This is the first part of a two-part article on semantic compositionality, that is, the principle that the meaning of a complex expression is determined by the meanings of its parts and the way they are put together. Here we provide a brief historical background, a formal framework for syntax and semantics, precise definitions, and a survey of variants of compositionality. Stronger and weaker forms are distinguished, as well as generalized forms that cover extra-linguistic context dependence as well as (...) linguistic context dependence. In the second article, we survey arguments for and arguments against the claim that natural languages are compositional, and consider some problem cases. It will be referred to as Part II. (shrink)

본 논문은 『수사학』 2권에 나타난 감정에 관한 정의(definition)가 가지는 역할과 양상에 관한 연구이다. 이러한 연구는 파토스적 설득의 실현 기반이 되는 감정의 인지성의 측면에서 진행되었다. 감정에 있어서의 인지주의는 감정을 감정으로 만드는 ‘본질적 요소가 무엇인가’라는 물음에 믿음(belief)이나 판단(judgement) 등의 사고적인 부분, 즉 인지적 요소로 답하는 것이다. 때문에 어떠한 사실에 대하여 가지게 되는 판단과 믿음이라는 사고의 영역은 느낌과 욕구보다 더 근본적이며, 판단과 믿음의 차이는 서로 다른 감정의 차이를 구별하는 기준이 된다. 아리스토텔레스는 『수사학』 2권에서 성격(ēthos), 감정(pathos), 논증(logos)을 통해 상대방을 설득하는 것을 목표로 연설 상황에서 (...) 일으켜야 할 감정들을 분석하고 있다. 그의 분석은 인지주의적 입장을 피력하는 것에 초점을 두지는 않았다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스의 감정에 대한 정의(definition) 부분은 그의 인지주의적 입장을 2가지 양상으로 분명히 드러내고 있다. 첫째는 원인 · 이유를 보여주는 양상이다. 아리스토텔레스는 감정에 대한 정의에서 각 감정들이 일어나는 ‘원인 · 이유’를 명시하거나 유추 가능하도록 서술함으로써 각 감정들의 인지적 요소를 상정하고 있다. 둘째는 감정을 개별화하는 양상이다. 아리스토텔레스의 정의는 감정의 ‘본질’을 규정함으로써 감정들 사이의 차이를 드러내고, 각 감정들을 개별화하게 된다. 결국 그의 정의는 감정의 인지성을 바탕으로 현대 연구자들이 문제시되는 감정의 본질을 검토하며, 각 감정들을 개별화하도록 하는 기초가 되었다. 결론적으로 감정에 대한 정의는 원인 · 이유를 보여주며, 감정을 개별화하는 2가지 양상으로 아리스토텔레스의 인지주의적 견해를 입증하고 있는 것이다. Kerridge et al recently published a paper in the journal about organ transplantation and the diagnosis of death.1 Although I appreciate the authors’ efforts to present their arguments about such a controversial issue, I found some inconsistencies in this article that I would like to discussWhen Kerridge and his collaborators discussed the origins of the concept of brain death, they emphasised that after the report of the medical consultants on the diagnosis of death to the US President’s Commission was published (...) in 1981,2 clinicians equated the concept of BD with brainstem death. In fact, the brainstem criterion was first proposed by Mohandas and Chou in Minnesota, in 1971.3 The Minnesota criteria inspired the UK code, which was mainly adopted in UK commonwealth countries.4 This view was afterwards powerfully defended by Christopher Pallis.5 After the US President’s Commission report,2 a lot of countries, and most US states, accepted the whole brain, and not the brainstem, criterion.6Regarding the “dead donor rule”, with the advent of transplant surgery, interest in definitions and diagnosis of death based on brain formulations really acquired a new urgency. None the less, it is important to point out that the concept of BD as death of the individual, did not appear to benefit organ transplantation, but was a consequence of the development of intensive care. As Pallis emphasised, if organ transplant techniques had never been developed, intensive care procedures would have provided the possibility of supplying life support to those cases with destroyed brains and preserved heart function, and physicians would need to face the clinical syndrome called BD.5 When French neurophysiologists and neurologists described the death of the nervous system and coma dépassé, organ transplant techniques were only in the very early stages of development. …. 이 논문은 이른바 놀이하는 존재Homo ludens로서의 인간에 대한 정의를 중심으로 인간을 이해하기 위한 의도로 기획한 글이다. 전통적인 관점에서 인간에 대한 정의는 이성적 존재Homo sapiens, 도구적 존재Homo faber 등으로 이해되어왔으나, 그러한 이해는 인간에 대한 특수적 관점만을 부각시키고 있기에 인간에 대한 전일적 이해에 걸림돌이 되어왔다. 이성적 존재로 인간을 이해하는 한 21세기에 비약적인 과학적 발전을 바탕으로 전개되고 있는 초인류 사회에서 인간에 대한 이해는 새로운 문제점에 봉착하게 된다. 이러한 논의를 유발 하라리의 『사피엔스』와 『호모데우스』에서의 주장에 근거해서 논의를 전개하였다. 한편, 인간에 대한 도구적 존재로서의 이해 방식 (...) 역시 인간이해에 있어서 단편적인 이해라는 난점을 지니고 있다. 신체의 확장으로서 도구의 제작과 사용이 인간을 정의하는데 있어서는 매우 유효할 것 같지만 인간의 문화를 이해하는 차원에서 한계를 드러낸다고 하겠다. 필자는 놀이하는 존재Homo ludens로서의 인간이야말로 인간을 이해하는데 매우 적절한 이해 방식이라고 본다. 이른바 피로사회로 정의되는 현대사회의 지평에서 인간의 이해방식을 통해 피로사회의 극복 방안을 모색하는 차원에서 이 글을 작성하였다. 본고의 목표는 『시학』의 비극 정의에서 정의항의 두 부분, 즉 ‘완결성’과 ‘감정 효과’에 초점을 맞춰, “극 바깥(exō tou dramatos)”이 이 둘과 직결되는 용어임을 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 본고는 다음의 순서를 취한다. 먼저 “극 바깥”이란 배우의 간략한 말을 통해 관객에게 전달될 뿐 현재형의 행동으로 연출되지는 않는 과거사나 미래사가 놓이는 곳으로서, 표현은 공간이지만 실제 의미는 시간에 관련됨을 서술한다. 다음으로, “묶기”란 주인공의 운의 전환에 필요한 사건들을 설계하는 작업인데, 여기서 비중 있게 사용되는 것은 극 안의 현재사보다는 극 바깥의 과거사임을 보인다. 마지막으로, 비극 정의에 언급된 ‘행위의 (...) 완결성’은 ‘극의 통일성’을 뜻함을 설명하고, 극이 통일성을 갖추게 하기 위해서는 ‘플롯의 통일성’부터 마련해야 함을 짚은 후, 다음을 보인다. 첫째, 극 바깥의 과거사는 극 안의 현재사가 일어날 만한 이유를 제공하여 사건들을 인과적으로 밀착시켜 주기 때문에 통일적 플롯 구성에 필요하고, 특히 알아보기가 포함된 플롯 제작에서는 그 적극적 사용이 필수적이다. 둘째, 극 바깥의 과거사는 관객에게 인과적 정보를 제공하긴 하지만 이 정보를 덜 생생하고 덜 상세하게 제공하여 관객 인지 상태의 명료한 정도를 낮추기 때문에, 극 안의 중대 사건의 예기치 않은 발생을 준비하는 데 효과적이고, 특정 과거사의 불합리한 요소가 관객의 의식에 포착되지 않도록 감추는 데에도 활용될 수 있다. 이상의 논의를 통해 본고는 “극 바깥”이 플롯의 통일성 마련에 필요하다는 점에서 ‘완결성’과 직결되고, 놀라움의 규모 확대에 기여한다는 점에서 ‘감정 효과’와 직결됨을 밝히고자 한다. 전기 비트겐슈타인의 『논고』에서 “논리적 분석”과 “지시적 정의”에 대해 어떤 점이 명확하지 않았는지를 확인하는 것은 중기 비트겐슈타인의 철학을 이해하는 관건이다. 더 나아가 우리는 지시적 정의와 관련된 『논고』의 생각과 중기 비트겐슈타인의 생각을 살펴봄으로써 왜 “언어놀이”라는 중기 및 후기 비트겐슈타인의 근본 개념이 등장할 수밖에 없었는지 그 실마리를 이해할 수 있다. 그리하여 나는 다음을 보이고자 한다. 『논고』 3.263의 “주해”는 명제이며 지시적 정의가 아니다. 『논고』에서 규칙에 상당하는 지시적 정의가 논의되고 있는 곳은 3.263이 아니라 3.262이다. 3.262에서는 “기호의 적용”과 “보여주기” 개념을 통해 한 대상과 이름의 내적 관계가 (...) 거론되고 있다. 이러한 논의 과정에서 우리는 “논리의 적용”이 무엇인지 해명할 수 있다. This book is concerned with the problem of applying the theory of verisimilitude to cognitive problems of a quantitative nature. Attention is mostly focused on hypotheses concerned with (physical or other) systems whose state can be represented with an element of a multidimensional state space, but hypotheses concerned with quantitative laws are also considered. The book provides a systematic introduction to the main contemporary forms of the theory of verisimilitude, including both proposed definitions of quantitative degrees of verisimilitude and (...) proposed definitions of the relation `closer to the truth than'. It shows why the quantitative measures that have been proposed earlier produce unacceptable results in the multidimensional case and, using the tools of geometric measure theory, works out alternatives for them in detail. In addition, the standard structuralist theory of science and the way in which the problems of approximation are dealt with in it are presented and evaluated critically. (shrink)

예술 제도론은 관계적 속성에 의해 예술을 정의하는 시도이다. 그러나 이런 시도가 잘못이라는 주장이 있다. 이 주장은 관계적 정의가 예술의 본질을 밝히지 못한다는 것이다. 이 주장은 크게 두 가지 측면에서 관계적 정의의 문제점을 제시한다. 우선 관계적 정의는 기껏해야 예술에 대한 외연을 밝혀줄 뿐이며, 그것의 내포를 구체적으로 밝히지 못한다는 것이다. 다음으로 관계적 정의는 가족 유사성 이론이 의뢰하고 있는 유사성의 패턴들을 설명하지 못한다는 것이다. 그러나 예술에 대한 관계적 정의가 잘못되었다는 지적이 오히려 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서 필자는 관계적 정의가 잘못이라고 지적하는 네일(Alex Neil)과 리들리(Aaron (...) Ridley)에게 어떤 문제가 있는지 살펴보려고 한다. 나아가 관계적 정의는 유사성에 호소하는 견해 보다 더 유망하다는 점을 제안하려고 한다.BR 본 논문의 1절에서는 관계적 속성에 의해 예술을 정의하는 시도가 등장하는 배경에 대해 간략히 살펴볼 것이다. 2절에서는 네일과 리들리가 지적하는 관계적 정의의 문제점에 대해 알아 볼 것이다. 그리고 그들의 지적에 오히려 문제가 있다는 점을 논증한다. 3절에서는 유사성 이론 중 하나인 클러스터 설명을 살펴보고, 그것이 어떤 문제를 가지고 있는지 살펴볼 것이다. 그래서 2절에서 논의한 네일과 리들리의 비판에 어떤 오류가 있는지 좀 더 상세하게 검토할 것이다. 그리하여 관계적 정의가 유사성 이론보다 더 유망하다는 것을 보여줄 것이다. The author examines the fanatical type of mentality in its secular and religious forms based on the analysis of the works of Gabriel Marcel and Karen Armstrong. The origins of the phenomenon of fanaticism are found in the basic foundations of Modern culture as the time of the replacement of myth by logos (Armstrong) and the domination of the abstract spirit (Marcel). The understanding of the foundations of fanaticism as a broad phenomenon undertaken by the French philosopher and the British (...) religious scholar is associated with interpretations of the concept of the transcendent. Although the socio-spiritual situation in which Marcel and Armstrong work is different, their conclusions generally coincide and become especially relevant today, when the world is on the verge of a new world war. The author briefly formulates definitions of some basic categories of G. Marcel's philosophy - "philosophical experience", "first reflection", "second reflection", "fanaticized consciousness", "disparity", "abstraction", "abstract spirit", "collective violence", "property", "being", "ideologue", "intersubjectivity", "identity", etc. Gabriel Marcel's reflection on the fundamental difference between a true believer and a religious fanatic is discussed, despite the fact that both are spoken on behalf of absolute values. The will to refuse to "question" the object of one's faith presupposes immunity to the arguments of critical thinking, which by definition would be intended to act as a kind of antidote to fanaticism as a special type of radical consciousness. The basis of fanaticism turns out to be insensitivity to what is the fanatic's idefix, while modern fanatics, in contrast to the ordinary idea of them, are often well-educated people. This is a decentered consciousness dominated by "carnal thought". Such an idea may be called the idea of equality or justice, but it is not actually a thought born from experience and sympathy for people. (shrink)

Bioethics is defined by the authors as a form of knowledge about the permissible limits of manipulating human life in the range from birth to dying. A comparative analysis of the materials of the Conference in Jerusalem and the «Handbook on Bioethics for Judges» prepared by the UNESCO Department of Bioethics in Haifa, on the one hand, and Statements of the Church and Social Council on Biomedical Ethics of the Russian Orthodox Church, on the other, was conducted. It proves that (...) bioethics as a type of modern medical ethics exists and will exist in the near future in conservative and liberal forms. Disclosure of their content contributes to solving the problem of finding compromises in specific situations of medical practice. (shrink)

Why philosophize about comedy? What is the use of investigating the comical from philosophical and psychoanalytic perspectives? In The Odd One In, Alenka Zupancic [haceks over both cs] considers how philosophy and psychoanalysis can help us understand the movement and the logic involved in the practice of comedy, and how comedy can help philosophy and psychoanalysis recognize some of the crucial mechanisms and vicissitudes of what is called humanity. Comedy by its nature is difficult to pin down with concepts and (...) definitions, but as artistic form and social practice comedy is a mode of tarrying with a foreign object--of including the exception. Philosophy's relationship to comedy, Zupancic [haceks over both cs] writes, is not exactly a simple story. It could begin with the lost book of Aristotle's Poetics, which discussed comedy and laughter. But Zupancic [haceks over both cs] draws on a whole range of philosophers and exemplars of comedy, from Aristophanes, Molière, Hegel, Freud, and Lacan to George W. Bush and Borat. She distinguishes incisively between comedy and ideologically imposed, "naturalized" cheerfulness. Real, subversive comedy thrives on the short circuits that establish an immediate connection between heterogeneous orders. Zupancic [haceks over both cs] examines the mechanisms and processes by which comedy lets the odd one in. 본 연구의 목표는 “도덕의 병원적 속성”에 대한 프로이트의 정의 및 대안을 비판적으로 분석하면서, 도덕으로 인해서 발생한 정신적 고통, 소위 도덕적 질병을 치유하기 위한 하나의 대안으로서 구조구성주의 상담모델을 구성하는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 일차적으로 니체, 프로이트 그리고 라캉으로 이어지는 윤리에 대한 비합리론적 이론과 플라톤, 칸트, 하버마스 그리고 매킨타이어로 이어지는 윤리에 대한 합리론적 이론 사이의 논쟁을 비판적으로 분석하고 이들을 “구조구성주의의 윤리설”(필자의 고유한 명칭)로 종합하는 것이고, 이차적으로 이를 근거로 한편에서는 정신분석적 상담모형과 인지행동치료 상담모형을 종합하고, 다른 한편으로는 베이지언 인지모형(Bayesian Cognition Model)과 크래이그의 수사학적 소통모형(Rhetorical (...) Model of communication by Craig, R. T.)을 통합하는 새로운 상담모형, 즉 “구조구성주의 상담모형”(필자의 교유한 명칭)을 구성하고자 한다. 그러나 현재의 제한적인 이 지면에서 상기의 모든 내용을 다루는 것은 불가능하다. 이에 현재의 논문에서는 우선 일차적인 문제, 즉 윤리에 대한 합리론적 입장과 이것에 대한 비판인 정신분석적 입장을 비교하면서, 양자의 종합 가능성 및 그 필연성을 구조구성주의 윤리설이라는 이름으로 해명하는 데 집중할 것이다. 그리고 이를 근거로 구조구성주의 상담모델을 구성하는 작업은 차후에 다른 지면에서 수행될 것이다. 본고는 인도철학사상 핵심 쟁점이었으며, 시대를 막론하고 철학적 논의에서 첫걸음일 수밖에 없는 ‘나’ 곧 ‘자아’의 개념을 밝히는 데 우선적인 목적이 있다. 이 문제에 관해 붓다가 침묵 내지는 부정으로 일관했기 때문에, 고대 용어의 풍부한 철학적 종교적 함의를 현대적 개념으로 풀어내는 일은 난해한 작업일 수밖에 없다. 붓다의 역설적인 태도로 인해 본래 의도가 어떻든건 간에 무아설(anātmavāda)은 불교의 대표사상으로 자리매김되어 버렸다. 소위 무아상경에는 ‘자아’에 대한 가설로서 다섯 skandha가 소개되었으며, 다시 이 skandha는 ‘자아’가 아닌 것으로 부정된다. 이 무아상경의 콘텍스트에서 다섯 skandha의 의미와 역할 그리고 그 상관관계를 (...) 분석하여, 현대철학이 정리한 ‘자아’의 정의와 대비함으로써 자아에 대한 붓다의 근본적인 시각 차이를 부각시키도록 한다. 여기서 rūpa의 구성요소인 upādāyarūpa가 집중 조명된다. 이 개념으로 인해 불교의 자아 정의는 기존의 서양 철학적 관점과는 근본적으로 다른 독특한 특징이 추가된다. 곧 자아는 인식주체인 동시에 그 인식대상까지 포괄한다. 이는 불교의 자아관은 곧 세계관이고, 인식론이 곧 존재론이라는 통설의 근거를 제공한다. This book proposes guidelines for constructing and evaluating definitions of terms, i.e. words or phrases of general application. The guidelines extend to adoption of nomenclature. The book is meant to be a practical guide for people who find themselves in their daily lives or their employment producing or evaluating definitions of terms. It can be consulted rather than being read through. The book’s theoretical framework is a distinction, due to Robert H. Ennis, of three dimensions of definitions: (...) the act of the definer, the content of the definition, and its form. The act of a definer is what the definer does in defining a term; the book distinguishes, following Ennis, three basic acts of defining: reporting, stipulating, and advocating. The content of a definition is in one sense the information that the definition conveys and in another sense the words in its defining part. The form of a definition is the way it is expressed, for example as a definition by genus and differentia. (shrink)

I discuss Aristotle's treatment of essence and definition in Metaphysics VII.4. I argue that it is coherent and perfectly in accord with its broader context. His discussion in VII.4 offers, on the one hand, minimal criteria for what counts as definition and essence for whatever kind of object, but also, on the other hand, stronger criteria for a primary sort of definition and essence—and thereby it serves the interest of book VII in pointing to the explanatory power of the essence (...) of composite substances. In several disciplines within science—evolutionary biology, molecular biology, astrobiology, synthetic biology, artificial life—and outside science—primarily ethics—efforts to define life have recently multiplied. However, no consensus has emerged. In this article, I argue that this is no accident. I propose a dilemma showing that the project of defining life is either impossible or pointless. The notion of life at stake in this project is either the folk concept of life or a scientific concept. In the former case, empirical evidence shows that (...) life cannot be defined. In the latter case, I argue that, although defining life may be possible, it is pointless. I conclude that scientists, philosophers, and ethicists should discard the project of defining life. The aim of the present investigation was to describe and to classify significant ethical problems encountered by the members of the staff during the daily clinical work at a hospital medical department. A set of definitions was prepared for the purpose, including the definition of a 'significant ethical problem'. During a three month period 426 inpatients and 173 outpatients were admitted. Significant ethical problems were encountered during the management of 106 in-patients (25 per cent) and 9 out-patients (5 per (...) cent). No significant difference was found between the frequency of ethical problems in female and male patients, but a positive correlation was noted between the number of problems and the patients' age. The problem types were classified according to a problem list. The results of this investigation suggest that greater attention must be paid to discussions about ethical problems among doctors and other categories of health personnel and that, among others, medical students ought to be taught the analysis of ethical problems. Kant does not provide clear-cut definitions of apperception, consciousness, and self-consciousness and everywhere uses these terms as synonyms, which creates the problem of the relationship between these faculties. The importance of this problem stems from the colossal significance of each of the above-mentioned faculties which are intimately connected with Kant’s formulation of the key tasks of transcendental philosophy. The prime task is to discover the categories of understanding and to prove the legitimacy of their use, a task that is (...) further complicated by the difference between the editions of the Critique of Pure Reason in terms of the argumentation in the section on the deduction of categories and Kant’s concept of apperception. Accordingly, the author seeks to clarify the purpose of each of the above-mentioned faculties and to establish their inter-relationship. To this end the author analyses the functional roles of consciousness, self-consciousness and apperception in solving the main tasks of the first Critique. It turns out that consciousness is a reflexive cognitive capacity which provides access to representations in our soul and allows us to distinguish them and to connect them. Self-consciousness is the mode of the functioning of consciousness which makes it possible to study three objects of consciousness: internal and external representations of the subject, the synthetic activity of understanding and our soul. Apperception is the Latin synonym of the concept of Selbstbewußtsein and is aimed at studying the unity of our representations. Because Kant distinguishes multiple kinds of unity, there are different names for apperception. Kant uses the concept of Apperzeption as a synonym of self-consciousness because his concept of consciousness follows the Leibniz-Wolffian tradition. (shrink)

A set of constraints forces trade-offs which prevent us from achieving the best possible definitions of the ‘level’ and ‘unit’ of natural selection. This set consists in decisions concerning conflicting pre-analytic intuitions in problematic cases, the relative roles of various conceptual resources in the definitions, which facts need to be accounted for using the definitions, how the relation between selection and evolution orients the definitions, and the relation between the level and unit concepts. Systematic reconstruction and (...) evaluation of leading analyses along these dimensions favors a new functional analysis over Williams’ consequentialist analysis, Sober’s causal analysis, and Dawkins’ teleological analysis. Anti-utopia as a genre of literature has always attracted scientific interest. The result of this interest is a number of definitions of the term ‘anti-utopia‘, none of which is universally accepted, and singling out of peculiar characteristics of such literature. The term ‘young adult anti-utopia‘ and specific features of such novels present a scientific lacuna. Having studied the language means creating the fictional world picture in modern anti-utopian young adult trilogies, the author identifies 15 main features typical of the (...) genre. The results of the research lead to the conclusion that some of the features are universal for the genre of anti-utopia in general: description of a totalitarian state, geographical limitation, vague identification of the past, suffering of the poor, a brave protagonist trying to shatter the existing government, etc. But some other features, mainly, the ones connected with teenage self-identification and alleviation of adolescent stand against the worlds of childhood and adulthood, are typical of young adult anti-utopias: young adult as a protagonist, importance of beauty, ability to sacrifice, a deem hope of a better future preconditioned by evolution of the human race. Prolific research suggests identity associates with pro-environmental behaviours that are individual and/or group focused. Individual PEB is personally driven, self-reliant, and are conducted on one's own. Group focused PEB is other people-reliant and completed as part of a group. A wide range of identities have been related to PEBs. For example, a recent systematic qualitative review revealed 99 different types of identities studied in a PEB context. Most studies were correlational, few had an experimental design. However, the relationships between all (...) these identities and PEBs have so far not been tested quantitatively with meta-analytical techniques. As such, a clear overview of this field is currently lacking. Due to the diverse nature of the field, a priori hypotheses were not possible and relatively broad definitions of identity had to be used to encompass all types of identities and the diverse meanings of identity that have been included in PEB research. What prior theory did allow for was to assess the distinction between two main types of identity, namely how people label, describe, and recognise oneself individually, or as part of a group. Our overall goal was thus to assess the current state of knowledge on identities and PEBs. In 104 studies using a meta-regression following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, our random-effects meta-analysis showed that the overall concept of identity associated with PEB with a medium Pearson's r. Furthermore, we found that individual identities associated more strongly with PEBs than group identities. The associations between individual and group identities were stronger when the identity and PEB were from the same category. Methodologically, the findings revealed that group identities and group PEBs were most strongly associated for self-reported rather than observed PEBs. Overall identity associated most strongly with group PEBs in the field rather than in the lab and in student- rather than non-student samples. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications. I explore the role that values and interests, especially ideological interests, play in managing and balancing epistemic risks in medicine. I will focus in particular on how diseases are identified and operationalized. Before we can do biomedical research on a condition, it needs to be identified as a medical condition, and it needs to be operationalized in a way that lets us identify sufferers, measure progress, and so forth. I will argue that each time we do this, we engage in (...) epistemic risk balancing that inevitably draws upon values and interests, often including social and ideological values. My main interest here is in the conceptualization of infertility as a disease. Infertility is a rich test case for exploring the interplay between interests and epistemic risk management. There is no uncontested or standardized definition of infertility. The various definitions of it are internally ambiguous and tension-ridden, and in spectacular contradiction with one another. Many interest groups who are invested in framing infertility as a pressing problem deserving of social and medical redress are quick to insist that it is a legitimate ‘disease,’ but they cannot agree on which disease it is, what its symptoms or diagnostic markers are, or even what its basic ontology is. I suggest that there are political explanations for this epistemic mess. Indeed, I contend that there are good scientific and ethical reasons to reduce away the category of ‘infertility,’ especially understood as a scientific or medical category; I argue that we should excise the concept from our research and clinical practices. The psychological concept of illusion is defined as a process involving an interaction of logical and empirical considerations. Common usage suggests that an illusion is a discrepancy between one's awareness and some stimulus. Following preliminary definitions of classes of stimuli, five definitions of illusion are considered, based upon the possible discrepancies between awareness and a stimulus. It is found that each of these definitions fails to make important distinctions, even to the point of equating all illusory and (...) perceptual phenomena. This dilemma is resolved by redefining illusion without reference to truth or falsity, but relative to the functioning of a given perceptual system under different conditions. The definition accepted as best is 'a discrepancy between one's perceptions of an object or event observed under different conditions'. Conditions may differ in terms of stimulus exposure, stimulus context, or experiental context. The philosophical and psychological implications are discussed of accepting a definition of illusion not based on a discrepancy between awareness and a stimulus. (shrink)

This paper supports the basic integrity of the folk psychological conception of consciousness and its importance in cognitive theorizing. Section 1 critically examines some proposed definitions of consciousness, and argues that the folk- psychological notion of phenomenal consciousness is not captured by various functional-relational definitions. Section 2 rebuts the arguments of several writers who challenge the very existence of phenomenal consciousness, or the coherence or tenability of the folk-psychological notion of awareness. Section 3 defends a significant role for (...) phenomenal consciousness in the execution of a certain cognitive task, viz., classification of one's own mental states. Execution of this task, which is part of folk psychologizing, is taken as a datum in scientific psychology. It is then argued that the most promising sort of scientific model of the self-ascription of mental states is one that posits the kinds of phenomenal properties invoked by folk psychology. Cognitive science and neuroscience can of course refine and improve upon the folk understanding of consciousness, awareness, and mental states generally. But the folk-psychological constructs should not be jettisoned; they have a role to play in cognitive theorizing. (shrink)

Current medical and legal literature generally favors a definition of death based on total cessation of brain functioning. It does not, however, supply the reasoning for this recommendation. None of the arguments for whole-brain death is convincing; there exists, however, a satisfactory rationale for identifying death with cortical death. Policymakers should refrain from endorsing any of these arguments, focussing instead on the pragmatic tasks involved in guiding medical care at the end of life.

이 글에서 나는 힐버트의 암묵적 정의 방법에 대한 프레게의 잘 알려진 비판들을 재검토한다. 이를 통해 나는 두 논제를 확립하려 한다. 첫째, 힐버트의 정의 방법은 과학이론의 원초용어의 의미를 설명하는 데 목적이 있는 것이 아니라, 그런 이론의 논리적 구조를 고정하려는 데 목적이 있다. 둘째, 논리적 구조들은 파생적인 논리적 관계에 지나지 않으므로, 힐버트의 정의 방법은 그런 구조들의 명시적인 정의를 얻기 위한 수단으로 간주되어야 한다.

Tarski 1968 makes a move in the course of providing an account of ’definitionally equivalent’ classes of algebras with a businesslike lack of fanfare and commentary, the significance of which may accordingly be lost on the casual reader. In §1 we present this move as a response to a certain difficulty in the received account of what it is to define a function symbol (or ’operation symbol’). This difficulty, which presents itself as a minor technicality needing to be got around (...) especially for the case of symbols for zero-place functions (for ’distinguished elements’), has repercussions—not widely recognised—for the account of functional completeness in sentential logic. A similarly stark comment in Church 1956 reveals an appreciation of this difficulty, though not every subsequent author on the topic has taken the point. We fill out this side of the picture in §2. The discussion of functional completeness in §2 is supplemented by some remarks on what is involved in defining a connective, which have been included in an Appendix. The emphasis throughout is on conceptual clarification rather than on proving theorems, and the main body of the paper may be regarded as an elaboration on the remarks just mentioned by Tarski and Church. The Appendix (§3) is intended to be similarly clarificatory, though this time with some corrective intent, of remarks made in and about Makinson 1973. (shrink)

This paper shows why defining „fake news“ is worthwhile and what a suitable definition of “fake news” might look like. We begin by introducing our definition of “fake news” (§2) and employ it to set fake news apart from related phenomena that are often conflated with it (§3). We then extract seven potential dimensions of the concept of fake news from the literature (§4) and compare the most representative definitions that have been proposed so far along those dimensions (§5). (...) In particular, we discuss the definitions by Rini, Gelfert, Dentith, Mukerji, and Zimmermann & Kohring, show up their merits and debits and put them in relation to ours. Although we take our definition as the starting point and argue for it on the side-lines, our primary aims are (i) to enable a systematic evaluation of prevalent definitions with respect to their extensional scope, practical utility, and conceptual transparency, (ii) to demonstrate that there is more widespread agreement than one would think on the outset, and (iii) to show (in §6) that defining “fake news” is not only far from futile, but of vital importance to confront the epistemic threats posed by fake news. 디그나가는 분별지를 “nāmajātyādiyojanā”라고 정의한다. 이에 대해 지넨드라붓디는 PSṬ에서 ‘명칭’과 ‘종류 등’이 대상과 결합하는 행위의 주체가 대상을 이해(pratīti)하는 것이 분별이라는 취지로 해석한다. 즉 ‘명칭’은 실재하는 것이고 ‘종류 등’는 비실재로 그것은 동등한 입장에서 병렬적 관계에 놓일 수 없음을 지적한다. 한편 그가 ‘pratīti’라는 용어를 사용하는 것 등은 다르마키르티의 영향으로 보인다. 산타락시타와 카말라쉴라는 이 복합어의 해석을 둘러싸고 “명칭과 종류 등의 결합을 가진 인식” 또는 “명칭과 종류 등의 결합”이라는 두 가지 해석의 가능성을 제시한다. 전자는 소유복합어로 명칭과 종류 등이 결합한 어떤 인식이 분별지라는 의미이고 후자는 한정복합어로 (...) 명칭과 종류의 결합 그 자체가 분별지라는 의미이다. In this essay I argue that given Donnellan’s formulation of the attributive uses of definite descriptions, as well as Kripke’s [6] and Salmon’s [10] generalized accounts, most uses of definite descriptions that are taken to be attributive turn out not to be so. In building up to my main thesis, I first consider certain problematic cases of uses of definite descriptions that do not neatly fit into any category. I then argue that, in general, a complete definite description we use (...) is complex, in which there is an embedded singular term that is used referentially. From this I conclude that an attributive use of a definite description is an extremely rare linguistic phenomenon, much less frequent than what Donnellan, Kripke, and Salmon have presupposed; so much so that the standard examples given by Donnellan of the attributive use of definite descriptions do not qualify as attributive. Although black holes are objects of central importance across many fields of physics, there is no agreed upon definition for them, a fact that does not seem to be widely recognized. Physicists in different fields conceive of and reason about them in radi- cally different, and often conflicting, ways. All those ways, however, seem sound in the relevant contexts. After examining and comparing many of the definitions used in practice, I consider the problems that the lack of a universally (...) accepted definition leads to, and discuss whether one is in fact needed for progress in the physics of black holes. I conclude that, within reasonable bounds, the profusion of different definitions is in fact a virtue, making the investigation of black holes possible and fruitful in all the many different kinds of problems about them that physicists consider, although one must take care in trying to translate results between fields.
