The women of Andor - Bix
Jun. 1st, 2025 03:54 pmI'll start off being honest: I did not relate to Bix. She's a great character and a complicated woman, but she wasn't my favourite.
That said, there is such awesome writing on this show because this was a different character yet again. An ordinary person who never signed up for the Rebellion, but got dragged into it because of who she knew. Tortured because of an ex. And then wanted to fight back.
She wasn't your traditional hero, though. She was haunted by her experiences - and that is so very real. I loved that we saw actual consequences for the trauma that people go through - and when she was taking drugs to sleep, that made so much sense. I do wish she'd left Cassian at that point; it was clear this life wasn't good for her. (I am so glad she got her revenge.)
You may be wondering, did I resent her because she interfered with my 'ship?
I am a huge, huge Jyn/Cassian shipper. I have read countless fics about them. I have even written my own. I saw so much chemistry between those two, chemistry that I did not see between Cassian and Bix, and this is where my feelings are very complicated.
When we met Bix, she and Cassian were broken up. They got back together offscreen, when she was recovering from extreme trauma. That is not a healthy start to a relationship. More than that, they were in a very bad place together on Coruscant.
Things improved on Yavin, but I never saw them as great loves of each other. They were two people who were great friends, who turned that into a romance. There was love and support, but was there passion? (I didn't see it.) And that's okay, I am sure there are many couples out there who have this kind of relationship and are quite content. But I really do see them as having come together through circumstance, in a war, and I think they BOTH deserved more.
I admire Bix for leaving. She did the right thing there.
There's a war on in this timeline and neither Bix, Cassian (or Jyn) has the space to think about a relationship. That's the sort of thing that doesn't fit. With a child on the way, yes, Bix had to get out. If Cassian had known he was going to be a father - well, that's a tough one. Focus on your own needs or focus on the needs of the galaxy? Thankfully Bix didn't give him that choice.
She put the needs of others above her love for Cassian.
But...she didn't stay in touch.
And this is where I very much see this as a permanent break-up. Okay, Cassian didn't have a say in the matter, because Bix decided for the both of them, but it was the right decision. As I said earlier, I saw their relationship as one that happened because of circumstance. It was easy to be together; they knew each other, they had a history. But "easy" doesn't always mean that it's going to last.
I don't see their relationship lasting, even if they were reunited after the war. Oh, Cassian would stay, because it was the "right thing to do" (for his child) but let's compare Cassian with Bix to Cassian with Jyn.
Jyn and Cassian had chemistry. A shared vision. They just seemed to fit so well together. Would it be a lasting love? Well, we never got to see that. But those few short days (weeks?) they spent together... THAT I could believe.
And it's weird for me to write this - again, bringing my personal experiences into it. Every romance in my life started with a bang, like Jyn and Cassian (instant chemistry). The one that lasted - well, we still have that great chemistry and an enduring friendship. So I guess I'm also putting my own interpretation on this.
I know there are a lot of people out there who think that Bix was the love of Cassian's life and that she will be heartbroken to hear that he died. I disagree. She'll be sad, yes. But she made decisions for herself, to leave, to give her child the very best chance at life. And that was the right thing to do.
(A lot of this discussion is about my preference for the Jyn/Cassian 'ship.)
