As a rapidly growing emerging capital market, China has attracted the attention of both investors and scholars. To alleviate the expectation of external users of listed companies’ financial statements to “discount” items in levels 2 and 3 of the fair value measurement, listed companies will treat these items as conditional conservatism. It refers to the conservatism of companies when confirming bad news of unrealized gains and losses sooner than confirming good news. A sample was selected for empirical analysis to verify (...) the existence of this relationship. The results are as follows: the higher the proportion of levels 2 and 3 fair value measurements, the stronger the conditional conservatism of the company’s profit and loss; the higher the proportion of cash holding of operating activities in a company’s operating profit and the higher the audit quality, the higher the proportion of levels 2 and 3 fair value hierarchy measurements, and the stronger the conditional conservatism of the company’s profit and loss; and the lesser the internal control defects in a company, the higher the proportion of levels 2 and 3 fair value hierarchy measurements, and the stronger the conditional conservatism of its profit and loss. The findings provide empirical evidence to identify listed companies adopting conditional conservatism to alleviate discounting expectations of fair value items of financial statements’ external users and provide a reference for improving the standards and regulation of listed companies. Predictive analytics and early warning systems are now widely used in nursing practice worldwide. While these tools can improve efficiency and patient safety, but at the same time posing ethical challenges related to data privacy, algorithmic fairness, accountability, professional autonomy, and patient rights. Through a systematic rapid review, we identify the major ethical risks in nursing contexts and propose actionable governance pathways to inform clinical practice and policy. This study used a systematic rapid review, searching eight databases—PubMed, Embase, Web of (...) Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Ovid, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest—for English-language articles published from 2015 through May 2025. Two reviewers independently screened records and extracted data, with a third reviewer resolving disagreements, yielding 22 included studies. Using inductive thematic analysis, we summarized the ethical-risk dimensions and governance pathways of predictive analytics and early warning systems in nursing practice, and conducted an overall quality appraisal of the included literature. The included studies came from 11 countries, with publication volume rising markedly in recent years—reflecting growing attention to ethical issues in nursing. Most were reviews or commentaries, with fewer qualitative and mixed-methods studies. Thematic analysis identified five ethical-risk dimensions: (i) Data- and Algorithm-Related Ethical Risks; (ii) Professional Role and Responsibility Attribution Risks; (iii) Patient Rights and Humane-Care Ethical Risks; (iv) Ethical-Governance and Misuse Risks; and (v) Technological Accessibility and Social Acceptance Barriers. In response, the literature proposes four governance pathways—Technical–Data Governance, Clinical Human–Machine Collaboration, Organizational-Capacity Building, and Institutional–Policy Regulation—with concrete measures including privacy protection, algorithmic-bias monitoring and fairness audits, transparency and explainability enhancement, nurse training and digital literacy, interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation, and policy and regulatory guidelines. Predictive analytics and early warning systems in nursing practice show substantial promise yet are accompanied by multidimensional ethical risks. For the first time in a nursing context, this study proposes a “five ethical-risk dimensions–four governance pathways” framework, offering actionable ethical-governance guidance for nurses, administrators, and policymakers. Future work should pursue interdisciplinary, multicenter empirical studies to evaluate the framework’s feasibility and effectiveness and to align technological benefits with ethical values, thereby improving nursing quality and patient safety. Purpose This study aims to explore the latent classes of compassion fatigue among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses and identify the factors that influence their compassion fatigue. Methods Between November 2024 and February 2025, 1029 ICU nurses were selected as study participants using convenience sampling. Data were gathered through general demographic questionnaires, the Chinese version of the Short Scale of Compassion Fatigue (CFSS), the Occupational Stress Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, as well as the Professional Identity Scale. A latent (...) profile analysis (LPA) was conducted based on the three dimensions of the CFSS as observed indicators. Additionally, factors influencing outcomes were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate logistic regression methods. Ethical considerations This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. Results A total of 1029 valid questionnaires were obtained, resulting in an effective response rate of 93.46%. The average score on the ICU Nurse Compassion Fatigue Scale was 60.00 ± 27.36 points. Three distinct profiles were identified: low compassion fatigue–low secondary trauma type (33.04%), moderate compassion fatigue–overall fluctuation type (48.30%), and high compassion fatigue–high burnout type (18.66%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that health status, sleep quality, highest education level, occupational stress, professional identity, and social support significantly influence the potential compassion fatigue profiles among critical care nurses ( p <.05). Conclusion Compassion fatigue varies significantly among ICU nurses. To effectively manage and reduce compassion fatigue, nursing managers should create tailored intervention plans that consider the unique factors influencing each specific profile. (shrink)

Our understanding of the cognitive processes involved in reading has been advanced by computational models that simulate those processes. Unfortunately, most of these models have been developed to explain the reading of English and other alphabetic languages, with relatively fewer efforts to examine whether or not the assumptions of these models also explain what has been learned from other languages and, in particular, non-alphabetic writing systems like Chinese. In this article, we will review those computational models that have been developed (...) to explain the reading of Chinese, with the goal of comparing their theoretical assumptions to those of models that explain the reading of English. Our analysis indicates that there are both points of convergence and divergence between the theoretical assumptions of Chinese versus English models, suggesting that the cognitive systems supporting reading may be differentially influenced by features of the languages and/or writing systems, or that certain theoretical assumptions developed to explain the reading of one language might be adapted to explain the reading of others. This study aims to investigate the cognitive differences and ethical concerns regarding artificial intelligence in healthcare between the public and healthcare professionals and to provide empirical evidence for ethical governance and risk communication. A text mining approach was adopted to comparatively analyze Chinese public social media and professional medical forums. A total of 4,042 valid texts were included, comprising 2,088 from the public corpus and 1,954 from the healthcare professional corpus. SnowNLP sentiment analysis, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model, (...) and co-word network analysis were applied to reconstruct and compare the structures of concern between the two groups. Both groups were dominated by positive sentiment toward artificial intelligence in healthcare, although healthcare professionals showed a higher positive tendency (75.2%) than the public (68.0%), while the public exhibited a higher degree of caution. LDA topic analysis and co-word network analysis showed that both groups focused heavily on the role positioning and replacement boundaries of artificial intelligence. However, their specific focal concerns differed significantly. Healthcare professionals placed greater emphasis on occupational impact and practice-related concerns, mainly involving clinical application, responsibility, and humanistic care. In contrast, the public focused more on technical conditions and risk perception, emphasizing practical uses in healthcare settings, the reliability of data and models, and issues of responsibility and risk. Although both the public and healthcare professionals hold relatively positive attitudes toward artificial intelligence in healthcare, their cognitive structures exhibit clear group differences. The subsequent ethical governance and advancement of artificial intelligence in healthcare require clarifying its functional boundaries while simultaneously addressing the practice-related concerns of healthcare professionals and the risk-related concerns of the public. As future providers of medical services, nursing students require strong ethical sensitivity to effectively manage clinical ethical dilemmas. However, studies have shown that they often exhibit lower ethical sensitivity than practicing nurses, which may hinder their ability to address ethical challenges competently. This systematic review aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions in enhancing the ethical sensitivity of nursing students. The findings will offer practical guidelines and a theoretical foundation for advancing nursing ethics education. This review adhered to (...) the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We conducted comprehensive searches across nine databases (PubMed, Embase, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP (Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database), and Wanfang Data) to identify relevant studies published through December 2024. Two researchers independently performed the screening, data extraction, and quality assessment, with any disagreements resolved through discussion to reach a consensus. Twenty-one studies were included. The results indicated that current educational interventions primarily focus on two dimensions: teaching methods and curricular content. Among teaching methods, situational participatory learning was found to be more effective than traditional didactic instruction in enhancing nursing students’ ethical sensitivity. The curricular content was organized into a three-dimensional framework encompassing fundamental theories, clinical practice, and interdisciplinary integration, establishing a comprehensive knowledge system ranging from ethical principles to emerging technological ethics. This review confirmed that interactive teaching methods effectively enhance nursing students’ ethical sensitivity, although they require significant resources. Future nursing education should integrate cross-cultural competencies, spiritual care training, and emerging ethical issues while establishing comprehensive ethics curricula within clinical training. Such approaches will better prepare nurses for ethical challenges in practice. (shrink)

This paper adopts a meta-scientific method to point out that the three major obstacles hindering the formation of a unified system theory in modern science are inconsistent concepts, conflicting basic assumptions, and differences in the selection of mathematical languages. It focuses on the issue of “selection of basic assumptions/axioms” for indepth research. The paper analyzes the widespread problem of logical self-circulation in core theories across multiple fields of modern science, arguing that this problem is also an important reason for theoretical (...) stagnation and the inability to explain phenomena in depth, and may lead to consequences in practical applications. In response, the paper reflects on the limitations of revolutionary methods and proposes a generalization method as a solution. The core of this method is to inherit the reasonable parts of Newtonian mechanics, reconstruct the physical theory of complex systems based on the latest cognition, adhere to clear concepts, logical self-consistency, and unrefuted axioms, and select axioms based on the criterion of supporting the sustainable development of human society. Finally, it points out that future research can be conducted in three directions: interdisciplinary research, new perspectives in the philosophy of science, and optimization of the logical structure of theories, so as to promote the improvement and development of scientific theories. Demand for healthcare chatbots has surged in recent years, with companies and governments actively investing in this technology. Drawing on care ethics and technology anthropomorphism literature, this research examines how businesses can design chatbots to provide more supportive healthcare services. Specifically, we explore how anthropomorphic features affect user perceptions and their willingness to adopt chatbots, particularly in the context of stigmatized health conditions. Across six experiments, including a Facebook advertising study, we find that, when consumers perceive the target health condition (...) as highly stigmatized, they are more likely to adopt a robot-like chatbot than a human-like one. This preference arises from the belief that human-like chatbots are more likely to make social judgments, which is undesirable for consumers facing stigma. Supporting this social judgment threat mechanism, we find that this effect diminishes when the human-like chatbot lacks facial features. Our findings advance technology anthropomorphism research by showing how design choices affect chatbot adoption in sensitive contexts. By integrating care ethics, we emphasize the need for empathetic, non-judgmental design in digital health technologies. This research also contributes to stigma research, showing how thoughtful chatbot design can reduce stigma-driven disengagement. Practically, we provide actionable guidance for designers and policymakers, urging them to tailor chatbot features to the needs of stigmatized users to ensure inclusivity. Our research highlights the ethical responsibility of marketers to design technologies that reduce, rather than reinforce, stigma, thus contributing to a broader discourse on business ethics in technology. Background Ethical issues in nursing care for older adults in community setting are becoming more visible as population aging accelerates. However, existing studies are fragmented and lack a comprehensive synthesis to inform ethical practice and governance. Aims To identify major ethical issues, their impacts, and related strategies in nursing care for older adults in community setting, providing evidence for ethical practice, education, and policy development. Methods A scoping review was conducted following JBI methodology. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, Ovid-Embase, (...) PhilPapers, and PsycINFO were searched up to 8 February 2026. Two reviewers independently screened, extracted, and synthesized data. Results Fourteen studies were included in this review. Evidence was synthesized at three levels including nursing staff, older adults, and the care system, and categorized into three domains: ethical challenges, ethical impacts, and improvement strategies. Ethical challenges mainly arise from three aspects: role ambiguity and competence limitations among nursing staff under contextual constraints, restrictions on older adults’ autonomy and opportunities to participate in decision-making, and structural conditions related to resource allocation and governance mechanisms. These ethical issues manifested as increased moral distress and emotional strain among nurses, diminished trust in nurses and reduced care adherence among older adults, and systemic pressures on the quality, equity, and sustainability of community nursing services. To address these challenges, the literature proposed strategies including strengthening ethics education and reflective practice, promoting supportive communication and shared decision-making, and improving governance structures and resource support. Conclusions Ethical issues in community nursing for older adults demonstrate multilevel characteristics embedded within practice contexts and institutional conditions. Strengthening ethical competence, promoting supportive communication and participatory decision-making, and advancing institutionalized ethical governance are essential for fostering more equitable and sustainable community nursing practice. Future research should expand geographical representation and further strengthen the evidence base for ethical governance in community nursing through high-quality empirical studies. (shrink)

Objective: The COVID-19 epidemic has generated great stress throughout healthcare workers. The situation of HCWs should be fully and timely understood. The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic on health care workers.Method: We searched the original literatures published from 1 Nov 2019 to 20 Sep 2020 in electronic databases of PUBMED, EMBASE and WEB OF SCIENCE. Forty-seven studies were included in the meta-analysis with a combined total of 81,277 participants.Results: The pooled prevalence of (...) anxiety is 37% from 44 studies. Depression is estimated in 39 studies, and the pooled prevalence of depression is 36%. There are 10 studies reported the prevalence of insomnia, and the overall prevalence of insomnia is 32%. The subgroup analysis showed a higher incidence of anxiety and depression among women and the frontline HCWs compared to men and non-frontline HCWs respectively.Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused heavy psychological impact among healthcare professionals especially women and frontline workers. Timely psychological counseling and intervention ought to be implemented for HCWs in order to alleviate their anxiety and improve their general mental health. (shrink)

Background Technology, such as alert systems, can foster community engagement in locating missing persons with dementia and minimize potential harm. However, concerns arise about implications of public disclosure of missing individual’s personal information (such as age, photographs, physical descriptions, and medical conditions) within alert systems. Until now, there has been no review of these concerns, particularly in the Canadian context. Our study aimed to explore community members’ perspectives on the ethical and legal concerns associated with the release of personal information (...) in alert systems for missing persons with dementia. Methods Using a qualitative descriptive approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 participants: people living with dementia, care partners, service providers, first responders, and experts in ethics, policy, and the law from Canada and the United Kingdom. We conducted a thematic analysis of the interview data to inductively explore ethical and legal concerns. Results Our findings identified the following concerns: Balancing safety and privacy, stigmatization, risk of victimization and abuse, and informed consent. There is a challenge of balancing safety with privacy due to the urgency of locating missing persons when sharing personal information publicly. Disclosure of personal information, such as cognitive impairment, can increase the risk of stigmatization, victimization, and abuse for both the missing individuals and their care partners. Unfortunately, conversations about alert systems and consent do not typically occur before someone goes missing, even though people living with dementia have the right to participate in these conversations. Conclusions Alert systems can promote community involvement in locating missing persons with dementia but must balance safety and privacy concerns. Implementation of education and policies would mitigate stigmatization, victimization, and abuse. Early conversations with people living with dementia and their care partners to understand their preferences, along with an advance consent process, can help address consent concerns. Our framework, which emphasizes ethical and legal considerations, can guide policy, practice, and decision-making to support the autonomy of people living with dementia. Background Cultural competence is considered as one of the main skills of nurses enabling them to provide nursing care for those with different cultures. One of the cases related to nurses’ cultural competence is observance of ethical codes, but it has not been investigated sufficiently in studies. Aim This study has been conducted to determine the relationship between nurses’ cultural competence and observance of ethical codes in practice. Research design This descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 2020. Sampling was done at (...) several stages. The data were collected using questionnaires of demographic information, cultural competence, and observance of ethical codes as self-report. The questionnaires were provided to the subjects by the corresponding researcher and the data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test. Participants and research context This study was done with participation of 267 nurses working in four training hospitals located in northwestern Iran and 16 head nurses of selected wards. Ethical considerations The study was approved by Human Ethics Committee of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. Participation was voluntary. Consent was obtained and confidentiality kept. Findings The results of Pearson correlation coefficient test showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between cultural competence and observance of ethical codes (r = 0.524, p = 0.001). In addition, cultural competence and observance of ethical codes by most nurses were at a moderate level. Conclusions The results of the present study showed a significant relationship between nurses’ cultural competence and observance of ethical codes. Therefore, it can be concluded that by strengthening the level of nurses, the level of observing ethical codes by them can be increased. Cultural competency and observance of ethical codes are important components of nursing care, and their development can improve nursing care delivery to clients through academic training, hidden curriculum and in-service education. In a fiercely competitive business landscape, the optimization of supply chain management (SCM) strategies and the integration of robust corporate digital competencies stand as pivotal determinants for sustained success across various industries, including the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. The study investigates the dynamic interplay between SCM strategies, corporate digital competencies, and operational performance. Through a hypothesis testing research design, the examination sought to determine the influence of these variables. The study revealed strong support for the hypothesis that SCM strategies (...) significantly impact corporate digital competencies and, in turn, operational performance. The results indicated a direct positive relationship between SCM strategies and operational performance while corporate digital competencies indirectly influenced operational performance through their mediation between SCM strategies and operational effectiveness. The findings underscored the integral role of corporate digital competencies in enhancing the efficacy of SCM strategies, amplifying operational performance, and driving customer-centric value. These implications stress the imperative for businesses to strategically align their SCM processes with digital competencies to effectively navigate market complexities and ensure long-term competitiveness. How would feminist concerns fare in the debate between Confucian role ethics and virtue ethics? By reimagining the virtues of chastity and filiality that are indispensable to Confucian contexts, Pang-White seeks to develop a reading that can be useful in defending feminist values and replacing outdated understandings of gender roles in societies informed by Confucian (...) thought today. This study examines the influence of environmental values on consumer intentions to participate in agritourism through the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and value-belief-norm (VBN) theory. It proposes an integrative model by adding two variables, i.e., environmental benefits and the human-nature coordination concept, to the TPB. The study employs a questionnaire survey method and a sample of 640, which was statistically analysed through structural equation modeling (SEM). The results reveal that the “environmental values-attitudes-behavioural intentions” framework has scientific applicability in agritourism. (...) Environmental values, measured through the variables environmental benefits and the human-nature coordination concept, are positively correlated directly or indirectly with agritourism consumption intentions, while attitudes and subjective norms serve as mediators. However, the mediating effect of perceived behavioural control is not statistically significant, indicating making efforts to influence attitudes and subjective norms is more useful for and effective in stimulating the public’s intentions towards agritourism. As this study tests the hypotheses with empirical data, it provides practical implications for policy-makers and programme managers. (shrink)

The construal of the self is related to individuals' cognition, emotion and behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate shame in the context of interdependent-self and independent-self culture. 163 Chinese and 196 American college undergraduates completed a questionnaire about their reaction to 3 different scenarios about shameful events involving 5 different persons including self, mother, boy/girl friend, best friend and classmate. The participants reported the intensity of shame they felt in each of the situation and how close they (...) were related to other people in the scenarios. The results demonstrated that there is a significant difference between Chinese and American participants on the levels of shame across all the scenarios, as well as for the persons involved in the scenario. It was also found that the intensity of shame was reduced as the relationship between the participants and the persons involved in the shameful events becomes remote in social distance. A significant correlation was found between closeness of relationship and intensity of shame felt. Implications for understanding cultural differences to emotions and future studies are discussed. Concurrent working memory task reduces available attentional control resources to perform the flanker task. However, controversy exists as to whether concurrent WM task increases or decreases flanker-related N2 amplitude. In a flanker task experiment, individuals were confronted with a low, middle, or high WM load task, while electroencephalography data were recorded. The ERP results showed a larger flanker-related N2 amplitude while completing a middle or high WM load task compared to a low one. However, completing an additional high WM load (...) task could not increase flanker-related N2 amplitude versus completing an additional middle WM load task. In sum, these results suggest that WM load can impair top-down cognitive control processes, thereby hampering flanker task performance. Importantly, the present study supports the account of flanker-related N2 processes linked to top-down attentional control resource allocation, but challenges the account of flanker-related N2 reflecting response conflict processes. A qualitative study was conducted with 48 Chinese counselors and psychotherapists who were interviewed in 2006 and an independent sample of 50 participants who responded to a survey in 2014. This study aims to explore how the new emerging expansion of mental health practice is related to issues and challenges of dual role relationship and how the well-engrained values and social characteristics of Chinese culture influences perceptions and resolution of ethical dilemmas. The participants identified similar dual relationships in 2006 and (...) 2014: Incidental boundary crossings, a sexual or romantic relationship, a dual social relationship, and a professional dual relationship were the most frequently reported types of dual relationships encountered by Chinese practitioners, and the socioeconomic and cultural context and the development trajectory of counseling and psychotherapy in China play a significant role in shaping practitioners’ behaviors. The comparison of the data in 2006 and 2014 indicated that practitioners in psychotherapy and counseling have an improved awareness and understanding of ethical issues, evidenced by the decreasing cases of romantic and sexual relationships and increasing cases of social dual relationships influenced by the interrelatedness of traditional Chinese culture. Based on European National Transfer Accounts data from 2010, this paper quantifies and evaluates the balance of intergenerational transfer flows in 16 EU countries, including transfers in the form of unpaid household work. On average, the value of net transfers received by a child amounts to sixteen times the labour income of a full-time worker, and the net transfers received by an elderly person to six times the labour income of a full-time worker. Intergenerational transfers can be regarded as the (...) reciprocal exchange between two generations: the size of the transfers to the child generation determines their potential to generate income and finance public transfers to the elderly population once they enter employment. We develop and calculate an indicator to analyse if there is a balance between transfers to children and transfers expected by the elderly population. The results indicate that in most of the analysed countries the human capital investments in children are far too low to finance the generous transfers to the elderly population in the future. Previous studies have shown that smiling, fairness, intention and the results being openness to the proposer can influence the responses in ultimatum games respectively. But it is not clear that how the four factors might interact with each other in twos or in threes or in fours. This study examined the way that how the four factors work in resource distribution games by testing the differences between average rejection rates in different treatments. Two hundred and twenty healthy volunteers participated in (...) an intentional version of the ultimatum game(UG). The experiment used a 2×2×2×2 mixed design with "openness" as a between subjects factor and the other three as within subjects factors, and the participants were assigned as recipients. The results revealed that fairness or perceived good intention reduced the subject's average rejection rates. There was a significant interaction between facial expressions and openness. With fair offers, the average rejection rate for informed was lower than that of uninformed; but when unfair, no difference between the corresponding average rejection rates was found. The interaction effect of smiling and openness was also significant, the average rejection rate for informed offers was lower when the proposer was smiling and no rejection rate difference between uninformed offers and informed offers when no smiling.
