Ex ante contractualism holds that in situations involving risk we ought to act in accordance with principles that license the action that satisfies the strongest individual claim, where those claims are a function of the expected value that a given policy gives each person ex ante. I here challenge ex ante contractualism on contractualist grounds. I argue that adopting ex ante contractualism would have far reaching implications that contractualists, or many nonconsequentialist in general, would find very hard to accept. Individualist or non-aggregative moral theories, such as Scanlonian contractualism, deny the plausibility or the permissibility of interpersonal aggregation of harms and benefits or individual claims to determine what we ought to do. There has recently been much discussion about how these theories should be extended to cover cases in which we face empirical uncertainty about the effects of our actions. In this article, I provide a critical introduction to this debate. Insofar as development implies economic growth, the term ‘sustainable development’ appears to some as a contradiction in terms. However, such conclusions still lack a thorough examination of the conceptual structure of the two terms between which there is a purported contradiction. In order to address this issue, the present paper scrutinises some of the assumptions which underwrite the ideologies of sustainability and of development. It is argued that there are key assumptions which both ideas have in common, and that sustainable (...) development is thus perfectly coherent on a conceptual level. It is alternatives which retain either term (such as ‘sustainable degrowth') that are embroiled in paradox. The paper then examines two concepts for criticising the ideology of economic growth in other terms: dépense and conviviality. It is argued that the latter is preferable to the former for the purpose of developing post-sustainable critiques of growth. (shrink)

This article reads the recent political sequence through the concept of ‘hyperpolitics’. In contrast to previous types of post-politics or mass politics, ‘hyperpolitics’ stands for a distinctly novel mode of political commitment characteristic of (...) the 2010s, in which a formerly apolitical public sphere finds itself intensely repoliticized, imposing itself on other domains such as the private, cultural, or economic. Die Vernunft kann sich nicht in der Wirklichkeit eines absoluten Grundes ihrer eigenen Wirklichkeit versichern. Zwar realisiert die Vernunft, auf ein Absolutes bezogen zu sein, aber dessen Wirklichkeit als schöpferische Freiheit entzieht sich dem konzipierenden Ausgriff der Vernunft . Allerdings befreit die von der Vernunft eingesehene Möglichkeit dieser rational uneinholbaren Wirklichkeit zu einem – theoretisch nicht erzwingbaren, aber auch nicht als irrational denunzierbaren – Perspektivenwechsel . This introduction familiarises the reader with the project undertaken in Hegel and Schelling in Early Nineteenth-Century France by focusing on the various methodological requirements for its transnational reception-history. Such a methodology should trace the mutations, contestations and hybridisations that constitute the dissemination of Hegel’s and Schelling’s philosophies into France. We argue, in particular, for a renewed method in the history of post-KantianKantianism philosophy which is, firstly, more sensitive to the work of intellectual history and the history of ideas; secondly, (...) as interested in the material processes by which an argument circulates as the validity of that argument itself; and, thirdly, which does away with the canon, as far as possible, in favour of a history of philosophy done in a minoritarian key. This chapter argues that the postmodern deconstruction of many modern ideals has paved the way for a new era. If postmodernism was the process of tearing a building down block by block, the global pluralistic age is the new building that was constructed out of those old blocks. The global pluralistic age is not an outright rejection of modernity, but a nonlinear trajectory that considers multiple narratives while balancing multiple modernities. We are in a post-historical age that is no (...) longer progressing in a linear fashion toward some artistic telos. Instead, we live in a radically pluralistic world that acknowledges and values global expressions of art, and makes room for all the artistic discoveries of bygone eras. Das bedeutet, dass wir den Gedanken ad acta legen müssen, nach wie vor jene Protagonisten des Universums zu sein, die über die symbolische, ikonische, narrative Dimension eines Objekts, einer Situation, eines Ortes, einer Person (...) – und damit über die Frage, ob diese „das Zeug zum Mythos haben“ – entscheiden. Diese neue Situation knüpft an Barthes selbst an und an die Erfahrung des Oulipo1: eine literarische Maschine, die man als intelligent bezeichnen könnte (ChatGPT), gespeist durch Millionen von Gesprächen. Eine superweises Wesen oder ein idiotischer Gelehrter – sie schreiben jedenfalls diesen Artikel für mich, mit mir, gemeinsam mit all jenen, die sie gefüttert haben. BackgroundInstrumented gait analysis post-stroke is becoming increasingly more common in research and clinics. Although overall standardized procedures are proposed, an almost infinite number of potential variables for kinematic analysis is generated and there remains a lack of consensus regarding which are the most important for sufficient evaluation. The current aim was to identify a discriminative core set of kinematic variables for gait post-stroke.MethodsWe applied a three-step process of statistical analysis on commonly used kinematic gait variables comprising the whole (...) body, derived from 3D motion data on 31 persons post-stroke and 41 non-disabled controls. The process of identifying relevant core sets involved: exclusion of variables for which there were no significant group differences; systematic investigation of one, or combinations of either two, three, or four significant variables whereby each core set was evaluated using a leave-one-out cross-validation combined with logistic regression to estimate a misclassification rate.ResultsThe best MR for one single variable was shown for the Duration of single-support or Duration of 2nd double-support phase, corresponding to an 89–90% probability of correctly classifying a person as post-stroke/control. Adding Pelvis sagittal ROM to either of the variables Self-selected gait speed or Stride length, alternatively adding Ankle sagittal ROM to the Duration of single-stance phase, increased the probability of correctly classifying individuals to 93–94%. Combining three variables decreased the MR further to 0.04, suggesting a probability of 96% for correct classification. These core sets contained: a spatial or a temporal variable, Pelvis sagittal ROM or Ankle plantarflexion during push-off, and Arm Posture Score or Cadence or a knee/shoulder joint angle variable. Adding a fourth variable did not further improve the MR.ConclusionA core set combining a few crucial kinematic variables may sufficiently evaluate post-stroke gait and should receive more attention in rehabilitation. Our results may contribute toward a consensus on gait evaluation post-stroke, which could substantially facilitate future diagnosis and monitoring of rehabilitation progress. (shrink)

Aber die App ist offenkundig vom Himmel gefallen, insofern sie sich zunächst als ein superlativisches Interface darstellt. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass derartige Applikationen die besten Boten der Dingwelt (...) sind: Gerade im digitalen Bilderrausch liegt die Vollkommenheit und zugleich die Abwesenheit eines Ursprungs, eine Verwandlung von Momenten in Hashtags (getaggte Bilder sind viel auffindbarer als das eigene, ungetaggte Leben) – kurz, eine stille Betrachtung der Leben anderer, die uns am Reich des Wunderbaren eine Teilhabe versprechen. This paper examines the apparent contradictions between the use of the fragmented close-up in Fernand Léger's film Ballet mécanique and his depiction of the cohesive face in his painting in the early 1920s. I argue that this paradox stems from Léger's seeing, in certain pre-war movements whose aesthetics were premised on fragmentation, an endorsement of the supreme value of technology and modernity to the human subject, and of the suborning of that subject to industrial modernity, with all the catastrophic human (...) consequences that were then witnessed in the First World War. These “aesthetics of fragmentation” are then compared and contrasted with Purism's post-war reconciliation of “man” as a cohesive being, achieved through its conservative revision of modernist aesthetics. This critique is effected through the “portmanteau” of Ballet mécanique, which is effectively an assemblage of different pre-war modernist aesthetics contrasted with Purist depictions of cohesive form. In the context of digitalization, the analogue vinyl record has gained new popularity in a robust niche market since around the mid-2000s. This book chapter analyzes this commodity object from a critical capitalist perspective and classifies it into four commodity forms of the post-industrial economy. Based on this, the logic of particularity inherent in the vinyl record and related practices of singularization are demonstrated. With a view to changes in technical playback equipment and related changing reception dispositives in dealing (...) with music, the authors conclude that the current vinyl culture reflects a division of society. The culturality of the vinyl record points to specific interweavings with its users, which is expressed in multilayered practices, narratives, and myths. The article concludes by arguing that the vinyl record is a crystallization point for a comprehensive, partly paradoxical social discourse on modernization processes, especially on the metaprocess of digitalization. We conducted two eye-tracking experiments investigating the processing of the Mandarin reflexive ziji in order to tease apart structurally constrained accounts from standard cue-based accounts of memory retrieval. In both experiments, we tested whether structurally inaccessible distractors that fulfill the animacy requirement of ziji influence processing times at the reflexive. In Experiment 1, we manipulated animacy of the antecedent and a structurally inaccessible distractor intervening between the antecedent and the reflexive. In conditions where the accessible antecedent mismatched the animacy cue, (...) we found inhibitory interference whereas in antecedent-match conditions, no effect of the distractor was observed. In Experiment 2, we tested only antecedent-match configurations and manipulated locality of the reflexive-antecedent binding (Mandarin allows non-local binding). Participants were asked to hold three distractors (animate vs. inanimate nouns) in memory while reading the target sentence. We found slower reading times when animate distractors were held in memory (inhibitory interference). Moreover, we replicated the locality effect reported in previous studies. These results are incompatible with structure-based accounts. However, the cue-based ACT-R model of Lewis and Vasishth ( 2005 ) cannot explain the observed pattern either. We therefore extend the original ACT-R model and show how this model not only explains the data presented in this article, but is also able to account for previously unexplained patterns in the literature on reflexive processing. Two classes of account have been proposed to explain the memory processes subserving the processing of reflexive-antecedent dependencies. Structure-based accounts assume that the retrieval of the antecedent is guided by syntactic tree-configurational information without considering other kinds of information such as gender marking in the case of English reflexives. By contrast, unconstrained cue-based retrieval assumes that all available information is used for retrieving the antecedent. Similarity-based interference effects from structurally illicit distractors which match a non-structural retrieval cue have been interpreted (...) as evidence favoring the unconstrained cue-based retrieval account since cue-based retrieval interference from structurally illicit distractors is incompatible with the structure-based account. However, it has been argued that the observed effects do not necessarily reflect interference occurring at the moment of retrieval but might equally well be accounted for by interference occurring already at the stage of encoding or maintaining the antecedent in memory, in which case they cannot be taken as evidence against the structure-based account. We present three experiments (self-paced reading and eye-tracking) on German reflexives and Swedish reflexive and pronominal possessives in which we pit the predictions of encoding interference and cue-based retrieval interference against each other. We could not find any indication that encoding interference affects the processing ease of the reflexive-antecedent dependency formation. Thus, there is no evidence that encoding interference might be the explanation for the interference effects observed in previous work. We therefore conclude that invoking encoding interference may not be a plausible way to reconcile interference effects with a structure-based account of reflexive processing. (shrink)

Bei den beiden Gruß-MomentenGruß-Moment I und II (für Pierre Boulez)für Boulez[aut]Boulez, Pierre wie auch bei den fünf Gedenkstücken für Nono[aut]Nono, Luigi steht eine enge Freundschaft zwischen dem Komponisten und dem Widmungsträger im Hintergrund. So hat Boulez[aut]Boulez, Pierre einige der Werke Rihms maßgeblich aufgeführt, auch uraufgeführt, und Rihm ist Boulez[aut]Boulez, Pierre nach dessen Tod 2016 als Leiter des Kompositionsstudios bei den Luzerner Festspielen gefolgt. Und bemerkenswert an der Beziehung zwischen Rihm und Nono[aut]Nono, Luigi ist das nie nachlassende Interesse Nonos[aut]Nono, Luigi an den Partituren Rihms und die freundschaftlichen Begegnungen beider auf der Giudecca mit Spazierrundgängen besonderer Art, bei denen die Glockentöne von San Marco durch die Nebelschwaden herüberzogen. Aus dem Gedenkstück auf den Tod von Boulez[aut]Boulez, Pierre und aus den Memorials auf Nono[aut]Nono, Luigi spricht insbesondere die Sehnsucht des Komponisten Rihm, dass der einmal stattgefundene Dialog über den Tod hinaus weitergeführt werden möge. So gilt für diese Stücke auf Boulez[aut]Boulez, Pierreund Nono[aut]Nono, Luigi, dass mit jeder Aufführung, in der ihre klangliche Aura aufgerufen wird, zugleich auch sie selbst beim Namen gerufen werden – was Nono[aut]Nono, Luigi betrifft, mit dem Klangfeld um g, dem Tonbuchstaben, der mit dem Kosenamen »Gigi«[aut]Nono, Luigi (Luigi) assoziiert ist. One of the key tenets of Linda Zagzebski’s book " Epistemic Authority" is the Preemption Thesis. It says that, when an agent learns that an epistemic authority believes that p, the rational response for her is to adopt that belief and to replace all of her previous reasons relevant to whether p by the reason that the authority believes that p. I argue that such a “Hobbesian approach” to epistemic authority yields problematic results. This becomes especially virulent when we apply (...) Preemption to cases in which the agent and the authority share their belief, maybe even for the same reasons, or in which both have either a positive or a negative graded doxastic attitude toward a given proposition. As an alternative I propose a “Socratic account”, according to which the authority will not only motivate us to adopt her belief, but also provide us with higher-order reasons for re-assigning our own considerations their proper place in the web of reasons for and against the view in question. Jäger, G., Fixed points in Peano arithmetic with ordinals, Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 60 119-132. This paper deals with some proof-theoretic aspects of fixed point theories over Peano arithmetic with ordinals. It studies three such theories which differ in the principles which are available for induction on the natural numbers and ordinals. The main result states that there is a natural theory in this framework which is a conservative extension of Peano arithmeti.

According to Fred Dretske's externalist theory of knowledge a subject knows that p if and only if she believes that p and this belief is caused or causally sustained by the information that p. Another famous feature of Dretske's epistemology is his denial that knowledge is closed under known entailment. I argue that, given Dretske's construal of information, he is in fact committed to the view that both information and knowledge are closed under known entailment. Hence, if it is true (...) that, as Dretske also believes, accepting closure leads to skepticism, he must either embrace skepticism or abandon his information theory of knowledge. (shrink)

This paper expounds that besides the well-known spatio-temporal problem there is a causal problem of entanglement: even when one neglects spatio-temporal constraints, the peculiar statistics of EPR/B experiment is inconsistent with usual principles of causal explanation as stated by the theory of causal Bayes nets. The conflict amounts to a dilemma that either there are uncaused correlations or there are caused independences . I argue that the central ideas of causal explanations can be saved if one accepts the latter horn (...) and explains the unfaithful independences by a stable fine-tuning of the causal parameters. This paper explores the phenomenon of meta-emotions. Meta-emotions are emotions people have about their own emotions. We analyze the intentional structure of meta-emotions and show how psychological findings support our account. Acknowledgement of meta-emotions can elucidate a number of important issues in the philosophy of mind and, more specifically, the philosophy and psychology of emotions. Among them are (allegedly) ambivalent or paradoxical emotions, emotional communication, emotional self-regulation, privileged access failure for repressed emotions, and survivor guilt.

Gärdenfors (Conceptual spaces, 2000) argues that the semantic domains that natural language deals with have a geometrical structure. He gives evidence that simple natural language adjectives usually denote natural properties, where a natural property is a convex region of such a “conceptual space.” In this paper I will show that this feature of natural categories need not be stipulated as basic. In fact, it can be shown to be the result of evolutionary dynamics of communicative strategies under very general assumptions.
