Abstract

Psychiatric coercion is a medical measure and therefore requires ethical legitimisation. This chapter examines the question of whether the ethical reasons given (e.g. coercion is for the benefit of the person concerned) stand up to empirical research. The comparison between ethical conditions and empirical data and conceptual issues (e.g. autonomy) leads to the conclusion that this is predominantly not the case.
