Abstract

This chapter focuses on the transparency problem associated with Evans. It defends an interpretation of Evans’s transparency observation on which it entails that, in coming to know by introspection that you are in a psychological state, you attend to the content of the state. It shows that the rationalist account may accommodate this observation if we refine the notion of a conscious state with which the account operates; in particular, if we assume that virtually all introspectable states are access conscious. The chapter contrasts this approach to transparency with alternatives due to Moran and Byrne.
