The Sunni theological school of Māturīdiyya emphasizes human freedom in making choices and performing acts, particularly in the context of debate about divine omnipotence and human responsibility. This focus on human agency has sparked a resurgence of interest in Māturīdī theology in various parts of the contemporary Muslim world. However, the issue remains complex and challenging, as Māturīdī thought also maintains that God is the Creator of everything that exists in time, including human decisions. This article aims to contextualize and (...) analyse the theory of human action presented in the late Ottoman work Kitāb al-Masāʾil al-khilāfiyya bayna al-Māturīdiyya wa-l-Ashāʿira by Muḥammad b. Walī b. Rasūl al-Qīrshahrī al-Izmīrī (d. 1165/1751). An overview of the development of Sunni kalām (theology) during the Ottoman era shows that al-Qīrshahrī skilfully integrated post-Avicennan philosophical discourses into his argument. In so doing, he refutes Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s (d. 606/1209) famous tarjīḥ argument. This results in the incorporation of the Muʿtazilī concept of the ‘states’ (aḥwāl), rejected by classical Māturīdī theologians but re-examined by later Māturīdī theologians as early as in the fourteenth century. Overall, this theological treatise offers valuable insights into one scholar’s earnest efforts to reconcile religious doctrines with the demands of a premodern society by weaving together diverse elements from the rich tapestry of Islamic intellectual history. The chapter looks at indicative conditionals embedded under quantifiers, with a special emphasis on ‘one-case’ conditionals as in _No query was answered if it came from a doubtful address_. It agrees with earlier assessments that a complete conditional (with antecedent and consequent) is embedded under a quantifier in those constructions, but then proceeds to create a dilemma by showing that we can’t always find the right interpretation for that conditional. Contrary to earlier assessments, Stalnaker’s conditional won’t always do. The chapter (...) concludes that the embedded conditional in the sentence above is a material implication, but the _if_-clause also plays a pragmatic role in restricting the domain of the embedding quantifier. That an appeal to pragmatics should be necessary at all goes with Edgington’s verdict that ‘we do not have a satisfactory general account of sentences with conditional constituents’. (shrink)

In einer Notfallsituation werden in der Regel zuerst lebensrettende Maßnahmen ergriffen und eine Intensivbehandlung eingeleitet. Wenn es in den ersten Tagen keine signifikante Verbesserung mit Wiedererlangung des Bewusstseins gibt, entstehen regelmäßig sehr komplexe Entscheidungssituationen. In der Neurointensivmedizin ist ein zeitlich begrenzter Therapieversuch („time-limited trial“, TLT) ein wichtiges strukturierendes Element in der Behandlungsplanung und -kommunikation, als verbindliche Vereinbarung zwischen dem Behandlungsteam und dem Patienten oder dem gesetzlichen Vertreter über ein Behandlungskonzept für einen (...) definierten Zeitraum. Aufgrund der verlängerten neurologischen Rehabilitationsphase kann die TLT in der Neurointensivmedizin auch Wochen oder Monate dauern. Dies erfordert häufig eine abteilungsübergreifende Kommunikation (Akutversorgung/Rehabilitation/Langzeitpflege), eine Neubewertung und Umsetzung in der Neurointensivmedizin. Die Empfehlungen umfassen die Definition, empirische Belege und Umsetzungsvorschläge für eine TLT für kritisch kranke Patienten in der Neurointensivmedizin. (shrink)

Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, the “binding of Isaac”, already in early Church tradition was discovered as the prototype of the Christian passion story, Abraham figuring as the “type” of God Father, Isaac as the “type” of Christ. The Biblical story which is told in a strongly emotional tone, thus was to find its continuation in a passion story loaded with triggers of emotion. What is less well known is that the story has equally strongly affected the emergence of (...) the third monotheist religion, Islam. Its formative impact on the Qur’anic concepts of sacrifice on the one hand and on the critique of genealogy as a source of authority on the other has until now not been exhaustingly studied. The paper attempts to locate the “passion story of Abraham’s sacrifice” within the Qur’anic development which finally came to rank Abraham as the most significant model of a monotheist believer, a precursor of the Prophet Muhammad. Here, the figure of Abraham at the same time features as a counter-model to the image of Abraham established in Christianity. To blur the image of the emotionally loaded prototype of God Father in the Christian passion story, the Qur’anic Abraham was required to defy any sacrificial pathos (generated by the “un-natural” preference of loyalty toward God over his paternal love) and to perform an act of mere faithfulness – being exculpated from the monstrosity of child sacrifice thanks to his son’s agreement to participate in the act. The ancient battlefield becomes the inner landscape of a modern young man, caught between surrender and self-determination, between walking his own path and moving within invisible lines already drawn.

Cognitive scientists have become increasingly interested in understanding how natural minds represent and reason about possible ways the world could be. However, there is currently little agreement on how to understand this remarkable capacity for modal thought. We argue that the capacity for modal thought is built from a set of relatively simple component parts, centrally involving an ability to consider possible extensions of a part of the actual world. Natural minds can productively combine this ability with a range of (...) other capacities, eventually allowing for the observed suite of increasingly more sophisticated ways of modal reasoning. We demonstrate how our (de)compositional account is supported by both the trajectory of children’s developing capacity for reasoning about possible ways the world could be and by what we know about how such modal thought is expressed within and across natural languages. Our approach makes new predictions about which kinds of capacities are required by which kinds of experimental tasks and, as a result, contributes to settling currently open theoretical questions about the development of modal thought and the acquisition of modal vocabulary in children. Our work also provides a more systematic way of understanding possible variation in modal thought and talk, and, more generally, paves the way toward a unified theory that will ultimately allow researchers across disciplines to relate their findings to each other within a framework of shared assumptions. The past decade has seen extensive research carried out on the systematic causes of research misconduct. Simultaneously, less attention has been paid to the variation in academic misconduct between research fields, as most empirical studies focus on one particular discipline. We propose that academic discipline is one of several systematic factors that might contribute to academic misbehavior. Drawing on a neo-institutional approach, we argue that in the developing countries, the norm of textual originality has not drawn equal support across different (...) research fields depending on its level of internationalization. Using plagiarism detection software, we analyzed 2,405 doctoral dissertations randomly selected from all dissertations defended in Russia between 2007 and 2015. We measured the globalization of each academic discipline by calculating the share of publications indexed in the global citation database in relation to overall output. Our results showed that, with an average share of detected borrowings of over 19%, the incidence of plagiarism in Russia is remarkably higher than in Western countries. Overall, disciplines closely follow the pattern of higher globalization associated with a lower percentage of borrowed text. We also found that plagiarism is less prevalent at research-oriented institutions supporting global ethical standards. Our findings suggest that it might be misleading to measure the prevalence of academic misconduct in developing countries without paying attention to variations at the disciplinary level. (shrink)

Summary Gestalt Theoretical Psychotherapy, in the broader sense of the term, has developed in various forms on both sides of the Atlantic since the 1920s. Gestalt Theoretical Psychotherapy, in the narrower sense of the term, came into being in the second half of the 1970s in German-speaking countries. In Austria, it is a state-approved, independent scientific psychotherapy method since 1995, and an integrative psychotherapeutic approach based on the Gestalt theory of the Berlin School. With reference to this comprehensive, consistent, scientific (...) theory, this article presents the basic concepts of therapeutic practice in the field of Gestalt psychotherapy. Starting from the overarching whole to the parts, the paper first examines the concept of therapeutic relationship and therapeutic attitude, and then describes the basic principles of the practical design of the therapeutic process. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to advocate the consideration of consent and non-intrusiveness when designing Social Touch Technology (STT) – technology that allows people to touch each other remotely. Although STT is already available on the market, there are no standards to ensure consent in such technologymediated social touch. The paper is intended primarily for researchers and designers working on STT, but also addresses a broader audience of potential users. Design/methodology/approach The authors’ follow value-sensitive design approach. They conducted (...) a conceptual investigation, followed by an empirical investigation, where they relied on ethnographic research and two focus groups to elicit information about potentially intrusive situations for STT users. They further engaged in technical investigation and developed three intrusiveness-mitigating protocols, implemented them in a pair of haptic sleeves and assessed their effectiveness in a user study. Findings The findings indicated varying levels of success among the tested protocols in reducing perceived intrusiveness. Users reported all of the protocols to be helpful to some degree and emphasized the need for customizable solutions instead of fixed protocols. Originality/value They propose a typology of situations where technology-mediated social touch can be intrusive and non-desirable. They further demonstrate that intrusiveness-mitigating protocols can be built into STT and that they are effective. They propose directions for further development of these protocols and non-intrusive STT design. (shrink)

Teaching business ethics is a formidable task. The lingering question of whether we can teach business ethics has plagued educators and scholars. Unlike a typical competence-based module that quantitatively reflects a student's performance through their grades, grades alone cannot represent a student's ethical conviction. The business ethics module aims to transform a student's moral disposition, instill moral virtues in them, and reduce their capitalistic tendencies. The inculcation of these intangible moral virtues requires a breakaway from traditional teaching methods. This paper (...) discusses the potential for fostering business ethics through sensemaking anthropological elements in case studies. I argue that instead of an instructional delivery method of case study delivery, students that study the anthropology of a corporate crisis and sensemake its moral change may experience a deeper level of moral response. This paper, reflecting on a postgraduate task inspired by the Volkswagen Dieselgate crisis, delves into how this task enables students to comprehend Volkswagen's deconstruction process, ultimately leading to a moral transformation and reinvention. Towards the end of the paper, I delved into some "unusually sentimental" student feedback, which resonated with deeper reflexive responses when using this new approach. (shrink)

Das 2. Kapitel skizziert den Übergang psychoanalytischer Erfahrung aus der äußeren, sozialen, in die innere, psychische Realität. Neben den theoretischen Rahmenbedingungen der klinischen Arbeit werden hier kurz auch die institutionellen Bedingungen der Ausbildung und späteren Berufstätigkeit vorgestellt. Die Verschränkung von Beruf und Selbsterfahrung wird ebenso problematisiert wie das Verhältnis von Psychotherapie und Psychoanalyse, Oberfläche und Tiefe sowie die individuelle berufliche Entwicklung und ihre Verankerung in der Gruppe der Analytiker:innen.

Das 3. Kapitel schildert den Weg der psychoanalytischen Selbsterfahrung, Ausbildung und Berufstätigkeit in der individuellen inneren Welt. Schwerpunkte der Unterkapitel bilden Rahmenbedingungen, psychische Strukturen und Konfliktdynamiken, wie sie im Verlauf einer psychoanalytischen Behandlung bzw. Lehranalyse entstehen und beschrieben werden können. Die Unterkapitel schildern Probleme mit dem Anfang, dem therapeutischen Rahmen, der psychoanalytischen Grundregel der Wahrhaftigkeit, dem Umgang mit schwierigen Gefühlen bzw. Affekten, dem psychoanalytischen Prozess und möglichen Behandlungszielen.

Das 4. Kapitel geht kurz auf das Verhältnis von individueller und gesellschaftlicher Psychodynamik ein, wie sie sich aus der Sicht der psychoanalytischen Sozialpsychologie darstellt, und verweist auf aktuelle Institutionalisierung psychoanalytischer Sozialpsychologie in spezifischen Fachgesellschaften.

To what extent are artists and sitters (or researchers and “objects” of investigation) implicated in their representations of others? How implicated are we when we identify with the way different cultures or perspectives represent ourselves? Understanding how specific forms of representation reveal differently authored perceptions of the individual is a critical concern. My overarching concern, as an artist, is to start mapping contemporary practices of identity formation and expression through the investigation of specific non- Western and subcultural modes that prioritise (...) different codes and social processes of cultural production – modes that do not privilege the gaze. Crucially, the case studies operate a strategic reversal of the classical artistic and scientific approaches: both sides in this dialogue of interpretation and representation involving the artist/researcher and the cultural actor are equally subject and object. The resulting artworks present distinct cultural practices as new possibilities for portrayal, and acts of selection, interpretation and definition as forms of cultural production. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungForschung an und mit Menschen muss sich legitimieren, d. h. sie muss ihre wissenschaftliche Qualität, Rechtmäßigkeit und ethische Vertretbarkeit aufzeigen. Zu den Rechtfertigungsbedingungen zählt ein „günstiges“ Verhältnis von Nutzen- und Schadenpotenzialen des Forschungsvorhabens. Unabhängige Ethikkommissionen sind den Forschenden zur Seite gestellt, um sie bei der Prüfung und Sicherstellung der genannten Erfordernisse zu unterstützen. Eine zum Gebrauch durch Ethikkommissionen und Forschende entwickelte Nutzen- und Schadentaxonomie sowie ein Schema zur Systematisierung von Chancen-Risiken-Bewertungen wurde nachträglich auf alle Ethikanträge des Jahres 2006 an die (...) Ethikkommission der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität zu Lübeck angewandt. Unter den 206 analysierten Studienvorhaben lassen 46 % die Chance eines direkten Eigennutzens für die Studienteilnehmer erkennen. Als gruppennützig wurden 12 % der Studienprojekte eingestuft. Sie lassen unmittelbar nach Studienabschluss oder nach wenigen weiteren Studien ein Nutzenpotenzial für Personen mit den gleichen demographischen und klinischen Merkmalen wie die Studienteilnehmer erwarten. 42 % der Ethikanträge bezogen sich auf fremdnützige Studienvorhaben mit Nutzenchancen für die Heilkunde und/oder medizinische Wissenschaft. Das Risiko eines mehr als geringfügigen Eigenschadens wurde bei 53 % der Studien identifiziert. Die Analyse der jeweiligen Nutzenchancen und Schadenrisiken führte bei insgesamt 33 der 206 Studien (16 %) zu einem negativen Ergebnis: Im Urteil der nachträglich durchgeführten Bewertung übertreffen die Nutzenchancen nicht die Schadenrisiken. Studien mit einem mehr als geringfügigen Eigenschadenpotenzial sowie nicht-eigennützige Studien weisen besonders häufig eine negative Gesamtbilanz auf. Eine Prozeduralisierung der Analyse von Chancen und Risiken kann die Transparenz vorgenommener Analyse- und Vergleichsprozesse steigern. Die Kommunikation zwischen Forschenden und Ethikkommissionen sowie unter Ethikkommissionsmitgliedern bei strittigen Studienvorhaben wird erleichtert, die Standardisierung und Harmonisierung der Beratungsabläufe der Ethikkommissionen unterstützt. Assuming live music can foster belonging in the workplace, this study linked companies in the secondary and tertiary sectors with the world of music performance. Specifically, students from a Swiss music university offered live mini-concerts on the premises of three companies over a period of 3 months. To analyze the impact of these brief musical interventions on the sense of belonging of staff in these companies, a mixed methods approach was adopted using a standardized questionnaire. The short concerts were much (...) appreciated. On the individual level, they led to a greater sense of pleasure and were perceived as a break, a possibility to connect to one’s emotions and above all, as a “moment for oneself.” On the group level, the short concerts allowed the members of teams to meet, prompted conversations and new ways of sharing, created links, and offered opportunities to get to know work colleagues differently and to discover them on a more personal level. How can we deal with the diversity of theories in mathematics education? This was the main question that led the authors of this book to found the Networking Theories Group. Starting from the shared assumption that the existence of different theories is a resource for mathematics education research, the authors have explored the possibilities of interactions between theories, such as contrasting, coordinating, and locally integrating them. The book explains and illustrates what it means to network theories; it presents networking as (...) a challenging but fruitful research practice and shows how the Group dealt with this challenge considering five theoretical approaches, namely the approach of Action, Production, and Communication (APC), the Theory of Didactical Situations (TDS), the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), the approach of Abstraction in Context (AiC), and the Theory of Interest-Dense Situations (IDS). A synthetic presentation of each theory and their connections shows how the activity of networking generates questions at the theoretical, methodological and practical levels and how the work on these questions leads to both theoretical and practical progress. The core of the book consists of four new networking case studies which illustrate what exactly can be gained by this approach and what kind of difficulties might arise. (shrink)

Beiträge aus verschiedenen Disziplinen der Geistes- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften bieten inspirierende Anregungen in der gegenwärtigen Diskussion um neue Formate der ethischen Bildung in der Bundeswehr und das soldatische Selbstverständnis. Vor dem Hintergrund der Inneren Führung und des Grundgesetzes müssen deutsche Soldatinnen und Soldaten gerade in Zeiten von über die Landesverteidigung hinausgehenden Einsätzen moralische Urteilskompetenz entwickeln, um Verantwortung für sich und andere übernehmen zu können.

Wolf Graf von Baudissin is well known for his reformatory concept of the armed forces called Innere Führung (leadership development and civic education). He emphasises the idea of building up a Western German army, a new start in a democratic environment. Baudissin’s ideas are born out of the experience of injustice and inhumanity shown by many German soldiers and the organisational structure of the Wehrmacht. After World War II German military leaders excused the absence of morals in their conduct with (...) the necessity of obedience. Innere Führung means that the soldier is a human being, thus guided by his individual conscience and eternal law. Innere Führung has moreover a second meaning: It forms a military organisation which guarantees the individual soldier freedom, human and political rights, participation in military and political decisions, and responsibility for his acts. Therefore, Innere Führung is a concept to anchor democracy in military structures. Because of the actual problems of military missions abroad the founding ideas of Innere Führung are still of increasing importance. (shrink)

Der im Folgenden skizzierte Weg in die innere Realität der Psychoanalyse startet in der äußeren Welt. Dementsprechend gibt das 1. Kapitel einen kurzen Einblick in die Entstehungsgeschichte und Institutionalisierung der Psychoanalyse, insbesondere auch der psychoanalytischen Ausbildung. Es liefert zudem Informationen über das Verhältnis der Fachgesellschaften zu den staatlichen und gesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen.

This chapter investigates the ambiguity of appearance by combining a systematic approach with the analysis of relevant phenomena in early modern English literature. The starting point is the remarkable fact that the three most frequently used verbs that denote events belonging to the concept are ambiguous: appearmeans both ‘emerge’ and ‘look’; seemmeans both ‘be suggestive of’ and ‘look as if (while it is not)’; shinemeans both ‘emit light’ and ‘illuminate’ (e.g. when used with upon). This ambiguity in each case links (...) an ontological statement (something is being said about what something is) with an epistemic one (something is perceived as something even though it may not be true). By analysing some key occurrences of the three verbs we will notice that spatial relationships and dynamics link the ontological and the epistemic aspects: if something appears(looks), it does so because it has emerged, i.e. come out of one sphere into another (the one of the perceiver); if it seems, it is like something else that does not originally (and perhaps does not at all) occupy the same space; if something shines, it emits light, and in so doing casts it on something in a different place and makes it visible. Zu den elementaren Rechtfertigungsbedingungen der medizinischen Forschung an und mit Menschen zählt die informierte Einwilligungserklärung („informed consent“) des Probanden/Patienten. Für die Gewährleistung eines „informed consent“ sind dem potenziellen Studienteilnehmer u. a. qualitativ hochwertige schriftliche Aufklärungsmaterialien zur Verfügung zu stellen. Wir entwickelten eine Liste von Prüfpunkten, um mit ihnen die Qualität schriftlicher Aufklärungsmaterialien zu bestimmen und zu bewerten. Mithilfe eines Kriterienkataloges bestehend aus über 100 Prüfpunkten wurde die Qualität von 128 zufällig ausgewählten schriftlichen Aufklärungsmaterialien zu Forschungsvorhaben beurteilt, die der Ethikkommission der (...) Universität zu Lübeck im Jahr 2006 vorgelegt worden waren. Jeder Prüfpunkt ist einem von sechs Qualitätsbereichen zugeordnet (z. B. Lesbarkeit und Verständlichkeit, Nutzen-/Schadenpotenziale). Die untersuchten Aufklärungsmaterialien erfüllten im Durchschnitt die Hälfte der 117 abgefragten Qualitätskriterien, die Spannweite reichte dabei von 20 % bis 76 %. Der höchste Qualitätsscore wurde für den Bereich „Einwilligungserklärung“ beobachtet (64 % der Kriterien erfüllt), am schlechtesten schnitt der Bereich „Nutzen- und Schadenpotenziale“ ab (35 % der Kriterien erfüllt). Aufklärungsmaterialien zu klinischen Prüfungen von Arzneimitteln zeigten dabei eine signifikant höhere Qualität als die Aufklärungsmaterialien zu anderen Studientypen. Nur 21 der 117 analysierten Qualitätskriterien wurden in mehr als 80 % der einschlägigen Aufklärungsmaterialien umgesetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt deutliche Defizite in der Qualität der untersuchten Aufklärungsmaterialien auf. Forscherinnen und Forscher benötigen Hilfestellung bei der Erstellung von Materialien, die eine informierte Entscheidung für oder gegen eine Studienteilnahme ermöglichen. Der von uns eingesetzte Kriterienkatalog könnte u. a. im Rahmen von Doktorandenseminaren dazu genutzt werden, den Blick für die Vielfalt der Anforderungen zu schärfen. (shrink)
