paperghostI've started watching MLP G5 on my lunch breaks. I judged G5 pretty harshly initially because I think the art style is bad, but I actually really liked the movie on rewatch! So I'm watching the Netflix series. The first mini movie for Make Your Mark was also pretty good, but now I'm at the 20 minute episodes. It's... okay so far. I still hate that this is a distant G4 sequel and I know there's going to be attempts with tying them together with Opaline (whose design is awful and a cartoonishly abusive mother). I saw the clips with Spike last year... What the fuck. It's really not that bad. But the style is soooo ugly, the Youtube show is even worse. :(
Equestria has smartphones and social media now. I'm glad the Mane 6 are dead and don't have to see this. I do like that earth ponies having their own earth magic is canon now, I fucking hated how the staff tried to wink nudge at bronies (canon should not interact with or be influenced by its fandom lol) while G4 aired but this was some nice ascended fanon.

Each and every one of the Mane 6 was markedly different, competent, with mane styles that were a direct reflection of their personalities and propensities. Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark was the embodiment of the magic of friendship: a star surrounded with one star for each of her friends. In Gen 5, the only memorable and fitting cutie mark is that of Pipp, a combo M and beamed eighth notes.
I think Gen 4 was more a hindrance to Gen 5 MLP than a help.

I like a lot of G5 designs, just not the humanoid faces and art style. The Youtube show is comically ugly too despite the concept trying to do the opposite of the "template" design.
