Rental tool
Rental tools are a type of tool in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that can be temporarily used in locations where the player is unable to bring their own items. Most rental tools can be borrowed from Lloid, either on Tortimer Island, during certain tours, or during a dream. Others are automatically equipped by the player during tours which require their use. Once the player leaves the area, any rental tools are automatically removed from their pockets.
Availability
On Tortimer Island, the player can borrow a 
rental shovel, 
axe, 
net, 
rod, and 
wet suit from Lloid. During a dream, the player could borrow a rental shovel, axe, net, rod, or 
can. Since the rental can could only be obtained during dreams, it is no longer obtainable following the discontinuation of Nintendo Network on April 8, 2024.
Lloid's rental selection during tours varies:[nb 1]
- Hide-and-seek and scavenger-hunt tours: rental shovel, axe, net, rod, and wet suit
- Gardening, ore-collecting, and fossil-finding tours: rental axe, net, and rod
- Fishing, bug-catching, and diving tours: rental shovel and axe
- Balloon-popping tours: rental shovel, axe, net, and rod
- Maze-navigation tours: rental net
Certain tours start with a rental item automatically equipped:
