In this piece we explore the COVID pandemic as an opportunity for the articulation and realization of digital health futures. Our discussion draws on an engagement with emergent discourse around COVID-19 and ongoing work on imaginaries of future care associated with digital tools for the detection of cognitive decline and the risk of dementia. We describe how the post-COVID futures of digital health are narrated in terms of the timing and speed with which they are being brought into being, as (...) market actors attempt to establish the scale and durability of the COVID transformation. However, we also point to the particularly spatial changes to medical practice they envisage. In a time of distancing and isolation, the ability to operate effectively at a distance has become integral to the future of medical assessment, diagnosis and care. However, spatialized promises of digital health and the ability to act remotely are unevenly spread – some organizations and entities inevitably have greater reach. (shrink)

The adoption of circular economy principles poses a vibrant challenge for firms by becoming a potential and sustainable way for them to keep pace with highly dynamic changes in a competitive environment. Although previous research has examined experiences and practices that firms adopt to facilitate their transition to a circular economy, existing studies fall short of describing the factors that firms could leverage for circular business model design and implementation. This issue is more relevant to creative industries, such as haute (...) cuisine, which is strongly characterized by sustainability concerns and assumes a leading role in the food industry. To explore and identify those relevant factors, this research uses a multiple-case study approach, focusing on seven Michelin Green Star restaurants in Italy, which link culinary excellence with an increasing commitment to sustainability. The findings advance theoretical understanding of how creative industries can drive the transition to a circular economy by providing a novel framework grounded in three interrelated dimensions: green sustainable behavior, creativity, and terroir. Most models of lexical access assume that bilingual speakers activate their two languages even when they are in a context in which only one language is used. A critical piece of evidence used to support this notion is the observation that a given word automatically activates its translation equivalent in the other language. Here, we argue that these findings are compatible with a different account, in which bilinguals “carry over” the structure of their native language to the non-native language during (...) learning, and where there is no activation of translation equivalents. To demonstrate this, we describe a model in which language learning involves mapping native language phonological relationships to the non-native language, and we show how it can explain the results attributed to automatic activation of translation equivalents. Background In February, 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the ban on medical assistance in dying. In June, 2016, the federal government passed Bill C-14, permitting MAiD. Current medical students will be the first physician cohort to enter a system permissive of MAiD, and may help to ensure equitable access to care. This study assessed medical student views on MAiD, factors influencing these views, and opportunities for medical education. Methods An exploratory cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to (...) medical students across all years of a three-year Canadian undergraduate medical program. The investigators administered the survey to participants during academic sessions from November to December, 2015. Analysis of the results included summary descriptive statistics, Pearson’s chi-square test of independence to identify differences between participants by year of study, logistic regression to identify factors that influence students’ stances on MAiD, and Wilcoxon signed rank test to measure changes in student support for MAiD and comfort discussing MAiD. Results There were 405 participants for a response rate of 87%. The majority of students supported the Supreme Court’s decision, 61% would provide the means for a patient to end their life, and 38% would personally administer a lethal medication. Students who were more willing to provide the means for MAiD found medical education/clinical experience and patient autonomy to be important contributors to their stances on MAiD. Those students who were less willing to provide the means for MAiD found religious/spiritual beliefs and teachings, as well as concern about potential negative consequences, to be important contributors to their stances on MAiD. Educational training desired by participants included medicolegal, communication skills, technical skills, and religious. Conclusions Medical students generally supported and would provide the means for MAiD to patients. They also indicated a desire for directed medical education on MAiD. (shrink)

Bereby‐Meyer, Hayakawa, Shalvi, Corey, Costa and Keysar investigate lying for self‐serving reasons. Participants in their experiments had to report the outcome of rolling a die only known to them. They inflated their outcomes less, and thus lied less, when using a foreign language than when using their native language. The authors suggest that lying for self‐serving reasons is an automatic tendency that can be overcome by speaking in a foreign language. [71].

This chapter intends to present a practical reflection on the concept of enhancement and neuroenhancement, linking bioethics and psychiatry. To do this, we first begin by reviewing some theoretical literature on the subject and, secondly, draw some of the implications that the concept involves. This moment is based on daily psychiatric experience and is presented here as a clinical vignette.

This discursive conceptual paper reframes sustainable and planetary health through a nursing‐centred lens by applying the Fundamentals of Care framework to contemporary challenges including population ageing, multimorbidity, climate disruption, digital fragmentation and widening social inequities. It argues that the Fundamentals of Care provide an integrative framework capable of connecting the physical, psychosocial and relational dimensions of care with broader agendas of sustainable and planetary health. By positioning nursing practice at the interface where macro‐level societal pressures are translated into lived experience, (...) the framework illuminates how health literacy, digital literacy, Healthy Cities and self‐care in ageing can be understood as relationally and environmentally constituted capabilities rather than as individual responsibilities alone. From this perspective, health and digital literacy emerge as strategic public capabilities that strengthen resilience to misinformation, polarisation and civic disengagement, while Healthy Cities illustrate how environmental design and governance can promote well‐being and equity at scale. Attention to political, commercial and digital determinants further highlights the need for relational infrastructures that foster trust, participation and inclusion. The paper concludes that the Fundamentals of Care positions nursing practice as a relational infrastructure that links individuals, communities and systems, translating sustainability agendas into lived experience and enabling sustainable and planetary health to advance in ways that connect policy ambitions with equity and long‐term societal resilience. Leibniz planned to publish the great Treatise on the Dynamica, written during his Italian journey (1689-90). In the end, however, he decided against publication, and the text was not edited until 1860 by Gerhard. The present critical edition is unique in that it brings together all of Leibniz's autograph drafts, the intermediate copies and the final copy intended for publication. It also aims to reconstitute Leibniz’s complete editorial plan, by adding to it the appendices (Miscellanea), articles published in scholarly journals (...) and studies on various subjects of astronomy and natural philosophy, which Leibniz had planned to append to the main work. Public decisions concerning large projects with detrimental environmental or heritage impacts involve value conflicts which stem from the diverse interests and variety of ways of evaluating the costs and benefits of such projects. They are also framed by institutionalised procedures and practices which favour certain concerns to the detriment of others. This paper aims to contribute towards a better understanding of how these procedures and practices, namely decision support tools such as the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), tend to shape public (...) decision-making processes in particular ways. It draws on a study of the public controversy surrounding the Foz Tua dam in Portugal, with a focus on the values upheld by the different parties in the controversy and their interplay in the production of justifications, specifically the actors’ positions on values and value conflicts and the restrictions posed by institutionalised public decision-making procedures on the expression and consideration of certain values. This article proposes reading Heidegger’s Being and Time as a philosophical Bildungsroman. I argue that Being and Time presupposes an unthematized premise, namely that an existential turning is necessary in order to philosophize. Bringing Heidegger into dialogue with the German Bildungsroman tradition, I demonstrate how Being and Time exhibits a quasi-narrative structure organized around three dramatic acts: everyday existence in das Man, the existential reversal of anxiety, enabling the phenomenological interpretive conversion required for philosophical thinking, and the recognition achieved through (...) authentic resoluteness. This interpretation reveals productive parallels with Aristotelian narrative theory while maintaining the crucial distinction between phenomenology and fiction, since the treatise composes ways of Being rather than events. Two peculiarities distinguish Heidegger’s philosophical Bildungsroman, namely radical temporality and perpetual incompletion. This reading illuminates the existential-formative dimension of Heideggerian phenomenology and its connection to the German ideal of Bildung as a constant, ongoing effort. (shrink)

Recorrendo à filosofia de Friedrich Nietzsche, o presente artigo pretende articular o tema da origem dos sentimentos morais com a ideia do espírito livre. Ao abranger alguns dos aforismos presentes em Hu­mano demasiado humano, esta investigação se ocupa em corroborar a ruptura do filósofo com os preceitos metafísicos encontrados em alguns dos seus escritos produzidos nos anos anteriores. Nesta fase, segundo Nietzsche, os sentimentos morais, bem como toda a condição humana, seriam compreendidos por meio de processos inteiramente químicos e naturais, (...) refutando, dessa maneira, as explicações de origem metafísica e religiosa conforme vistas na tradição. Embora seja possível notar o es­copo em defesa da ciência e da crença na existência de tipos superiores, chamados de espíritos livres, é possível concluir com este estudo que o esforço maior do pensamento nietzschiano consiste na busca dos meios facilitadores para o alcance de uma cultura elevada. Em um país marcado pela escravidão recente e desigualdade de gênero, o presente estudo busca compreender em que medida a cozinha e a prisão manifestam-se como instrumentos de controle social da mulher negra no Brasil. Argumenta-se que, tal qual as instituições totais “tradicionais” mobilizadas por Goffman (2015), também a cozinha atua como instrumento de controle social (Garland, 2008), no contexto socioeconômico da mulher negra. Como ferramenta de análise, foram utilizados dados oficiais sobre as populações domésticas e carcerárias no país e (...) referenciais teóricos, que acenam ao fato de que tanto a prisão como a cozinha atravessam os corpos não brancos das mulheres de forma similar, garantindo a manutenção das desigualdades e vulnerabilidades do gênero e da raça. The roles companion animals have played in our lives has dramatically changed over the last few decades. At the same time, the terms we use to describe both the people and animals in these human-animal relationships have also changed. One example includes the use of the terms ‘owner’ or ‘guardian’ to refer to the human caretaker. While preferences by society appear to indicate increased interest in referring to companion animal caretakers as ‘guardians’, others have cautioned against its use or attempted (...) to restrict it. Additionally, the use of animal welfare terminology has direct implications for how we conduct both welfare research and practice. Our paper examines the use of ‘owner’ and ‘guardian’ with respect to (1) the implications for changing terminology on the function, clarity and uniformity of their use, and (2) the ethical and welfare impact that coincides with each term’s use. Our goal is to propose terminological considerations that could influence future welfare research, as well as help guide our interactions with companion animals. (shrink)

O bem-estar dos docentes é um tema particularmente relevante e tem vindo a receber um interesse crescente. Contudo, são escassos os estudos em escolas no estrangeiro, motivo pelo qual se apresenta este trabalho que pretende explorar do bem-estar destes professores, em particular, descrever o seu bem-estar subjetivo e o bem-estar na escola, explorando o papel de variáveis pessoais e profissionais no bem-estar dos professores. Para isso, foi recolhida uma amostra de 58 docentes a lecionar em escolas portuguesas no estrangeiro, na (...) sua maioria mulheres, com idades entre os 27 e os 69 anos. Os resultados sugerem um bem-estar subjetivo globalmente positivo, acima do ponto médio, e relações significativas com variáveis organizacionais. Aspectos que são discutidos. No capítulo X de A Estrutura das Revoluções Científicas (1962) de Thomas Kuhn o conceito de paradigma figura como elemento filosófico central na tensão que se estabelece entre o âmbito perceptivo/cognitivo versus o âmbito ontológico do “problema da mudança de mundo”. No presente artigo, apresento alguns desdobramentos do conceito de paradigma com o objetivo de indicar dois sentidos principais para o termo subjacentes às formulações kuhnianas no capítulo X e que são desenvolvidos na obra tardia do autor, a saber: (1) (...) o ‘paradigma’ como exemplar, apresentado em “Postscript – 1969” (1970) e “Seconds thoughts on paradigms” (1977); e (2) o ‘paradigma’ como léxico, apresentado principalmente, em, “Metaphor in science” (1979), “Commensurability, comparability, communicability” (1983), “Possible worlds in history of science” (1989), “The road since Structure” (1990) e “Afterwords” (1993). Através do conceito de exemplar, explicito a função cognitiva que os paradigmas exercem nos membros das comunidades científicas: a singularidade dos exemplares reside não apenas no fato de eles serem exemplos-padrão para os membros de uma comunidade, mas em serem expressão de um processo cognitivo mais geral que já está pressuposto no desenvolvimento da atividade científica. Através do conceito de léxico, explicito a função constitutiva dos paradigmas como princípios a priori, porém dinâmicos e relativizados, como condições de possibilidade para a experiência do conhecimento, sendo, em particular, determinantes na experiência do sujeito no âmbito científico. Nesse sentido, a articulação teórica proposta nesse artigo evidencia que a análise do empreendimento científico na Estrutura considera processos cognitivos e ontológicos do sujeito epistêmico expressos por meio do conceito de paradigma. No entanto, essa compreensão é obscurecida diante do emprego polissêmico e impreciso do termo no decorrer de toda a obra e que se apresenta de modo particularmente conflitante no capítulo X. ABSTRACT This paper investigates the tension between the ontological priority of being over beings and the phenomenological requirement of a necessary connection between both in Martin Heidegger’s thought. In Being and Time (1927), the a priori designates the anteriority of being as the condition of possibility for beings, with time characterized as the “a priori of the a priori.” However, insofar as being and time are bound to the existential structures of Dasein - namely, the understanding of being and originary (...) temporality - an idealist reading becomes possible, according to which being would depend exclusively on Dasein. I argue that Being and Time demonstrates the necessity, but not the insufficiency, of the existential analytic for elaborating the question of being, leaving unresolved the problem of the connection between being and beings beyond Dasein’s comprehension structures. Drawing on Heidegger’s interpretation of Kant, especially in What is a Thing? (1935-36), I contend that the radicalization of finitude - understood as receptivity rather than anticipatory resoluteness - provides the answer: by characterizing sensible intuition as constitutive of all experience, Heidegger ensures that the a priori remains tied to the phenomenal encounter, thereby blocking the possibility of ontological idealism. Research involving transgender and gender diverse people (TGD) increased in the last years, mostly concerning healthcare associated to this population. Few studies dedicated their analysis to the impact of parental support on transgender people, even though this is an important aspect in creating a safe environment on which these individuals can build their identity. In addition, the link between family support, TGD identity and homelessness is not completely established. Thus, due to the specificities of the family context of TGD individuals, (...) the aim of this study is to investigate the association between family support and TGD in different moments of the process of gender affirmation. In addition, this study also aims to explore the relationship between a lack of social support and low self-esteem, home abandonment, and dwelling in the street. The survey was designed based on the TransPULSE project and was made available in electronic format. The sample was constituted of 423 TGD residents in two Brazilian states. A Structural Equation Model analysis suggested that the impact of gender affirmation status on homelessness was mediated by parental support, through self-esteem, and the need to move from home. The association between the status of the gender affirmation procedures, family support and self-esteem was significant and indicated that the further TGD individuals advanced in gender affirmation, the more self-esteem and family support they would have. The association between family support and self-esteem indicated that family support was associated with higher self-esteem. Low family support was associated with the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status and there was also a significant correlation between low self-esteem and the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status. Finally, homelessness was associated with the willingness to move with a large effect size. Limitations include the sample that was constituted by individuals with Internet access and who had more contact with TGD communities. The findings indicate directions for interventions involving TGD people and their families, considering the parental relationship as a critical variable to improve TGD quality of life in the process of gender affirmation. Milk is generally analyzed on a monthly basis in dairy animals under official recording schemes. Other than conventional composition, nowadays one sample of milk can provide a variety of interesting phenotypes. This has been mainly possible thanks to infrared spectroscopy, a rapid and low-cost technology implemented worldwide and accurately recognized as a gold standard for some traits (e.g., milk gross composition). Milk is secreted by the mammary gland and mirrors the physiological and metabolic status of the animal. Potentially, milk spectra (...) can be used to predict biomarkers useful for health status assessment and fitness monitoring, such as ketone bodies, urea nitrogen, fatty acid profile, minerals, and protein fractions. In addition, it has been demonstrated that traits not directly measurable in milk can also be predicted with sufficient accuracy, e.g., blood parameters, reproductive traits, body weight, methane emissions, and feed intake. Finally, devices collecting milk spectra are commonly equipped with a flow cytometry machine that can quantify the milk somatic cell count (SCC), widely adopted as an indicator of udder health by farmers, veterinarians, researchers, and breeders. Therefore, milk sampling is a non-invasive procedure that allows for collection of phenotypes even at a population level. This medium can be exploited for diagnostic purposes in dairy species to track difficult-to-be-measured features at individual level, such as health, fertility, and efficiency. (shrink)

Investments in education are growing, not only in the first phase of life but also throughout life. However, the million-dollar question is: does more education make us happier? The relationship between education and happiness is assessed on two levels: at the micro level of individuals and at the macro level of nations. At the micro level, the results of 86 studies were analyzed, in which most results point to a weak positive correlation between happiness and years of schooling (r = (...) +0.06). This is considerably lower when controlling the values for the effects of education, such as income (partial r = +0.02). At the macro level, the correlation between education and happiness in 146 nations was assessed, and a strong positive relationship was found (r = +0.61). These results suggest that the effect of education on happiness is indirect and not direct; people who live in modern societies are happier, but this means that they need a higher level of education. Apparently, education alone is not satisfactory, at least not the school education that has been provided thus far. (shrink)

The paper introduces the concept of relativistic ontological realism, and the corresponding notion of relativistic realization of objects. The conditions that allow for the relativistic realization of objects are determined. In particular, the paper indicates the way the imposition of organizational structures on already existent objects supports the relativistic realization of new, more complex ones. A type-theoretic presentation of the principles of relativistic ontological realism is given in the language of predicate calculus, making use of the notion of typed world (...) and the condition of effectiveness in the determination of the existence of objects. Two case studies illustrating the way the notion of relativistic ontological realism supports ontological analysis are presented, both concerning the ontology of computations, more specifically, the relativistic realization of computational levels in computational systems. The first case study deals with the realization of logical circuits through structural arrangements of electrical circuits. The second, with the realization of software systems through computer programming. A conception of the mechanics of the relativistic realization of objects, taking the imposition of organizational structures on previously extant objects as its basis, is proposed and briefly analyzed. Resumo: O avanço da internet propiciou uma situação em que a visibilidade que alguns indivíduos, grupos e entidades alcançam dentro de determinados círculos, e até mesmo em todo o globo, tem chegado a níveis de idolatria e reverência que só podem ser comparadas a um culto, uma religião ou seita. Essa construção de significados é processada através da chamada “autocomunicação de massa”, termo cunhado por Manuel Castells, na qual os próprios indivíduos estabelecem quem possui algum tipo de poder. E são (...) essas novas relações midiáticas que constroem novos ídolos para adoração, elevados da noite para o dia da condição de mortais a deuses. O que se pretende apresentar neste texto é como a Teoria do Mundo Ideal de Platão explica a criação de um novo paraíso, um local idílico e perfeito dentro da internet e como, neste “novo céu”, os usuários da rede estão entronizando esses novos deuses e, consequentemente, prestando sua adoração, alimentando e dando poder a esse panteão forjado a partir de likes. Em contraposição a essa situação, iremos entender como a proposta da inversão das ideias de Platão, idealizada por Nietzsche, pode nos ajudar a compreender este fenômeno social e, quem sabe, superar esta idolatria. O presente texto busca abordar, a partir da obra Capitalismo e Esquizofrenia, o problema do regime de violência historicamente específico do capital como relação social. Desde O Anti-Édipo, Deleuze e Guattari se esforçam para tematizar as relações sociais não só em suas especificidades, mas em suas diferenças de natureza. Apreender a forma das relações sociais em suas especificidades históricas implica, assim, apreender diferentes regimes de violências a partir dos quais tais relações sociais se estruturam e se reproduzem. No caso do (...) capitalismo, trata-se de apreendermos qual é o regime de violência específico da forma-dinheiro como relação social. Nesse sentido, se torna necessário não só analisarmos a relação entre forma-monetária e produção, relação pela qual o dinheiro enquanto capital empreende seu processo de objetivação, produzindo a realidade sobre a qual se exerce, mas também a relação entre forma-monetária e anti-produção, que revela como tal processo de auto-objetivação do capital implica uma relação específica entre produção e morte, que é analisado por Deleuze e Guattari a partir do conceito de anti-produção. O artigo propõe analisar os diferentes sentidos históricos contidos na Segunda Consideração Extemporânea. Basicamente, o argumento nietzschiano acerca da palavra história desenvolve as seguintes explicações: contribuir no fortalecimento da cultura, tendo em vista o potencial inspirador que guarda, servindo de referência para o presente e o futuro; contrária a perspectiva anterior, caso feito o uso excessivo desse estudo acabaria gerando efeitos paralisantes na cultura. Além da crítica às pretensões histórico-científicas positivistas e hegelianas que delineavam os contornos da vida moderna, os (...) ensinamentos de Nietzsche podem ser entendidos como uma exigência clínica direcionando novos cursos para um mundo em franco declínio. In this paper, we examine the practice and promises of digital phenotyping. We build on work on the ‘data self’ to focus on a medical domain in which the value and nature of knowledge and relations with data have been played out with particular persistence, that of Alzheimer's disease research. Drawing on research with researchers and developers, we consider the intersection of hopes and concerns related to both digital tools and Alzheimer's disease using the metaphor of the ‘data shadow’. We (...) suggest that as a tool for engaging with the nature of the data self, the shadow is usefully able to capture both the dynamic and distorted nature of data representations, and the unease and concern associated with encounters between individuals or groups and data about them. We then consider what the data shadow ‘is’ in relation to ageing data subjects, and the nature of the representation of the individual's cognitive state and dementia risk that is produced by digital tools. Second, we consider what the data shadow ‘does’, through researchers and practitioners’ discussions of digital phenotyping practices in the dementia field as alternately empowering, enabling and threatening. Starting from the identification and characterization of three literary forms that coexist throughout Parmenides’ Poem, all of them plainly different from each other, it is proposed and demonstrated that such a variety of forms mirrors the delimitation of the different ways of thought and language elaborated by Parmenidic philosophy, in which at least two types of nature of knowledge must be recognized: the logical and the cosmological. The first, marked by a formally logical-argumentative speech which is given the name of (...) truth (aletheia) and whose way of thinking is exclusively noetic; the second, of a theoretical-descriptive nature, dedicated to the consideration of the movement proper to cosmic phenomena, whose devenir demands an equally mobile way of thinking (phronein). Este artigo traz, desde uma perspectiva lógico-hegeliana, uma proposta de articulação operatória das noções de interseccionalidade e lugar de fala, com as quais, muitas vezes, se realizam análises de discursos e de situações sociais. O fundamento da proposta é a sequência de silogismos de ideias que, derivados da Lógica de Hegel, estratificam a noção de mundo em três níveis: mundo do sujeito, mundo do gênero e mundo do espírito. O artigo complementa esse fundamento introduzindo duas operações, particionamento de ideias e (...) superposição de partições de ideias, com as quais é derivado o conceito geral mundo setorial. O artigo mostra, então, como as noções de interseccionalidade e lugar de fala podem ser articuladas operatoriamente pelas três formas particulares e estratificadas desse conceito geral: mundo do sujeito setorial, mundo do gênero setorial e mundo do espírito setorial. Based on the readings of the philosophers Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari and Michel Onfray, the present article aims to carry out a critical assessment based on what is meant by “control society” and then, inspired by the Nietzschean philosophy of “Super human” [Übermensch], verify the feasibility of flourishing a human type whose creative and courageous posture surpasses the most adverse hypotheses of postmodernity. That said, the research adopts the following method: first, succinctly, to present the development of the different record (...) productions, as presented in The Anti-Oedipus; second, after the Deleuzian work opens up the scope for thinking about the “schizo”, that is, the individual below the social impositions, we complement with the hypothesis of the onfraryan typology of the “condottiere”, making it a model of resistance and insubmission, inspiring, therefore, the possible appearance of a fourth record production analyzed by Deleuze and Guattari. This article presents what is understood as the “atheism of the French philosopher Michel Onfray”. To do so, become an investigation based on the work Treaty of Ateology in order to evaluate points of its reflections. Because Onfray blames Christian, Jewish and Islamic monotheisms for introjecting the consciences of guilt, sin and the pulse of death, preventing men from reconciling with what they understand as reality. The study of onfraryan philosophy does not yet lead to the thesis that its materialist (...) ontology presupposes the insertion of an ethical-hedonistic plan, capable of overcoming the psychological problems caused by monotheistic religions. In sequence, the critical analysis has the contribution of authors Irene Fernandez and Mathieu Baumier. The intention is to show how the arguments capable of pointing out a religious intolerance can also be motivated by the passionate contempt for religious life, consequently affecting the foundations willing to prove it possible to exist a world without gods, beliefs or religions.
