Background: Independent decision-making is one of the basic rights of patients. However, in clinical practice, most older cancer patients’ treatment decisions are made by family members. Objective: This study attempted to analyze the treatment decision-making process and formation mechanism for older cancer patients within the special cultural context of Chinese medical practice. Method: A qualitative study was conducted. With the sample saturation principle, data collected by in-depth interviews with 17 family members and 12 patients were subjected to thematic analysis. Ethical (...) considerations: The study was approved by the ethics committees of Sun Yat-sen University. All participants provided verbal informed consent after being told their rights of confidentiality, anonymity, and voluntary participation. They had the right to refuse to answer questions and could withdraw at any time. Results: Three themes emerged: (1) complex process; (2) transformation of family decision-making power; and (3) individual compromise. Family members inevitably had different opinions during the long process of treatment decision-making for older cancer patients. The direction of this process could be regarded as an extension of the family power relationship. The patient usually compromised the decision to survive, which was made by family members. Conclusion: This study describes the treatment decision-making process of older cancer patients in the context of Chinese culture. The reasons underlying this process are related to the views on life and death and family values. An individual is a part of the family, which is often seen as the minimal interpersonal unit in Chinese society. It is significant that while emphasizing patient autonomy in the decision-making process, health professionals should also pay attention to the important roles of culture and family. (shrink)

As global warming becomes increasingly prominent, countries worldwide advocate for a low-carbon economy to cope with the pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Chinese government has proposed a “dual carbon” goal of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2060. The disclosure of carbon information by Chinese enterprises has attracted widespread attention from society. This study selects the constituents of the Social Responsibility Index of China Shanghai Stock Exchange from 2016 to 2020 as samples to empirically (...) analyze the relationship between the level of carbon information disclosure and corporate value, and the moderating effect of greenwashing behavior. Results indicated that the quality of carbon disclosure is positively correlated with the enterprise value. Greenwashing behavior promotes the positive impact of carbon disclosure quality on enterprise value in the short run, but this promoting effect fades in the long run. We further found that the carbon information disclosure of non-heavy-pollution enterprises has a more obvious positive impact on enterprise value than that of heavily polluting enterprises. Additionally, the positive impact of carbon information disclosure on enterprise value is more visible among enterprises in a good legal environment than those in a poor legal environment. This study enriches the relevant literature on carbon information disclosure and enterprise “greenwashing” behavior and has practical significance for promoting China’s low-carbon development in the context of ecological civilization and improving the enthusiasm for the quality of enterprise carbon information disclosure. To study whether Tai Chi practice can improve the brain connectivity of the prefrontal lobe of college students, the positive psychological capital questionnaires and resting EEG signals were acquired from 50 college students including 25 TC practitioners and 25 demographically matched TC healthy controls. The results showed that the score of the positive psychological capital questionnaire of the TC group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and the node degree of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe of (...) both groups was positively correlated with the score of the positive psychological capital questionnaire. In addition, the response time of the TC group under auditory stimulation was significantly shorter than that of the control group, and there was a significant positive correlation between response time and its characteristic path length, and a significant negative correlation with global efficiency. Meanwhile, during the selected range of sparsity, the difference in global network parameters between two groups is significant in the alpha band. Under all single sparsity, the clustering coefficient, global efficiency, and local efficiency of the TC group have a higher trend, while the characteristic path length tended to be shorter. In the analysis of the local characteristics of the resting brain functional network, it was found that the node degree of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe of the TC group was higher, and the difference was significant in some nodes. These results all point to the fact that TC practice has a certain impact on specific brain areas of the brain. (shrink)

The longstanding and often unproductive debates among North American philosophers of technology—particularly over the distinction between Technology and technologies—call for a renewed examination of Heidegger’s ideas. This paper argues that, despite their differences, both camps share a concern central to The Question Concerning Technology: the pursuit of a free relationship between human existence and technology. We show that Heidegger paradoxically holds that while modern technology reduces beings to mere resources, authentic freedom can emerge from within this very condition. Drawing on (...) an existential rather than purely ontological reading of Heidegger, and engaging with figures such as Don Ihde, Peter-Paul Verbeek, and Andrew Feenberg, we reinterpret the notion of freedom in terms of horizonality and historicity. This approach, we suggest, offers a way to overcome the Technology/technologies divide and to revitalize contemporary philosophy of technology by bridging transcendental and empirical perspectives. Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) is unethical behavior driven by an intention to assist an organization. This study is one of the first attempts to examine the consequences of UPB. We argue that such types of behaviors can induce failure in self-regulation and thereby give rise to counterproductive work behavior (CWB). Based on self-regulation theory, we theorize that the breakdown in three fundamental mechanisms (i.e., moral standards, monitoring, and discipline) explains the link between UPB and CWB. Moreover, moral identity internalization can (...) temper these breakdown processes such that employees with higher levels of moral identity internalization are less likely to experience moral disengagement, workplace entitlement, or self-control depleting after enacting UPB, and therefore, will engage in less CWB. We conducted a 7-day experience sampling study of 95 financial service employees in a Chinese bank to test our theoretical model. The results indicated that transgressions committed with the intention of helping the organization would ultimately harm the organization, especially for those with lower moral identity internalization. We say that a theory is bounded if there is an axiomatization involving only $\forall _n$ -formulas for some finite n, and unbounded otherwise. One might expect bounded theories to have only bounded types. In fact, an analogue holds in infinitary logic, where the complexity of a Scott sentence roughly agrees with the complexity of the most complicated (...) automorphism orbit. China accounts for approximately 50% of global new liver cancer cases, predominantly driven by hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma. The disease presents a distinctive socio-medical profile characterized by a prolonged etiological chain (chronic hepatitis B—cirrhosis—liver cancer), late-stage diagnosis, and a cultural norm of family-first disclosure—whereby physicians typically inform family members before patients themselves. These features position family caregivers, rather than patients, as the primary information seekers and communicators in online health discourse. Drawing on the Comprehensive Model of Information Seeking (...) (CMIS) and Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory, this study analyzes 1,857 liver cancer-related user comments collected from Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book)—a Chinese lifestyle-oriented social media platform with over 300 million monthly active users—between December 2024 and February 2026. BERTopic, a neural topic modeling framework suited to short Chinese social media texts, was employed for inductive topic extraction. The analysis yielded 15 interpretable topics, organized into five thematic categories: clinical diagnosis and treatment (34.8%), emotional support and caregiving (26.3%), upstream chronic disease management (14.2%), symptom and tumor assessment (12.5%), and online health consultation (9.6%). Notably, hepatitis B and cirrhosis medication management emerged as the second-largest topic, directly mirroring the HBV-dominant etiological chain characteristic of Chinese liver cancer. Family-role terms ("father," "mother," "husband") and Buddhist prayer language appeared as high-salience keywords across multiple topics, underscoring the caregiver-driven and culturally embedded nature of the discourse. The study proposes the concept of "proxy information seeker" as a theoretical extension of CMIS, reveals privacy boundary tensions arising from caregivers' routine public disclosure of patient health information under China's non-disclosure culture, and provides empirical grounding for caregiver-oriented platform governance and digital health literacy interventions. One of the most debated problems in the foundations of the special relativity theory is the role of conventionality. A common belief is that the Lorentz transformation is correct but the Galilean transformation is wrong. It is another common belief that the Galilean transformation is incompatible with Maxwell equations. However, the “principle of general covariance” in general relativity makes any spacetime coordinate transformation equally valid. This includes the Galilean transformation as well. This renders a new paradox. This new paradox is (...) resolved with the argument that the Galilean transformation is equivalent to the Lorentz transformation. The resolution of this new paradox also provides the most straightforward resolution of an older paradox which is due to Selleri in. I also present a consistent electrodynamics formulation including Maxwell equations and electromagnetic wave equations under the Galilean transformation, in the exact form for any high speed, rather than in low speed approximation. Electrodynamics in rotating reference frames is rarely addressed in textbooks. Metaverse is to build a virtual world that is both mapped and independent of the real world in cyberspace by using the improvement in the maturity of various digital technologies, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, big data, and 5G, which is important for the future development of a wide variety of professions, including education. The metaverse represents the latest stage of the development of visual immersion technology. Its essence is an online digital space parallel to the real world, which (...) is becoming a practical field for the innovation and development of human society. The most prominent advantage of the English-teaching metaverse is that it can provide an immersive and interactive teaching field for teachers and students, simultaneously meeting the teaching and learning needs of teachers and students in both the physical world and virtual world. This study constructs experiential situational English-teaching scenario and convolutional neural networks –recurrent neural networks fusion models are proposed to recognize students’ emotion electroencephalogram in experiential English teaching during the feature space of time domain, frequency domain, and spatial domain. Analyzing EEG data collected by OpenBCI EEG Electrode Cap Kit from students, experiential English-teaching scenario is designed into three types: sequential guidance, comprehensive exploration, and crowd-creation construction. Experimental data analysis of the three kinds of learning activities shows that metaverse-powered experiential situational English teaching can promote the improvement of students’ sense of interactivity, immersion, and cognition, and the accuracy and analysis time of CNN–RNN fusion model is much higher than that of baselines. China carries approximately half of the global new burden of primary liver cancer, and the extended disease trajectory of "hepatitis B – cirrhosis – hepatocellular carcinoma" places patients and family caregivers in a state of sustained, stage-specific health information-seeking needs. With the popularisation of user-generated-content (UGC) platforms such as Xiaohongshu (also known as Rednote), a growing number of users bypass or supplement formal medical consultation by treating these platforms as informal "clinics". However, existing research has largely focused on post-diagnosis caregiver (...) discourse and emotional support, while paying insufficient attention to the pre-diagnosis behaviour of users uploading imaging reports and soliciting lay diagnostic judgement—what we term diagnostic health information seeking (DHIS)—and to the quality of the replies they receive. Drawing on health information-seeking behaviour (HISB) models and information quality theory, this study integrates two independently scraped Xiaohongshu datasets ("liver cancer" and "liver lesion"), yielding 2,761 texts (2,218 question-oriented comments and 543 platform-side replies). A c-TF-IDF–based BERTopic-style pipeline combined with rule-based coding is applied to a three-track design. Three findings emerge. First, diagnostic seeking accounts for 31.5% of pre-diagnosis comments (liver-lesion context) but only 3.4% of post-diagnosis comments (liver-cancer context), a nearly tenfold gap (χ²(1) = 333.84, p <.001). Second, emotional seeking shows the reverse pattern (11.5% vs. 20.7%, χ²(1) = 31.68, p <.001). Third, among 543 question–reply dyads, 40.1% of diagnostic questions received no response; among those that were answered, only 13.6% received professional medical advice, while 15.2% received low-quality reassurance or deflection. We propose the concept of platform medicalisation and offer implications for platform governance, credential verification for content creators, and digital health-literacy interventions. (shrink)

This review explored the investigations on the role of teacher immediacy in English as a Foreign Language learners’ foreign language enjoyment. Earlier investigations have proved that teacher immediacy, such as posture, body language, vocal variety, gestures, and smile, can significantly affect learners’ positive emotions like foreign language enjoyment. It means that teachers should try both to control the feelings of their learners and manage their feelings to enhance enjoyment among learners. Moreover, studies have shown that teacher immediacy is significantly related (...) to learner motivation which is a basis for increasing foreign language enjoyment among learners. However, specific strategies can be employed to increase learner motivation, which in return increases learner foreign language enjoyment. Furthermore, the study presented the implications and future directions of this line of research for different people, such as EFL teachers, teacher educators, and foreign language scholars. The ideas can improve their awareness of teacher-student relationships, in particular, teacher immediacy and its role in learners’ foreign language enjoyment. (shrink)

Multilevel item response theory models are used widely in educational and psychological research. This type of modeling has two or more levels, including an item response theory model as the measurement part and a linear-regression model as the structural part, the aim being to investigate the relation between explanatory variables and latent variables. However, the linear-regression structural model focuses on the relation between explanatory variables and latent variables, which is only from the perspective of the average tendency. When we need (...) to explore the relationship between variables at various locations along the response distribution, quantile regression is more appropriate. To this end, a quantile-regression-type structural model named as the quantile MLIRT model is introduced under the MLIRT framework. The parameters of the proposed model are estimated using the Gibbs sampling algorithm, and comparison with the original MLIRT model is conducted via a simulation study. The results show that the parameters of the Q-MLIRT model could be recovered well under different quantiles. Finally, a subset of data from PISA 2018 is analyzed to illustrate the application of the proposed model. (shrink)

This paper draws upon both Carl Jung’s theory of the psyche and nonviolence philosophy to re-examine curriculum dynamics in the context of teacher education. An integrative psychic life is enabled by the transcendent function of assimilating the unconscious to expand the horizon of consciousness while the integrative power of nonviolence heals the wounds of violence and promotes compassionate relationships. These theories follow different directions—the primary focus of Jung’s theory is the individual person and that of nonviolence theory is humane relationality—but (...) their underlying philosophical principles also intersect in ways that have important implications for today’s education. This paper focuses on three major intersections: the thread of interconnectedness is the undercurrent of an integrative psychic life and the underlying foundation for nonviolent relations; the shadow awareness within the individual psyche creates a social space for compassionate relationships with others; and complementary modes of psychic and nonviolent integration provide multiple pathways for teacher educators’ pedagogy and students’ self-education. After elaborating on these intersecting aspects and their curriculum implications, the final section discusses curriculum dynamics for subjective and social transformation through analysing the interactive relationships between and among teacher educators, students, texts, and contexts. Background Intensive care nurses repeatedly witness suffering, dying, grief, and conflict. In contemporary intensive care, protocols and monitoring routines can compress nursing work into execution and vigilance, limiting opportunities to exercise moral agency and creating ethically fraught “witnessing” positions. Research objectives To explore how intensive care nurses experience vicarious trauma, and how moral agency, ethical tensions, and organizational conditions shape its accumulation and repair. Research design A qualitative study using face-to-face semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Participants and research context (...) Fifteen registered nurses from a general intensive care unit in eastern China, purposively sampled for maximum variation in gender, professional title, experience, and recent high-impact exposures. Ethical considerations Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (approval number: 2025-KLS-184-02). Written informed consent was obtained; confidentiality and a distress protocol were applied. Findings Four themes were generated: (1) occupational boundary permeation and resonance, including identity mirroring, emotional absorption, and moral tension; (2) a spectrum of adaptation, where defensive distancing functioned as a strategy of moral survival under repeated exposure; (3) fractures in professional meaning and points of rupture, including constrained voice and experiences of powerless witnessing; and (4) meaning reconstruction in the cracks, reflecting moral repair through process-oriented care, renewed boundaries, and re-grounding in dignity-preserving practice. Conclusions Vicarious trauma in intensive care nursing is not only an individual psychological burden but an ethical and organizational phenomenon shaped by constrained moral agency and ethically contested trajectories of care. Interventions should move beyond individualized resilience and strengthen ethical infrastructures that legitimize nursing voice, support reflective processing, and enable ethically defensible practice in high-acuity settings. Calcium (Ca2+) signaling as the primary intracellular second messenger orchestrates a myriad of physiological processes. Maintaining Ca2+ homeostasis relies on Ca2+ channels, pumps, exchangers, and buffers. Sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+‐ATPases (SERCAs or ATP2A) encoded by ATP2A1, ATP2A2, or ATP2A3 are primary Ca2+ pumps localized on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) that actively sequester Ca2+ from the cytoplasm back to the ER/SR, thereby preventing the detrimental overload of cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration. Recent studies have highlighted the significant roles and the underlying mechanisms (...) of SERCAs in non‐excitatory cells such as those within epithelial, adipose, immune, and reproductive systems or tissues. This article aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the functional characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of the SERCA family, with a particular focus on the latest research concerning their roles and mechanisms in various non‐excitatory cells and related cancers. This work will provide insight into understanding the Ca2+ signaling regulatory networks mediated by SERCAs and their implications for the diagnosis and treatment of Ca2+ dyshomeostasis‐related diseases and propose potentially constructive suggestions for the direction of research around Ca2+ signaling transductions, as well as guiding strategies for disease diagnosis, treatment, and drug development by targeting SERCAs. Alfred North Whitehead's theory of organic education grows out of his philosophy of organism. His organic education has attracted more and more attention in China. This article first outlines the development of organic education in China in the past hundred years and then explains why Whitehead's organic education could continue to flourish in contemporary China.

The development of CSR reflects the level and characteristics of professional sports organizations, and the CSR of professional sports clubs varies among different countries and regions. In order to explore the content of the CSR of Chinese professional sports clubs in a more comprehensive and systematic way, this study organizes previous studies on the CSR of clubs in different countries and regions, and analyzes the differences between Chinese professional sports clubs and clubs in Europe, North America, Japan, and other countries (...) and regions. We collected the opinions of 20 experts through semi-structured interviews and combined them with the “Five in One” overall layout to construct and explain the CSR system of professional sports clubs in China in the new era, filling the gaps in research on this topic. Research suggests that social economic responsibility, social political responsibility, social cultural responsibility, social construction responsibility, and social ecological responsibility constitute the CSR system of professional sports clubs in China. Within a certain range, the larger the scale and stronger the comprehensive strength of a club, the stronger its ability to fulfill its responsibilities, the more targets it fulfills, and the richer its content. The institutional environment and social awareness may account for this difference, and in a government-led social environment or in the case of nationalized club ownership, the Chinese plan may be more applicable. Our research not only provides theoretical reference for subsequent research on the CSR content of professional sports clubs but also helps guide the CSR practice of clubs of different sizes, thereby promoting the exploration of diversified CSR development patterns of professional sports clubs in the academic community. The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought drastic changes to English teaching as it has shifted from the offline mode before the pandemic to the online mode during the pandemic. However, in the post-pandemic era, there are still many problems in the effective implementation of the process of English teaching, leading to the inability of achieving better results in the quality and efficiency of English teaching and effective cultivation of students’ practical application ability. In recent years, English speaking has attracted the (...) attention of experts and scholars. Therefore, this study constructs an interactive English-speaking practice scene based on a virtual character. A dual-modality emotion recognition method is proposed that mainly recognizes and analyzes facial expressions and physiological signals of students and the virtual character in each scene. Thereafter, the system adjusts the difficulty of the conversation according to the current state of students, toward making the conversation more conducive to the students’ understanding and gradually improving their English-speaking ability. The simulation compares nine facial expressions based on the eNTERFACE05 and CAS-PEAL datasets, which shows that the emotion recognition method proposed in this manuscript can effectively recognize students’ emotions in interactive English-speaking practice and reduce the recognition time to a great extent. The recognition accuracy of the nine facial expressions was close to 90% for the dual-modality emotion recognition method in the eNTERFACE05 dataset, and the recognition accuracy of the dual-modality emotion recognition method was significantly improved with an average improvement of approximately 5%. Digital images of cultural heritage (CH) contain rich semantic information. However, today’s semantic representations of CH images fail to fully reveal the content entities and context within these vital surrogates. This paper draws on the fields of image research and digital humanities to propose a systematic methodology and a technical route for semantic enrichment of CH digital images. This new methodology systematically applies a series of procedures including: semantic annotation, entity-based enrichment, establishing internal relations, event-centric enrichment, defining hierarchy relations between (...) properties text annotation, and finally, named entity recognition in order to ultimately provide fine-grained contextual semantic content disclosure. The feasibility and advantages of the proposed semantic enrichment methods for semantic representation are demonstrated via a visual display platform for digital images of CH built to represent the Wutai Mountain Map, a typical Dunhuang mural. This study proves that semantic enrichment offers a promising new model for exposing content at a fine-grained level, and establishing a rich semantic network centered on the content of digital images of CH. During the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations need to effectively manage changes, and employees need to proactively adapt to these changes. The present research investigated when and how individual employees’ narcissism was related to their change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Specifically, based on a trait activation perspective, this research proposed the hypotheses that individual employees’ narcissism and environmental uncertainty would interactively influence employees’ change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior via felt responsibility for constructive change; furthermore, the effect of narcissism on change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior via (...) felt responsibility for constructive change would be stronger when the environmental uncertainty prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic was high rather than low. Two studies were conducted to test these hypotheses: an online survey of 180 employees in mainland China and a field study of 167 leader–follower dyads at two Chinese companies. The current research reveals a bright side of narcissism, which has typically been recognized as a dark personality trait, and enriches the understanding of the antecedents of change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Social attachment can explain well the bond between users and social media, but existing research lacks measures of social attachment scales. To this end, this study takes attachment theory as the basis for scale development. On the basis of the development of multidimensional scales for adult, brand, and local attachment, it combines existing relevant studies on social attachment, selects three representative social media such as TikTok, WeChat, and MicroBlog as theoretical samples, explores the concept and structure of social attachment, and (...) develops a social attachment scale through qualitative interviews and open-ended questionnaires. This study applied SPSS 24.0 and Mplus 7.0 to test the social attachment scale. The findings reveal that social attachment consists of three constructs: social connection, social dependence and social identity, and the scale possesses high reliability and validity. This study has developed and validated a social attachment scale in the context of social software use, realizing a quantitative study of social attachment and providing a basis for future empirical research related to social attachment. This research has purpose to take local woven or “Pahkahmah” which is a cultural product of the local woven of Nong Kao district in Kanchanaburi province of Thailand to develop for and applying with contemporary fashion design in order to increase its value. The process of creation in this research has 5 steps as 1. Create concept and inspiration 2. Design collections for the improved textiles 3. Create decoration technique for the improved textile and collections 4. Create the prototype collections (...) and products 5. Evaluate satisfactory for the prototype collection and products. The improved textiles were used in making 3 collections of fashion apparels and costume accessories in street fashion for present lifestyle. Knowledge to improved and develop local Pahkahmah woven textile and the idea from prototype collections and products from this research was relayed to makers of Pahkahmah woven textile in Nong Kao district, Kanchanaburi province. Evaluation for satisfactory to the creative idea and developed textile products by representatives of Pahkahmah woven textile maker community and consumers revealed average score 4.45 with standard deviation 0.27. Knowledge from this research become a guideline for sustainable development and innovative idea for increasing commercial value to the local Pahkahma woven products of Nong Kao district community. With the rapidly expanding catalogue of scientific publications, especially within the Biomedical Sciences field, it is becoming increasingly difficult for researchers to search for, read or even interpret emerging scientific findings. PubMed, just one of the current biomedical data repositories, comprises over 33 million citations for biomedical research, and over 2500 publications are added each day. To further strengthen the impact biomedical research, we suggest that there should be more synergy between publications and machines. By bringing machines into the realm (...) of research and publication, we can greatly augment the assessment, investigation and cataloging of the biomedical literary corpus. The effective application of machine-based manuscript assessment and interpretation is now crucial, and potentially stands as the most effective way for researchers to comprehend and process the tsunami of biomedical data and literature. Many biomedical manuscripts are currently published online in poorly searchable document types, with figures and data presented in formats that are partially inaccessible to machine-based approaches. The structure and format of biomedical manuscripts should be adapted to facilitate machine-assisted interrogation of this important literary corpus. In this context, it is important to embrace the concept that biomedical scientists should also write manuscripts that can be read by machines. It is likely that an enhanced human–machine synergy in reading biomedical publications will greatly enhance biomedical data retrieval and reveal novel insights into complex datasets. (shrink)
