The main reasons for the difficulty in understanding and translatingcheng may be summarized as follows. First, its prehistory is not always clear. This makes it troublesome to identify its original meaning. Second, the multiple sources from the three schools, Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, often causecheng to be entangled with various concepts specifically affiliated to certain schools. The particular meanings of these concepts and their connections withcheng possibly mislead our effort to explore the core content ofcheng as such. Finally,cheng has been (...) described as a force causing either transformation or change. In the former case, its influence is often exaggerated, while in the latter, it appears, more or less, mystical. However, despite all the complexity, the core content ofcheng is still identifiable. It consists of what two English terms- sincerity and reality -convey. Liang Shuming once applied the concept of intuition to characterize Chinese culture as a whole. Later, he not only replaced the theoretical position of intuition with the concept of reason, but discarded the term for intuition itself. The Chinese view of time and history cannot be defined as either “cyclicality” or “linearity” in the sense of St. Augustine and Hegel. Like the Indo-Hellenic cyclicality, it regards the cyclical movements as universal in both Heaven and human. Nevertheless, it contains neither the conception of Great Year or Mahayuga, nor that of repeated destruction and reconstruction of humankind. It holds that the cyclical movements do not recur as “uniform rotation,” but appear as a chain composed of countless links each (...) of which possesses individuality. It is not the chain itself, but each of its links that cyclically develop. Meanwhile, it agrees with the Judeo-Christian tradition that there is no repetition and reversibility for historical figures and events. However, it does not believe that history has an absolute beginning and end, demonstrating itself as a One-Grand Cycle from human alienation from God to their reconciliation with Him. (shrink)

This chapter examines Liang Shuming’s work The Fundamentals of Chinese Culture (Zhongguo wenhua yaoyi 中國文化要義), analyzing his major conceptions about Chinese society and investigating his intellectual relations to Western thinkers. Inspired by Bertrand Russel’s discussion of the psychological sources for human activities, Liang distinguished three components of the human heart: instinct, intellect, and reason. He coined a new term, “the operation of mind” (xinsi zuoyong 心思作用), to denote an integral unity composed of intellect and reason. Meanwhile, he reiterated his old (...) idea about the difference between Western and Chinese cultures, arguing that the Westerner was strong in intellect, but weak in reason, while the Chinese was strong in reason, but weak in intellect. Liang holds that traditional Chinese society was an “ethic-based society” and a “profession-differentiated one.” Due to the effort of Confucius and other sages, China completed its effort of replacing religion with morality in an early time. Marx-Engels’ doctrines of class struggle and classification of history were right for Western society but could not be applied to Chinese reality. In China, the four ranks of scholar, peasant, artisan, and merchant represented four social professions, instead of four social classes. Since the Qin-Han period, Chinese history had undertaken a cyclical development without substantial alteration in economy and politics. (shrink)

"Cheng" is a key term in Chinese culture. At the same time, it has been widely viewed as an "elusive," even "the most unintelligible term" by both Chinese and Western scholars, because of its various, sometimes even contradictory usages and definitions. This dissertation points out that cheng possesses a core meaning--consistency. It is shared by all the usages and definitions, and legitimizes their validity as the members of the cheng family. ;The idea of cheng evolves mainly through two traditions, the (...) traditions of influence and of reality. The first one emphasizes the impact of cheng on other people. It claims that cheng is the ultimate source from which comes a series of positive consequences. The second one treats cheng as essential attribute, or reality of a thing. It can explain why a thing exists as itself. Between the two traditions, cheng/influence is more prominent and complicated. ;The tradition of influence in turn divides into two sub-traditions, the sub-traditions of transformation and of change. One stresses that the sage with perfect cheng will effortlessly enlighten people, necessarily draw them to follow him. The goal of social transformation will be automatically realized in the above two-way process. The other emphasizes that cheng in a person's heart/mind can be made actively radiate out, impact on other people, and stimulate, inspire, and persuade them to do what the person treasures and wishes. The first one characterizes cheng in mainstream Confucianism, while the second is often found in various philosophers out of the mainstream. ;The work of Song Confucians signifies the summit of the evolution of the idea of cheng. They construct a system, with the notion of heaven, or the heavenly way as its foundation, and that of the transformation as its framework. In modern times, due to both theoretical rejections and practical challenges, the notion of heaven is decisively damaged. This results in the collapse of the system. The present task is not to rebuild the precious parts of the cheng tradition on the discredited heaven, but to rearrange them around the original core meaning. (shrink)

Humour is regarded as an adaptive coping strategy which could effectively reduce negative emotions. To fundamentally evaluate the function of humour reappraisal, our study aimed to explore the emotion-regulatory advantage effect of humour reappraisal from the perspective of memory mechanisms. Using a learning-testing paradigm, we examined the memory effects of humour reappraisal: first presented humour (or non-humour) reappraisal interpretations of the negative pictures during the learning phase and tested the memory performance from three aspects: free recall, recognition, and implicit memory (...) in the test phase. The results found a superior effect of humorous reappraisal in free recall performance but reduced memory performance for negative stimuli in the recognition and implicit tests. This may be due to the refined processing of humour reappraisal during encoding, the memory content being updated and transformed after cognitive reconstruction, and the original negative pictures no longer being familiar during recognition. The dissociable result in free recall and implicit/recognition of humorous reappraisal suggested that humour reappraisal was an optimal strategy for coping with negative stimuli by fundamentally regulating negative emotions through “cognitive restructuring” rather than “forgetting.” This provided advantageous evidence for the humour reappraisal as an adaptive emotion regulation strategy from a memory perspective. Pp. 1,020.Encyclopedias can be useful in teaching philosophy when students need some reading that sets out the basics on a key topic in a few pages without their getting lost in too many complex details or being misled by oversimplifications. They can also be edifying for the philosophy teacher and (...) scholar—providing reliable, up-to-date information on topics that lie in their field but that are not part of their working knowledge. For these reasons, those working in Chinese philosophy will welcome the publication of the Encyclopedia of Chinese Philosophy. The 187 entries cover a variety of subject areas such as "Moral Philosophy" and "Philosophy of language"; Confucianism in different periods and countries, Daoism, Mohism, Legalism, the school of names, Buddhism, and Marxism in China; philosophical trends in post-Mao China, Taiwan, and overseas; key concepts such as dao (the way), fa (law, standards), liyi fenshu (principle and manifestations), and quanli (rights); texts such as the Huainanzi and the Wenzi; and thinkers from Laozi and Confucius to Hu Shih and Mou Zongsan.Instead of more numerous short entries, this encyclopedia has opted for fewer entries of greater length—the Preface tells us that entries on important thinkers and philosophical topics typically range from five thousand to nine thousand words in length, and a quick check reveals that even the shortest entry is at least two pages long (more than one thousand words). This format allows authors to explore the philosophical issues at some depth, and expound even complex arguments in detail. The connections between different concepts, thinkers, texts, philosophical theories, and development that stretch across different periods and territories can be delineated more clearly in a single entry. There is a danger of duplication with this format, as some texts and concepts may be covered in several articles; for example, most of "Confucianism: Constructs of Classical Thought" is on what the author identifies as six key texts of Classical Confucianism: the Analects, Mencius, Xunzi, Yizhuan, Zhongyong (Doctrine of the mean), and Daxue (Great Learning). The sections on Mencius and Xunzi (pp. 66-67) merely introduce a small part of what is discussed in much greater depth and detail in the entries on these two thinkers (pp. 440-448 and 821-829). The Zhongyong and Daxue also have their own entries, and "Confucianism: Confucius" (p. 61) contains an entire section on the Analects.As it turns out, the duplication is less than expected. Pei-jung Fu, author of "Confucianism: Constructs of Classical Thought," implicitly questions Xunzi's Confucian pedigree, beginning his discussion with "Xunzi professed to be an advocate of Confucianism" (p. 67). Such doubt is clearly not shared by A. S. Cua, who authored [End Page 111] the entry on "Xunzi," introducing the thinker as "an important exponent of classical Confucianism" (p. 821). Cua also does not share Fu's view that "the real issue between Mencius and Xunzi lies in their concepts of heaven (tian)" (p. 67). Fu and the author of the entry on the Zhongyong translate key terms in the texts differently: Fu discusses "five ethical codes" and "three comprehensive virtues" (p. 68) while Yanming An calls them "five universal paths" and "three universal virtues" (p. 890). Such differences can be either thought provoking or confusing (especially when unaccompanied by Chinese characters or even pinyin), depending on the reader. The sections on the Analects in "Confucianism: Confucius" and "Confucianism: Constructs of Classical Thought" have hardly anything in common; the first examines it as an account of how Confucius lives as an exemplar remembered by his students, while the latter discusses its content, focusing on ren and li, as well as on Confucius' religious concerns. While concepts such as ren and li are frequently discussed, the different ways in which authors employ them and the different characteristics, contexts, and philosophical stakes they pay attention to enrich one's understanding of the many dimensions of these concepts even as similarities in diverse entries reinforce certain aspects and perspectives.One comes across disagreements to various degrees on common or related topics among different entries. We propose that viewpoint theory might also provide a progressive, constitutive marker of consciousness and shed light on why most of the contents of consciousness are encapsulated.

This study investigated students? perceptions of their own and their peers? academic dishonesty (AD), their reasons for this dishonesty, their achievement goals, and their willingness to report AD (WRAD) within a Chinese cultural context. The results identified students? belief that their peers had a greater likelihood of engaging in AD and had more motivation to do so than did the students themselves. Gender and academic major did not affect students? WRAD. However, students were significantly more willing to report classmates than (...) friends. In terms of the participants? self-perceptions and peer perceptions concerning motivations for AD, more female students cited the lack of penalties as the reason for their own and their peers? AD, whereas male students more frequently cited their lack of attention to schoolwork as the reason for their own AD. In contrast to students in the social sciences, business students more frequently cited inadequate capabilities as the reason for their AD, and engineering students more frequently attributed their AD to self-interest. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that three motivations for AD (opportunism, inadequacy, and self-promotion) could positively predict AD, whereas mastery-approach goals could negatively predict AD. Since the notion of the Anthropocene entered the discourse of environmental humanities, it has prompted multiple conceptual innovations. This paper focuses on one such case: the term planetary – and the adjacent genre of planetary thinking – theorized by a broad range of scholars. The original contribution of this paper lies in developing an astronomical concept of the planet, derived from the definition agreed by resolution 5A 2006 of International Astronomical Union, which defines planets based on their dynamical context. By (...) means of philosophical interpretation of the definition’s underlying assumptions, this paper articulates standalone philosophical implications of the astronomical concept: the contextualization of the planet in expanded ecology of the solar system, paired with the understanding of the planet as a structure of phase gradients and as a historical natural kind. Furthermore, I position the astronomical concept alongside theorizations of the planet by Latour, Stengers, Clark & Szerszynski as well as Chakrabarty, touching upon the Gaia hypothesis or the concept of geological history. Finally, I encourage deeper disciplinary interaction between astronomy and environmental humanities. The benefits of this interaction are highlighted in the concluding discussion concerning the multiplicity of planetary narratives and applications of the astronomical concept of the planet. (shrink)

In this paper, I develop an account of appreciation. I argue that appreciation is an epistemic emotion in which the subject grasps the object in an affective way. The “grasping” and “feeling” components implies that in appreciation, we make sense of the object by having cognitive control over it, are motivated to maintain the valuable epistemic state of understanding, and experience the “aha” or “eureka” moment. This account offers a unified account of the many types of appreciation, including the aesthetic, (...) the moral, and the epistemic. In all these cases, appreciation requires some other first-order emotions as prerequisite. (shrink)

The rapid increase in the number of international students in Türkiye has made the process of acculturation a critical issue that influences identity, cultural values, and academic success significantly. Despite the growing body of research on acculturation, the literature remains insufficient in addressing the unique challenges and strategies encountered by students within the specialized context of higher religious education, where religious and cultural sensitivities are particularly pronounced. This research gap hinders the development of optimized guidance and support systems specifically tailored (...) to the diverse needs of international theology students. This study aims to examine the acculturation processes and strategies employed by international theology students receiving higher religious education in Türkiye. The study was conducted using an explanatory sequential design, which is one of the mixed-methods designs. First, quantitative data were collected from 169 students at Necmettin Erbakan University, Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Theology. These students represented a wide geographical diversity, coming from 48 different countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The quantitative phase used the 84-item "Acculturation Scale" to measure integration, separation, and assimilation tendencies. The subsequent qualitative phase involved semi-structured interviews with 16 purposively selected students to provide deeper insight into their lived experiences. The quantitative findings revealed that students most frequently adopted the integration strategy (x̄=3.786), indicating a high level of tendency to maintain their own culture while engaging with the host culture, and least frequently adopted the assimilation strategy (x̄=2.568). Statistical analyses showed significant differences based on the religious majority in the students' home countries, with those from Muslim-majority countries showing higher integration and separation scores. Additionally, students from Asia exhibited a significantly higher tendency towards separation than their European counterparts. The qualitative data, categorized into socio-cultural, academic, and psychological dimensions, further clarified these findings, showing that integration was most prominent in social relations and academic environments. Conversely, academic separation was noted regarding differences in assessment methods and course content, such as the inclusion of secular subjects like the history of the Turkish Revolution. The study concludes that the higher religious educational environment in Türkiye is largely supportive of cultural integration, yet acculturation remains a multi-layered and dynamic process shaped by academic and religious experiences. These findings support the flexible interpretation of acculturation strategies, suggesting that students frequently adopt multiple strategies simultaneously depending on the context. Future research should adopt interdisciplinary and multidimensional frameworks to explore acculturation across diverse cultural and educational contexts. Particular emphasis should be placed on the influence of institutional practices, academic culture, and curricula on international students’ acculturation strategies. (shrink)

This article investigates recent transformations in global capitalism’s political economy as it relates to the evolution of globally integrated production and exchange apparatuses, such as platforms, enabled through technological advances in computational infrastructures. These infrastructures are explicable in terms of the model of the Stack, understood as an accidental mega-structure of the contemporary platform economy that is integrating previously detached circulation and accumulation structures. The Stack is introduced as an integrative model of a multi-layered political economic system that allows us (...) to understand and explain recent developments in global capitalism. Focus is thereby given to intensified real abstraction of labour induced by the capitalist appropriation of planetary-scale computation, and the associated rise of platform sovereignty in opposition to the traditional sovereignties of states and markets. Building on the model of the Stack, we set in relation different perspectives on recent capitalist development in terms of planetary-scale computation: transnational informational capitalism, cognitive capitalism, intellectual monopoly capitalism and techno-feudalism. This paper aims to explore an astrobiological genealogy of the concept of the Planetary vividly discussed in contemporary environmental humanities and social sciences, and to offer a framework for an articulation of political-economic models based on this concept. Following Bentley Allan, we propose to treat the Planetary as an example of scientific cosmology, thus emphasizing how astrobiology supports a much broader philosophical worldview that shines a new light on persistent problems related to organizing human inhabitation of the Earth. Starting with (...) the analysis and speculative elaboration on Allan’s theory of cosmological shifts in international orders during Western modernity, we associate the Anthropocene discourse as an inaugurating moment in the consolidation of the Planetary’s scientific cosmology, grounded in the astrobiology’s metabolic perspective on complex adaptive systems. The narrative of the paper offers a genealogy of this perspective, including the most recent research about information metabolisms and biosphere-technosphere coupling in astrobiology, which paves the way for the explanation of the economy itself as a metabolic entity. After the review of adjacent philosophical positions associated with ecological economics and the theory of complex adaptive systems, the paper concludes with remarks on the Planetary as a cornerstone of an international order that yields economic imperatives governed by a generic view of the Earth as a member of a potentially large and diverse category of habitable planets. Covid-19 salgın dönemi, insanlığın çaresizliği tecrübe ettiği böyle dönemlerden biridir. İnsanlar kaygı düzeylerini yükselten, ölüm kaygılarını aktifleştiren ve kendi güçlerini aşan bu gibi durumlarla karşılaştıklarında inanç biçimi ve düzeyine göre sıklığı değişmekle birlikte dini başa çıkmaya başvurmaktadırlar. Araştırmanın amacı, salgınla mücadele eden sağlık çalışanlarının ölüm kaygısı düzeyleri ile dini başa çıkma düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemektir. Bu amaçla gerçekleştiren araştırmaya 227 sağlık çalışanı gönüllü olarak katılmış, veriler internet aracılığıyla (...) toplanmıştır. Araştırmada sonuç olarak Covid-19 salgın döneminde aktif çalışan sağlık çalışanlarının ölüm kaygısı düzeylerinin orta, olumlu dini başa çıkma düzeylerinin ortanın üstü, olumsuz dini başa çıkma düzeylerinin ise düşük düzeyde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan korelasyon analizinde katılımcıların ölüm kaygısı düzeyleri ile olumlu ve olumsuz dini başa çıkma düzeyleri arasında negatif yönlü anlamlı ilişki olduğu, ancak öznel dindarlık algısı ile ölüm kaygısı arasındaki ilişkinin pozitif yönlü anlamlı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. This study investigates the reference-tracking strategies employed in children’s storybooks written in Turkish, a pro-drop language. It also examines how the pro-drop property of Turkish influences the use of referring expressions (noun phrases, overt pronouns, and null pronouns) in subject position, particularly in the contexts of topic re-introduction and topic maintenance. To this end, a self-compiled corpus consisting of two hundred storybooks targeting children aged one to seven was created. The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. The findings (...) show that re-introduction contexts contain more noun phrases and fewer overt or null pronouns. By contrast, maintenance contexts feature a greater number of null pronominal subjects than overt pronouns and noun phrases. In both referential contexts, overt pronouns are used infrequently than noun phrases and null subjects. These results indicate that noun phrases and null pronouns align with the discourse characteristics of their referents, whereas overt pronouns exhibit a limited relationship with the characteristics of their referents. The findings also suggest that the pro-drop property of Turkish significantly shapes the use of referring expressions in maintenance contexts. (shrink)

In this chapter we aim to analyse the emergence of autographic visualisations produced by the Earth itself, and processed by a vast machine of sensing and modelling the Earth. First, we introduce the general framework of autographic visualisation theory as sketched by Dietmar Offenhuber, and we compare it to the notion of operational images crafted by Harun Farocki. While doing so, we argue that autographic visualisations are non-representational – which principally distinguishes them from photographs of the Earth – and sensitive (...) towards the socio-material context of the emergence of data – which makes them different from operational images. In the second part of the chapter we explore the infrastructural context of the emergence of autographic visualisations on the global scale, answering the question of whom or what is the primary witness of planetary autographic visualisations. Ultimately, our claim is that autographic visualisations bring our attention back to the ways in which the opaque reality of the planet unveils itself in productive or destructive alignments between its human and non-human elements, for better or worse. Banks have an important social responsibility to serve the real economy and to maintain financial stability, and they also need to be responsible to borrowers and others. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the global economy and increasing financial risks, it is particularly important for banks to assume social responsibilities. This study theoretically analyzed the outstanding applicability of stakeholder governance theory. Using a two-stage game method, the optimal pressure intensity of the social responsibility stakeholders was calculated, and the (...) dynamic performance of shareholders was deduced. We found that the establishment of the social responsibility stakeholder governance mechanism will prompt the bank to fulfill its social responsibilities; rational social responsibility stakeholders will not lead to poor bank management due to excessive behavior; and shareholders with social responsibility can self-consciously choose the investment projects with lower negative externalities. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: The participation of stakeholder and the establishment of the social responsibility function of the board of directors can help promote a bank's social responsibility performance. This work studied the social responsibility of banks from the new perspective of stakeholder governance, expands the theoretical boundaries, and puts forward relevant suggestions to enhance the application value of this research. This theoretical article moves beyond representationalist conceptions of objectivity to examine deeper challenges posed by LLMs in collective knowledge production. While LLMs are often criticized for bias, hallucination, and generating “bullshit” that misrepresents reality, such critiques are too narrow to account for how LLMs transform the sociotechnical practices of knowledge-making. Drawing on Barad’s performative account, we argue that objectivity should be understood not as fixed representations of the world but as ongoing ethical and epistemological boundaries emerging through complex intra-acting agencies. We offer a relational analysis of LLM production, framing it as a series of transformations between technical artifacts: from Internet to dataset, dataset to base model, and base model to instruction-tuned model. Each transformation introduces exclusions that enact epistemological, computational, and discursive boundaries. We conclude by proposing “artifactual literacy,” a critical awareness of how LLMs function as contingent artifacts mediating the evolving boundaries of objective knowledge. (shrink)

Using poetic metaphors in the Serbian language, we identified systematic variations in the impact of fluid and crystalized intelligence on comprehension of metaphors that varied in rated aptness and familiarity. Overall, comprehension scores were higher for metaphors that were high rather than low in aptness, and high rather than low in familiarity. A measure of crystalized intelligence was a robust predictor of comprehension across the full range of metaphors, but especially for those that were either relatively unfamiliar or more apt. (...) In contrast, individual differences associated with fluid intelligence were clearly found only for metaphors that were low in aptness. Superior verbal knowledge appears to be particularly important when trying to find meaning in novel metaphorical expressions, and also when exploring the rich interpretive potential of apt metaphors.
