Abstract

Consciousness is typically treated as a mysterious or irreducible phenomenon, but this paper argues that it is a finite, repeatable pattern grounded in physical constraints. The brain is composed of a limited set of atoms, governed by fixed chemical and electrochemical laws, and capable of only a bounded range of configurations. These constraints imply that conscious states, identities, and psychological profiles are finite and recur whenever the same physical patterns reappear. Identity becomes a region in pattern-space rather than a metaphysical essence, and mental disorders become stable pattern variants rather than intrinsic defects. This framework unifies neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy under a finite-state model of mind and generates testable predictions about clustering of conscious states, recurrence across individuals, bounded personality variation, and predictable transitions between mental states. By treating consciousness as the subjective interior of a physical pattern, this theory offers a coherent, scientifically grounded account of mind, identity, and mental variation, with implications for recurrence across time, space, and potentially artificial systems.
