Cancer and its treatment pose challenges that affect not only patients but also their significant others, including intimate partners. Accumulating evidence suggests that couples’ ability to communicate effectively plays a major role in the psychological adjustment of both individuals and the quality of their relationship. Two key conceptual models have been proposed to account for how couple communication impacts psychological and relationship adjustment: the social-cognitive processing (SCP) model and the relationship intimacy (RI) model. These models posit different mechanisms and outcomes, (...) and thus have different implications for intervention. The purpose of this project is to test and compare the utility of these models using comprehensive and methodologically rigorous methods. Aims are: (1) to examine the overall fit of the SCP and RI models in explaining patient and partner psychological and relationship adjustment as they occur on a day-to-day basis and over the course of 1 year; (2) to examine the fit of the models for different subgroups (males vs. females, and patients vs. partners); and (3) to examine the utility of various methods of assessing communication by examining the degree to which baseline indices from different measurement strategies predict self-reported adjustment at 1-year follow up. The study employs a longitudinal, multi-method approach to examining communication processes including: standard self-report questionnaires assessing process and outcome variables collected quarterly over the course of 1 year; smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments to sample participant reports in real time; and laboratory-based couple conversations from which we derive observational measures of communicative behavior and affective expression, as well as vocal indices of emotional arousal. Participants are patients with stage II-IV breast, colon, rectal, or lung cancer and their spouses/partners, recruited from two NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers. Results will be published in scientific journals, presented at scientific conferences, and conveyed to a larger audience through infographics and social media outlets. Philosophical theory about the nature of human beings has far reaching consequences on our understanding of various issues faced by them. Once taken as self-evident, it becomes the foundation on which knowledge gets built. The cause of concern is that this theoretical framework rarely gets questioned despite its inherent limitations and self-defeating consequences, leading to crisis in the concerned field. The field, which is facing crisis today, is that of medicine, and the paradigmatic stance that is responsible for the crisis (...) is Cartesian dualism-a view that mind and body are essentially separate entities. This paper discusses Cartesian dualism in the context of the practice of medicine. Focusing more closely on how disease, health and treatment are defined through this position, the paper builds up its critique by throwing light on its accomplishments, limitations and self-defeating consequences. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how humans conduct transactions, make decisions, and engage in social settings, with applications in important sectors, such as healthcare, banking, and criminal justice. While AI systems offer full efficiency, they additionally pose significant threats and ethical issues, such as accountability gaps and algorithmic biases. The challenge for AI-driven governments is to establish governance structures that effectively manage the evolving threats posed by increasingly complex and autonomous AI systems. This paper seeks to establish a theoretical framework (...) for analyzing AI governance by examining mainly four critical issues: bias, transparency, economic influence, and the need for adaptive regulatory approaches. These issues are selected based on their relevance to the societal and ethical implications of AI, their impact on public trust, and their influence on fairness and equitable outcomes. Through this lens, the paper evaluates current regulatory models and self-regulation initiatives, analyzing their capacity to balance effective oversight with the need for innovation. Drawing on governance theories and socio-technical systems, the paper explores how these frameworks can address AI’s risks while enhancing its positive contributions. In addition, the paper identifies key gaps in existing governance approaches and calls for further research and policy development. Ultimately, this work aims to advance the understanding of AI governance by offering actionable insights that inform the creation of models capable of protecting public interests while enabling technological progress. Current understanding of Mill as a founding father of liberalism is a Cold War creation. Discarding this conception opens the way to a general reassessment of his thought: who was the historical Mill? He did not define himself as liberal and there is no simple template. Most obviously he is a pluralist, defined by a plural heritage received through his father. This framework permitted great creativity in political and social theory, but it was diffuse. The one clear unifying theme is (...) a unique conception of a hierarchy of intellect founded on the inexorable accumulation of positive knowledge. The one important exception to this is political economy. What stands out overall is his individuality, where Mill embodies his own ideal. So apart from political economy, where he could be identified in more conventional terms, his nineteenth-century legacy was personal and incalculably diffusive rather than doctrinaire. This left it ripe for twentieth-century re-invention. (shrink)

Building legal domain ontologies is a prominent challenge in the ontology engineering community. The ontology builders confront issues such as the complexity of the legal domain, the difficulty of applying existing ontology engineering approaches, and the intention of developing legal models faithful to realities. In this paper, we discuss constructing a well-founded legal domain ontology, named CargO-S, for the traceability of goods in logistic sea corridors. For building CargO-S, a pattern-oriented approach is applied, supported by ontology-driven conceptual modeling, ontology layering, (...) and ontology reuse processes. CargO-S is grounded in the unified foundational ontology UFO by using the ontology-driven conceptual modeling language OntoUML. Besides, ontology layering is proposed to simplify the development process by dividing CargO-S into three layers located at different granularity levels: upper, core, and domain. For building the upper and core layers, conceptual ontology patterns are reused from the foundational ontology UFO and the legal core ontology UFO-L. These patterns are applied, either by extension or analogy with legal rules, for building the domain layer. CargO-S is then validated by implementing the ontology as OWL and SWRL rules. Finally, the performance and the semantic accuracy of CargO-S are evaluated using a dual evaluation approach. (shrink)

How do people reason about their opponent in turn-taking games? Often, people do not make the decisions that game theory would prescribe. We present a logic that can play a key role in understanding how people make their decisions, by delineating all plausible reasoning strategies in a systematic manner. This in turn makes it possible to construct a corresponding set of computational models in a cognitive architecture. These models can be run and fitted to the participants’ data in terms of (...) decisions, response times, and answers to questions. We validate these claims on the basis of an earlier game-theoretic experiment about the turn-taking game “Marble Drop with Surprising Opponent”, in which the opponent often starts with a seemingly irrational move. We explore two ways of segregating the participants into reasonable “player types”. The first way is based on latent class analysis, which divides the players into three classes according to their first decisions in the game: Random players, Learners, and Expected players, who make decisions consistent with forward induction. The second way is based on participants’ answers to a question about their opponent, classified according to levels of theory of mind: zero-order, first-order and second-order. It turns out that increasing levels of decisions and theory of mind both correspond to increasing success as measured by monetary awards and increasing decision times. Next, we use the logical language to express different kinds of strategies that people apply when reasoning about their opponent and making decisions in turn-taking games, as well as the ‘reasoning types’ reflected in their behavior. Then, we translate the logical formulas into computational cognitive models in the PRIMs architecture. Finally, we run two of the resulting models, corresponding to the strategy of only being interested in one’s own payoff and to the myopic strategy, in which one can only look ahead to a limited number of nodes. It turns out that the participant data fit to the own-payoff strategy, not the myopic one. This paper presents four theorems that connect continuity postulates in mathematical economics to solvability axioms in mathematical psychology, and ranks them under alternative supplementary assumptions. Theorem 1 connects notions of continuity (full, separate, Wold, weak Wold, Archimedean, mixture) with those of solvability (restricted, unrestricted) under the completeness and transitivity of a binary relation. Theorem 2 uses the primitive notion of a separately continuous function to answer the question when an analogous property on a relation is fully continuous. Theorem 3 provides (...) a portmanteau theorem on the equivalence between restricted solvability and various notions of continuity under weak monotonicity. Finally, Theorem 4 presents a variant of Theorem 3 that follows Theorem 1 in dispensing with the dimensionality requirement and in providing partial equivalences between solvability and continuity notions. This paper engages Bernard Stiegler’s concept of symbolic misery to interrogate the transformations of education in the digital age. Stiegler’s account of the pharmakon—technology as both remedy and poison—provides a philosophical lens for understanding how educational technologies simultaneously democratise access to knowledge and erode the symbolic and relational fabric of pedagogy. The argument develops in three movements. First, it situates symbolic misery within the broader philosophical dialogue on technology, drawing connections to Derrida’s reading of Plato’s Pharmacy, Simondon’s notion of individuation, (...) and Guattari’s reflections on machinic subjectivity. Second, it examines how digital infrastructures risk disindividuation, reducing education to standardised processes of information delivery while undermining desire, meaning, and dialogic engagement. Third, it considers the possibility of renewal through what Stiegler calls negentropic practices of care—educational forms that resist machinic repetition and foster individuation, creativity, and collective sense-making. While examples from contemporary higher education illustrate these dynamics, the paper’s primary aim is to contribute to ongoing debates in educational philosophy by rethinking pedagogy under conditions of symbolic misery. It argues that the future of education depends not on rejecting technology, but on inhabiting its ambivalence—transforming its toxic potential into a resource for symbolic vitality. (shrink)

Philip Pettit's narrative of the eclipse of republican by liberal liberty in late eighteenth-century Britain adds colour and plausibility to his analytical contrast between republican and liberal liberty. The narrative supports his argument that republicanism and liberalism can be helpfully contrasted in terms of non-domination and non- interference conceptions of liberty. While the narrative has not been scrutinized in the literature, it is in fact flawed. The flaws raise new questions about how stringent a value liberty as non-domination is and (...) what motivated the value. The flaws also raise new questions about the significance of liberty as non-interference within the very strand of liberalism that Pettit focuses upon. Finally, the article casts doubt on some aspects of Quentin Skinner's interpretation of republican liberty. (shrink)

This paper presents an attempt to bridge the gap between logical and cognitive treatments of strategic reasoning in games. There have been extensive formal debates about the merits of the principle of backward induction among game theorists and logicians. Experimental economists and psychologists have shown that human subjects, perhaps due to their bounded resources, do not always follow the backward induction strategy, leading to unexpected outcomes. Recently, based on an eye-tracking study, it has turned out that even human subjects who (...) produce the outwardly correct ‘backward induction answer’ use a different internal reasoning strategy to achieve it. The paper presents a formal language to represent different strategies on a finer-grained level than was possible before. The language and its semantics help to precisely distinguish different cognitive reasoning strategies, that can then be tested on the basis of computational cognitive models and experiments with human subjects. The syntactic framework of the formal system provides a generic way of constructing computational cognitive models of the participants of the Marble Drop game. (shrink)

The literature on the democratic legitimacy of judicial review and also on institutionalizing deliberative democracy neglects the possibility of employing juries rather than judges to determine bill-of-rights matters. This neglect is unfortunate, for there are findings emerging especially from deliberative polling that support the feasibility of such juries. Such feasibility would raise a new countermajoritarian concern with judicial review. The argument supporting this new concern also casts fresh light on the traditional countermajoritarian concern.

This article uses the “pariah” dog to investigate the junction of speciesism and racism in colonial India. Using postcolonial theory and animal studies to make its case, it asserts that British colonialism put Indian dogs in a racialized order by calling them “pariahs” or “pests.” The government justified their murder by this classification, which also helped to maintain a colonial “cyno-racism,” an approach of compulsive analogy of native dogs with lower caste Indians, and thus perceived them as racially lower and (...) “killable.” The article investigates the ways in which colonial policies, legislation, and practices, including dog taxation and lethal chambers, perpetuated this racialized distinction. Moreover, it examines how colonial modernism upset Indian views on dogs, which straddles respect and disgust. The article emphasizes the need of decolonizing animal welfare policies since it exposes the continuation of colonial-era sentiments about street dogs in postindependence India. (shrink)

The philosophy of “presence” seeks to challenge current understandings of meaning and understanding. One can trace its origins back to Vico, Dilthey, and Heidegger, though its more immediate exponents include Jean-Luc Nancy, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and such contemporary philosophers of history as Frank Ankersmit and Eelco Runia. The theoretical paradigm of presence conveys how the past is literally with us in the present in significant and material ways: Things we cannot touch nonetheless touch us. This makes presence a post-linguistic or (...) post-discursive theory that challenges current understandings of “meaning” and “interpretation.” Presence provides an overview of the concept and surveys both its weaknesses and its possible uses. In this book, Ethan Kleinberg and Ranjan Ghosh bring together an interdisciplinary group of contributors to explore the possibilities and limitations of presence from a variety of perspectives—history, sociology, literature, cultural theory, media studies, photography, memory, and political theory. The book features critical engagements with the presence paradigm within intellectual history, literary criticism, and the philosophy of history. In three original case studies, presence illuminates the relationships among photography, the past, memory, and the Other. According to the Navya Naiyāyikas, inference is the knowledge, which is produced out of consideration. But what is to be understood by the term ‘consideration’ or ‘parāmarśa’? According to them, parāmarśa or consideration is the factor through the operation of which the inferential conclusion can be attained. Parāmarśa has been defined as the knowledge of the existence of the hetu or reason in the pakṣa or subject, which reason is characterized by its being concomitant with the sādhya, the knowledge in (...) the form of parāmarśa is actually caused by the knowledge of invariable concomitance of probans (hetu) with the probandum (sādhya) and the knowledge of the existence of the hetu in the subject (pakṣa). It has been said by Viśvanātha that the cognition of the existence of probans or hetu in the subject of inference along with the cognition of the prabans or hetu as pervaded by sādhya is called parāmarśa (pakṣasya vyāpyavṛttitvadhīḥ parāmarśa ucyate). The invariable co-existence in the form ‘where there is smoke, there is fire’ is known as vyāpti or invariable concomitance. Here the invariable coexistence (avyabhicārī sāhacarya) between the probans and probandum (i.e., smoke and fire) is the definition of vyāpti. The term ‘co-existence’ means remaining in the same locus of the probans with the probandum, which is not the counter positive of the absolute negation existing in the locus of the hetu. To Gangeśa, the knowledge of the co-existence of the probans and probandum along with the absence of the knowledge of deviation of the probans is the cause of ascertaining vyāpti. Repeated observations, of course, sometimes act as a promoter (prayojaka) in ascertaining vyāpti by removing the doubt of deviation. The doubt of deviation can be removed sometimes by Tarka or sometimes by the absence of the collocation of causes of doubt, which is called svataḥsiddhaḥ. Gangeśa admits sāmānyalakṣaṇā as a pratyāsatti in ascertaining vyāpti between smoke-in-general and fire-in-general. To him, the super-normal connection through universal (sāmānyalakṣaṇā pratyāsatti) has got a prominent role in ascertaining vyāpti. If somebody challenges about the validity of the syllogistic argument in the form “The mountain is fiery as it possesses smoke” (parvato vahnimān dhūmāt), the philosophers of Nyāya and Navya-nyāya persuasion will justify the same with the help of five constituents (avayava-s). The process is called parāthānumāna (syllogistic argument for making others understand). The constituents of a syllogism are proposition (pratijňā), reason (hetu), example (udāharaṇa), application (upanaya), and conclusion (nigamana). (shrink)

This article explores Rabindranath Tagore’s ethical-aesthetic vision that ushered in a form of planetary humanism, following his critique of European notions of development and progress that considered nature and her resources in purely utilitarian and commercial terms. He considered it to be a form of political cannibalism that fed on the weak for its own sustenance, utilizing scientific knowledge and asserting a kind of technological colonialism that ultimately led to what we confront today as the climate crisis and ecological destabilization. Through a close study of his plays, essays (1890–1925), and select songs, this paper traces Tagore’s understanding of freedom as a shift from the anthropological domain to the cosmological dimensions of existence in terms of a holy communion. It argues that this shift cultivates a creative unity that redefines human freedom—not as domination over nature or others, but as liberation from intrinsically repressive epistemologies and oppressive power structures that sought to destroy the wonder that characterizes the human soul when it confronts elemental forms of nature and the cosmos with a joy that transcends the physical and the material. In doing so, Tagore offers an alternative civilizational discourse that seeks to celebrate life by cherishing the universal through the particular (and vice versa), and through this interconnectedness alone, the consciousness of being human, finds expression. Even though agriculture was not the central thrust of planning in Mao-era China (1949–1976), starting in the 1950s, the party-state progressively nationalized land, reorganized social relations in the countryside, and instituted a universal system of wages that fundamentally reshaped rural China. Quantifying and measuring agricultural labor, in particular, developed into an increasingly important task as the state became not just the sole purveyor but also the sole provider of people’s incomes. At the heart of this measurement was the system of (...) work points. The Work Point System quantified every aspect of rural life by classifying every activity within the rural economy in terms of the number of points needed to perform it. Putatively, every activity was thus reduced to a single number (usually between 1 and 10 for men; and 1 and 9 for women), accounted for on a daily basis. As a result, people’s relationship to numbers and quantification changed in new and fundamental ways. In this paper, I explore the history of the Work Point System, tracing its rationale and how it came to influence rural life and rural imaginations. (shrink)

This article studies the characterization of Kṛṣṇa in a fifteenth-century Odia Mahābhārata by focusing on two cardinal episodes from the epic. The two episodes in question include the infamous disrobing of Draupadī in the assembly hall and Kṛṣṇa’s theophany in the Kuru court prior to the war. In the Odia text, both these episodes meet a significantly different conclusion when compared to their Sanskrit counterpart. While in the Sanskrit Mahābhārata, the episodes emerge as opportunities to establish the divinity of Kṛṣṇa, (...) the Odia retellings find a way to destabilize—if not overwrite—his agency. Kṛṣṇa does not directly save Draupadī from her humiliation and routes his duty to another deity, while his theophany malfunctions into a humorous conclusion in the Kuru court. Kṛṣṇa, of course, the text accepts, is a divine figure in every supreme sense of the term. Yet his divinity finds hurdles, and his designs falter, more often than not. The Mahābhārata in question was composed by Sāralādāsa, who self-identified as a Śūdra saint and lived in Odisha in the fifteenth century. I argue that in a largely Vaiṣṇava political landscape of early modern Odisha, the Odia epic’s complicated characterization of Kṛṣṇa sheds light into a hitherto unexplored aspect of the religious history of the region. Finally, the article aims to enhance our understanding of the regional retellings of the Mahābhārata in general and the Odia rendition in particular, on which there remains a paucity of scholarly literature. The ethical behaviour (EB) of professional management accountants in business (PMAIBs) is critical due to their increasingly powerful roles in organizations amidst rising ethical challenges, yet it remains underexplored. This article contributes to accounting ethics literature by examining this understudied ‘real-action’ stage of Rest’s ethical decision-making (EDM) of an under-represented section of accountants, Indian PMAIBs, through narratives of their own experiences of workplace ethical dilemmas, using qualitative content analysis. The coding schemes, initially grounded in IESBA-code and ethics literature, were refined (...) with insights from narratives. Based on 173 survey responses, the study found that 64% of respondents faced ethical dilemmas, most commonly in ‘preparation and presentation of information’. The successful resolution was ‘enabled’ by organizational-level policies and support and individual ‘virtues’ such as courage, justice, honesty and integrity. ‘Challenges’ stemmed from pressures (from superiors and peers) and cultural attitudes such as loyalty, obedience and conformity. The professional ethics code emerged as a critical ‘safeguard’. Moreover, the resolution steps of PMAIBs were aligned with IESBA-code guidance, though few escalated ethical issues externally. The findings support the virtue ethics and institutional theory, highlighting the need for a virtue-focused, culturally attuned ethics code and education, as well as stronger organizational safeguards. Hughes et al. (2005) have argued that identity formation among persons with disabilities is influenced by the way exclusionary processes of society curtail opportunities to participate in contemporary cultures. Persons with disabilities find it difficult to question social systems and relations that are contradictory to their own views of self (Watson 2002). Persons with impairments often attempt to negotiate their lives in order to be acceptable by functioning as “normally” as possible so that they can become assimilated into the larger (...) society (Shakespeare 1996). The process of identity creation is influenced by social and cultural practices, wherein disabled people have to negotiate their identities and manage stigma on an everyday basis in society. The chapter uses personal narratives to trace the trajectory of identity formation of two women with disabilities from Global South. Disability narratives have almost always been framed through negative metaphors, in the language of personal tragedy and immense struggle of the disabled person and their families. This chapter attempts to disrupt the existing disability narratives by transforming the metaphors located within cultural, social and institutional contexts, countering the abject through the language of lived experiences of these women. Using auto-ethnographic narratives and within the broader tenets of identity theory and intersectionality, the authors elaborate their own lived experiences, and how they balanced their belongingness with their differences, and act out their roles which may not be in accordance with societal expectations of a woman with disability. The study employs netnography as a tool to measure the use of digital media strategies, components of branding communication, and the impact of digital interaction on consumers’ behavior. Netnography was utilized as the primary research approach to analyze customer engagement with athleisure brands in the Indian market. The findings show that most of the brands experienced growth across all platforms during the “New Trend,” except for Koral on YouTube and Varley on Instagram, which experienced a decline, and Grammicci remained unchanged (...) across its platform. The study also shows that brands that have consistent commitment across all levels of digital engagement to convey product positioning and its value with respect to the current fashion are better placed competitively. The study points out that, especially in India, where the retail market is multifaceted and technology-driven, influencer marketing through video content, using visual images and even engaging an influencer in marketing the product, with brands achieving more consumer interaction and involvement while using such strategies. The results obtained from the study are useful in assisting brands in strategizing on how to engage customers effectively in countries such as India and also in executing effective digital marketing strategies in many other countries. Ahmed spent countless hours at the Batavia Public Library reading Agatha Christie and Louisa May during her formative years. She received her BA and MAT from the University of Chicago in 1993 and worked as a high school English teacher for 7 years in the suburbs of Chicago and New York City. The exploration of Central Bank digital currencies (CBDCs) is fostering opportunities for a revolutionary change in financial systems around the world. Nonetheless, the design and implementation of CBDCs pose serious concerns regarding data privacy. A crucial takeaway from this study is the compromise between enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining the privacy of user data. This paper highlights data protection laws and privacy levels in CBDC transactions across countries. Also, comparison of prominent CBDCs with Oasis Network emphasizes the need for CBDC (...) privacy model development through innovation. In this overview, I begin by situating De-Moralizing Gay Rights within the field of queer studies/queer theory. I then delineate the book’s principal arguments. The book critically interrogates three sets of distortions in 21st century public discourse on LGBT+ rights in the United States. The first relates to the critique of pinkwashing, often advanced by scholars who claim to be proponents of a radical politics. I suggest that this critique sometimes suffers from analytical overreach. The second concerns a recent US (...) Supreme Court decision, Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), a judgment that established marriage equality across the 50 states. I argue that this judgment mobilizes the Court’s endorsement of two elements of homonormativity: amatonormativity and repronormativity. Instead of endorsing homonormativity, the Court should have employed an approach based on decisional minimalism. The third distortion occurs in Kenji Yoshino’s theorization of the concept of gay covering. Yoshino’s calls to dismantle cultural demands for gay covering turn out, I argue, to constitute an oppressive command to ‘gay-flaunt.’. (shrink)

Emphasizing the need to scrutinize the division between thought and technology, this paper examines how Derrida revisits Martin Heidegger's 'question concerning technology' under the framework of originary technicity. The term is discussed as an alternative expression for Derrida's earlier concepts of 'writing' or 'archi-writing,' with a focus on its alignment with practical technology, exemplified in everyday writing facilitating ideal concepts and scientific precision. The paper delves into emerging approaches to signification, including programmed language input into machine learning, and their impact (...) on intelligibility. It emphasizes the augmentation required in conditions constituting discreteness, and illustrates archi-writing's role in facilitating comprehension despite lacking inherent meaning. Derrida's view of technology and machines as fundamentally unintelligible is highlighted, with case studies from two novels, namely The Circle and Several People Are Typing. In Several People Are Typing, ambitopic disruption occurs in bodily functions post-transcendence, while in The Circle, it manifests in the enigmatic nature of a comatose individual's thoughts, suggesting potential future innovations. The paper introduces the concept of "Ambitopia" as a response to ambiguity in archival spacing and temporalization, emphasizing liberation over confinement. Derrida's dichotomy between "le futur" and "l'avenir" is applied to underscore the unforeseeable future's open realm, embodied by Ambitopia's disruptive forces agitating events and questioning their feasibility. The present paper considers whether the Consciousness or Puruṣa in Sāṁkhya can be an enjoyer (bhoktā) who is taken as indifferent (udāsīna) and beyond transformation (apariṇāmī) or not. If it is considered as indifferent and beyond transformation, it is defunct (niṣkriya) in nature. In reply, one justification is given by the Sāṁkhya that the Consciousness or Puruṣa possesses the property of being an enjoyer (bhoktṛtva) not in reality (tattvata) but metaphorical (aupacārika). It seems that the Sāṁkhya contradicts its philosophical position (...) as it proves that the bondage, release and migration have no relation with Purusa. In fact, Puruṣa is not at all in bondage—na kaścit Puruṣo badhyate. Hence it cannot migrate and relate with this-worldly matter (saṁsāra)—na kaścit samsārāti. Purusa is also beyond release or emancipation—na kaścit Puruṣaḥ muktaḥ 18. So far as the actual state is concerned, bondage, worldly existence and release are not befitting with the nature of Purusa. It is commonly seen that a particular bound individual alone tries to get rid of it by seeking release. Hence, Puruṣa can neither be in a state of liberation nor be in a state of bondage. Hence, the property of being inactive or defunct is the real one of Puruṣa while the property of Puruṣa as active or functional is nothing but imposition. (shrink)

The paper deals with the concepts of determinism and freedom as found in the philosophy of the Indian origin. Actually, there is a long controversy regarding these concepts among different schools of philosophy. The problem has been dealt with and solved by Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. My effort is to justify Radhakrishnan’s position with some favourable arguments from the Indian standpoint. As per an observation of Radhakrishnan it is concluded that both the divine power and human effort are essential for any (...) type of success in our life. If these two factors remain in a cooperative stage, there is neither pure determinism nor pure human effort, but the amalgamation of both. Our karmas in the past can be brough into future or can be minimized if our will-force is in the full swing. If we can invest our energy or power, we can change the map of karma, even the divine interference. This has been shown with help of various arguments. (shrink)

The present paper deals with the idea of understanding Vedic ethics as a code of righteous living, in the light of Mīmāṁsā philosophy. The paper also intends to reflect upon the possibility of such methods as a means of attaining liberation. In other words, the Vedas provide us with prescriptive codes of right and wrong actions. It commands us about duties and non-duties, through the performance of rituals, in order to lead a good life. We know that human endeavours are (...) primarily based on attaining the desired, and to prevent the unwanted ends. Hence, the entire effort of human actions lies in the fact that we want to attain the cessation of sufferings. This paves the way for studies in Soteriology, and the question arises that, could the Vedas be considered as a literature on Soteriology. The paper consists of a number of sections. The initial ones involve the linguistic analysis of the Vedic statements based on Sanskrit grammar and semantics. These are aimed at depicting the manner in which Vedic sentences act as prescriptive ethical codes. The latter ones deal with the questions raised by the opposing schools, namely Sāṁkhya-Yoga, against the idea of considering Vedas as a supreme sanction of means, leading beings to their salvation from empirical sufferings, and their plausible responses. It is generally believed that the greatest asset of human being is the moral values and according to theist such values have been infused in human by the creator. By accepting such view we simply get rid of any effort of searching the origin of morality or ethics and also transfer the responsibility of being ethical on the almighty. But when atheist denied God, the liability of being moral comes to human and also the significant question arose why we should (...) be moral. Probably more important is the hunt for the origin of our morality. In this article we have discussed about that origin of our morals in Nietzsche’s view as he was one of the strongest atheist of all time and in the light of the Darwinian evolutionary philosophy which inspired the modern age atheists. In this course, we have showed that how Nietzsche’s individual-centric value system faced the demand of societal explanation of interactive moral outcome and Darwinian school of evolutionary thinking articulates such issue in a broader perspective normally dealt with the philosophical views of human ethics.
