This article makes an analysis of Mabel Shaw's understanding of African spirituality and Christian theology that emerged while she worked as a missionary teacher for the London Missionary Society in Northern Rhodesia. It argues that post-colonial writing on missionary activity has tended to emphasize the negative aspects of the missionary movement, the consequence of which has been a failure to recognize the achievement of women such as Shaw. The freedom that the London Board of the LMS gave to their field (...) workers allowed Shaw to create a Boarding School for girls at Mbereshi that won Shaw acclaim as an educational practitioner. An instinctive belief in natural theology combined with a strong sense of the presence of God in loving action was critical in forming and shaping the practical application of her faith. While professionally it is apparent that Shaw `hit the glass ceiling' with her being overlooked as a candidate to become Mission Station Head she provides an impressive example of a woman who challenged perceptions of theology and denominational allegiance. Her radical thought on issues surrounding Christian spirituality had implications for the Christian movement as it became an agent of change in Central Africa. (shrink)

Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Berlin. July 2017. Theatre designers conjure fictional worlds by creating floor plans for performers to inhabit in the rehearsal room. These plans are flat, phantom worlds that hold the possibility of habitation, suggesting fragments of objects, walls and architectures. They are often drawn out in spike tape on rehearsal room floors, ‘blocking’ the terrain of the stage, serving as a set-up of instructions to the bodies and objects that will eventually occupy the set. The plans exist between (...) the present and the future, a set of possibilities of ‘what might be’ but is yet to come. Theatre floor plans are paradoxical, they are theatrical because of their absences rather than their excesses and therefore hold a unique relationship with the possibilities of theatrical representation. Indikatoren sind in Prozessen des Monitorings in allen gesellschaftlich relevanten Bereichen sowie in Prozessen der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Entscheidungsfindung von der lokalen Ebene bis zur internationalen Governance unverzichtbar geworden. Überall in der öffentlichen und medialen Kommunikation begegnen sie uns und rechtfertigen die Wahl zwischen unterschiedlichen Optionen. Doch was zeigen uns diese Indikatoren eigentlich genau an, worin beruht ihre Relevanz, was sind ihre Stärken, was aber auch ihre prinzipiellen Grenzen? Kinder und Jugendliche haben ein Recht auf Beteiligung. Mit der Unterzeichnung der UN-Kinderrechtskonvention durch Deutschland ist u. a. die Kinder- und Jugendbeteiligung auf Bundes-, Landes- und kommunaler Ebene rechtlich verankert. Mit dem aktuellen Nationalen Aktionsplan für Kinder- und Jugendbeteiligung setzt auch die Bundesregierung die Beteiligung junger Menschen auf allen Ebenen als ein Schwertpunktthema und nimmt sie in den Fokus für gemeinsame Ressort- und Ebenen übergreifende Strategien und Maßnahmen. Doch was bedeutet die Umsetzung dieses Rechtes junger Menschen auf Beteiligung bei (...) der Betrachtung von kommunalen Diskussions- und Entscheidungsprozesse? Zunächst findet sich hierzu eine Fülle von Ansätzen in der Publizistik, deren Übersetzung für eine konkrete Anwendung aber mit der Schwierigkeit verbunden ist, diese im jeweiligen Beteiligungsfeld sortieren zu müssen. Die globale Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise wirft noch immer eine Reihe von grundlegenden Fragen auf. Dies beginnt schon bei der Analyse der Ursachen. Die Probleme des Krisenmanagements sind offensichtlich - allen voran die langfristigen Folgen ausufernder Staatsverschuldung. Aus Sicht der Entwicklungslander bleibt die Sorge, dass dies zu Lasten wichtiger Investitionen in Armutsbekampfung, Klimaschutz und andere zentrale Aufgaben nachhaltiger globaler Politik gehe. Der politische Wille, in globaler Abstimmung eine strukturelle Neuordnung der Finanzmarkte einzuleiten, ist inzwischen erlahmt, die Finanzinstitute sind uberwiegend zum (...) "Business as usual" zuruckgekehrt. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Handlungsoptionen fur eine stabile wie entwicklungsvertragliche und damit ethisch vertretbare globale Finanzordnung erortert. In Deutschland werden seit einiger Zeit zwei Diskurse parallel geführt. Der erste dreht sich um den Fach- und Arbeitskräftemangel, der derzeit mit zwei Millionen unbesetzten Stellen beziffert wird. Der zweite Diskurs stellt die Frage, ob uns künstliche Intelligenz (KI) den Arbeitsplatz kosten wird. Wenn wir die beiden Diskurse zusammenbringen, dann schauen wir in Deutschland und Ländern mit ähnlicher demografischer Entwicklung wie Japan in ein Window of Opportunity, das unsere letzte Rettung sein könnte, aber schon wieder im Begriff ist, sich zu (...) schließen. Es ist richtig, dass uns auf der einen Seite Fach- und Arbeitskräfte fehlen und ein nicht geringer Anteil der unterbesetzen Tätigkeiten dergestalt sind, dass sie mit Digitalisierung und KI (teil-)automatisierbar wären – vom Lokführer bis zum Sachbearbeiter. Gleichzeitig gibt es in fast allen Berufen auch noch Potenzial, Bürokratie und andere als belastend oder unnötig empfundene Tätigkeiten an Maschinen zu übertragen. (shrink)

The Moral Authority of Nature offers a wide-ranging account of how people have used nature to think about what counts as good, beautiful, just, or valuable. This is a teaching guide for my recent book "Unfinished Business. Rational Attitudes in Reasoning." (OUP 2025) I explain how to use the book as a basis for an epistemology class for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. I suggest readings that can be paired with each chapter to create a course that teaches both classic themes and texts in epistemology as well as current research topics.

Kant's moral philosophy is grounded on the dignity of humanity as its sole fundamental value, and involves the claim that human beings are to be regarded as the ultimate end of nature. It might be thought that a theory of this kind would be incapable of grounding any conception of our relation to other living things or to the natural world which would value nonhuman creatures or respect humanity's natural environment. This paper criticizes Kant's argumentative strategy for dealing with our (...) duties in regard to animals, but defends both his theory and most of his conclusions on these topics. (shrink)

This essay defends moral expertise against the skeptical considerations raised by Gilbert Ryle and others. The core of the essay articulates an account of moral expertise that draws on work on expertise in empirical moral psychology, and develops an analogy between moral expertise and linguistic expertise. The account holds that expertise is contrastive, so that a person is an expert relative to a particular contrast. Further, expertise is domain specific and characterized by “automatic” behavior and judgment. Some disagreements in the (...) literature regarding moral expertise are diagnosed as being due to failures to adequately distinguish different ways in which someone can be a moral expert. Julia Markovits develops a desire-based, internalist account of what normative reasons are--an account which is compatible with the idea that moral reasons can apply to all of us, regardless of our desires. She builds on Kant's formula of humanity to defend universal moral reasons, and addresses the age-old question of why we should be moral.

How should thinkers cope with uncertainty? Julia Staffel breaks new ground in the study of rationality by answering this question and many others. She also explains how it is better to be less irrational, because less irrational degrees of belief are generally more accurate and better at guiding our actions.

Virtue ethics has generated a great deal of excitement among ethicists largely because it is seen as an alternative to the traditional theories – utilitarianism and Kantian ethics – which have come under considerable scrutiny and criticism in the past 30 years. Rather than give up the enterprise of doing moral theory altogether, as some have suggested, others have opted to develop an alternative that would hopefully avoid the shortcomings of both utilitarianism and Kantian ethics. Julia Annas here offers a fundamental reexamination of Plato's ethical thought by investigating the Middle Platonist perspective, which emerged at the end of Plato's own school, the Academy. She highlights the differences between ancient and modern assumptions about Plato's ethics--and stresses the need to be more critical about our own. One of these modern assumptions is the notion that the dialogues record the development of Plato's thought. Annas shows how the Middle Platonists, by contrast, viewed the dialogues as multiple (...) presentations of a single Platonic ethical philosophy, differing in form and purpose but ultimately coherent. They also read Plato's ethics as consistently defending the view that virtue is sufficient for happiness, and see it as converging in its main points with the ethics of the Stoics. Annas goes on to explore the Platonic idea that humankind's final end is "becoming like God"--an idea that is well known among the ancients but virtually ignored in modern interpretations. She also maintains that modern interpretations, beginning in the nineteenth century, have placed undue emphasis on the Republic, and have treated it too much as a political work, whereas the ancients rightly saw it as a continuation of Plato's ethical writings. Julia Annas explores how Plato's account of the relation of virtue to law developed, and how his ideas were taken up by Cicero and by Philo of Alexandria. She shows that, rather than rejecting the account given in his Republic, Plato develops in the Laws a more careful and sophisticated version of that account.

The predominant view of moral virtue can be traced back to Aristotle. He believed that moral virtue must involve intellectual excellence. To have moral virtue one must have practical wisdom - the ability to deliberate well and to see what is morally relevant in a given context. Julia Driver challenges this classical theory of virtue, arguing that it fails to take into account virtues which do seem to involve ignorance or epistemic defect. Some 'virtues of ignorance' are counterexamples to (...) accounts of virtue which hold that moral virtue must involve practical wisdom. Modesty, for example, is generally considered to be a virtue even though the modest person may be making an inaccurate assessment of his or her accomplishments. Driver argues that we should abandon the highly intellectualist view of virtue and instead adopt a consequentialist perspective which holds that virtue is simply a character trait which systematically produces good consequences. If you can vote, you are morally obligated to do so. As political theorist Julia Maskivker argues, voting in order to improve our fellow citizens' lot is a duty of justice. It does not matter that individual votes may rarely tilt elections: the act of voting is a valuable contribution to a collective activity whose outcome is good governance, and we must do it in order to protect the rights and interests of our fellow citizens.

Some years ago I started to write a book on virtue ethics, in which I tried to meet early criticisms of what was then a new way of doing ethics. The book continued to be unsatisfactory, and I finally abandoned it, realizing that I needed to get clear about virtue before producing a defence of virtue ethics. This need should have been obvious, especially since I frequently teach Platonic dialogues where Socrates gets people to see that they are doing what (...) I was doing, namely developing ideas about something without first examining what it is. The need became even more obvious as the field rapidly expanded with the production of Humean, Nietschean, Kantian and consequentialist kinds of virtue ethics. Within the field of neo-Aristotelian ethics itself it became clear that different aspects can be stressed: the importance of practical wisdom can be developed, for example, without defending a naturalistic account of the relation of virtue to happiness.I finally wrote a book to explore and d.. In this book, Allen Wood investigates Kant's conception of ethical theory, using it to develop a viable approach to the rights and moral duties of human beings. By remaining closer to Kant's own view of the aims of ethics, Wood's understanding of Kantian ethics differs from the received 'constructivist' interpretation, especially on such matters as the ground and function of ethical principles, the nature of ethical reasoning and autonomy as the ground of ethics.
