumental New Public Management (NPM) logic is discussed in the context of policing. While the humanistic professional police logic gradually emerged in the 1960s and 70s, over the past twenty years the police force has been reformed in line with the NPM logic. Through qualitative (...)

This paper addresses the role of social emotional competence in the emotional and behavioral problems and learning outcomes of preschool children based on their parents’ and teachers’ evaluations. In this study, we compared the perceptions of teachers and parents when evaluating the same child using the multi-informant assessment. First, the associations and differences between both the informant evaluations were investigated. Second, the correlation of the social emotional competence and emotional, and behavioral difficulties among preschool children was analyzed, separately addressing (...)

(1 other version)Professional Talk: How Middle Managers Frame Care Workers as Professionals.Lieke Oldenhof, Annemiek Stoopendaal & Kim Putters - 2013 - Health Care Analysis 24 (1):47-70.
This paper examines how middle managers in the long term care sector use the discourse of professionalism to create ‘appropriate’ work conduct of care workers. Using Watson’s concept of professional talk, we study how managers in their daily work talk about professionalism of vocationally skilled care workers. Based on observations and recordings of mundane conversations by middle managers, we found four different professional talks that co-exist: (1) appropriate looks and conduct, (2) reflectivity about personal values and ‘good’ care, (3) (...)

Corporate Governance and Strategic Management in the Digital Era: A Conceptual Framework of Board Digital Capability.Zhaoyu Zheng, Yi Zhang, Xiaoming Li & Wei Yet Tan - 2026 - International Theory and Practice in Humanities and Social Sciences 3 (2):1-8.
Digital transformation has reshaped corporate strategy, increasing technological complexity and strategic uncertainty. Traditional corporate governance research, which emphasizes monitoring and control, provides limited explanation of how boards influence strategic adaptation in digitally intensive environments. This study develops a conceptual framework linking corporate governance and strategic management through board digital capability. Integrating agency theory, resource dependence theory, and upper echelons theory, the framework identifies three mechanisms—monitoring enhancement, resource provision, and cognitive framing—through which board digital capability shapes strategic adaptability and digital (...)

Clearing Opacity: Change Management via Leader Transparency in Native American Neotraditional Organizations.Andrew K. Schnackenberg, Maurice Harris, Jon Panamaroff, Colleen Reilly, Lekshmy Sankar & Sean Scally - 2024 - Business and Society 63 (3):502-541.
Neotraditional organizations are those that exist to sustain indigenous cultures, practices, and institutions as they compete in modern markets. This study examines how a single mechanism, leader transparency, influences change outcomes in neotraditional organizations. We predict that leader transparency will enhance employee cognition- and affect-based trust toward leadership during times of change, thereby supporting relational dynamics within the organization that enable a smooth transition. We also predict that leader transparency will elevate employee acceptance of new technology during change, thereby (...)

Dialogical Environmental Worldview Integration Model (DEWIM): Reconciling Human–Human Conflict Between Anthropocentrism and Ecocentrism in Environmental Management.Azlan Abas - 2026 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 39 (1):12.
Environmental management continues to be shaped by a longstanding epistemological divide between anthropocentric and ecocentric worldviews, a divide that manifests not only in human–nature relations but, more critically, in human–human ideological conflict. While existing theories in environmental ethics, political ecology, and social–ecological systems attempt to reconcile these perspectives, they largely foreground the human–environment binary and pay insufficient attention to conflicts arising from competing value systems among stakeholders themselves. This article introduces the Dialogical Environmental Worldview Integration Model (DEWIM), a conceptual (...)

It is imperative to understand the factors that influence clinical competency. Consequently, it is essential to study those that have an impact on the process of attaining clinical competency. A grounded theory approach was adopted for this study. Professional competency empowers nurses and enables them to fulfill their duties effectively. Internal and external factors were identified as affecting clinical competency. A total of 36 clinical nurses, nurse educators, hospital managers and members of the Nursing Council in (...)

The Development of Pedagogical Competence in Tacit Knowing.Clemens Wieser - 2022 - Tradition and Discovery 48 (2):22-35.
Polanyi’s theory of personal knowledge provides a paradigmatic conceptual framework for the empirical analysis of tacit knowing and learning. We use this framework to analyze the development of pedagogical competence. Drawing on Polanyi, we regard pedagogical competence as a particular field of professional tacit knowing that relates subsidiary and focal awareness of events in class, effects situated appraisal, and relates events to teaching intentions. The development of pedagogical competence takes place when a teacher struggles to relate teaching intentions to ongoing (...)

In an educational context increasingly affected by psychosocial challenges, emotional competencies are recognized as essential for student well-being, social interaction, and holistic development. These include abilities such as recognizing, expressing, and regulating emotions and empathy, which are key elements for building healthy relationships and managing conflict. Despite their importance, low emotional competencies have been reported in secondary students. This scoping review examines the impact of emotional education programs on secondary students. The PRISMA Scoping method was used with the Web Of (...)
