the objective of this paper is, on the one hand, to bring to light the Nietzschean characterization of the body, removing its “naturalness” and objectivity, launching it into the historical becoming of moral (evaluative) disputes, as well as deconstructing its individual unity by bringing the social webs that produce it from the organization of an original multiplicity that, however, continue to stalk the supposed unity consolidated in the “individual” are brought to the surface. For each integer n ≥ 2, MVn denotes the variety of MV-algebras generated by the MV-chain with n elements. Using these representations, maximal subalgebras of algebras in MVn are characterized, and it is shown that proper subalgebras are intersection of maximal subalgebras. This paper uses a sample of 1243 international firms for the period 2013–2017 to analyse the effect that a greater presence of women in management teams has on business behaviour in relation to labour and human rights, and the mediating role of improved performance in these rights on corporate transparency. The results show that gender diversity in management teams is positively associated with performance in relation to labour and human rights, and that such a performance acts as a mediating factor (...) by fostering a higher disclosure of information regarding these issues. The findings therefore seem to indicate that the presence of women in management teams acts as a driving force for enhanced social responsibility. (shrink)

O caráter polêmico e a relevância da obra de David Hume são indisputáveis. Neste livro, discute-se a visão do filósofo sobre a teoria do conhecimento e da ciência, além de tópicos mais particulares, mas nem por isso menos cruciais, como sua crítica ao finalismo, sua relevância para a leitura de Freud e a tese humeana, retomada por Quine, da continuidade entre conhecimento comum e teórico.

The main goals of this study were, to test the motivational determinants of athletes perceived effort in football considering the four-stage motivational sequence at the contextual level proposed by Hierarchical Model of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation: task-involving, basic psychological needs, self-determined motivation and perceived effort. The multi-group analysis across different age-groups (U15, U17, U19, U21 years) and mediation role of basic psychological needs and self-determined motivation on the task-involving climate and the perceived effort were also analysed. Two independent samples of (...) male football athletes (N= 403, N= 403), aged 13-20 were enrolled in this study. The results demonstrated that structural model provided a good fit to data for all samples under analysis, and was invariant across U17, U19, and U21. However, it was not invariant across U15 and U17, U19 and U21. Additionally, in the results from the mediation analysis, there were significant indirect effects in all samples, supporting theoretical by self-determination theory assumptions, reinforcing the importance of basic psychological needs satisfaction and behavioral regulation in the relation in analysis. The results allow concluding that when coaches promote a task-involving climate, the basic psychological needs satisfaction of athletes improves. This climate will facilitate the regulation of their behaviors towards more autonomous forms of motivation, with positive results in the perceived effort of the athletes. (shrink)

This article proposes an interpretation of Friedrich Nietzsche's thought in which morality is understood as a "semiotics of affects"—that is, as a symbolic expression of specific pulsional configurations historically consolidated into values. Based on the genealogical method developed by Nietzsche, the investigation interprets moral values not through their normative validity, but through their origin, function, and effects on forms of life. The analysis follows a conceptual-philosophical approach centered on key texts such as On the Genealogy of Morality, Beyond Good and (...) Evil, and Twilight of the Idols, along with relevant commentaries. The hypothesis is that morality operates as a symptom of affective organization, expressed in practices of obedience, memory, and guilt, which culminate in the emergence of the "moral individual." The typology of master morality and slave morality serves as a diagnostic tool for assessing the ways in which different forms of life affirm or negate vital potency. The article aims to emphasize that Nietzsche does not aim to establish a new morality, but interprets morality as a symbolic language of affections and a historical practice of organizing life. This article proposes a philosophical-political approach to the body based on the contributions of Nietzsche, Foucault, and Deleuze & Guattari, aiming to investigate the processes of subjectivation, domination, and the production of difference in contemporary societies. Starting from a critique of the traditional conception of politics centered on institutions and rational decisions, it argues that the body and the dimension of desire constitute fundamental instances of political life. Through a conceptual and genealogical analysis, the article explores the ways in which (...) bodies are organized, normalized, and captured by discursive practices, knowledges, and institutions, while also examining how they harbor forces of resistance, creation, and transformation. By highlighting the micropolitical dimension of social relations, the text seeks to contribute to a political understanding that integrates the unconscious, affects, and difference as key operators in the production of ways of life and subjectivities. Russell's The Problems of Philosophy tries to establish a new theory of induction, at the same time that Hume is there accused of an irrational/ scepticism about induction". But a careful analysis of the theory of knowledge explicitly acknowledged by Hume reveals that, contrary to the standard interpretation in the XXth century, possibly influenced by Russell, Hume deals exclusively with causal inference (which he never classifies as "causal induction", although now we are entitled to do so), never with inductive inference (...) in general, mainly generalizations about sensible qualities of objects ( whether, e.g., "all crows are black" or not is not among Hume's concerns). Russell's theories are thus only false alternatives to Hume's, in (1912) or in his (1948). (shrink)

Here, an epidemiological model considering pro and anti-vaccination groups is proposed and analyzed. In this model, susceptible individuals can migrate between these two groups due to the influence of false and true news about safety and efficacy of vaccines. From this model, written as a set of three ordinary differential equations, analytical expressions for the disease-free steady state, the endemic steady state, and the basic reproduction number are derived. It is analytically shown that low vaccination rate and no influx to (...) the pro-vaccination group have similar impacts on the long-term amount of infected individuals. Numerical simulations are performed with parameter values of the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate the analytical results. The possible relevance of this work is discussed from a public health perspective. (shrink)

O presente artigo visa a elaborar aspectos pertinentes às investigações sobre o corpo empreendidas por Friedrich Nietzsche, sobretudo a partir do que o filósofo denominou como fisiopsicologia, isto é, uma compreensão do corpo em termos de forças, impulsos e afetos, e sobretudo da íntima articulação destes com o pensamento, as sensações e volições. Essa dimensão, que chamaremos de dimensão inconsciente, se refere a uma lógica própria do corpo a medida que sua unidade é remetida a uma série conflituosa de impulsos (...) que o constituem como uma natureza material, mas ao mesmo tempo dinâmica, modificável, plástica e produtora de formas e organizações distintas. Em outras palavras, procuraremos investigar o corpo para além do corpo organicamente estabelecido, ou como instância meramente físico-química, apresentando o corpo como condição de possibilidade de distintos modos de ser, cuja dinâmica própria engendra pensamentos, volições e valores, bem como da possibilidade de percepção destes movimentos (pelo menos de alguma parte deles) proporcionada pelo advento da consciência. Sobretudo, queremos trazer à tona a relação entre esta dimensão inconsciente e a consciência que temos de nós mesmos, pois isto poderia ampliar a capacidade humana de dar ouvidos ao que se passa no corpo sem negá-lo ou censurá-lo. Tommaso Campanella, in The City of the Sun, a utopian text written in 1602, transfers his political philosophy to fiction. A priest, named “Metaphysician” or “Hoh,” assisted by a triumvirate – Pon (Power), Sin (Wisdom) and Mor (Love) – governs a republic of wise men, in which religion and politics form a single unit. The Calabrian philosopher has always defended the union of all people under the aegis of a single monarch, who holds laic and ecclesiastical powers. Machiavelli defends the (...) notion that it is men’s duty to build and to conduct state politics, and that only concrete reality can provide its characteristics and principles. On the other hand, Campanella believes that the precepts by which men must be ruled can be found in nature. Therefore, a community will be happier if it exists in a closer relationship with nature. The main purpose of this communication lies in an examination of The City of the Sun, considering these two points of view. (shrink)

Co‐option of the eye developmental gene regulatory network may have led to the appearance of novel functional traits on the wings of flies and butterflies. The first trait is a recently described wing organ in a species of extinct midge resembling the outer layers of the midge's own compound eye. The second trait is red pigment patches on Heliconius butterfly wings connected to the expression of an eye selector gene, optix. These examples, as well as others, are discussed regarding the (...) type of empirical evidence and burden of proof that have been used to infer gene network co‐option underlying the origin of novel traits. A conceptual framework describing increasing confidence in inference of network co‐option is proposed. Novel research directions to facilitate inference of network co‐option are also highlighted, especially in cases where the pre‐existent and novel traits do not resemble each other. (shrink)

This article’s assumption is that ordinary aesthetics does not necessarily imply a distancing from art and artists; rather, it can benefit from the input of creators when they use everyday scenes or objects as their theme. This approach focuses on the practice of twentieth-century Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, who depicted compositions of common objects such as bottles, jars, and vases. Through Morandi’s meditative and artistic search, these objects are given value and aesthetic elevation in his paintings. Thomas Leddy’s aesthetics of (...) everyday life will also be called upon in my analysis, insofar as the author recognizes a continuity between the ordinary and the extraordinary, through auratic experiences. If Morandi discovers the extraordinary in the trivial, this is achieved through a gradual process of selection regarding the objects he favoured, which allows for the interaction of various levels of aesthetic intensity. Morandi’s objects and models and their preparation suggest a circulation between aesthetic degrees that, in turn, suggests a timeless “language of things” fixed through the discourse of the paintings. Along these lines, it will be necessary to address the enchantment related to common things, a mesmerizing presence of which we became more aware through Morandi compositions. (shrink)

Purpose This paper critically analyses Portuguese public policies for gender equality in the digital sphere (2017-2025) and documents gender inequality trends in the sector, as crucial ethical and societal dimensions of technologies. This paper aims to analyse the initial integration and later weakening of gender equality in digital transformation policies. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a mixed-methods design, drawing on empirical evidence from the project Women4Digital − Gender Equality in the Digital Transition in Portugal: what place for Women? It combines systematic (...) mapping and qualitative document analysis of policy frameworks with a quantitative analysis of gender inequalities trends in ICT employment, based on administrative linked employer-employee data set (2007-2023), and qualitative data gathered from two focus groups. Findings Quantitative evidence confirms sizeable structural inequalities: women represent only around 21% of employment in ICT occupations, are markedly underrepresented in executive roles, and face more precarious working conditions. Policy cycles (2017-2025) peaked in 2021 by embedding EU funding conditionalities for structural change, followed by an institutional slowdown characterised by a shift back towards reinforcing symbolic “fix the women” approaches. Critical governance gaps persist: major investments are gender-blind, and new regulatory regimes risk undermining ethical enforcement against gendered online harms. Originality/value By framing digital regulation as a gendered institutional site, this paper brings feminist policy analysis into direct dialogue with digital ethics. It provides an original, longitudinal account of gender inequality trends that distinguishes ICT occupations from ICT-sector firms, while interrogating whether EU-driven digital governance architectures enable or constrain an inclusive, ethical and gender-just digital transformation. In doing so, it also shows how ethical and gender-blind design persists in fast-growing policy domains such as platform regulation, AI governance and cybersecurity. (shrink)

The paper aims to show how argumentative uses of cultural keywords can help to recover shared values and beliefs of a certain community. To follow the path from text to culture, a specific corpus will be collected to verify if interactivity can be considered a cultural keyword and to find out cultural values it evokes. Also, the analysis of argumentative moves will reveal the basis on which the discourse on the investigated keyword is founded. The proposed methodology is supposed to (...) shed light on the relation between text and culture by helping to reconstruct, to some extent, the cultural common ground of a given community in regard to a certain keyword. The present work is completely grounded in the methodology of textual analysis as present in buddhist studies and has three essential pretentions. The first one is to discuss the relationship between the conceptual and non-conceptual dimensions of buddhist practice from the standpoint of the concept of the three wisdoms. The second one is to define a central standpoint able to judge the difference between buddhist practice proper and the therapeutic and scientific approaches to meditation. Neste artigo, procura-se enquadrar na perspetiva da retórica e da argumentação a problemática do chamado “negacionismo” da COVID-19, entendendo-se por um tal conceito não tanto ou simplesmente a rejeição da identificação médica dessa doença, mas, fundamentalmente, quer a negação da sua gravidade e a da sua amplitude pandémica como matéria de saúde pública, quer a negação das medidas adotadas para a combater, de maneira geral, pelas autoridades competentes. As posições defendidas sobre o assunto por uma autoridade médica especializada, mas rotulada (...) e estigmatizada como “negacionista” (Fernando Nobre, médico, ex-Professor catedrático convidado da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa e doutor honoris causa pela mesma Universidade), servem de caso em estudo. A presente reflexão acerca do estado nação burguês (brasileiro) a partir de Claudia Von Braunmühl, buscou identificar, em grandes linhas, as ideias que compõem sua teoria sobre o “estado nação burguês” e relacioná-las ao Brasil. Nessa breve reflexão, constatou-se que, embora sua teoria seja importante para pensar o estado brasileiro, enquanto parte integrante do mercado mundial, ela precisa ser complementada com autores que o pensam a partir de suas especificidades históricas.

Implications of algorithmic mediation can be studied through the artefact itself, peoples’ practices, and the social/political/economical arrangements that affect and are affected by such interactions. Most studies in Academic social media (ASM) focus on one of these elements at a time, either examining design elements or the users’ behaviour on and perceptions of such platforms. We take a multi-faceted approach using affordances as a lens to analyze practices and arrangements traversed by algorithmic mediation. Following our earlier studies that examined the (...) artefact, this study’s aim is to understand how algorithmic mediation in ASM may shape researchers’ perceptions. We conducted online in-depth interviews with show and tell (n = 11) with ASM users from four countries, about their use of ASM. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and the codes were clustered in themes and validated via peer debriefing process. Four themes—related to exposure to content, visibility, ethical or legal infringements, and engagement—are discussed considering implications of datafication and findability. We conclude that algorithmic mediation constructs a narration of the relevant other in ASM, configuring the other as participatory and productive. (shrink)

Este presente artigo tem por objetivo fazer considerações acerca da origem tardia do Corpus Hermeticum, assim como seu possível desenvolvimento, a partir do caldo multicultural e das similaridades religiosas entre as escolas filosóficas da Grécia clássica e helenística, em específico por influência direta de Pitágoras e de Platão, por meio de Plutarco, da escola eclética e de certa influência indireta das escolas do oriente, em específico a egípcia, na tentativa de revelar a possível, mas bem provável, origem posterior ao séc (...) I dos escritos conhecidos como Corpus Hermeticum. Essa conjunção de escolas de pensamento, podem ter tido o efeito em comum e uma possível responsabilidade de formarem, ou até mesmo de servirem como agente acelerador, do pensamento filosófico grego pré-socrático, que irá influir diretamente no pensamento clássico e helenístico. In the last two decades, we have seen an increasing display of gestures and language of forgiveness in the public realm. Forgiveness has become a secular phenomenon. What do we mean by forgiveness? What is the role of forgiveness in the public place? Does it have the capacity to enhance the political life and well-being of a community? In The Human Condition, first published in 1958, Hannah Arendt offers an unapparelled reading of political forgiveness, described as a quintessential human faculty (...) for the revitalization of the public and political realm. This paper seeks to investigate the implications of Arendt’s understanding of action and forgiveness for the life of the polis, in particular the promotion of a more hospitable public space. Situated within human capacity to act and to love the other in their uniqueness and despite their trespasses and failures, forgiveness contributes, as this paper seeks to demonstrate, to the enhancement of the political sphere by opening this space to “new beginnings.”. Robert Jervis's System Effects was published just as systems thinking began to decline among political scientists, who were adopting increasingly strict standards of causal identification, privileging experimental and large-N studies. Many politically consequential system effects are not amenable to research designs that meet these standards, yet they must nonetheless be studied if the most important questions of international politics are to be answered. For example, if nuclear weapons are considered in light of their effect on the international system as a (...) whole, it becomes clear that they have obviated the need for a global balance of power by allowing states to counterbalance threats by acquiring nuclear weapons rather than investing in massive conventional balancing efforts. Similarly, systems thinking should inform our understanding of the impact of a “unipolar power” such as the United States, which has enjoyed an overwhelming preponderance of conventional military power since the fall of the Berlin Wall. A unipolar power is likely to become involved in frequent conflicts because it is not restrained by the presence of a peer competitor. (shrink)

The associationist interpretation of Hume's account of causal belief is criticized. The origin of this mistaken interpretation is explained. The difference between Hume's views in the Treatise of Human Nature and in An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding is examined.

Civil disobedience is a form of protest consisting in an act contrary to law, whose aim is to bring about a change in laws or policies deemed unjust. In the traditional Western philosophical debate, civil disobedience was mainly discussed and justified within the boundaries of a democratic regime. John Rawls’ theory of civil disobedience is explicitly based on this liberal assumption. He conceptualises civil disobedience as a public, nonviolent, conscientious and political breach of the law, only appropriate to nearly just (...) societies, hence to democratic regimes. This article intends to question Rawls’ premise by considering civil disobedience from a different perspective: when it is undertaken outside of a nearly just framework, precisely in not fully democratic contexts, such as the so-called “anocracies”, regimes that mix democratic and autocratic traits. The emblematic case of Sudan’s most recent actions of civil disobedience is examined to argue that, contrary to the liberal conceptualisation, civil disobedience does have a role and appropriateness in frameworks of this kind, where the aim is not only to oppose unjust laws or policies, but also to achieve a broader structural change through rigorously nonviolent forms of political action. Let the individuals of a population be divided into two groups with different personal habits. The core group is associated with health risk behaviors; the non-core group avoids unhealthy activities. Assume that the infected individuals of the core group can spread a contagious disease to the whole population. Also, assume that cure does not confer immunity. Here, an epidemiological model written as a set of ordinary differential equations is proposed to investigate the infection propagation in this population. In the model, (...) migrations between these two groups are allowed; however, the transitions from the non-core group into the core group prevail. These migrations can be either spontaneous or stimulated by social pressure. It is analytically shown that, in the scenario of spontaneous migration, the disease is either naturally eradicated or chronically persists at a constant level. In the scenario of stimulated migration, in addition to eradication and constant persistence, self-sustained oscillations in the number of sick individuals can also be found. These analytical results are illustrated by numerical simulations and discussed from a public health perspective. (shrink)

Uma das formas do poder feminino-africano se manifesta de forma acentuada no campo da espiritualidade, tanto no mundo visível, ou seja, dos vivos, quanto no mundo invisível, o dos mortos. Este artigo faz parte de uma pesquisa em andamento, sobre o poder exercido pelas mulheres africanas e que raras vezes são consideradas ou visibilizadas como formas de poder na contramão de uma vasta literatura em que as mulheres, na sua maioria, são consideradas submissas. O interesse recai sobre práticas de tornar-se (...) djambakus, Balobêru, nganga, Mutombe ou tchimbanda em duas realidades, a guineense e a angolana. A riqueza dos relatos das experiências de uma guineense, moradora de Ziguinchor, Senegal, com foco nas tradições ancestrais para transmitir e explicar o sagrado por intermédio da história oral, reforçam a análise da concepção do lugar destas mulheres no exercício do poder ocultado. O trabalho é de caráter teórico-qualitativo: revisão de literatura, entrevistas e história oral. O recurso da oralidade dialoga com a condição de escassez de documentos escritos sobre curandeiras, djambacus, Balobêru e nganga que se dedicam a curar. Foi entrevistada uma djambakus que transita entre Guiné-Bissau e Senegal. Os resultados apontam para a potência de mulheres na prática sagrada de cura pelo encontro de conhecimentos populares, saberes africanos tradicionais, ancestrais e do bem-estar de suas comunidades ou tabancas. Hume fully recognised, and partially explained, the role of inductions from single experiments in human knowledge - something his Scottish critics, and some more recent ones, failed to understand. Those inferences, he maintains, depend on the use of a Newtonian rule and the removal of superfluous circumstances. But that rule is not sufficient, and Hume never stated the exact conditions of this removal. We should distinguish between survey and experience in his philosophy, to understand how experience of conjunctions where inductive (...) knowledge has accumulated, in uniform or regular classes or sets of phenomena, may produce cognitive situations when once is enough - without relying on any mysterious innate principles.
