Classical (Bayesian) probability (CP) theory has led to an influential research tradition for modeling cognitive processes. Cognitive scientists have been trained to work with CP principles for so long that it is hard even to imagine alternative ways to formalize probabilities. However, in physics, quantum probability (QP) theory has been the dominant probabilistic approach for nearly 100 years. Could QP theory provide us with any advantages in cognitive modeling as well? Note first that both CP and QP theory share the (...) fundamental assumption that it is possible to model cognition on the basis of formal, probabilistic principles. But why consider a QP approach? The answers are that (1) there are many well-established empirical findings (e.g., from the influential Tversky, Kahneman research tradition) that are hard to reconcile with CP principles; and (2) these same findings have natural and straightforward explanations with quantum principles. In QP theory, probabilistic assessment is often strongly context- and order-dependent, individual states can be superposition states (that are impossible to associate with specific values), and composite systems can be entangled (they cannot be decomposed into their subsystems). All these characteristics appear perplexing from a classical perspective. However, our thesis is that they provide a more accurate and powerful account of certain cognitive processes. We first introduce QP theory and illustrate its application with psychological examples. We then review empirical findings that motivate the use of quantum theory in cognitive theory, but also discuss ways in which QP and CP theories converge. Finally, we consider the implications of a QP theory approach to cognition for human rationality. (shrink)

What aspects of the data from studies of acquired category- specific impairments are relevant to theories of knowledge representation? Discussion in the target article focuses on the living/nonliving dichotomy. However, many case studies reveal considerably more complex patterns of impaired and preserved performance that undermine this distinction. We consider this evidence and discuss its implications for theories of knowledge representation.

Understanding cognitive processes with a formal framework necessitates some limited, internal prescriptive normativism. This is because it is not possible to endorse the psychological relevance of some axioms in a formal framework, but reject that of others. The empirical challenge then becomes identifying the remit of different formal frameworks, an objective consistent with the descriptivism Elqayam & Evans (E&E) advocate.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Quantum Interaction, QI 2016, held in San Francisco, CA, USA, in July 2016. The 21 papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 39 submissions. We address the problem of predicting how people will spontaneously divide into groups a set of novel items. This is a process akin to perceptual organization. We therefore employ the simplicity principle from perceptual organization to propose a simplicity model of unconstrained spontaneous grouping. The simplicity model predicts that people would prefer the categories for a set of novel items that provide the simplest encoding of these items. Classification predictions are derived from the model without information either about the number (...) of categories sought or information about the distributional properties of the objects to be classified. These features of the simplicity model distinguish it from other models in unsupervised categorization (where, for example, the number of categories sought is determined via a free parameter), and we discuss how these computational differences are related to differences in modeling objectives. The predictions of the simplicity model are validated in four experiments. We also discuss the significance of simplicity in cognitive modeling more generally. (shrink)

The distinction between rules and similarity is central to our understanding of much of cognitive psychology. Two aspects of existing research have motivated the present work. First, in different cognitive psychology areas we typically see different conceptions of rules and similarity; for example, rules in language appear to be of a different kind compared to rules in categorization. Second, rules processes are typically modeled as separate from similarity ones; for example, in a learning experiment, rules and similarity influences would be (...) described on the basis of separate models. In the present article, I assume that the rules versus similarity distinction can be understood in the same way in learning, reasoning, categorization, and language, and that a unified model for rules and similarity is appropriate. A rules process is considered to be a similarity one where only a single or a small subset of an object's properties are involved. Hence, rules and overall similarity operations are extremes in a single continuum of similarity operations. It is argued that this viewpoint allows adequate coverage of theory and empirical findings in learning, reasoning, categorization, and language, and also a reassessment of the objectives in research on rules versus similarity. The attempt to employ quantum principles for modeling cognition has enabled the introduction of several new concepts in psychology, such as the uncertainty principle, incompatibility, entanglement, and superposition. For many commentators, this is an exciting opportunity to question existing formal frameworks (notably classical probability theory) and explore what is to be gained by employing these novel conceptual tools. This is not to say that major empirical challenges are not there. For example, can we definitely prove the necessity for quantum, as (...) opposed to classical, models? Can the distinction between compatibility and incompatibility inform our understanding of differences between human and nonhuman cognition? Are quantum models less constrained than classical ones? Does incompatibility arise as a limitation, to avoid the requirements from the principle of unicity, or is it an inherent (or essential?) characteristic of intelligent thought? For everyday judgments, do quantum principles allow more accurate prediction than classical ones? Some questions can be confidently addressed within existing quantum models. A definitive resolution of others will have to anticipate further work. What is clear is that the consideration of quantum cognitive models has enabled a new focus on a range of debates about fundamental aspects of cognition. (shrink)

Shepard's theoretical analysis of generalization is assumed to enable an objective measure of the relation between objects, an assumption taken on board by Tenenbaum & Griffiths. I argue that context effects apply to generalization in the same way as they apply to similarity. Thus, the need to extend Shepard's formalism in a way that incorporates context effects should be acknowledged. [Shepard; Tenenbaum & Griffiths].

Critical (necessary or sufficient) features in categorisation have a long history, but the empirical evidence makes their existence questionable. Nevertheless, there are some cases that suggest critical feature effects. The purpose of the present work is to offer some insight into why classification decisions might misleadingly appear as if they involve critical features. Utilising Tversky's (1977) contrast model of similarity, we suggest that when an object has a sparser representation, changing any of its features is more likely to lead to (...) a change in identity than it would in objects that have richer representations. Experiment 1 provides a basic test of this suggestion with artificial stimuli, whereby objects with a rich or a sparse representation were transformed by changing one of their features. As expected, we observed more identity judgements in the former case. Experiment 2 further confirms our hypothesis, with realistic stimuli, by assuming that superordinate categories have sparser representations than subordinate ones. These results offer some insight into the way feature changes may or may not lead to identity changes in classification decisions. (shrink)

We provide additional support for Cowan's claim that short term memory (STM) involves a range of 3–5 tokens, on the basis of language correlational analyses. If language is at least partly learned, linguistic dependency structure should reflect properties of the cognitive components mediating learning; one such component is STM. In this view, the range over which statistical regularity extends in ordinary text would be suggestive of STM span. Our analyses of eight languages are consistent with STM span being about four (...) chunks. (shrink)

This response to the open peer commentary discusses what should be the appropriate explanatory scope of a rules versus similarity proposal and accordingly evaluates the Rules versus Similarity one. Additionally, coherence, goals, and commitment are presented as inferential notions, fully consistent with the Rules versus Similarity distinction, that allow us to predict when Rules would be preferred to Similarity.

The term “vagueness” describes a property of natural concepts, which normally have fuzzy boundaries, admit borderline cases, and are susceptible to Zeno's sorites paradox. We will discuss the psychology of vagueness, especially experiments investigating the judgment of borderline cases and contradictions. In the theoretical part, we will propose a probabilistic model that describes the quantitative characteristics of the experimental finding and extends Alxatib's and Pelletier's () theoretical analysis. The model is based on a Hopfield network for predicting truth values. Powerful (...) as this classical perspective is, we show that it falls short of providing an adequate coverage of the relevant empirical results. In the final part, we will argue that a substantial modification of the analysis put forward by Alxatib and Pelletier and its probabilistic pendant is needed. The proposed modification replaces the standard notion of probabilities by quantum probabilities. The crucial phenomenon of borderline contradictions can be explained then as a quantum interference phenomenon. (shrink)

Recent research on moral dynamics shows that an individual's ethical mind-set moderates the impact of an initial ethical or unethical act on the likelihood of behaving ethically on a subsequent occasion. More specifically, an outcome-based mind-set facilitates Moral Balancing, whereas a rule-based mind-set facilitates Moral Consistency. The objective was to look at the evolution of moral choice across a series of scenarios, that is, to explore if these moral patterns are maintained over time. Since Tversky argued that similarity judgments violate the three metric axioms, asymmetrical similarity judgments have been particularly challenging for standard, geometric models of similarity, such as multidimensional scaling. According to Tversky, asymmetrical similarity judgments are driven by differences in salience or extent of knowledge. However, the notion of salience has been difficult to operationalize, especially for perceptual stimuli for which there are no apparent differences in extent of knowledge. To investigate similarity judgments between perceptual stimuli, across three experiments, we collected (...) data where individuals would rate the similarity of a pair of temporally separated color patches. We identified several violations of symmetry in the empirical results, which the conventional multidimensional scaling model cannot readily capture. Pothos et al. proposed a quantum geometric model of similarity to account for Tversky's findings. In the present work, we extended this model to a more general framework that can be fit to similarity judgments. We fitted several variants of quantum and multidimensional scaling models to the behavioral data and concluded in favor of the quantum approach. Without further modifications of the model, the best-fit quantum model additionally predicted violations of the triangle inequality that we observed in the same data. Overall, by offering a different form of geometric representation, the quantum geometric framework of similarity provides a viable alternative to multidimensional scaling for modeling similarity judgments, while still allowing a convenient, spatial illustration of similarity. Quantum cognition research applies abstract, mathematical principles of quantum theory to inquiries in cognitive science. It differs fundamentally from alternative speculations about quantum brain processes. This topic presents new developments within this research program. In the introduction to this topic, we try to answer three questions: Why apply quantum concepts to human cognition? How is quantum cognitive modeling different from traditional cognitive modeling? What cognitive processes have been modeled using a quantum account? In addition, a brief introduction to quantum probability (...) theory and a concrete example is provided to illustrate how a quantum cognitive model can be developed to explain paradoxical empirical findings in psychological literature. When constrained by limited resources, how do we choose axioms of rationality? The target article relies on Bayesian reasoning that encounter serioustractabilityproblems. We propose another axiomatic foundation: quantum probability theory, which provides for less complex and more comprehensive descriptions. More generally, defining rationality in terms of axiomatic systems misses a key issue: rationality must be defined by humans facing vague information.

The purpose of this study is development of a supporting system for teacher's design of lesson plan. Especially design of lesson plan which relates to the new subject "Information Study" is supported. In this study, we developed a system which generates teaching and learning activity sequences by interlinking lesson's activities corresponding to the various conditions according to the user's input. Because user's input is multiple information, there will be caused contradiction which the system should solve. This multiobjective optimization problem is (...) resolved by Distributed Genetic Algorithms, in which some fitness functions are defined with reference models on lesson, thinking and teaching style. From results of various experiments, effectivity and validity of the proposed methods and reference models were verified; on the other hand, some future works on reference models and evaluation functions were also pointed out. It is important to increase computation efficiency of a system at a low cost while holding the system correct. For this realization, addition of new and efficient equivalent transformation rules, whose correctness is assured, is useful. As long as correct ET rules are added to a correct system, the computation result of the system is always correct. Improvement of rules is promoted further by improvement of data structure.In this paper, we improve data structure by introducing interval variables into the usual (...) term domain and add two correct and efficient ET rules, which are promoted by introduction of interval variables, for member constraints on interval variables. These rules are the candidate elimination rule and the common pattern specialization rule. We show by an experiment that computation efficiency is increased by using these rules. (shrink)

Cet article rassemble le corpus des scènes apolliniennes et dionysiaques du peintre de Pothos, actif dans le dernier tiers du Ve siècle ; ces scènes occupent une place prépondérante dans le répertoire du peintre. L'étude des vases montre que les mêmes schémas peuvent convenir aux deux cycles, tandis que la confrontation avec les œuvres de peintres contemporains met en valeur une certaine originalité.

본 논문은 조선 중기의 문인이자 의병장인 중봉 조헌(重峯 趙憲, 1544-1592)의 시문학을맹자의 항심(恒心) 개념을 중심으로 분석하였다. 그의 문학이 단순한 충절의 표현을 넘어 도덕적 신념과 윤리적 실천을 담고 있음을 탐색하였다. 지금까지의 선행연구가 조헌의 의병 활동과 충절에 초점을 맞춘 데 반해 본 논문에서는항심의 개념을 군주적 항심, 군자적 항심, 개인적 항심으로 설명하고 이를 통해 조헌의 시문학에서 개인의 항심이자 군자의 항심에서 발현되는 도덕적 원칙과 가치관의 지속성을 조명하였다. 특히 조헌의 시문학은 가난과 현실적 고난 속에서도 도덕적 신념을 견지하는 모습을 담고 있으며 자연 속에서의 자족적 삶을 드러냈다. 이는 (...) 부귀에 흔들리지 않는 청빈한 태도를 말해주는 것이다. 즉 사사로운 안위보다는 충절과 의리의 실천 등을 통해 유가적 가치관과 군자의 항심을 형상화한 것으로 이해하였다. 이러한 시적 요소들이 맹자의 항심 개념과 어떻게 연계되는지를 면밀하게 살펴보았으며, 이는 조헌의 문학이 개인의 윤리적 실천을 넘어 사회적 책임과 국가적 역할과도 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 확인하였다. 결론적으로 조헌의 시문학을 항심의 관점에서 재해석함으로써 그의 문학이 단순한 시대적 기록이 아니라 보편적 도덕성과 신념의 상징으로 평가될 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다. Em artigo inédito, Franklin Leopoldo e Silva desenvolve os sentidos da memória na produção da identidade, destacando as relações significativas do presente com o passado e o futuro na construção da história. Desse ponto, o autor acentua o papel das instituições nesse processo – um processo de exercício de poder, no qual se tem, na verdade, a institucionalização do poder – e, dentre elas, em particular a instituição universitária.

이 글은 경을 일종의 명상으로 보고 그 특징을 탐구한 것이다. 경은 여타의 명상들과 마찬가지로 특정 마음상태를 추구하며, 그에 도달하기 위한 방법을 갖추고 있다. 집중과 자각이라는 마음상태와 정좌와 정제엄숙이라는 방법이 그것이다. 명상은 크게 집중명상과 통찰명상으로 분류되는데, 경은 집중(주일무적)을 중시하기도 하지만, 일상생활 속에서의 자각(깨어있음, 상성성)을 아울러 중시한다는 점에서 통찰명상(마음챙김 명상, mindfulness)으로 분류할 수 있을 것이다. 그렇지만 경은 정좌와 호흡에의 의존도가 약하고, 집중과 자각을 목적이 아니라 도덕적 이해와 실천을 위한 수단으로 본다는 점, 그리고 잡념과 망상의 폐해를 지적하면서도 도덕적 사고는 중시한다는 점 등에서 불교명상과 (...) 차별성을 지닌다. 이를 고려하여 이 글에서는 경을 도덕적 마음챙김 명상(moral mindfulness)으로 규정하였다. 이는 다른 명상들에 비해 첫째, 생활과 밀착된 도덕적 문제의 해결을 목적으로 하기 때문에 접근하기가 쉽고, 둘째, 종교 중립적으로 받아들여지기 때문에 한국과 같은 다종교사회에서 공교육에 적용할 때 거부감이 덜할 수 있다는 이점을 지닌다. 비판적 사고 교과는 논리 교과목에 속하는가? 그렇다면 왜 그러한가? 이에 답하려면 무엇보다도 ‘논리’의 의미를 따져 보아야 한다. 이 논문에서 필자는 다음을 주장한다. 첫째, ‘논리’가 무엇인지는 ‘추론’ 개념으로써 이해하고 설명하는 것이 가장 바람직하다. 둘째, 비판적 사고 교과만이 다루는 제3의 논리는 없다. 셋째. 국내의 비판적 사고 교과는 적어도 연역과 귀납의 표준적인 추론 사례들과 그 형식을 다루어야 한다.

현대의 실존주의자들에게 있어서 현대인의 삶의 문제는 관계성의 단절과 믿음의 부재로 나타나고 있다. 특히 키르케고르는 인간과 절대자와의 관계성에 주목하고 있는데, 그에게 있어서 이러한 관계성의 부재는 인간 실존의 근원적인 문제인 ‘불안’으로 나타나고 있다. ‘불안’은 ‘자기규정’ 혹은 ‘자기-정립’의 결여에서 발생하는데, 자기규정은 본질적으로 관계성을 통해서 주어지는 것이다. 인간은 근본적으로 3가지 유형의 관계성을 가지는데, ‘자기와 타자와의 관계’, ‘자기와 자기와의 관계’ 그리고 ‘자기와 절대자와의 관계’이다. 자기규정이 절대자를 전제하지 않고 오직 자기 스스로와의 관계성 속에 이루어지는 것은 ‘소크라테스식 자연종교’에서이며, 절대자-개인의 관계가 진정으로 이루어지는 곳은 곧 그리스도교에서이다. 키르케고르에게 있어서 (...) 인간이란 근원적으로 신성한 것, 영원한 것과 관련된 존재이기 때문에 ‘절대자와 개별자’의 올바른 관계성이 정립이 되지 않고서는 ‘불안’이 해소되지 않는다. 그리고 한 개인과 절대자와의 관계정립이 곧 ‘신앙’을 의미하기에 오직 신앙만이 불안을 완전하게 해소할 수 있는 힘이다. 그렇기 때문에 종교적 차원의 믿음 즉 신앙이란 끊임없이 세속적인 자아를 부정하면서 절대자와의 관계성을 형성해가는 ‘자기초월적 삶의 태도’처럼 나타나고 있다. 이러한 키르케고르의 믿음에 관한 사유는 ‘종교적 인간(Homo religiosus)’의 지평에서 ‘인간이란 무엇인가?’하는 인간학적 질문에 대해 분명한 그리스도교의 답변을 제시하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 21세기 실재론으로의 귀환을 기획하고 있는 유럽의 대표적인 세 철학자, 메이야수, 페라리스, 바스카의 문제의식과 그들의 이론 전개과정을 살펴본다. 세 철학자가 각자 주장하는 실재론의 근원을 좀 더 자세히 분석하고, 각각의 특성을 비판적으로 검토해 보려고 한다. 그들은 근대 이후 서양철학의 근본 문제로 지적해왔던 인간중심주의로부터의 탈피, 또는 인간중심주의의 한계를 극복하고자 한다. 메이야수는 인간의 합리성에서, 페라리스는 인간 경험의 부조리에 대한 직관으로부터, 바스카는 과학적 탐구를 가능하게 하는 근본 원인에 대한 메타적인 추구를 통해 인간중심주의의 한계를 극복하려 한다. 생명공학과 정보통신기술 중심의 과학적 진보는 인간의 정체성과 세계에 (...) 대한 인간의 이해를 재해석하게 만든다. 이러한 상황 속에서 21세기 유럽 실재론자들의 탐구는 새로운 시대를 준비하는 인간의 지성사적 노력에 하나의 의미있는 도전으로 기록될 것이다. 이 글은 들뢰즈의 개념인 사건과 되기가 연속적인 과정의 운동임을 제시하고 그것이 우리 삶에 어떻게 적용되어 “뿔이 달린 문제” 니체, 『비극의 탄생』, 박찬국 역, (아카넷, 2007), 17면. “논리적 딜레마, 여하튼 새로운 문제” 를 해결하는지 드러내는 데 있다. 주지하듯이 모든 철학은 개념에 의한 사변적 방법들이 우리에게 체화되어 실천적 활동으로 나아갈 때 소용성을 갖는다. 그러나 철학은 여전히 빈틈없이 구사된 추상적 사유 체계와 동행하며 우리가 당면한 일상적인 문제조차 해결해 오지 못한 측면이 있다. 이 측면에서 사건과 되기를 보면 이론적 탐색은 조밀히 성취되었지만 삶의 문제와 직결된 (...) 분석 사례를 찾기란 쉽지 않다. 그래서인지 두 개념으로 주어진 문제를 풀려고 할 때 ‘어떻게’라는 물음이 앞서게 된다. 현실과 철학 사이의 괴리로 인해 주어진 문제에 대한 해결 방식이 제대로 도출되지 않는 것이다. 되풀이된 지적이지만 현실을 외면한 철학의 상(像)은 무의미한 추상으로 미끄러지기 십상이다. 만일 철학이 공허한 이론 체계에 갇혀 직면한 삶의 문제를 해결하는 무기가 되지 못한다면 과연 무엇인가? 그렇다면 철학이 현실을 살아가는 우리에게 왜 요구되는지, 구체적인 삶과 연동하여 말할 수 있는 역할도 필요하지 않을까? 던져진 물음을 사건과 되기에 투영해 풀어가는 것이 이 글의 요지이다. 본고는 일상에서의 죽음 개념이 갖는 오류와 그것에서 비롯될 수 있는 판단에 대한 경계에서 비롯됐다. 이에 필자는 죽음 개념에 대한 보다 비판적인 검토와 그것의 형이상학적 지위에 대한 재고를 역설하고자 했다. 필자는 죽음 개념이 하나의 순수 지성 개념으로서 사용되고 있는 문제점을 발견해냈고, 아울러 그것이 이성의 보편화하려는 본성과 함께 발생한다는 것을 해명하려 했다. 죽음 개념에 대한 필자의 이와 같은 비판은 결국 죽음이 칸트가 말한 선험적 도식으로 제한되어야 한다는 주장으로 귀결되었다. 칸트는 도식이 상상력의 소산이라는 것을 분명히 했다. 따라서 가상인 죽음의 표상은 논리적으로 삶의 반대 (...) 지위를 가질 수 없다. 논리적인 개념은 언제나 양가적이기 때문에 철저하게 재고되지 않은 공허한 개념의 확장은 부정적인 판단으로 귀결될 수 있고, 이념의 실천적 역할을 고려했을 때 그러한 부정적 판단이 불러올 사태는 결코 단순한 염려의 차원에서 마무리되어서는 안 된다. 칸트의 비판철학이 추구한 궁극 목적은 초자연적으로 쓰이는 지성과 이성의 환상을 적발하고, 형식에 부합하는 것만으로 초자연계까지 확장을 시도하려는 이성을 경계하여 순수한 지성을 비판하고 보호하는 것이었다. 그래서 필자는 칸트 비판철학의 이런 정신에 기초하여 죽음이 실재의 지위를 갖는 것처럼 오류 추리되어 삶의 표상에 대한 논리적 반대 항으로 작용하는 것을 제한하고자 한다. 이렇게 함으로써 이 글은 물자체로서의 죽음이 결코 인식될 수 없음을 분명히 하고자 하며, 아울러 이로부터 우리가 죽음에 관해 가질 수 있는 환상을 제거하고자 한다. 유교문화권에 있어서 樂은 禮와 함께 정치, 예술, 교육 등을 포함한 문화 전반을 포괄하는 단어로 사용되어 왔다. 뿐만 아니라 인간의 性情 문제, 中和의 문제, 誠敬의 문제와 결부되어, 인간의 도덕성을 규정하고 배양시키는 기재로 설명되어 왔다. 또한 天道와 人道를 융합시키고, 인간사회와 자연의 질서를 화합시키는 개념으로도 사용되어 왔고, 역대 帝王들의 善政을 판가름하는 儒家적 기준으로 활용되어 왔다. 따라서 樂은 禮와 함께 儒家적 이상사회를 건립하기 위해서 반드시 확립해야만 하는 중요 관념으로 작용해왔다. 이와 같은 樂의 작용, 효과, 특징 등에 대한 논의를 樂論이라고 부른다. 그러나 樂이라는 개념은 禮와 (...) 결부되어 있고, 본래부터 禮와 樂 사이에 명확한 구분이 존재하지 않았다. 『荀子』의 「樂論」편이 성립되기 이전, 先秦儒家의 문헌 속에는 樂에 대한 독립된 논의는 찾아보기 힘들다. 『荀子』 또한 禮를 중심으로 논의하고 있으며, 樂을 禮 속에 포함시켜 논의하는 것이 대부분이다. 하지만 「樂論」편을 별도로 편성함으로써, 『荀子』에서는 최초로 樂에 대한 독립적인 논의가 기술되어 있다. 뿐만 아니라 『荀子』 이전의 문헌들에서는 禮樂과 인간의 心性의 관련성에 대한 언급을 기록하고 있지만, 心性에 초점을 둠으로써 樂의 작용성에 대한 언급은 거의 없다. 『荀子』에는 心性과의 관계성뿐만 아니라, 樂이 미치는 영향에 대해서도 이론을 정립하고 있다. 그리고 「樂論」편의 내용은 『禮記』 「樂記」편에 수용되어, 樂에 대한 儒家의 전통 관념으로 확립하게 된다. 따라서 『荀子』 「樂論」은 樂 개념을 禮와 구분하여, 樂의 기능과 특징 등을 논의한 현존하는 최초의 문헌이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 儒家思想 내에서의 樂論을 형성하는데 절대적인 영향력을 행사한 문헌이라고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 先秦儒家의 樂論을 정립시킨 것은 『荀子』이며, 『荀子』의 「樂論」편의 기록은 儒家 樂論의 기반을 마련하였다고 추론할 수 있다. 송대의 주자와 명대의 왕양명은 송명이학을 대표하는 인물이다. 두 거인들은 똑같이 유가를 반석에 세운 맹장들이면서도 둘 사이에는 ‘공통과 차이’가 동시에 존재한다. 바로 求聖之學이라는 목표를 공유하면서도 실현 방법으로 표방한 ‘性卽理’와 ‘心卽理’교법의 차이다. 구체적으로 표현하면, 주자가 넘어야 할 산은 출세적인 선불교였고 양명이 건너야 할 바다는 功利化 한 주자학이었다. 그리하여 주자는 性을 통해 ‘보편도덕’을 정립하였고 양명은 良知를 통해 ‘도덕주체’를 세웠다. 본 논문에서는 이상의 선행 이해를 전제하고 올바른 양명학 이해를 돕기 위해 3가지 주제를 논하였다. 첫째, 양명의 미발공부에 대한 견해. 둘째, 치양지에서 양지의 주재성에 관한 문제. (...) 셋째, 양지의 주관성에 대한 해명이다. 구체적으로 말하면, 첫째, 주자학에 대한 양명의 비판은 “즉물궁리”와 “미발존양”으로 정리될 수 있다. 주자는 보편도덕의 확립을 위해 “즉물궁리”를 주장했지만 양명은 도덕주체 확립을 위해 “성의”를 주장한다. 또한 주자는 근본 있는 공부를 세우기 위해 미발존양을 내세우지만 양명은 치양지를 제시하면서 굳이 미발과 이발로 나눌 필요가 없고 잘못하면 단멸선정의 공부가 필요하다는 오해를 살 소지가 있다고 경계한다. 둘째, 양명이 주장한 치양지는 양지의 명령에 순종하여 본연의 양지를 회복하는 것이다. 그러나 일반 연구자들이 쉽게 범하는 실수는 양지 본체, 치양지 공부라는 도식에 착안하여 치양지는 공부를 통해 양지를 회복하는 것이라고 하면서 양지의 주재성을 인정하지 않는 것이다. 셋째, 치양지는 개인의 마음에 근본 하기 때문에 도덕행위의 객관타당성을 담보하지 못하고 주관적일 수밖에 없다는 비판이 가능한데 이는 양명이 제시한 “진성측달”에 대한 심도 있는 이해를 통해 변론이 가능하다.
