Precision targeting of specific white matter bundles that traverse the subcallosal cingulate has been linked to efficacy of deep brain stimulation for treatment resistant depression. Methods to confirm optimal target engagement in this heterogenous region are now critical to establish an objective treatment protocol. As yet unexamined are the time-frequency features of the SCC evoked potential, including spectral power and phase-clustering. We examined these spectral features—evoked power and phase clustering—in a sample of TRD patients with implanted SCC stimulators. Electroencephalogram was (...) recorded during wakeful rest. Location of electrical stimulation in the SCC target region was the experimental manipulation. EEG was analyzed at the surface level with an average reference for a cluster of frontal sensors and at a time window identified by prior study. Morlet wavelets generated indices of evoked power and inter-trial phase clustering. Enhanced phase clustering at theta frequency was observed in every subject and was significantly correlated with SCC-EP magnitude, but only during left SCC stimulation. Stimulation to dorsal SCC evinced stronger phase clustering than ventral SCC. There was a weak correlation between phase clustering and white matter density. An increase in evoked delta power was also coincident with SCC-EP, but was less consistent across participants. DBS evoked time-frequency features index mm-scale changes to the location of stimulation in the SCC target region and correlate with structural characteristics implicated in treatment optimization. Results also imply a shared generative mechanism between evoked potentials evinced by electrical stimulation and evoked potentials evinced by auditory/visual stimuli and behavioral tasks. Understanding how current injection impacts downstream cortical activity is essential to building new technologies that adapt treatment parameters to individual differences in neurophysiology. In this study I investigate the metaphysical, logical, and epistemological tensions generated by the classical doctrine of transubstantiation, focusing especially on the Thomistic claim that in the Eucharist the sensible accidents of bread and wine remain without their natural subject. I identify this configuration as the “inverse” of divine simplicity whereas God is “a substance without accidents,” the Eucharist presents “accidents without a subject.” I further examine whether the classical framework of substance and accident, act and potency, immutability and simplicity (...) can coherently sustain such an inversion or whether it requires conceptual exceptions that exceed the limits of metaphysical explanation. Methodologically, the study employs comparative metaphysics, textual‑historical analysis of patristic and scholastic sources, and cross‑tradition theological comparison (e.g., Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Reformed, and Zwinglian). This is further supplemented by contemporary logical evaluation, scientific‑philosophical critique, and biblical analysis of the sensory, public pattern of miracles in Scripture. These methods allow assessment of both the internal coherence of the Thomistic model and its external plausibility in light of modern metaphysical and empirical expectations. The study also evaluates Aquinas’s proposal that dimensive quantity serves as a metaphysical “placeholder” enabling accidents to persist without a subject. It considers whether this resolves or simply relocates the logical problem, especially when contrasted with biblical miracles that engage the senses in ways the Eucharistic change does not. I further aim to clarify the conceptual architecture of the doctrine and to evaluate its defensibility across philosophical, scientific, and ecumenical contexts. The goals are to produce a clearer account of the commitments required to affirm transubstantiation, the tensions inherent in sustaining accidents without a subject, the comparative strengths of alternative Eucharistic models, and the epistemic reasons the doctrine persists as a “mystery of faith.” Ultimately, I argue that while transubstantiation is internally coherent within its Aristotelian‑Thomistic framework, it remains the most metaphysically demanding model of real presence, and therefore, one whose acceptance depends less on demonstrative reason than on one’s epistemic position toward ecclesial authority, metaphysical realism, and the theological logic of trust. Confessional rigidity between Roman Catholics and Protestants is not adequately explained by doctrinal disagreement alone. This study argues that the persistence and intensity of confessional antagonism arise from a deeper convergence of psychological needs, anthropological patterns, sociological pressures, and theological commitments that shape how individuals and communities hold their beliefs. Fear, insecurity, and unresolved trauma, both individual and collective, often transform doctrinal claims into mechanisms of identity protection rather than instruments of discernment. Through the TAPS framework, together with original analytical (...) constructs such as R.I.G.I.D., S.A.F.E., and the developmental sequence of Fear to Fixation to Ferocity, the analysis demonstrates how ritual, symbol, communal memory, attachment disruptions, and group threat responses interact to produce defensive and inflexible confessional postures. Catholic and Protestant traditions each contain healthy orientations that can become distorted under conditions of perceived threat, particularly when trauma constricts cognitive and emotional flexibility. The study concludes that spiritual maturity, characterized by grounded identity, humility, interpretive charity, and ecumenical openness, provides a constructive path toward healing and enables believers to move from defensive identity fortressing toward a more integrated, compassionate, and dialogical form of Christian engagement. In this chapter, I argue that subjective character, if it is phenomenologically substantial, conflicts with the transparency of perceptual experience. More specifically, if subjective character accompanies all conscious states, then it should exist in unreflective perceptual states. These states, however, appear transparent and there is no room for self-referential phenomenology on the unreflective level. I end the chapter by considering an empirical argument for the existence of subjective character based on depersonalization, and I argue that the best interpretation of patient (...) reports is consistent with a lack of subjective character. Part of a multi-part series, Revelation and Reason: How Logic Illuminates the Coherence of Theology, this study argues that the Christian doctrine of the Trinity is logically coherent when interpreted through the metaphysical distinctions developed in the patristic and scholastic traditions. Focusing on the claim that God is one in essence and three in persons, the paper contends that the doctrine does not violate the law of non-contradiction, nor does it collapse into tritheism, modalism, or ontological subordination. Instead, its apparent (...) difficulty arises largely from category confusion, semantic imprecision, and the tendency to treat divine being as if it were analogous to creaturely individuality. Drawing on Scripture, classical theology, and selected insights from philosophy, psychology, sociology, and anthropology, the study proposes that Trinitarian doctrine is best understood as a disciplined extension of reason under revelation. The paper first surveys biblical foundations for Trinitarian thought in both the Old and New Testaments, showing how canonical readings of Scripture disclose patterns of divine plurality, relational distinction, and unity. It then examines key theological formulations from the Cappadocian Fathers, Augustine, Aquinas, Karl Rahner, and Karl Barth in order to clarify the distinction between essence and person, the ontological and economic Trinity, eternal generation and spiration, and the relation between divine hiddenness and revelation. Special attention is given to modern objections concerning dependency, subordination, and logical inconsistency. The conclusion maintains that, when articulated with conceptual precision, the doctrine of the Trinity is neither irrational nor contradictory, but rather a coherent theological judgment arising from Scripture, refined through tradition, and capable of rational defense within classical Christian thought. William Dean Howells has long been recognized as the chief spokesman for post-1880s American Realism. Most of his writing appeared in popular magazines, however, and has been lost to us. This collection brings together for the first time his most significant essays about American drama written between 1875 and 1919 and a full bibliography of his writings on drama and theatre. Howells’s essays had a powerful influence on the serious playwrights and theatre practitioners who came of age at the turn of the century, and whose work in turn enabled playwrights like Eugene O’Neill and Susan Glaspell to develop a new realism during the teens. In this book, Bryan Wesley Hall breaks new ground in Kant scholarship, exploring the gap in Kant’s Critical philosophy in relation to his post-Critical work by turning to Kant’s final, unpublished work, the so-called _Opus Postumum._ Although Kant considered this project to be the "keystone" of his philosophical efforts, it has been largely neglected by scholars. Hall argues that only by understanding the _Opus Postumum _can we fully comprehend both Kant’s mature view as well as his Critical project. In (...) letters from 1798, Kant claims to have discovered a "gap" in the Critical philosophy that requires effecting a "transition from the metaphysical foundations of natural science to physics"; unfortunately, Kant does not make clear exactly what this gap is or how the transition is supposed to fill the gap. To resolve these issues, Hall draws on the _Opus Postumum_, arguing that Kant’s transition project can solve certain perennial problems with the Critical philosophy. This volume provides a powerful alternative to all current interpretations of the _Opus Postumum_, arguing that Kant’s transition project is best seen as the post-Critical culmination of his Critical philosophy. Hall carefully examines the deep connections between the _Opus Postumum_ and the view Kant develops in the _Critique of Pure Reason_, to suggest that properly understanding the post-Critical Kant will significantly revise our view of Kant’s Critical period. A controversy rages over the question of how should controversial topics be taught. Recent work has advanced the “epistemic criterion” as the resolution to this controversy. According to the epistemic criterion, a matter should be taught as controversial when contrary views can be entertained on the matter without the views being contrary to reason. When an issue is noncontroversial, according to the epistemic criterion, the correct position can be taught “directively,” with the teacher endorsing that position. When there is a (...) legitimate controversy, the view should be taught “nondirectively,” with the teacher remaining neutral. In response, Bryan Warnick and Spencer Smith argue that the proponents of the epistemic criterion fail to recognize the multidimensional nature of what it means to learn to be rational. Recognizing this complexity undermines the link between the epistemic status of the controversy and directiveness of one's teaching, suggesting more flexibility in how teachers approach controversial issues. It also implies the need for a new category of teaching, which Warnick and Smith call “soft-directive” teaching. (shrink)

Adolescence is a crucial developmental window because it involves elaboration of the self‐concept, the laying down of lifelong autobiographical memories, and the development of emotional resilience during a time of substantial risk for mood problems. Autobiographical memory retrieval plays an important role in depression both in adults (Citationvan Vreeswijk & de Wilde, 2004) and adolescents (Kuyken, Howell, & Dalgleish, 2005; CitationPark, Goodyer, & Teasdale, 2002). This study examined facets of autobiographical memory associated with memory retrieval in never‐depressed and currently (...) depressed adolescents: personal importance, imagery, recency, source monitoring, and field‐observer perspective. Compared with never‐depressed adolescents, adolescents with depression were significantly more likely to retrieve memories from an observer perspective and more recent time period, preferentially rehearsed negative memories and rated their memories as more personally important. Depressed adolescents who reported a history of trauma retrieved more vivid autobiographical memories than depressed adolescents not reporting such a history, had rehearsed them more frequently, and reported more confidence in their veracity.
