The specialist field of intellectual disability nursing has been subjected to a number of changes since the move towards deinstitutionalisation from the 1970s. Government policies sought to change the nature of the disability workforce from what was labelled as a medicalised approach, towards a more socially oriented model of support. Decades on however, many nurses who specialise in the care of people with intellectual disability are still employed. In Australia, the advent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme offers an apt (...) moment to reflect upon these decades of specialised nursing care as the context of this nursing care will continue to evolve. A review of the published literature was conducted to explore what has shaped the field in the past and how this might inform the future of this speciality area under new policy and service contexts. People with intellectual disability have specific health and support needs that require a specialised workforce. Specialist nurses continue to be needed for people with intellectual disability. Consciousness science has generated diverse theoretical frameworks, each offering insights into different aspects of conscious experience. However, this diversity has created a fractured landscape: theories operate at different explanatory levels, and a principled account of how conscious phenomena arise from specific neural computations remains largely absent. This work argues that State Space Theory (SST) can serve as a unifying mechanistic framework for consciousness science. SST proposes that consciousness arises from hierarchical delay coordinate embedding (DCE) - the reconstruction of dynamical system (...) structure from time-delayed signals - implemented through recurrent cortical circuits ('DCE engines'), with gain modulation determining which reconstructions achieve system-wide influence. SST identifies these dynamics with consciousness itself, not merely as correlates. We draw on recent empirical and theoretical work to demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal, including empirical demonstrations that recurrent networks learn via embedding and mathematical results linking recurrent dynamics to embedding theory. We identify how major cognitive theories map onto this architecture mechanistically: parallel DCE engines correspond to Dennett's competing "drafts," global broadcasting reflects gain-amplified propagation, recurrent processing enables the temporal integration DCE requires, and the attention schema emerges as a higher-order reconstruction of gain modulation dynamics. SST's fundamentally process-based character provides immunity to the unfolding argument and resolves the temporal paradox facing causal structure theories. The framework generates a number of falsifiable predictions related to topological structure of perceptual dynamics, temporal vulnerability windows, and selective disruption of recurrent timing. SST thus offers a computational foundation for consciousness research that grounds existing theories mechanistically while generating empirical commitments. (shrink)

Neural population activity in sensory cortex is organized on low-dimensional manifolds, but it is unclear why such manifolds should arise and what determines their geometry. We address this "sensory representation problem" by modeling cortical populations as recurrent circuits driven by low-dimensional, regular sensory dynamics (e.g., motion on a circle, head direction, multi-frequency tones on tori). By combining tools from generalized synchronization and delay-embedding theory, specialized to this quasiperiodic regime, we show that contracting recurrent networks generically develop smooth internal manifolds that (...) embed the sensory dynamics. The dimensional requirement is modest and depends only on the intrinsic dimension d of the effective sensory manifold, not on the complexity of the external world: a hidden dimension N > 2d generically suffices (e.g., N ≥ 3 for a circle, N ≥ 5 for a two-frequency torus; bounds compatible with Whitney and Takens' embedding theorems). -/- We then prove a prediction-separation result that links representational geometry directly to predictive performance, without assuming knowledge of contraction rates: if the circuit can predict future sensory inputs with small error, then states with different futures must be separated in neural state space, up to a resolution set by the prediction error. The resulting scale-limited embeddings naturally give rise to categorical boundaries, metameric equivalence of distinct stimuli, and discrimination thresholds. -/- Numerical experiments with trained tanh recurrent networks driven by head-direction-like and multi-frequency signals recover ring- and torus-shaped hidden manifolds with the expected topology; state separation improves most rapidly near the 2d + 1 threshold. Training typically pushes the networks beyond the strict contraction regime where the theory guarantees faithful embedding, yet convergence consistent with generalized synchronization and manifold recovery persist, indicating that our conditions are sufficient but not necessary. -/- Together, these results provide a mechanistic account of why low-dimensional sensory manifolds emerge in recurrent circuits and how prediction constrains their resolution, grounded in dynamical systems embedding theory and consistent with empirical findings on cortical population dynamics. The unfolding argument in the neuroscience of consciousness posits that causal structure cannot account for consciousness because any recurrent neural network (RNN) can be “unfolded” into a functionally equivalent feedforward neural network (FNN) with identical input-output behavior. Subsequent debate has focused on dynamical properties and philosophy of science critiques. We examine a novel caveat to the unfolding argument for RNN systems with rapid plasticity in their connection weights. We demonstrate through rigorous mathematical proofs that plasticity negates the functional equivalence between (...) RNN and FNN. Our proofs address history-dependent plasticity, dynamical systems analysis, information-theoretic considerations, perturbational stability, complexity growth, and resource limitations. We demonstrate that neuronal systems that possess properties such as plasticity, history-dependence, and complex temporal information encoding have features that cannot be captured by a static FNN. Our findings delineate limitations of the unfolding argument that apply if consciousness arises from temporally extended dynamic neural processes rather than static input-output mappings. This work has implications for theories of consciousness, and for the fields of computational neuroscience and philosophy of mind more generally, providing new constraints for theories of consciousness. Searle's response to the Systems Reply, the internalization argument, and contemporary unfolding-based objections to AI consciousness share a premise that neither literature has made explicit: that the computationally relevant organization of a temporally extended process can be preserved under static re-specification. I call this the re-realizability premise and show that internalizability, static-rulebook re-realizability, and unfoldability coincide under the strong reading of internalization relevant here. The premise holds for any system whose transition law is time-invariant. It fails for systems whose transition (...) law is modified by their own processing history: systems with plasticity. A formal result establishes that no single static architecture maintains temporal functional equivalence with a plastic recurrent network whose learning rule produces non-trivial changes in the implemented function. The augmented-state representation of such systems provides stepwise simulation but not re-realization: the weight parameters play a constitutive role in the original system and a bookkeeping role in the simulation, a distinction visible under intervention. A second, independent obstruction arises from open-ended interaction, which resists finite feedforward surrogacy for structural rather than parametric reasons. These results motivate a four-level taxonomy of computational architectures organized by transition-law stationarity and endogenous constitutive modification. The taxonomy is applied to three positions in the current AI consciousness debate: Hoel's proximity argument is reinterpreted, Cerullo's internal-consistency critique is given positive theoretical content, and Buonomano's continuous-time argument is shown to address a structural dimension independent of plasticity. For agentic systems coupling frozen models with dynamic environments, the re-realizability question is genuinely open and boundary-sensitive. The framework does not establish that any AI system is conscious; it identifies which architectural properties determine whether a major class of arguments against computational consciousness is even applicable. The free energy principle casts perception as variational inference, but its biological implementation remains underspecified. In particular, the generalized-coordinate formalism should not be read as a literal claim that neurons compute arbitrary Taylor expansions. This paper argues that generalized synchronization provides the missing bottom-up mechanism. A contractive recurrent circuit driven by structured sensory input can synchronize to the driving dynamics. Under generic embedding conditions developed in the reservoir-computing literature, the resulting synchronization map can embed the low-dimensional sensory manifold into neural (...) state space. Thus, the geometry predicted by the free energy principle need not be imposed from above by an explicitly Bayesian neural calculus; it can arise from ordinary recurrent dynamics driven by the world. I then propose a developmental extension. Hebbian plasticity acting on the correlations generated by sensory-driven synchronization may crystallize the embedded manifold into recurrent connectivity, yielding an autonomous continuous attractor network when the required fixed point exists. On this view, mature head-direction, grid-cell, and stimulus-driven visual manifolds are not genetically prespecified templates, but developmental products of three interacting processes: dynamical contraction, generalized synchronization, and correlation-based plasticity. The synthesis links the free energy principle, reservoir-computing embedding theorems, and contraction-theoretic models of Hebbian recurrent networks. It also yields testable predictions about dimensional thresholds for topological recovery, developmental sensitivity to plasticity, and the dependence of attractor geometry on input statistics. The central open problem is whether the Hebbian fixed point exists and preserves the embedding quality of the synchronization manifold. (shrink)

Contemporary theories of consciousness often treat experience as a state, property, or representational structure instantiated at a time. This paper argues that this shared assumption underlies persistent explanatory problems, including the Hard Problem, the explanatory gap, and functionalist equivalence objections such as the unfolding argument. It proposes instead Computational Dynamic Monism (CDM), a process-metaphysical framework according to which phenomenal consciousness is constituted by temporally extended, hierarchically self-referential delay coordinate embedding (DCE) in plastic recurrent neural networks. The experiential and the dynamical (...) are not two things requiring a bridge, but one thing accessed via different epistemic routes. CDM departs from standard type-B physicalism by reconceiving consciousness as a process rather than a property: a reconception that dissolves the Hard Problem by denying the separation between process and phenomenal character that the snapshot view presupposes. The paper defends CDM against the explanatory gap objection, the conceivability argument, and the knowledge argument; establishes through converging arguments that consciousness requires temporal extension; and shows how CDM survives the unfolding argument that threatens static structural theories. The threshold problem - which processes are conscious - is addressed through a self-reference criterion for subjectivity. Building on the State Space Theory of Consciousness, the account integrates insights from dynamical systems theory, neuroscience, and process philosophy. It distinguishes the metaphysical framework (CDM) from the specific mechanism (DCE), and yields principled constraints on artificial systems capable of conscious experience. (shrink)

This paper introduces the state space theory of consciousness, positing that the cortex processes information through delay coordinate embedding operationalized by recurrent neural network engines. This leverages the power of Takens' theorem, giving rise to representations of reality as points within state space. Consciousness is posited to arise at the highest order engines amongst hierarchical and parallel engine pathways. Consciousness is cast as a dynamic process rather than as a neuronal state, reconciling dualist intuitions with a monist perspective. Neuronal representations (...) develop uniquely in each individual due to history-dependent training of these engines, accounting for the privacy of qualia while also addressing cortical plasticity and the heuristic nature of cortical processing. Posited engines exhibit non-linear dynamics that are sensitive to initial conditions, explaining phenomena such as ambiguous figure interpretation and offering a pathway to explaining free will. The state space theory aligns with and expands upon major theories (e.g.higher-order theories, global workspace theories, integrated information theory), essentially providing a computational mechanism that unifies elements of these theories. Temporal structure contains geometric structure. When a recurrent neural network is driven by structured sensory input, delay coordinate embedding theory shows that its internal state develops a geometry preserving the relational organization of the environment it tracks. The mechanism mathematically specifies not only where this geometry is faithful but where it must distort. Prediction error and environmental separability together set a resolution floor that maps onto metamers, categorical perception, and discrimination thresholds. This paper develops DCE as a candidate computational mechanism (...) for structuralist quality spaces, addressing exploitation criteria, Shea's misrepresentation requirement, and Kleiner and Hoel's lenient dependency. The results are conditional on an empirical hypothesis about cortical implementation; nine failure-mode predictions test both the hypothesis and the structuralist implications simultaneously. The implications for the Newman problem and for process ontology are developed. The invariance condition that generates the geometry is identical to the equation that defines the system's predictive function; this raises questions about the separation of structure from function presupposed by both structuralist and functionalist programs. This volume of essays retrieves the largely unresearched thought and the original ideas of ancient women philosophers and carves out a space for them in the canon. The broad focus includes women thinkers in ancient Indian, Chinese, and Arabic philosophy as well as in the Greek and Roman philosophical traditions.

The book argues that the category of mother is distinct from the category of woman and that many of the problems mothers face-socially, economically, politically, culturally, and psychologically-are specific to women's work and identity as mothers. Indeed, mothers, arguably more so than women in general, remain disempowered despite forty years of feminism. Mothers, thus, need a feminism of their own, one that positions mothers' concerns as the starting point for a theory and politic of empowerment. O'Reilly terms this new (...) mode of feminism matricentic feminism and the book explores how it is represented and experienced in theory, activism, and practice. The chapter on maternal theory examines the central theoretical concepts of maternal scholarship to include Adrienne Rich's distinction between mothering and motherhood, Sara Ruddick's model of maternal thinking and practice and Patricia Hill Collins' concept of othermothering while the chapter on activism considers the 21st century motherhood movement. Feminist mothering is likewise examined as the specific practice of matricentric feminism and this chapter discusses varies theories and strategies on and for maternal empowerment. Matricentric feminism is also examined in relation to the larger field of Feminist Theory and Women's Studies; here O'Reilly persuasively shows how matricentric feminism has been marginalized in feminist scholarship and considers the reasons for such exclusion and how such may be challenged and changed. We propose the Chaos-State Space Dream Model (CSSDM): a candidate neural correlate of dream consciousness. CSSDM treats dreaming as the brain's exploration of hierarchically organized attractor landscapes when sensory anchoring lifts and prefrontal control attenuates during REM sleep. The proposal combines two published frameworks. From chaos-theoretic accounts of dream phenomenology, we take the observation that dreams have dynamical structure: attractor-like coherence, bifurcation-like transitions, sensitivity to subtle influence. From an embedding-theoretic account of consciousness, we take a candidate substrate: delay coordinate embedding (...) via generalized synchronization in recurrent cortical networks. The synthesis maps dream phenomenology to specific dynamical properties: narrative coherence to attractor occupation, scene transitions to bifurcations, emotional intensity to limbic modulation of control parameters, bizarreness to access to normally inaccessible state-space regions, immersion to attenuated metacognition. Three predictions follow. First, bifurcation signatures in EEG should precede reported scene transitions. Second, cross-regional REM coherence should predict post-sleep insight. Third, nightmare episodes should show attractor entrapment signatures that normalize with successful therapy. The model generates falsifiable predictions about the neural dynamics of dreaming. To assess whether basic income (BI) can address the multiple causes of gender inequalities the author reviews debates about choices of care and the concept of dependency. She evaluates complementary policies that encourage a combination of care and employment. It is not empirically clear what type of gender equality BI would result in, and whether advocates are expecting too much from one policy tool.

A common reading of the Cyrenaics is that they are a school of extreme hedonist presentists, recognising only the pleasure of the present moment, and advising against turning our attention to past or future pleasure or pain. Yet they have some strange advice which tells followers to anticipate future harms in order to lessen the unexpectedness of them when they occur. It’s a puzzle, then, how they can consistently hold the attitude they do to our concern with our present selves, (...) and yet endorse the practise of dwelling on possible future painful scenarios. To establish that this is a puzzle, though, we must first be convinced that the report is true. Cicero is our only clear source for the Cyrenaic advice, and scholars have noted reasons to be suspicious of the reliability of his report. I discuss these doubts, and why they ultimately fail to undermine Cicero’s testimony as a source. Defending Cicero as a source for Cyrenaic thought removes a barrier to taking seriously an aspect of Cyrenaic psychology which could radically alter our understanding of their views. (shrink)

Using video to facilitate data collection has become increasingly common in health research. Using video in research, however, does raise additional ethical concerns. In this paper we utilize family therapy data to provide empirical evidence of how recording equipment is treated. We show that families made a distinction between what was observed through the video by the reflecting team and what was being recorded onto videotape. We show that all parties actively negotiated what should and should not go ‘on the (...) record’, with particular attention to sensitive topics and the responsibility of the therapist. Our findings have important implications for both clinical professionals and researchers using video data. We maintain that informed consent should be an ongoing process and with this in mind we present some arguments pertaining to the current debates in this field of health-care practice. (shrink)

This instalment will give the background to my work and highlight some of the areas I will cover in later entries. In doing so I will reflect on how my own philosophical work informs and is informed by my work on the practical management of natural resources and community development. The process will, (...) I hope, take in issues around the practical application of philosophical thinking - mainly to the environment and development. This reflection takes place in the context of work that involves a high degree of exchange across cultures, mainly Vietnamese (Kinh and several ethnic minorities), Swedish and British.The questions and challenges raised in this instalment may (or may not) be resolved over the remaining phase of my work with MRDP during 200L In doing so I hope to provoke debate. Many of the issues raised within this programme are not unique but often occur within donor funded aid programmes in the natural resource and poverty alleviation arena. Ethical review of applications to conduct research projects continues to be a focus of scrutiny and controversy. We argue that attention to the actual practices of ethical review has the potential to inform debate. We explore how research ethics committees (RECs) establish their position and authority through the texts they use in their correspondence with applicants. Using a discursive analysis applied to 260 letters, we identify four positions of particular interest: RECs positioned as disinterested and responsible; as representing the interests (...) of potential participants; as facilitating ethically sound, high-quality research; and as engaged in dialogue. These positions are used strategically to deflect criticism or complaint. This analysis has implications for reducing contestation between researchers and RECs, suggesting that more dialogic rather than hierarchical approaches to positioning might be helpful. (shrink)

This instalment is a reworking of the paper I gave at the meeting in Oxford in 2002 to a very small audience who I thank heartily for their patience and comments. I tried there to muse upon some ideas precipitated by reading two books by Jeremy Waldron, a legal philosopher whose work I find succeeds in being interesting and accessible without sacrificing technical content. I first came across his work whilst working on my PhD and was fascinated by his approach (...) and learning — even when I did not understand or agree with him. In one paper he made a point that struck a very important chord with me in relation to questions of participation within development:Philosophers who talk about rights should pay much more attention than they do to the processes by which decisions are taken in a community under circumstances of disagreement. Theories of rights need to be complemented by theories of authority, whose function it is to determine how decisions are to be taken when the members of a community disagree about what decision is right.I would like to suggest that within the Development Industry it is not only philosophers who need to pay more attention to these issues, but also development professionals who work with issues of governance as well as participation at the grass roots. This is not an obvious linkage, I admit, but one which I hope thisdiary entry will make clear.I will try to show that acknowledging disagreement within the legislative and judicial fields might actually be a positive move. And, as Waldron also indicates, that there is something dynamic and positive about the participation of people in processes. I will examine some current thinking on participation in development projects and ask whether current practices may be hindering the 'freedom to disagree'. I conclude that the failure to address some aspects of development practice relating to power and the possibility of disagreement is an issue. I highlight some factors which inhibit participation and suggest they flow from failures to develop strategies that foster local participation in contexts where local people often lack the formal' knowledge they need if they are to negotiate successfully with what James C Scott has called 'institutional privilege.'. Since the appearance of his earliest works on the subject of the emotions, namely, his article “Emotions and Choice” in 1973 and his book The Passions in 1976, Robert C. Solomon has never ceased to develop the idea that we are in some significant sense and to some significant degree responsible for our emotions. His presentation of this thesis in these two works was, on his own admission, somewhat polemical and stood in need of considerable revision. This present volume, which (...) brings together twelve different articles, beginning with “Emotions and Choice” and concluding with two papers from the year 2001, allows those interested in emotion theory to follow in great detail the contours of the development of the thought of one of the most important figures working in this field. This chapter examines the romanitas of the Codex Amiatinus. It suggests that the choice of uncial script in Northumbria in the 660s and 670s was a political act and that the association of uncial script with Rome and the papal mission acted as a challenge to insular liturgical gospel-book traditions in Northumbria. The chapter analyses the romanitas of Wearmouth-Jarrow, assuming that Bishop Wilfrid's romanitas aimed to demonstrate to the Northumbrians the superiority of Rome over Iona and of St. Peter over (...) This article examines discourse practices surrounding children’s participation, non-participation, and the ‘moral order’ of the family in the setting of family therapy consultations. The analysis focuses on two central issues. First, the relationship between therapists’ questions, the speaker selection techniques built into those questions, and the responses produced by family members. Second, the relationship between turn-taking and the linguistic features of person deixis in disputes that emerge around children’s orientation to implicit accusations in the talk of other participants about them. (...) The findings reveal how a familial ‘moral order’ is often at the root of how children’s competence as participants is managed by the parents, the therapist, and the children themselves. La monografía aborda en tres capítulos y con una buena base historiográfica el arduo problema de la duda y la opinión en el debate en torno de la conciencia moral, que ocupa gran parte de la reflexión teológico-moral de los siglos XVI y XVII. Como es sabido, la renovación en la reflexión escolástica que se genera en la Universidad de Salamanca durante el Siglo de Oro español resulta mejor comprendida a la luz de los textos de Tomás de Aquino, un (...) referente obligado para la Escuela. En efecto, buena parte de las obras de la Segunda Escolástica, al tiempo que introducen importantes matices y novedades, en su gestación original no pretendieron ser más que rigurosas exposiciones, aclaraciones y comentarios a la extensa obra del Aquinate. Se produce de este modo un progreso en la tradición de mutua retroalimentación pues, al tiempo que el estudio de las obras del Aquinate genera nuevos contenidos, las cuestiones planteadas por estos autores obligan a volver a las fuentes y analizar con mayor rigor los textos de Santo Tomás. 'Take care of the means and the ends will take care of themselves'By the time you are reading this instalment I will have been in my new position as Team Leader for a Community Conservation Project for more than one year. Why I left my previous position will perhaps become clear in this instalment. I may be unsuited to working in institutions that in theory value knowledge and analysis, but in practice become increasingly uncomfortable when the critical analysis is turned (...) inwards. I find I am not alone; witness the prominent case of the response of the World Bank to criticisms from their own former Chief Economist, the Nobel Economics laureate Joseph Stiglitz. His criticism of the International Financial Institutions after years of working with them could not be dismissed as the work of an uninformed outsider and were therefore treated with the disdain due to some one who had 'jumped ship'. This volume is a collection of 16 essays, old and new, relating history and exegesis in the writings of Bede and Adomnán, and in the lives of Thomas Becket. The first part consists of seven studies of Bede's writings, notably his biblical commentaries and his Ecclesiastical History. Two of the essays are published here for the first time. The five studies in the second part, devoted to Adomnán, discuss his life of Saint Columba (the Vita Columbae) and his guide to (...) the Holy Places (De locis sanctis). One essay ('The Bible as Map'), published posthumously, compares his presentation of a major theme, the earthly and heavenly Jerusalem, with the approach adopted by Bede. The third section consists of two essays on the lives of Thomas Becket that were composed shortly after his death. They examine, in the context of patristic exegesis, the biblical images invoked in the texts in order to show how the saint's biographers understood the complex relationship between hagiography and history. With the exception of the Jarrow Lecture on Bede and the essays on Becket, the studies in both parts were published originally in edited books, some of them now hard to come by. (shrink)
