Zvídavost je klíčová pro kognitivní rozvoj dětí a kladení otázek je zásadní součástí tohoto procesu. Tento článek představuje metodologii nově adaptovaného (speciálně napromptovaného) nástroje, který je poháněn umělou inteligencí (AI) a navržen tak, aby měřil a potenciálně podporoval zvídavost žáků prostřednictvím zlepšení jejich dovedností kladení otázek. Tento nástroj využívá zpracování přirozeného jazyka (NLP) k analýze a kategorizaci otázek, jako jsou otázky týkající se školy nebo zvídavosti, a poskytuje okamžitou, přizpůsobenou zpětnou vazbu, která podporuje hlubší zkoumání. Tento nástroj nejen pomáhá učitelům (...) tím, že poskytuje přehled o zapojení žáků, ale také slouží jako výzkumný nástroj, který shromažďuje dlouhodobá data o zvídavosti. Článek se zabývá etickými otázkami, jako je ochrana dat a předcházení zaujatosti v AI, aby byla zajištěna odpovědná využití. Zaměřením na metodologické aspekty nástroje tento článek přispívá k rozvoji aplikací AI ve vzdělávání a nabízí rámec pro podporu prostředí zaměřeného na zvídavost. (shrink)

Classical statistical mechanics posits probabilities for various events to occur, and these probabilities seem to be objective chances. This does not seem to sit well with the fact that the theory’s time evolution is deterministic. We argue that the tension between the two is only apparent. We present a theory of Humean objective chance and show that chances thus understood are compatible with underlying determinism and provide an interpretation of the probabilities we find in Boltzmannian statistical mechanics.

Deliberation issues in decision, and so might be taken as a paradigmatic volitional activity. Character, on the other hand, may appear pre-volitional: the dispositions that constitute it provide the background against which decisions are made. Bernard Williams offers an intriguing picture of how the two may be connected via the concept of practical necessities, which are at once constitutive of character and deliverances of deliberation. Necessities are thus the glue binding character and the will, allowing us to take responsibility for (...) our characters. Intriguing though the picture may be, it did not receive a thorough elaboration in Williams’s work. My aim here is to work out and defend what I take to be the most valuable aspect of Williams’s view of agency: its model of the way character and the will can jointly determine agency through mutual constitution. However, I argue that Williams’s attempt to use this model to ground his attack on Kantian morality does not succeed, because the primacy Williams accords to character over the will cannot yield the appropriate kind of normative authority, even from the perspective of the agent. I urge that we retain Williams’s model of the interaction between character and the will, modified to allow the will an authority that is not derived from the necessity of character. (shrink)

A central question of environmental ethics remains one of how best to account for the intuitions generated by the Last Man scenarios; that is, it is a question of how to explain our experience of value in nature and, more importantly, whether that experience is justified. Seeking an alternative to extrinsic views, according to which nonhuman entities possess normative features that obligate us, I turn to constitutive views, which make value or whatever other limits nonhuman nature places on action dependent (...) on features intrinsic to human beings and constitutive of them or their obligations. After examining two kinds of constitutive views—environmental virtue ethics and Korsgaard’s Kantianism—I suggest an alternative that takes up the strengths of both while avoiding their shortcomings. On this view, we have an indirect obligation to experience nature as obligating us, although we have direct obligations only to human beings. (shrink)

The potential to achieve dynamic, scalable and cost-effective marketplaces and eCommerce solutions has driven recent research efforts towards so-called Semantic Web Services that are enriching Web services with machine-processable semantics. To this end, the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) provides the conceptual underpinning and a formal language for semantically describing all relevant aspects of Web services in order to facilitate the automatization of discovering, combining and invoking electronic services over the Web. In this paper we describe the overall structure of (...) WSMO by its four main elements: ontologies, which provide the terminology used by other WSMO elements, Web services, which provide access to services that, in turn, provide some value in some domain, goals that represent user desires, and mediators, which deal with interoperability problems between different WSMO elements. Along with introducing the main elements of WSMO, we provide a logical language for defining formal statements in WSMO together with some motivating examples from practical use cases which shall demonstrate the benefits of Semantic Web Services. Angesichts aktueller Krisenzustände sucht man nach einer globalen Ethik. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird Albert Schweitzers Weltanschauung der Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben als möglicher Beitrag zur Entwicklung einer solchen Ethik untersucht. Mit seinem Entwurf wollte Schweitzer am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts die zerrüttete abendländische Kultur erneuern. Der Mensch müsse sich als „Leben inmitten von Leben“ erfahren. Da die biologische Natur für die Ethik keine Quelle sein kann, ist sie verwiesen auf den Willen zur Liebe, den der Mensch in sich selbst entdeckt (...) und der ihn nötigt, aus einer Haltung der Ehrfurcht alles Leben zu erhalten und zu fördern. Mit der tätigen Mystik der Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben wollte Schweitzer eine universale Grundlegung jeglicher Ethik entwickeln, was ihm aber nur unzureichend gelungen ist. Auch wenn seine Weltanschauung kaum – wie er sie darzulegen versucht – als „denknotwendig“ gelten kann, ist sie nach Auffassung des Autors aber dennoch für den heutigen Krisenzustand als Inspiration und Motivation hochaktuell.Regarding the current crisis conditions, we are looking for a global ethics. This paper investigates Albert Schweitzer’s reverence for life worldview as a possible contribution to the development of such ethics. With his project at the beginning of the 20th century, Schweitzer wanted to renew the devastated Western culture. Man must experience himself as “a life in the midst of life”. As biological nature cannot be the source for ethics, it is referred to the will to love which man discovers in himself and which, due to the attitude of reverence, obliges him for sustaining and promoting all life. With the active mysticism of reverence for life Schweitzer intended to develop a universal foundation of all ethics, but the intention was inadequate. In the author’s opinion, although his worldview can hardly be considered “logically necessary” – as he tries to demonstrate – it is still highly relevant as an inspiration and motivation in the contemporary crisis condition. The article presents an obituary for Polish philosopher Piotr Lenartowicz.

The article is concerned with D. Davidson\'s semantic views. The aim of the article is to explain some misunderstandings that have arisen in the course of reception of these views. The author tries to prove that according to Davidson semantic properties and relations do not come under classical definitions, but under contextual ones, like in L. Wittgenstein\'s semantics. Hence the interpretation presented by J. Kmita is incorrect, whereas that by R. Rorty is right. Causal explanation of semantics is out of (...) the question; hence Rorty\'s interpretation is false with respect to this point. Propositions talk about what they talk about, so Kmita is wrong. According to Davidson the concept of reference is permissible, so Putnam is wrong in his interpretation. Moreover, there is only one logic semantics and for all languages it is the same, hence Kmita is wrong when he says that Davidson\'s interpreter arbitrarily pushes foreign semantics into his own. He is also wrong when he puts in Davidson\'s mouth the conviction that non-determination of a translation does not consist in impossibility to cognize foreign semantics. (shrink)

The paper is a review of the book by Krzysztof Wójtowicz, O pojęciu dowodu w matematyce [ On the Concept of Proof in Mathematics ]. It presents the main theses of the book and evaluates them.

The aim of the paper is to study the role and features of proofs in mathematics. Formal and informal proofs are distinguished. It is stressed that the main roles played by proofs in mathematical research are verification and explanation. The problem of the methods acceptable in informal proofs, in particular of the usage of computers, is considered with regard to the proof of the Four-Color Theorem. The features of in-formal and formal proofs are compared and contrasted. It is stressed that (...) the concept of an informal proof is not precisely defined, it is simply practised and any attempts to define it fail. It is — so to speak — a practical notion, psychological, sociological and cultural in character. The second one is precisely defined in terms of logical con-cepts. Hence it is a logical concept which is rather theoretical than practical in char-acter. The first one is — in part at least — semantical in nature, the second is entirely syntactical. A proof-theoretical thesis, similar to the Turing-Church Thesis in the re-cursion theory, is formulated. It says that both concepts of a proof in mathematics are equivalent. W pracy rozważa się problem pojęcia prawdy w matematyce. Punktem wyjścia jest definicja prawdziwości Tarskiego. Dyskutuje się tło filozoficzne tej definicji, jej znaczenie dla języka matematyki i dla filozofii, stosunek do różnych definicji prawdy. Rozważa się też związek dowodliwości i prawdziwości w matematyce. Korzystając z wyników logiki matematycznej wykazuje się, że warunki z definicji Tarskiego nie zapewniają jedyności interpretacji predykatu prawdy. Pokazuje się też, że pojęcia semantyczne, takie jak spełnianie i prawdziwość nie są pojęciami finitystycznymi i wymagają użycia pojęcia nieskończoności.
