Ailz tells me that there are people out there in the world who call themselves "male lesbians".

No-one seems to know quite what they mean by it. And I'm not going to offer any guesses or suggestions.

I''m just happy they're causing confusion.

No idea where the Met Office and the BBC collect their weather data for Brizzle, but they are always wildly optimistic about how fast the temperature will drop in the evening. Like last night they said it would be 23C at 2200. However at that point it was WARMER outside my flat than it was inside. The inside temperature was 26C. Put some bloody weather stations in city centres! That's where most people live!

The bathroom is officially the coolest room in the flat. This is because:
- It's the last room to get direct sunlight (mid afternoon).
- Due to the layout of the loft, only half the bathroom roof has loft insulation above it. The rest of the flat has full insulation.
- It shares a wall with Charlie's flat and he has 'patio' windows which can let air in from floor to ceiling (unlike my pathetic 'upper pane only' windows.
- Wind seems to whip in the bathroom window much more vigorously than other windows. Must be some sort of crosswind effect from neighbouring buildings?

The flat cools better at night when there is what the forecasters call "a moderate breeze". If there is a "slight breeze" then it drops bugger all and it takes 3 fans to try and drag some cool air into the building.

Wed 8th July: interior started at 22.5C, rose to 25C. Outside was 29C.
Thu 9th: Flat interior dropped to 22.5 overnight. Rose to 26.5C. Outside was 31C.
Fri 10th: Interior dropped to 25C overnight (yup 25C). Rose to 27.5C. Outside was 33C.
Sat 11th: Interior dropped to 25C overnight. Rose to 28C. Outside was 31C. (Yup, it is getting cooler, but my top floor flat got hotter).
Sun 12th: Interior dropped to 24.5C overnight. Rose to 27C. Outside was 30C.
Mon 13th: Interior dropped to 23.5C overnight. Rose to 26C. Outside was 28-29C.
Tue 14th: Interior dropped to 21.5C overnight (because moderate breeze!). Rose to 25.5C. Outside was 29C.
Wed 15th: Interior dropped to 22.5C overnight. Rose to 26C. Outside was 29C.

The temperature the last few days has been approaching 100F, which is about as hot as it ever gets here. (We're in the first valley in from the coast; further in, it gets hotter, which is why we're not moving there.) The last couple of days I finally found it too difficult to bear, and I've been spending my whole daytime at air-conditioned public libraries, occupying my time by reading some of the books they have there.

I'm finding that several hours of coolth inures me slightly to the heat when I emerge out of it, but it's still tough. Reports say the temp will drop somewhat tomorrow; I sure hope so.

... and oh my LORD no wonder I kept putting it off or having anxiety about them or both.

Executive dysfunction is the worst but by god I'm gonna actually try to get something Done this year from the Paperwork that Haunts Me.

---

Today specifically, a bank errand I'm doing was Unsuccessful once again because of course they need More Papers I Don't Have Yet (that I need to go through a whole Process to obtain too).

I tried to research what would be needed for the Paper I Don't Have Yet, and as I was listening my brain basically Exploded because each requirement opened another can of worms of Paperwork I Haven't Fixed Yet.

I slammed my metaphorical hand on the "BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY" button in my brain and sent a message to the business compliance professional who handled my business registration years ago instead. :'D

I am unfortunately just going to pay the potentially big ADHD tax upfront to hire someone and outsource this to someone who Actually Knows What They're Doing because I just CANNOT. The paralysis is awful!! I have other things to do, like work on printshop orders so I can Live!!

I think I am going to have to slam my hand on said button a couple of times this year because the weight of it all is crushing me so hard.

(I don't have unlimited money unfortunately but it beats freezing and doing Nothing, including Printshop work, because I'm too paralyzed to do Anything.)

I have been putting off many of the Paperwork I Haven't Fixed Yet for years at this point. Saying to myself "I'll do it... eventually!" isn't working, clearly. :')

To my credit, government processes here are notoriously hard to understand and difficult compared to other countries. Still. STILL.

Wip Wednesday! No prompts last week-- hardly surprising-- but here's a little bit more of the mermaid story. It follows the previous clip I posted but I'm still working on the connecting tissue, so I'm not reposting anything for context. If you need any, I've gone back and tagged the previous parts as "mermaid story" for now.

.

Estelle doesn't go back down to the beach for some weeks and takes care to avoid any route that would take her past it. She cannot escape hearing the gossip, however.

Caleb has been stalking the beach in the days since they both saw the pendent and the mermaid who went diving after it. He sends the children scattering, they say, as he prowls through the wealth scattered in the sand. Sometimes he just stands there, staring out into the sea.

The mermaids, Estelle is given to understand, kick up a cacophony when he does. Their chittering sometimes grows even louder than the calls of their stolen voices. It is as if, one old woman declares in amazement, they are laughing at him.

No one mentions Millie's laughter. Estelle would think that she'd imagined it if not for the fact that she can still hear it sometimes on the breeze when she walks behind the row of houses that separate the main road from the beach. Even at the distance, she knows it.

It's almost a week before she realizes that no one mentions it because no one else recognizes the sound.

July AMA: Road Trips

Asked by [personal profile] author_by_night: Have you ever been on a summer road trip? If not, would you ever want to go on a road trip?

I've definitely been on summer road trips, mainly when I was younger. One big one that I remember (that we have home video of) is traveling across the country to visit my aunts and uncles. It took quite a long time to get there, perhaps a week? Aside from that, I've gone on some road trips since then that aren't as long, not always during the summer. I think the last one was to Los Angeles, which took roughly the whole day to get there.

Road trips are interesting because it really depends on who you're traveling with and how things are planned out, and how one can handle sitting in a moving vehicle for hours at a time if you didn't bring something with you to keep you entertained. It can be merely exhausting just sitting for hours at a time, and, because I live in America, while there are some interesting sights to see especially once you get to places you're unfamiliar with there are also prolonged periods of time where it's just a long stretch of road with nothing to see, that you'll be relieved once you see something like a rural area or a field and other pieces of nature and not just road and other vehicles. Plus there is also something really special about rest stops, those areas in the middle of nowhere.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (1999/2011, PSP) -- Have finished up with Caracol and gotten my last party member after fifteen hours of playtime. I continue to find this game pleasantly enjoyable! I've also discovered a comprehensive database of tidy dungeon maps, and even though it is entirely in Japanese, I am not deterred! I can read a map in any language! The fact that I can now make a beeline from maze entrance to boss makes this game so much more fun to play! (As a turn-based JRPG, it's not the worst -- the fusion combos are cool; the interface for setting up or interrupting autobattle is very seamless -- but the appeal of this game is not its combat.)

Persona 2: Innocent Sin

It was probably for the best that I had already been spoiled for all the Nazis in this game, because their mid-game appearance alongside a Mayan spaceship is extremely abrupt. But, as I think more upon it, I kinda like that excess. It's the end result of eldritch inscrutable creatures being forced to act through human teenagers to bring about the apocalypse. The lurid absurdity is the point. Nobody can beat sixteen-year-olds for being into "edgy" Nazi occultism and the Spear of Longinus and the idea that the Ancient-Maya-were-actually-aliens and every other supermarket tabloid conspiracy theory. (See also: all the Psychology 101 stuff with Jungian shadows.) If I had played this game as an actual teenager, I would have probably been completely hooked on it.

Tears of Themis (2021, iOS) -- Got a statistically improbable result in this gacha game today that a) delighted me and b) is impossible to explain to anyone who has not already attended the devil's sacrament of dumb gacha games. Since I have literally no one to tell about this incredible and meaningless event, I will commit it to you, dear diary.

I will definitely get the jpeg of the boyfriend that I have arbitrarily chosen as my favorite for the purposes of playing this gacha game )

Fannishness (or a lack thereof)

I swear that I'm going to force my brain to actually get back into properly doing fannish things again even if it kills me. That's my plan for this weekend, whether said brain likes it or not. I'm setting my alarm in the mornings on Saturday and Sunday, and I'm forcing myself to get up no matter how little sleep I get. I can always take a short nap in the afternoon if needed (also with an alarm).

I have approximately five million fic WIPs, but lately I haven't been working on anything that isn't specifically for an exchange. My plan is to to pick a WIP, open the file, and not allow myself to do anything else until I write at least 500 words. Minimum. I'm really hoping that will kickstart my muse if I'm not allowing myself to do anything else until I hit that goal.

We're also edging closer and closer to Yuletide season, so I really want to start re-reading/re-watching/etc. a few things now both for requesting and offering purposes. Reading is easier, since I can fit that in at work between calls and such, but the re-watching part is harder to fit into my schedule. I'm going to try to set aside time every day (within reason - Wednesdays and Fridays will probably be out since I have work all day and then D&D in the evening) for that purpose if I can manage it.

Not to mention that I still need to get caught up on Critical Role, especially since they're taking a break right now which is the perfect opportunity. I think part of my problem is that I left off when they were split into my least favorite group of the new campaign (The Seekers) so that's why it's been harder to convince my brain to just shut up and catch up.

My plan right now is that I'm going to watch the next episode (maybe tomorrow if my brain isn't mush after work? Saturday if it is) with a summary pulled up. That way I can more easily fast-forward if I get to a point where I've lost interest without losing track of what's going on, which is the biggest reason that I usually force myself to not fast-forward with Critical Role.

I'm not sure if any of those plans will actually work, but I'm going to try. Because lately it feels like all I've been doing is working, sleeping, and blinking only to find out that hours have passed without me accomplishing anything.

Accoutrements.

The air quality alert's got me pulling my Corsi-Rosenthal fan out from under my desk and cranking it on for the first time this season. It seems to be doing its job well enough - and, being a lot more modular than my standing fan, is easy to elevate and put just behind me for added breeze.

Meanwhile, in the opposite vein of not throwing things away, I pulled a few books off my shelf. Granted, I filled in the empty space immediately, and it's still me deciding against giving that space to what had already been there. Large-scale Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode guides, mostly. I don't think I'll be pulling them out for that purpose ever again. Might as well see about sending them off to a better home than this one. Same with the DVD sets. If there were still in-person cons, I'd donate them to the raffle or the swap table. Maybe I'll contact some podcast hosts for a charity drive.

But before then, waiting a little while longer to swap back to the tower fan so I can clear off the bed to start packing. It should be easy, since I already got the hardest part out of the way: picking out my books and loading up my MP3 player.

Last night I participated in an interesting local event called Common Ground, which invites people from across the political spectrum to discuss issues with the intent to illuminate and find commonalities, rather than persuade. The organizers (who themselves are two liberals and two conservatives) very carefully balance the attendance list to ensure an equal number on both sides. The meeting started with brief introductions, and then we split up into tables of 4, 2 liberals and 2 conservatives (our nametags were coded by color) to discuss a question. After a set time, we mixed up and sat at tables with different people, and discussed a second question, and then all got together to share insights.

The first question was about identifying the core beliefs of liberals and of conservatives (and spoiler alert, we all agreed on pretty similar beliefs), and the second was about the relevance of the Constitution today, and if it should be followed strictly, modified, or scrapped. To my surprise both of the conservatives at my second table said they don't trust the current president to lead any revision of the constitution, and when we discussed things as a group it was clear that nobody is a fan of the current administration. Which, I guess should not have been a surprise, because part of the ground rules were, as alluded to, respect for other points of view and no attempting to argue your point, and as a result those who attended were pretty much normie Republicans, unaffiliated leaners, and mainstream Democrats, with no Trumpers (we have those here) or leftie anarchists (we have those, too).

Anyway, it was interesting and enjoyable, and it definitely made the point that "the other side are people too." I'll probably try to attend again - they put these on every few months.

What I've recently finished reading:

Stiletto by Daniel O'Malley, the second Checquy Files book. This one goes a little harder on the body horror than the first (for plot reasons) but it's still leavened with enough humor that it didn't hit my ick button. The humor mostly comes from the extremely silly powers some people have, as well as from the dry observations by Myfanwy and others. As in the first book, there is a very shippable f/f pair (as well as Shantay from book 1 showing up at the end, yay, and not doing anything to shatter my Myfanwy/Shantay inclinations!) though again it's all just subtext.

Also, I'm reading the collection Lake of Souls by Ann Leckie, and so far I have read:

"Lake of Souls" - this is the title story, and I liked it a lot, mostly because I am a sucker for stories with multiple POVs in which each character is a different alien with a different culture and thus each has a very very different perspective. But I also liked the aww-factor of the outcome.

"Footprints" - horror, I guess? I think I missed the point.

"Hesperia and Glory" - this is fun and harks back to Golden Age Sci-Fi. Is Mr. Atkins mad, or a Martian?

"The Endangered Camp" - this made me think of Tom Toner's The Promise of the Child in which, also, the dinosaurs escaped the extinction event in a spaceship. Not bad, not my favorite.

Speaking of short story collections, I DNF'ed The Age of Calamities by Senaa Ahmad, which I learned about from a review of The Beheading Game by Rebecca Lehmann (which I reviewed here) as the reviewer felt that the story "Let's Play Dead" was a better take on a mysteriously alive post-beheading Anne Boleyn. Unfortunately, stylistically it very much did not work for me (literary, dense, weird); I started and abandoned two other stories in the collection and then decided to give up on the collection entirely.

the England men's football semi-final, during a heatwave, is a terrible time to have a migraine that you refused to medicate until rather later on in proceedings than Might Have Been Wise.

nevertheless SOME GOOD THINGS:

  • finished sorting through all the redcurrants, and also, fridges are Magic actually
  • quantifiable Gym Progress, and also I am pretty sure the hair tie I found at the bike racks is the one I lost at the bike racks on my way out on Monday
  • tinned pears and almond butter; strawberries
  • temperatures finally starting to properly come down
  • found the hairbrush that has been missing since last event! ... at the bottom of the backpack I apparently never fully unpacked.
