I discovered that Stop and Shop carries the Tazo unsweetened passion tea concentrate, so I bought it and a container of Newman's Own pink lemonade, and today I mixed them over ice and it was delicious! Definitely recommended. I might even make the lemonade myself at some point, but the Newman's was on sale, so it seemed like a good deal.

I also got a box of Jiffy because I just want some damn corn muffins and nothing else I've tried has turned out well, so we'll see if it really does work.

That's my exciting Friday night. *g*

I did end up going to bed super early last night - I hit the sack at 8:30 pm and slept, with minor interruptions, until 8 am, and it was fantastic. I don't know why I was so exhausted yesterday, but I'm glad I didn't try to fight it like I normally would to stay up until my usual bedtime.

My meetings next Tuesday have all been cancelled, so I've added the day to my vacation next week, so I'll be in Monday and then done until the next Monday. I also discovered I had booked 2 separate optometrist appointments, so I cancelled the one next Thursday and will go in August as usual.

My plan this weekend is to bake a blueberry crumb cake* to take to my brother's on Sunday for our birthday bbq, and then make a key lime pie for myself on Tuesday, since my birthday is Wednesday. I haven't figured out what I'll make myself for dinner, but that is always the less important part of things to me. As long as I have a good birthday dessert, the dinner can be anything.

*Note: it will be an orange blueberry crumb cake since my sister does not like lemon. We'll see how it goes!

I am also once again waiting for the cleaning service to let me know if they are coming on Monday or not. They did not come this past Monday since I said it wouldn't work for me, but then there was radio silence, so today I reached out again, but have not gotten an answer. I appreciate the work they do immensely. I just wish they were better at communicating!

My dental appointment went well - it was just a cleaning! - but they still want me to come every three months instead of twice a year. Sigh. Anyway, the appointment was timed so that I did not have coffee or breakfast beforehand, and didn't get home until a little after 1 pm, so I should have just had lunch. But I was so tired that sleep won out over food and I ended up taking a THREE HOUR tour nap. I did finally eat, but now I'm like, maybe I should just go back to bed? Idk.

Anyway, it's Wednesday and I have read some books!

What I've just finished
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. This was enjoyable but very low-key, even at the climax.

Long Live Evil and All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan. Hiilarious and very genre-savvy portal fantasy. I enjoyed both books and am hoping the third one sticks the landing. Sadly, it's not due out until next summer. Alas.

What I'm reading now
Dead Hand Rule by Max Gladstone, which is the third (and final?) book in the Craft Wars trilogy? series? Idk. I'm enjoying it but he is pulling people from all over the first series and I don't always remember who they are since it's been a while since I read those books.

What I'm reading next
As ever, it is a mystery.

I meant to post last night but I could barely keep my eyes open so I went to bed early (and missed a super rare Mets comeback in Atlanta!) and slept for 10 glorious hours! I felt great at work today, and got some stuff done, and made some suggestions about the September board meeting agenda that I am sure the CEO and the Chair will not like, but they wanted to get radical and also not overrun the meeting time by 45 minutes again, and I offered a good way to do it to my boss. We'll see if anyone bites.

I am off tomorrow for the dentist - it should just be a cleaning (though I am braced to hear I need yet another crown) but I am always so tired when it's over. And my team meeting on Tuesday got cancelled so I am tempted to take next Tuesday off since I'm already off Wednesday (my birthday), Thursday, and Friday of next week. My boss was like, sure! but I'm still thinking about it.

I thought I had something else to post about but I can't remember... oh right, I finally watched Project Hail Mary the other night. I enjoyed it but it was too long. And there was not enough Eva Stratt, who was the best thing in the movie.

The cat with the bandaged paw has figured out how to get the bandage off, even though he can't get his mouth to that paw thanks to the cone of shame flower petal stuffie he's wearing around his neck. His learning curve seems to be exponential? Not sure what the right term is, but basically, he's getting quicker about removing it each time I rebandage it.

Thankfully the paw seems to be healing well. The only real reason for bandaging it at this point is to keep cat litter out of it until it's healed enough. And to protect it from whatever else he might get into--these cat brothers are less than a year old, so they're constantly exploring.

What else? Currently avoiding packing for the next trip. Trying to clean things up enough for the house/cat-sitter to not feel surrounded by STUFF. Before the whole "time to pack for another trip" started, I was trying to unbox and even hang up pictures--which hasn't actually happened yet, so there's a whole pile of things I want to decorate with that will probably end up shoved against a wall, I guess.

Given that part of the next round of travel will involve +8 hours on a plane each way, not to mention layovers (I no longer live close to a large airport, so I'm stuck with layovers these days), I might be writing more soon.

Interesting to note that the Person of Interest fandom is relatively active (as measured by new fic being posted) for a show that finished its network run in 2016. While the fandom for the film The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (again, as measured by new fic) is almost nonexistent at this point. Too bad for me, I guess, because I have two more fics in mind for the movie. Oh well! I'm hoping to finish them anyway!

Theme: Unreliable narrator

Summary: Izzy has spent years at Edward's side. The occasional petal here and there, the intermittent rasp that makes itself a permanent home in the hollows of his throat, the cough that comes and goes; it's all worth it, to be the person Ed turns to. It's a price he pays willingly.

Now, though. Now, Izzy knows what love looks like on Edward Teach, and it is soft and sweet and open and nothing like what Izzy has ever been able to give. Izzy's place is at Edward's side, and it's killing him.

That's okay. He's always wanted to die for something that matters.

Reccer's Notes: Izzy has hanakaki disease, and I love how the author writes it likes it's an almost chronic illness.  Izzy is an unreliable narrator in how he thinks about Ed and Stede and their motivations.  We as the reader can tell by their actions that their intentions are not what Izzy probably thinks, but Izzy's thought's are very much coloured by the experience he is going through and he's not seeing things for how they truly are, and of course he refuses to talk to Ed about his feelings and what going on, which only makes everything worse.

One note, this is canon-divergent after season one.

Had a couple of baking fails this weekend, so I guess it's granola bars for breakfast this week! Oh well. Eventually I will bake those myself too, but for now, store-bought is fine. *g* Luckily, this hoisin garlic chicken (NYTimes gift link) turned out well. I added soy sauce in place of salt, and also a sprinkling of Chinese five-spice powder instead of red pepper flakes, and it was delicious. And I have leftovers enough for a couple more meals. I also made bacon this morning, so it'll be another week of chicken bacon ranch wraps for lunch. Uh, not the hoisin chicken, though. Perdue short cuts roasted chicken strips.

And I had the first plums of the summer this weekend and they were so good. Plums! I love them so much! Cherries have also been good, but are much more expensive. And I figured out a use for the leftover seltzer for when Friend L was here - it's a good vehicle for the electrolyte powder I otherwise don't end up using, and this weekend it came in handy.

In other news, this morning, my cleaning service texted me asking if they could come tomorrow. I responded promptly saying, no, but I was available on these other dates. They have not responded. So now I'm like, are they coming tomorrow? Do I have to be ready? Because I am not ready and that is why I said no. Ugh. So now I will scramble to get ready and they won't come. Bah.

Things I have watched since last post (I am basically an anime watching machine right now):

Sasaki and Miyano, a high school set BL about Miyano, a boy who likes reading BL manga but is sure he's totally straight, and Sasaki, his dreamy sempai who thought he was straight until he met Miyano and is now borrowing BL manga from him to read and trying to be cool about his gigantic crush. This is a pretty cute anime, TBH. Miyano is so worried all the boys at their all boys school will not be cool with Sasaki now that he's reading BL, and constantly worried about exchanging books on the sly, and struggles to believe he's now sharing an interest with him!!1! Meanwhile, Sasaki is constantly going through the deepest erotic torment over the most innocuous nonsense.

There's this whole arc after Sasaki confesses his feelings where Miyano wants time to figure out his own, but once he finally figures them out things keep getting in the way of his return confession!! It wasn't too dragged out, so I found it kind of charming, and I appreciate that this is a story where the teens get to be horny but the focus of their feelings is actually based on a shared interest and the friendship they've formed.

• To the end of season 2 of Kimi ni Todoke, and given what I've heard of season 3 sounds frustrating, season 2 seems like a good end. They're together, yay! Let's not look beyond that. There are cute things about this, and I do like how much focus is put on the friendships Sawako forms. But also the misunderstandings drag on just that bit too long (the bit where they both confess they like each other but somehow both still feel rejected is excruciating), and it really does remind me of the things that annoy me about shoujo romance.

• Season 2 of Hana Kimi came back and dropped the first two episodes, so I watched and enjoyed those. The OP and ED are so much better than last season's. I appreciate that this adaptation goes through the events of the manga at a fast clip, so it feels like things are actually happening.

• Currently watching The Betrayal Knows My Name, which is such a style of anime that isn't made any more, and I'm having a great time. All the rose and bloody thorns and chains images in the OP, A+ Everything is cool hair and sad superpowers dark fantasy and nothing hurts.

I also read all of:

Given by Natsuki Kizu, to see how different it felt from the anime. There are some interesting differences, some of them just by the nature of the format, I think. Uenoyama's sister doesn't get any more depth of characterisation in the manga, but it feels more natural in this format, whereas in the anime it felt like she ever needed to be properly expanded or excised from the story. The awkward encounter between Akihiko and Haruki doesn't feel as non-consensual in the manga, which is interesting, because it definitely felt non-consensual in Given: the Movie. Though it may just be the translation I read? Either way it's good that Akihiko spends so much time afterward trying to get his shit together to make amends & etc. I do feel like the anime having actual music (that I really enjoy) adds a lot to the story, but that's natural given it's about bands and the love of music. It turns out I hate the get together between Hiragi and Shizasumi equal amounts in either version, because it basically involves Shizasumi pressuring him into sex. In the anime, though, when Shizasumi says he thought Hiragi was in love with Yuki it felt like it came out of left field, because Hiragi seemed to have paid more attention to Mafuyu, whereas in the manga I at least get how Shizasumi believes it.

I was 12 in 1976, I remember the excitement of celebrating that the country was 200 years old. Everyone seemed united in joy. I don't remember specific events, I'm not sure if my family did anything, only the overwhelming enthusiasm for acknowledging the anniversary.

I don't feel any of that excitement this year. Most of the references, jokes, etc., about the 250th anniversary focus on whether we'll survive as a country. I share the stress and concern. Our government is doing many horrible things that violate what I understand to be our values.

And yet, I have to believe that we'll get through this disaster, that at some point, we'll again have a government that believes in protecting and supporting all of our people, not just the Epstein class of grifting oligarchs and pedophiles. I can't accept our future is all chaos and destruction, so my fingers are crossed and I keep writing postcards to voters.

For the love of our country and the entire world, please vote, and vote in a way that constructively stops Republican enablers of the orange felon getting elected. Please.

Anyway, my house is clean, food is ready to be prepped. There's a neighborhood parade tomorrow and I will get lunch from a food truck. Then 13 people (though my nephews are Swifties, so now 13 is a lucky number) will come to my house for dinner and fireworks. The cats will be trapped inside all day, which they won't like but will appreciate when the noise starts. It should be a nice day and I will be celebrating the future. I hope all Americans enjoy the holiday.

Reccer's Notes: The best example of the "unreliable narrator" tag I've ever seen. Bruce's actions are unequivocally terrible, but because the fic is told from Jason's perspective and Jason genuinely doesn't believe there's anything wrong with their relationship you start questioning your own judgment too. Chilling. Absolutely amazing, but chilling.

Also, my internet and cable went out for several hours this afternoon, I'm guessing because of the heat? but I was able to use my phone as a hotspot, so it didn't deter me for long. *wry* I took today off because originally I was supposed to be dog-sitting at my sister's before plans changed, and I decided to keep the 4-day weekend. I'm glad I did. I like my job and I mostly like my coworkers, but I am so tired of people asking me for things. Hopefully, I can get a bit of a respite and a reset.

    What I've just finished
Six of Crows: A Darker Shore: Letters from Ketterdam by Leigh Bardugo. I don't know why the title is longer than the short story but I loved it! It's an epistolary story, using an investigation of the mysterious captain of The Wraith (tall ships!!!) as the framework, and letters between Kaz and Inej make up many of the documents the investigators are using. Ugh, I love them so much! spoilers )

I really hope this isn't the only time Bardugo chooses to revisit the Dregs and Ketterdam, because I would pay full hardcover price for a full-length, getting the band back together heist novel.

    What I'm reading now
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. I'm enjoying it but I only have a very vague recollection of what happened in the main trilogy, so some of it is probably going over my head. And I also realized I haven't read Translation State so hopefully that is not to relevant to this one. I do enjoy how Leckie plays with POV though.

    What I'm reading next

Our theme for July is unreliable narrator!

An unreliable narrator is one you just can't trust—or shouldn't—whether you know it or not. They may be lying (to the text or to themselves), purposely withholding information, or just not in a position to fully appreciate the situation they're in because of a limited perspective, such as with child, animal, or object narrators.

The tag for this round is: theme: unreliable narrator

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance. “Shane,” he said, and wanted to sag against the glass with relief. “What happened? Is something wrong?”
    “Not! Any moooooooore.”
Ilya swallowed. Shane hadn’t gotten any quieter in the past seven hours.
“Why are you calling me? You need to be resting,” he said, and it sounded softer than he’d meant it to.
“I forgot to tell you something. Important.”
“You should not be telling me anything, you should be—”
“My cottage has really good water pressure,” Shane announced.
Ilya stared out the window while a small plane taxied past.
    “What?”

Shane's cottage has a lot of amenities, and he needs to tell Ilya about all of them.

Reccer's Notes: This is a lovely, funny fic giving us more of "loopy on the good drugs" Shane from canon, after he takes the hit on the ice and is briefly in the hospital. Shane high on pain meds is adorable and Glittercity gives us more, as Shane tries to impress on Ilya how wonderful his cottage is, in the hope of persuading him to visit.
