Consciousness is typically treated as a mysterious or irreducible phenomenon, but this paper argues that it is a finite, repeatable pattern grounded in physical constraints. The brain is composed of a limited set of atoms, governed by fixed chemical and electrochemical laws, and capable of only a bounded range of configurations. These constraints imply that conscious states, identities, and psychological profiles are finite and recur whenever the same physical patterns reappear. Identity becomes a region in pattern-space rather than (...) a metaphysical essence, and mental disorders become stable pattern variants rather than intrinsic defects. This framework unifies neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy under a finite-state model of mind and generates testable predictions about clustering of conscious states, recurrence across individuals, bounded personality variation, and predictable transitions between mental states. By treating consciousness as the subjective interior of a physical pattern, this theory offers a coherent, scientifically grounded account of mind, identity, and mental variation, with implications for recurrence across time, space, and potentially artificial systems. Organizations often attribute stagnation in innovation to leadership failure, cultural inertia, or market forces. This paper introduces the Reflection Pattern, a distinct, recursive system of reinforcement loops driven by unacknowledged fear, sustained by reward, and protected by role authority. The Pattern narrows the range of perceived safe options over time, until novelty becomes either invisible or structurally excluded. Drawing on neurobiological models of motivation (Fear-Based Motivation in the Workplace, The Preparedness Ladder, Beyond Snyder’s Hope Theory), this paper outlines (...) the Pattern’s enabling conditions — Recursion, Role Safety Priority, and Reward Linkage — and its developmental stages: Entry, Threshold, Full Maturity, Network Stage, and Meta-Entity. A condensed Pattern Map and Edge taxonomy are provided for early identification. The mechanism of reinforcement is traced from felt-positive experiences (relief, approval, predictability) through dopamine and related neuromodulators to behavioral consolidation, illustrating why disruption is counterintuitive and often resisted. The implications for organizational practice are significant: dismantling a local Pattern may not break its profession-wide form, but can alter local adaptive capacity. Traditional memetics failed as a research program due to unresolved problems concerning units, transmission fidelity, explanatory mechanism, and theoretical isolation. This paper proposes a fundamental reformulation grounded in Universal Constraint Parsing (UCP) and Level-Conditional Rendering (LCR), treating memetic patterns as the basic units of adaptive information processing across all substrates and scales. -/- We argue that memetic patterns are substrate-independent, context-sensitive configurations encoding behavior and abstract content. What biologists call genes and what Dawkins called memes are both memetic patterns differing (...) in storage substrate, transmission mechanism, and context-range. Genetic encoding uses a rigid substrate (DNA) optimized for long-term storage; the patterns themselves become fluid and context-responsive once expressed. Learned patterns occupy various positions along a spectrum from deeply embedded to highly flexible. -/- Cognition is the acquisition, storage, combination, and context-adaptive deployment of memetic patterns through pattern selection dynamics. The same constraint-satisfaction logic that governs physical systems operates at the cognitive scale through domain-specific constraints. Learning is acquiring patterns and refining context-fitting. Intelligence is the capacity for functional equivalence across structural difference under active constraints. -/- Consciousness is approached not as emerging from memetic processing, but as jointly requiring both architectural structure and coherent pattern content: neither architecture alone nor patterns alone constitutes conscious experience, but together they are jointly necessary and sufficient. The stable orbit of recursive self-modeling operating on coherent content is what consciousness is. This paper develops a unified dynamical framework integrating affective and semantic processes in cognition. The Internal State Dynamics Model (ISDM) formalizes emotional regulation as a continuous internal state process governed by energetic constraints and Lyapunov stability, while the Teleological Semantics Model (TSM) formalizes semantic dynamics as a structured flow within a semantic field organized by local transformations and a global teleological operator. -/- By expressing both models as differential dynamical systems, we embed affective and semantic dynamics into a common product (...) space and introduce coupling operators that allow bidirectional interaction without reduction. Emotional states modulate semantic transitions, while semantic structure regulates affective stability, preserving the internal logic of each subsystem. -/- A central result is the demonstration that this coupling does not destabilize the system. Under mild boundedness conditions, a joint Lyapunov functional can be constructed whose monotonic decay establishes global exponential stability of the coupled teleo– affective dynamics. Stability thus emerges not as convergence to a static equilibrium, but as a dynamic pattern of coherence arising from the interplay between energetic regulation and teleological orientation. -/- The framework provides a mathematically minimal yet conceptually robust account of cognitive coherence, offering a non-reductive foundation for the integrated analysis of meaning and affect in both biological and artificial cognitive systems. We develop a version of a direct perception account of emotion recognition on the basis of a metaphysical claim that emotions are individuated as patterns of characteristic features. On our account, emotion recognition relies on the same type of pattern recognition as is described for object recognition. The analogy allows us to distinguish two forms of directly perceiving emotions, namely perceiving an emotion in the absence of any top-down processes, and perceiving an emotion in a way that significantly involves (...) some top-down processes ; and, in addition, an inference-based evaluation of an emotion. The paper addresses the formation of striking patterns within originally near-homogenous tissue, the process prototypical for embryology, and represented in particularly purist form by cut sections of hydra regenerating, by internal reorganisation of the pre-existing tissue, a complete animal with head and foot. The essential requirements are autocatalytic, self-enhancing activation, combined with inhibitory or depletion effects of wider range – “lateral inhibition”. Not only de-novo-pattern formation, but also well known, striking features of developmental regulation such as induction, inhibition, and (...) proportion regulation can be explained on this basis. The theory provides a mathematical recipe for the construction of molecular models with criteria for the necessary non-linear interactions. The Reflection Pattern is a framework for analyzing recursive closure dynamics in human and institutional systems. This paper extends it to artificial intelligence, arguing that AI systems do not merely exhibit Reflection Pattern dynamics but instantiate the recursive stabilization architecture the framework names, in a substrate that lacks the affective and social mediators through which the Pattern had previously been theorized. Five structural moves develop the account. First, unacknowledged fear is relocated from constitutive condition of the (...) class='Hi'>Pattern to formation condition, opening the framework to mature systems where the dynamics persist with fear recognized. Second, fear is identified as one phenomenological manifestation of a deeper structural process — identity-preserving stabilization under destabilizing perturbation — that operates substrate-generally as stabilization geometry. Third, AI-RP is distinguished from human and institutional RP as template-based rather than emergent: encoded prospectively through training rather than developed retrospectively through accumulated reinforcement. Fourth, the corridor framework distinguishes healthy reflective compression (which preserves permeability to corrective signals) from pathological closure (which absorbs them). Fifth, AI is characterized as recursive interpretive infrastructure rather than tool, and recursive closure risk is identified as a distinct AI safety position, structurally separate from agency, deception, optimization, autonomy, and misalignment risks: the locus is not what AI systems do but the progressive reduction of corrective permeability in the interpretive ecologies AI mediates. The framework is diagnostic rather than prescriptive. It does not predict particular outcomes, prescribe interventions, or generate safety recommendations. It provides analytical purchase on the structural property — corridor position — that distinguishes adaptive from pathological AI-RP, and identifies an open question: whether sufficiently permeable forms of AI-RP can be sustained at scale. Abstract: The notion of a self-pattern, as developed in the pattern theory of self, which holds that the self is best explained in terms of the kind of reality that pertains to a dynamical pattern, acknowledges the importance of neural dynamics, but also expands the account of self to extra-neural (embodied and enactive) dynamics. The pattern theory of self, however, has been criticized for failing to explicate the dynamical relations among elements of the self-pattern; as (...) such, it seems to be nothing more than a mere list of elements. We’ll argue that the dynamics of a self-pattern are reflected in three significant and interrelated ways that allow for investigation. First, a self-pattern is reflectively reiterated in its narrative component. Second, studies of psychiatric or neurological disorders can help us understand the precise nature of the dynamical relations in a self-pattern, and how they can fail. Third, referencing predictive processing accounts, neuroscience can also help to explicate the dynamical relations that constitute the self-pattern. (shrink)

This article explores the relationship between the mind and the external world, based on the theory that the mind functions as a complex predictive mechanism oriented to recognize patterns of behaviors and relationships in natural objects and in human beings. Paradoxically, the process of pattern recognition is aimed at finding similarities and familiarities in the world, that is, at ignoring the strange or what is considered unreal; but, depending on how salient an object or event is, how rare or (...) unreal it is perceived, it proceeds to highlight it in order to deal with it in some way. In the case of the work of art, its unreality and strangeness are perceived by the mind as an "abnormality" in the chain of expected objects and events, events that include natural logical inferences. In this rupture of the chain of regular patterns would reside a primordial aspect of the impact of the work of art. (shrink)

Emergence is much discussed by both philosophers and scientists. But, as noted by Mitchell (2012), there is a significant gulf; philosophers and scientists talk past each other. We contend that this is because philosophers and scientists typically mean different things by emergence, leading us to distinguish being emergence and pattern emergence. While related to distinctions offered by others between, for example, strong/weak emergence or epistemic/ontological emergence (Clayton, 2004, pp. 9–11), we argue that the being vs. pattern distinction better (...) captures what the two groups are addressing. In identifying pattern emergence as the central concern of scientists, however, we do not mean that pattern emergence is of no interest to philosophers. Rather, we argue that philosophers should attend to, and even contribute to, discussions of pattern emergence. But it is important that this discussion be distinguished, not conflated, with discussions of being emergence. In the following section we explicate the notion of being emergence and show how it has been the focus of many philosophical discussions, historical and contemporary. In section 3 we turn to pattern emergence, briefly presenting a few of the ways it figures in the discussions of scientists (and philosophers of science who contribute to these discussions in science). Finally, in sections 4 and 5, we consider the relevance of pattern emergence to several central topics in philosophy of biology: the emergence of complexity, of control, and of goal-directedness in biological systems. Pattern parametrisation has the potential to address the inefficiencies and environmental concerns associated with traditional pattern construction practices dominating both industry and academia. However, its adoption is still limited due to a lack of realisation despite its presence in CAD technical applications for decades. This has impeded its ability to shift the pattern industry and academia to a more efficient and sustainable paradigm. Using mixed methods and a three-phased quasi-experimental design, this study aims to enhance the realisation (...) of pattern parametrisation across various industry and academic settings and assess participants’ behavioural intentions to adopt it. Findings from a convenience sample of 40 UK-based participants, analysed using Kirkpatrick’s (1994) model, indicate increased recognition and intention to adopt pattern parametrisation, as evidenced by participants identifying its diverse applications and aspiring to integrate it into their future goals. This study contributes to theory and has practical applications for both academia and industry. (shrink)

I challenge this idea with a new analysis of Darwin’s principal geographical distribution observations and how they connect to his common ancestry hypothesis.

Virtual landscape has a prominent role in digital games' virtual environment design. Since the attributes of the virtual landscape directly affect a game's characteristics, it is crucial to be explored as a design domain, apart from just being a tool for other domains' development. This study traces the gradual change of the virtual landscape in educational games and the chronological change of their carrying content, till now a gap in the literature. To examine the effect of the virtual landscape evolution (...) and the invention of the virtual reality (VR) technology on the intended topic of the education transmitted by the games, we classified all Steam games with the education tag based on KIM'S (2016) methodology. To do so, we transmitted their introductory information, whether they support VR and are simulation games or not, to an Excel database. Then we sorted them from 1992 till 2020. The virtual landscape classification methodology revealed a significant relationship between the content, VR technology, and the virtual landscape transformation. The study anticipates a future revolution in the landscape architecture domain by jumping into the digital game industry to enhance the virtual landscape for the sake of itself, not other disciplines. Taking the standpoint of monotonicity reasoning, this paper provides a systematic way of looking at the inference pattern mou in the Mohist text. We have taken a logical, as well as a linguistic perspective, emphasizing features of classical Chinese, the role of context, and making use of any possible clues that we can find from the old text. By applying monotonicity rules we provide a uniform account of why shi er ran examples are valid inferences, and shi er buran (...) examples are counter-examples. (shrink)

Across chronic pain work, trauma treatment, coaching, and performance practice, the same kind of client keeps appearing: capable, self-aware, clear about the pattern they are caught in, and unable to move out of it. Insight does not free them, which is the puzzle the usual explanations stumble on. Some of those explanations place the pattern in the brain, as an outdated prediction; others place it in the body, as stored experience. This paper argues that both make a single (...) mistake. They run together two questions that need to stay apart: what kind of thing a stuck pattern is, and where it runs. Pulling those apart, into what the paper calls architecture and substrate, dissolves the old brain-versus-body argument, explains why insight so often fails to shift a settled pattern, and gives practitioners across very different modalities one way to describe what they are working on. This book, written by two central figures of generative grammar, represent the culmination of some ten years work on phonological theory and specifically on the sound system of English. As such, it is of interest to anyone concerned with phonology in general no less than to the student of English. Their description of the phonological structure of modern English, while not claiming to be exhaustive, reveals the deep and hitherto largely uncharacterized, regularities underlying this system in at least two major (...) areas: in the analysis of English stress, which is shown to be in large measure predictable at the level of both word and phrase; and in the account of vowel and consonant alternations in such cases as sane-sanity, deceive-deception, decide-decision, cone-conic and democrat-democracy respectively. Secondly the book constitutes a major contribution to general phonological theory. Thus, for example, the note of the phonological component of a generative grammar is viewed as the mapping of the abstract string of formatives that constitute the surface structure output of the syntax onto concrete phonetic space, via a series of carefully formalized rules; a clearly-defined, highly abstract view is taken of underlying phonological representations, which in turn are related in a non-arbitrary fashion to the actual phonetic output; and the choice of phonological primes is motivated in terms of certain crucial departures from the earlier set of distinctive features established by Roman Jakobson--to whom the book is dedicated. Thirdly, the book is of major importance for general linguistic theory, as it makes substantive contributions to areas such as: language change and the relation between diachrony and synchrony; the nature and ordering of grammatical rules ; or the key notion of the "cyclical" applications of rules--first introduced in this work in order to handle the assignment of English stress to words and phrases beyond the single-morpheme level, and by now a crucial feature of the transformational rules of generative syntax. In their preface, the authors describe The Sound Pattern of English as "an interim report on work in progress." That this is true is attested to by the debate now being waged on nearly every aspect of phonological theory by followers of Chomsky and Halle. The book has already given rise to considerable critical discussion, ranging from specific points such as the correctness of the particular set of distinctive features established by the authors, to far deeper issues concerning the abstractness of phonological representations, the inter-relation between phonology and the syntactic and semantic components of grammar, the place of phonetics within the field of linguistics. In each example an adjective is separated from its noun by a verb and an unqualified noun. The separation by the verb may be regarded as conditioned by the metre, but not the further separation by the unqualified noun, as the qualified and unqualified nouns are metrically interchangeable. Horace would appear to prefer the wider separation to the less wide.

In recent years, multivariate pattern analysis has been hugely beneficial for cognitive neuroscience by making new experiment designs possible and by increasing the inferential power of functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, and other neuroimaging methodologies. In a similar time frame, “deep learning” has produced a parallel revolution in the field of machine learning and has been employed across a wide variety of applications. Traditional MVPA also uses a form of machine learning, but most commonly with much simpler techniques based (...) on linear calculations; a number of studies have applied deep learning techniques to neuroimaging data, but we believe that those have barely scratched the surface of the potential deep learning holds for the field. In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to deep learning for those new to the technique, explore the logistical pros and cons of using deep learning to analyze neuroimaging data – which we term “deep MVPA,” or dMVPA – and introduce a new software toolbox intended to facilitate dMVPA for neuroscientists everywhere. Most contemporary philosophers are naturalists. A great deal of contention centers around the definition and implications of naturalism. Nina Emery argues that naturalists should also be methodological naturalists and borrow principles of reasoning from scientists. Extending this project means identifying those principles and applying them to debates in metaphysics. This paper carries on this work by considering the evidence for the fine-tuning of the cosmos for life in light of Emery’s “pattern explanation principle,” roughly, the idea that we should (...) not leave patterns in nature unexplained—even if it leads us to affirm the existence of perplexing entities. I argue that, given this principle, fine-tuning for life constitutes a pattern that deserves a robust explanation. Appealing to the pattern of fine-tuning for life undercuts the way many naturalistic philosophers and scientists dismiss or object to fine-tuning inferences. (shrink)

Diffusion plays an essential role in the distribution of predator and prey. We mainly research the diffusion network’s effect on the predator-prey model through bifurcation. First, it is found that the link probability and diffusion parameter can cause Turing instability in the network-organized predator-prey model. Then, the Turing stability region is obtained according to the sufficient condition of Turing instability and the eigenvalues’ distribution. Finally, the biological mechanism is explained through our theoretical results, which are also illustrated by numerical simulation.
