Background: Autonomy and participation are threatened within the group of older people living in nursing homes. Evidence suggests that healthcare personnel act on behalf of older people but are still excluding them from decision-making in everyday care. Objective: The purpose was to describe registered nurses’ experience of caring for older people in nursing homes to promote autonomy and participation. Research design: A descriptive design with a phenomenological approach was used. Data were collected by semi-structured individual interviews. Analysis was inspired by (...) Giorgi’s method. Participants and research context: A total of 13 registered nurses from 10 nursing homes participated. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval was obtained from the Regional Research Ethics Committee. Informed consent was achieved and confidentiality guaranteed. Findings: The essence of caring for older people in nursing homes to promote autonomy and participation consisted of registered nurses’ awareness of older people’s frailty and the impact of illness to support health and well-being, and awareness of acknowledgement in everyday life and trusting relationships. Paying attention to older people by being open to the persons’ wishes were aspects that relied on registered nurses’ trusting relationships with older people, their relatives and surrounding healthcare personnel. The awareness reflected challenges in caring to promote older people’s right to autonomy and participation in nursing homes. Registered nurses’ strategies, hopes for and/or concerns about development of everyday life in nursing homes were revealed and mirrored their engagement in caring for older people. Discussion and conclusion: Awareness of older people’s frailty in nursing homes and the importance of maintained health and well-being were described as the main source for promoting autonomy and participation. Everyday life and care in nursing homes needs to be addressed from both older people’s and healthcare personnel’s perspectives, to promote autonomy and participation for residents in nursing homes. Background Thirst and dry mouth are common symptoms in terminally ill patients. In their day-to-day practice, palliative care physicians regularly encounter ethical dilemmas, especially regarding artificial hydration. Few studies have focused on thirst and the ethical dilemmas palliative care physicians encounter in relation to this, leading to a knowledge gap in this area. Aim The aim of this study was to explore palliative care physicians’ experiences of ethical challenges in relation to thirst in terminally ill patients. Methods A qualitative interview (...) study with an inductive approach was conducted. Sixteen physicians working in four different specialised palliative care units and one geriatric care unit in different hospitals in Sweden were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed with a reflexive thematic analysis. Results When presented with an ethical challenge relating to thirst, physicians attempted to balance benefits and harms while emphasizing respect for the patient’s autonomy. The ethical challenges in this study were: Starting, continuing or discontinuing drips; lack of evidence and traditions create doubt; and lack of interest and time may result in patient suffering. Conclusions All physicians in this study reported that “Starting, continuing or discontinuing drips” was the main ethical challenge they encountered, where some were so accustomed to the decision that they had a standard answer ready to offer patients and families. Physicians reported that drips were a symbol of thirst quenching, life and survival but were not necessary in end-of-life care. Others questioned the traditions regarding thirst and emphasised drips in particular. (shrink)

Can a man intend to do the impossible? That is, can a man undertake to do some action, A—and not merely to come as close as possible to doing A with the hope that the doing of A will result—when he believes he has no chance of doing A?

Building on two nonproblematic claims, I argue for a qualified endorsement of Hume's intuition that there must be a time-difference between cause and effect. Those claims are: (i) that the statement 'A caused B' is meaningful only if we have a criterion for saying 'A' and 'B' refer to distinct events; and (ii) that an adequate view of what it is to be an event must illuminate the enterprise of seeking to establish a singular causal statement. B. F. Skinner has argued that those who are serious about ending war, pollution, etc., must face the fact that the received methods of changing behavior have proved ineffective. According to Skinner, we must replace 'weak' methods of control such as control via praise and blame and control via Rousseau's 'natural contingencies of things' with Skinner's 'strong' methods of control. It is argued that Skinner's case for the continued ineffectiveness of such methods of control rests on the unargued assumption that (...) we are stuck with the highly centralized forms of social organization that characterize present-day advanced societies, forms that place barriers between man and man and between man and nature. Drawing on the anarchist tradition in political thought, it is argued that a radical decentralization — which cannot be dismissed as Utopian — would bring a new effectiveness to what Skinner dismisses as 'weak' forms of control. This volume offers an introduction to consciousness research within philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, from a philosophical perspective and with an emphasis on the history of ideas and core concepts. The book begins by examining consciousness as a modern mystery. Thereafter, the book introduces philosophy of mind and the mind-body problem, and proceeds to explore psychological, philosophical and neuroscientific approaches to mind and consciousness. The book then presents a discussion of mysterianist views of consciousness in response to what can be perceived (...) as insurmountable scientific challenges to the problem of consciousness. As a response to mysterianist views, the next chapters examine radical approaches to rethinking the problem of consciousness, including externalist approaches. The final two chapters present the author's personal view of the problem of consciousness. Consciousness remains a mystery for contemporary science-a mystery raising many questions. Why does consciousness persist as a mystery? Are we humans not intelligent enough to solve the riddle of consciousness? If we can solve this mystery, what would it take? What research would we need to conduct? Moreover, the mystery of consciousness prompts the larger question of how well the cognitive sciences have actually advanced our understanding of ourselves as human beings. After all, consciousness is not just a minor part of our existence. Without consciousness, we would not be human beings at all. B. F. Skinner argues in Beyond Freedom and Dignity (New York 1971) that only his theory of man is compatible with a ‘scientific’ approach to human behavior. I argue that Skinner's entirely open‐ended view of man is inadequate for his own purposes in that it leaves no room for the claim that certain value judgments are universally valid, something I argue Skinner is committed to despite an explicit avowal in one place of cultural relativism. I then go on to show (...) that a modification of Skinner's theory of man which builds on Spinoza's notion of conatus would provide one with a theory‐based rationale for universally valid judgments without involving one in a ‘non‐scientific’ approach to human behavior. Specifically, I argue that such a Spinozistic modification would provide one with a theory‐based guarantee that man will not evolve in such a way that a truly scientific observer would deem a totalitarian state good. The disjunction effect (Tversky and Shafir in Psychol Sci 3:305–309, 1992) occurs when decision makers prefer option x (versus y) when knowing that event A occurs and also when knowing that event A does not occur, but they refuse x (or prefer y) when not knowing whether or not A occurs. This form of incoherence violates Savage’s (Cognition 57:31–95, 1954) sure-thing principle, one of the basic axioms of the rational theory of decision-making. The phenomenon was attributed to a lack of (...) clear reasons for accepting an option (x) when the subjects are under uncertainty. Through a pragmatic analysis of the task and a consequent reformulation of it, we show that the effect does not depend on the presence of uncertainty, but on the introduction into the text-problem of a non-relevant goal. Phosphatidylinositol 4,5‐bisphosphate (PI4,5P2) is a key lipid signaling molecule that regulates a vast array of biological activities. PI4,5P2 can act directly as a messenger or can be utilized as a precursor to generate other messengers: inositol trisphosphate, diacylglycerol, or phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5‐trisphosphate. PI4,5P2 interacts with hundreds of different effector proteins. The enormous diversity of PI4,5P2 effector proteins and the spatio‐temporal control of PI4,5P2 generation allow PI4,5P2 signaling to control a broad spectrum of cellular functions. PI4,5P2 is synthesized by phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinases (...) (PIPKs). The array of PIPKs in cells enables their targeting to specific subcellular compartments through interactions with targeting factors that are often PI4,5P2 effectors. These interactions are a mechanism to define spatial and temporal PI4,5P2 synthesis and the specificity of PI4,5P2 signaling. In turn, the regulation of PI4,5P2 effectors at specific cellular compartments has implications for understanding how PI4,5P2 controls cellular processes and its role in diseases. (shrink)

Let me remind you that these deep philosophical books were written by Maria daVenza Tillmanns, a professional philosopher dedicated to the study of philosophizing with children, who has gained valuable experience in this field. Maria’s books are inspired by her work with her students at El Toyon Elementary School in National City (California), with whom Maria held philosophy (...) with children classes for three years before COVID-19. With parental permission, the children provided their drawings, which are used as illustrations for the books. I read Why We Are in Need of Tales, Part III with great pleasure. The focus of this book is on making decisions, sometimes very hard decisions. In Part II, the focus is on dreams — hopes and wishes we have for life. This book looks at how we may best decide how to make those hopes and wishes come true. And the answer Huk and Tuk suggest is deceptively easy: by making decisions “with your eyes wide open.” (5, p. ix). The author of this excellent book managed to describe how to make decisions with your eyes wide open through the playful dialogue between Huk and Tuk. The books are written in dialogue so the reader immediately plunges into the context of a lively conversation. Dialogue not only sharpens attention, but also invites the reader to participate in the conversation. In this way, the reader becomes a listener at the same time. (shrink)

Elisabeth Maria Post (1755–1812) was a White Dutch poet and novelist. One of her brothers owned plantations in Guyana, a country in South America that was under Dutch control at the time. This inspired her to write a novel about a Dutch planter in Guyana, which is excerpted in this chapter. The novel is titled Reinhart, or Nature and Religion (Reinhart, of Natuur en Godsdienst) and is a good example of literary sentimentalism: it mainly appeals to the readers’ emotions (...) and explores the narrator’s feelings in depth. The narrator is a fictional Dutch man called Reinhart who moves to Guyana to become a planter. Reinhart criticizes transatlantic slavery, though he also makes excuses for it. He additionally describes Black people as naturally inferior to White Europeans in both intelligence and feeling. In short, while the novel explicitly criticizes transatlantic slavery, it also contains proslavery and racist elements. (shrink)

The paper is devoted to the Early Christian mosaic decoration of Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome and focuses on the image of the Virgin and its role within the general program. The four surviving representations depict Mary in rich princely garb, notably an ornamented, golden dalmatica and jeweled headdress. With this elegant attire, these images strongly resemble those of empresses and other high-ranking women of the time and are often seen to be predecessors of later iconographic type, the (...) Maria Regina. While this representation could have been determined by notions formulated by contemporary theologians about the figure of the Theotokos, it could also be the result of the earliest development of Marian iconography. In this paper the exact meaning of the image of the Virgin and of its female counterpart seated on the other side of Christ’s throne in the enigmatic composition of the Adoration of the Magi is considered to be of secondary importance to the very fact that both figures visually function within Late Antique associative techniques and perform the role of allegories. This multiple role and possible readings of the figure of Mary are further explored through comparison with intentional parallels of the Virgin’s image and several protagonists of the Old Testament cycle depicted in the Early Christian Sta Maria Maggiore mosaics. Una mujer que nació en 1607 en la ciudad de Colonia, creció y vivió la mayor parte de su vida en las Provincias Unidas de Utrecht, de formación religiosa protestante calvinista y en los últimos años de su vida formó parte de una comunidad religiosa que cultivó la experiencia religiosa desde la vida interior, declinando su pertenencia a cualquier Iglesia. Fue una (...) erudita, filósofa especialista en retórica, teología, matemáticas, medicina y jurisprudencia, escribió obras poéticas, filosóficas y científicas, conservamos muy pocas porque la mayoría de esta fueron destruidas por ella misma en su vida adulta al unirse a la congregación religiosa de Jean de Labadie. Y declinar su amor por el conocimiento académico en favor de su amor por el conocimiento de la Naturaleza divina. Entre los principales temas que durante el siglo XVII fueron centro de análisis, reflexión y debate se encuentran aquellos relativos a la educación superior de las mujeres, sobre este tema específico escribió una disertación filosófica donde demostró que no existía ningún argumento científico y filosófico para excluir a las mujeres de la educación superior, sino únicamente la costumbre, la falta de recursos económicos, espacio privado y tiempo para dedicarse a esa tarea. Despojando así toda antigua creencia sobre la incapacidad de las mujeres para los estudios científicos superiores. Si bien hoy sigue siendo una desconocida y despreciada por su rechazo a la erudición por la erudición, en favor del conocimiento divino. Las investigaciones filosóficas que realizó fueron y son parte de la historia del pensamiento filosófico y religioso, demostró que una mujer por sí misma puede ser erudita (filósofa y científica) , poliglota (dominó más de una docena de lenguas clásicas y vernáculas), artista, teóloga y jefa de una comunidad religiosa.
