The specialist field of intellectual disability nursing has been subjected to a number of changes since the move towards deinstitutionalisation from the 1970s. Government policies sought to change the nature of the disability workforce from what was labelled as a medicalised approach, towards a more socially oriented model of support. Decades on however, many nurses who specialise in the care of people with intellectual disability are still employed. In Australia, the advent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme offers an apt (...) moment to reflect upon these decades of specialised nursing care as the context of this nursing care will continue to evolve. A review of the published literature was conducted to explore what has shaped the field in the past and how this might inform the future of this speciality area under new policy and service contexts. People with intellectual disability have specific health and support needs that require a specialised workforce. Specialist nurses continue to be needed for people with intellectual disability. Jaques provides a general theory that gives a dynamic scientific foundation for the understanding of all living behavior.

According to some views, natural language suffers from underdeterminacy, but thought doesn’t. According to the underdeterminacy claim, sentence types underdetermine the truth-conditions of sentence tokens. In particular, the semantics of a predicate type seems to underdetermine the satisfaction conditions of its tokens. By contrast, mental representation-types are supposed to determine the truth-conditions of its tokens. In this paper I critically examine these mixed views. First, I argue that the arguments supporting the indispensability of including in one’s theory mental representations that (...) are free of the underdeterminacy exhibited by natural language are not sound. As a result, the possibility that mental representation-types are as underdetermined as natural language sentence-types has not been ruled out. Second, I argue that Carston’s ad hoc concept-types are as underdetermined as word-types. I finish by arguing that mental representations are also underdetermined in a second sense—mental representation-tokens only determine a partial function from possible worlds to truth-values. The first in a new series with Australian Catholic University, this collection of essays deals with two important themes. 'Faith' and 'reason' are heavily weighted words. They point to elemental aspects of human existence. The papers and discussions presented strive to clarify and corelate these basic activities or dimensions of human beings. Abnormalities in the ability of cells to properly degrade proteins have been identified in many neurodegenerative diseases. Recent work has implicated synaptojanin 1 (SynJ1) in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, although the role of this polyphosphoinositide phosphatase in protein degradation has not been thoroughly described. Here, we dissected in vivo the role of SynJ1 in endolysosomal trafficking in zebrafish cone photoreceptors using a SynJ1‐deficient zebrafish mutant, nrca14. We found that loss of SynJ1 leads to specific accumulation of late endosomes and (...) autophagosomes early in photoreceptor development. An analysis of autophagic flux revealed that autophagosomes accumulate because of a defect in maturation. In addition we found an increase in vesicles that are highly enriched for PI(3)P, but negative for an early endosome marker in nrca14 cones. A mutational analysis of SynJ1 enzymatic domains found that activity of the 5'phosphatase, but not the Sac1 domain, is required to rescue both aberrant late endosomes and autophagosomes. Finally, modulating activity of the PI(4,5)P2 regulator, Arf6, rescued the disrupted trafficking pathways in nrca14 cones. Our study describes a specific role for SynJ1 in autophagosomal and endosomal trafficking and provides evidence that PI(4,5)P2 participates in autophagy in a neuronal cell type. -/- . (shrink)

This paper argues against the indeterminacy thesis that attempts to defeat traditional natural law by asserting that specific moral norms cannot be based on human nature. As put by Jean Porter (Nature as Reason 2005, 338): “the intelligibilities of human nature underdetermine their forms of expression, and that is why this theory does not yield a comprehensive set of determinate moral norms, compelling to all rational persons.” However, if this were so, one could adopt any morality with impunity from nature’s (...) sanctions. But I argue that nature punishes violators of the natural law in various ways. In addition, I argue that the indeterminacy thesis cannot be supported by appealing to the diversity of moral norms across the globe. Such diversity is required, for instance, both by the reliance of Thomistic natural law on the practical syllogism and by its reliance on practical reason’s ability to prescribe for the sake of the person in highly unique situations as required by Wojtyla’s Personalistic Norm and Aquinas’s norm of neighborly love. PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this (...) book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing... (shrink)

El análisis se inscribe en el desarrollo del campo organológico bajo el giro material y explora las resonancias sónicas de los instrumentos de lengüeta libre (aerófonos) desde las intersecciones entre artefacto y máquina. La familia organológica acordeón-bandoneón es entendida como una infraestructura parlante –simultáneamente rural y urbanística– que interactúa con fronteras, tribus y geografías. El manuscrito aborda el bandoneón, específicamente el modelo Doble A, como artefacto afectivo y máquina de integridad estética. En el marco del nacional-cosmopolitismo (1955) es crucial el (...) nuevo orden sensitivo que emerge con la inflexión de Astor Piazzolla, y las posibilidades diagramáticas del bandoneón en las fusiones entre tango, jazz y música contemporánea. Nuestro enfoque mantiene relaciones parciales con la «arqueología medial», arquitectura argumental que implica dispositivos como cilindros, fonógrafos, gramófonos y bandoneones digitales, sin perder de vistas las ecologías del affordances. A pesar de las observaciones críticas hacia la ontogenética de Gilbert Simondon, abrazamos críticamente la tecnoestética. Finalmente, reconocemos la «ecología de objetos» y su resistencia al antropomorfismo (objetos), aunque esto se relaciona parcialmente con nuestros intereses. (shrink)

Rodolfo Mederos (1940) cultiva una potencia organológica que no es posible localizar en moldes rítmicos o narrativas técnicas. Quizá su artesanía es el silencio -sabio- de una corchea como cualidad de lo inaudible. En efecto, la disposición de los tímpanos, como artes de la escucha, interroga las percepciones categoriales y deviene una zona de disputas que permite el acontecimiento musical. Aunque sus huellas -no militantes- se ubican en la Tercera Generación (1955), sus travesías examinan invenciones y herencias vernáculas (lo popular, (...) la traidición) diluyendo el binarismo mundo-música. Las formas figurativas implican relaciones de des-enraizamientos entre sonoridades (Jazz, Rock y Bandoneón) en una trama no lineal entre tradición, modernidad y vanguardia. Flujos y fraseos que lesionan sutilmente la camaradería entre modernización e industria cultural. Mederos ha mantenido un vitalismo crítico con el tango abriendo lo plural-discordante, donde puede articular sonidos, cuerpos, fusiones, intercalando lo popular y lo contemporáneo, emplazando fronteras, jerarquías y cánones. Las exploraciones de su obra no se ubican bajo los signos de un tiempo trágico, sino en la fértil distopía de orquestas -Aníbal Troilo- y en las trazas oblicuas de Horacio Salgan, Osvaldo Pugliese y Astor Piazzolla. Aunque abraza el gesto de ruptura de Piazzolla, mantiene una singularidad crítica que no hace concesiones a las postales de la Piazzollización. La “plasticidad auditiva” y la potencia imaginal, recusa las estéticas de lo efímero y las actitudes turísticas de los centros de consumo. En su afán irrebasable por nuevas expresiones, la infidelidad (inmediatez del presente) solo tiene sentido si responde a una sustancia de creación. Desde agrupaciones como Generación Cero (1976) hasta Pulso (2023), hay una afinidad tonal genuina por las artes populares. A pesar de su sensibilidad contemporánea, revisita identidades, reivindica ontologías y cultiva modos de autenticidad. Mederos subraya una pedagogía crítica para un pueblo ausente. Quizás convenga un paréntesis. En 1919, T.S. Eliot escribió: “La tradición no es algo que se hereda, sino algo que se gana con esfuerzo; conlleva un sentido de la historia —es un sentido de la historia en el que lo temporal y lo que trasciende el tiempo se unen— y es lo que hace que un hombre sea [verdaderamente] tradicional”. En suma, este es un espacio posible para comprender a Mederos en la latencia de las tradiciones vivas. (shrink)

Presentación dossier «Piazzolla, pasados-futuros. Temporalidades sensitivas y plásticas populares».

The paper looks at the genealogical preface to an early nineteenth century Javanese historical text known as the Serat Sajarah Leluhur. The preface contains two genealogies for the central Javanese Sultans of Yogyakarta, one that contains figures from Muslim and biblical accounts of sacred descent from Adam, and a second that refers to Hindu cosmological entities. The paper argues that both genealogies were written by Muslim scholars but that the ‘Hindu’ section uses Hindu terminology because it represented the lingua franca (...) of religious language during the early Islamization of Java. The “Hindu” section thus charts the descent of God’s mystical knowledge from Adam through his ‘grandson’ Anwar and on through a chain of ‘descendants’ using figures from the Hindu purāṇa tradition as well as the Mahābhārata and the Javanese Wayang Kulit. The genealogy argues that the central Javanese Sultans of Yogyakarta are the recipients of God’s mystical knowledge, thereby investing them with spiritual authority and power that is designed to augment their political authority. This article roots Kant’s concept of disinterestedness, as he uses it in the Critique of Judgment, in Aristotle’s notion of philia by establishing a path from ethics to aesthetics and back. In this way, the third Critique turns out to be one of the main sources for a new ideal of humanity: the ideal suitable for late Enlightenment. This article argues that Kant reaches this fruitful use of disinterestedness by giving to Aristotle’s concept of philia an aesthetic turn.

This article furnishes a systematisation of the Mediaval aesthetic vocabulary. This task is developed by means of the adoption of a dynamic of intersection among the various Aristotelic species qualitatis, which are taken as the basic structural elements of the requested system. Two versions of beauty are established, which will expand into two kinds of aesthetics, one leaded by pulchritudo, with intellectualistic implications and the other leaded by formositas, which will turn into an autonomus aesthetics; both of them have let (...) a strong legacy to contemporaneus aesthetics. The paper brings existential temporality, as developed in the work of phenomenologists Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, and Husserl, into dialogue with historical materialism. What results is the development of a theoretical background for what the author terms futural materialism, which is taken to be a complimentary logical extension of historical materialist projects. To this end, it is suggested that the past and the future are best understood as materially existing in the present in an immanent way, mediated by conscious beings in the (...) form of memory, projection, residual effect, and affect. Put differently, the present's presence in the past and future play a determining roll in those temporal dimensions, which subsequently fold back into the configuration of the present. Following Nietzsche and drawing influence from Guattari and Deleuze, it is argued that past and future are relatively fluid tools to be purposively deployed in the present for particular purposes rather than being transcendent facts which subjectivity must merely contend with. It is further asserted that as part of a broader non-reductive material monist project of social transformation, both futural and historical materialism are necessary considerations. (shrink)

According to contextualists, communication has to do with pragmatically adjusted content, not with conventional meaning. This pragmatic content is sometimes identified with speaker meaning or with the thought the speaker intends to express. I will argue that given the sociolinguistic role of utterance content—the fact it provides reasons for action, liabilities and entitlements—locutionary content should not be modelled as a variety of speaker meaning.

English Title: "The Ineffability of Natural Language"Resumen: Los casos de variación en las condiciones de satisfacción de enunciados sin deícticos, junto con la asunción de un principio de proposicionalidad, han llevado a filósofos como Carston a defender la idea de que nuestros pensamientos son inefables, esto es, no codificables en lenguaje natural. En contra de este enfoque argumentaré (i) que esta teoría no se aplica al pensamiento consciente, (ii) que, contra el argumento de la desambiguación, el principio de proposicionalidad no (...) es obligatorio y (iii) que podemos explicar tanto los casos exitosos de comunicación como aquellos en los que es necesario que el hablante precise qué quería decir sin recurrir a pensamientos inefables. Abstract: Cases of variation in the satisfaction-conditions of non-indexical sen- tences, together with a principle of propositionality, have led some philosophers, as Carston, to defend the idea that our thoughts are ineffable, i.e., they cannot be articulated in natural language.
