The NCIS Reverse Challenge: Watch for sign-ups to open in November, stories to post in May.
You no longer need to have an LJ or DW account to participate in our challenges! You may now sign up and check in via email. Our claims are now run via email. Anyone who chooses not to make a community post to DW or LJ will need to send links to the mod via email on their scheduled posting date.
Feel free to spread the word around to those who may be interested. Our goal is to have a few new NCIS stories and artwork to share at the end of each challenge.
Art claims are now held via email. Participants are notified of their successful claims via email. Results are also posted at the DW and LJ communities.

***URGENT NOTE*** On 01/08/2026 - I am not currently able to create NEW posts to this community, but can update THIS post. I was NOT able to create a new post for the Reverse Bang Art Submissions. I keep getting a FORBIDDEN message. I will continue to TRY. I'm hoping this is a temporary glitch that they can resolve soon. This could also be an issue if I'm not able to post the claims images here. Again, I'll keep trying, but you can also check our DreamWidth community for any posts about the 2026 Reverse Bang. Please see the DW post for submission information: https://ncis-reversebang.dreamwidt…
You do not need to have a DW account to view community posts. DW still offers FREE accounts with no ads.

Artists should have the finished artwork back to the authors by 30 June. If any author has not received their artwork (or heard from their artist) by 1 July, please let me know.
Authors - Stories should be finalized by 30 June. You do NOT need to resubmit them to mod or artist.
Participants may make their posts between 12:01 AM and 6:30 PM YOUR local time.
Please watch for the posting guidelines, which will be posted prior to the first scheduled story.
Please keep in mind you can post your work in draft mode to AO3 up to 30 days in advance, then it's just a few clicks to put your work live on your assigned posting date.
REMINDER: We will have an earlier posting TIME again this year. This mostly came about through feedback over the years from readers who said it was very disappointing to wait all day long for a new story, only to have to go to bed before the story was posted. For this reason, we're going to move the time up so people have a chance to read your story and view the artwork the day it is posted. Posts must be made between 12:01 AM and 6:30 PM YOUR local time. PLEASE NOTE that 6:00-6:30 PM is considered a GRACE PERIOD. Please do not wait until the last minute to make your post.

The NCIS Reverse Bang rough drafts are due Thursday, 18 June 2026 (deadline is 9:00 pm your local time).
You are welcome to send your story earlier if you prefer.
You will need to send in your rough draft to be added to the schedule.
Artists: Please confirm back to your author that you received the story file. You should update your original banner with the author's name and story title. You may adjust the banner to better fit the story if you choose to. You are also welcome to create additional artwork (chapter headers, page breaks, additional banners, etc) if you would like to.
Authors: Please send a copy of your rough draft to your Artist and also to ncischallenge (at) gmail (dot) com (If you have two stories, please send them separately. Many thanks!)
When sending to your artist, please let them know exactly how your name and the story title should appear on the artwork (be sure to use the uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you want them to appear on the banner). Authors should have decided on a title by the time the drafts are due.
Stories do not need to be beta'd at this point, but must be at least 80% completed, and must be at least 5000 words (min for challenge), and close enough to being finished that you are certain you will complete it on time. The completed, beta'd versions are due by 30 June.
SUBJECT LINE: *Please put the number of your chosen artwork in the subject line, along with the author's name. You may also add the title.* Example 1: Artwork 2, Howling by Jacie Example 2: Artwork 2, story by Jacie You can find the assigned number for the artwork at the art claims link: Art Claim: Art Claims on LJ Art Claims on DW
TEMPLATE: *Please also include the following information in your email (NOT in your story file):
It's time to start putting a posting schedule together!
Since we have a small field, I thought I'd try combining the rough draft due date with the availability post.
Please limit dates you are unavailable to post to days that you will not have internet access (due to medical reasons, vacations, travel, long work days, etc.).
July 1-4 and 24-31 are blocked at this time - we will not be posting on these days.
All stories and artwork should be 100% completed and ready to post by 30 June.
The schedule will be posted prior to 1 July.
I haven't yet decided if stories over 25K will get 2 posting dates. I'll see which stories are eligible and if their authors are interested in a second day. Just to be clear, this has NOT been decided yet, one way or the other.
PLEASE NOTE: Stories must be posted no later than 6:30 pm YOUR LOCAL TIME on your scheduled posting date. Basically, they should be posted by 6pm, but I'm allowing a 30-minute grace period.
If you're a night owl, you may post as early as 12:01 AM on your scheduled date if you prefer to post late at night. You may also utilize AO3's draft mode to post your story up to 30 days early and just go in and change it from a draft to a live story within the appropriate time on your posting date.
If you miss your posting date, email me to discuss the situation, do not post on someone else's date.

Halfway done? Almost done? Finished? Off to your beta? Ready to post? Panicking yet?
REFERENCES, REMINDERS & LINKS:
We currently have TWO (2) unclaimed banners. Since the draft due date has been pushed out this year, I'll leave the claims open a little bit longer. If you would like to claim either of them, please review the banners at the art claim link, then email me at ncischallenge (at) gmail (dot) com, noting the number of the banner you would like to claim. If I don't respond to you in 2-3 days, feel free to use my other email or comment on any check-in post. With the due dates and posting dates shifting later, I will likely leave the claims open until well into May (or until they're claimed).
Authors are to write a minimum 5000 WC story based on the artwork and prompt they claimed. Your story must be based on NCIS characters, although crossover characters may be included if approved by the Artist. Gen, Het, and Slash are all welcome, as are all ratings. Stories must be beta'd.
Each team can decide how much they want to work together, or not. Authors do not need to wait until the rough draft due date to send their finished story to their artist.
Rough Draft Due Date: TBA June (currently looking at June 18 - SUBJECT TO CHANGE)
We must receive your rough draft or hear from you by this date. If we do not hear from you or receive your rough draft by this date, your claim may be reassigned to a backup author.
Rough drafts are ideally completed stories. They must be at least 80% finished and no less than 5000 words.
A rough draft must be received before you will be added to the posting schedule. Rough drafts do not need to be beta'd.

Can you believe that in a regular year, rough drafts would have been due either this weekend or next? Time has been flying! It's already been about a month since our previous check-in. So how are you all doing?
Panicking yet? Words flowing? A quarter done? Halfway done? Almost done? Finished? Off to your beta? Ready to post?

There are still 2 banners available to be claimed! Many thanks to all those who created artwork or made claims. As all signed-up authors have opted not to participate in ROUND 2, we are moving directly to ROUND 3, where any author may make a claim whether they've signed up or not.
Are you interested in getting challenge reminders via email? NCIS Challenge email is available! ( Collapse )
NEXT STEP
At this time, please contact the Artist/Author you are paired with ASAP (within the next couple of days). It is up to you as a team to decide whether you want to work together or not, and as to how closely you want to keep in contact. Some Artists have noted that they may be willing to offer cheerleading, brainstorming and possibly beta assistance. This will be noted on the Artist sign-up page. Authors are certainly welcome to ask Artists if they have any more thoughts or suggestions, or may see what the Artist thinks of any possible plot bunnies. In the end, the Author need only use the artwork and follow any prompt information posted at the art claim for inspiration. Please be respectful of each other.
Please always make sure that you are confirming receipt of any story or banner files you receive by replying to the email. A simple "GOT IT" or "THANKS FOR SENDING" works fine.
UPDATE: Art claims are now closed as of EOD May 31st
Greetings all!
Just a reminder that the author sign-ups will remain open until 9:00 PM CENTRAL TIME on Friday, 01/16/2026, with the claims running on Saturday, 01/17/2026. We currently have 7 pieces of artwork and 5 signed-up authors.
2026 NCIS Reverse Bang Author Sign-ups **CLOSED** ON DW or ON LJ
Our claims process is now run via email; however, the match-ups and claim requests will be posted at DW and LJ.
Ballots will be sent out Saturday morning to Authors who have signed up for the challenge, about 30-60 minutes before the claims are live. - Ballots may be filled out and submitted as soon as they are received. There is no need to wait for the official opening time for the claims. That time just means I'm not going to look at any of the ballots until the claims open.
Authors are welcome to request an 'early ballot' to be sent to them on Friday. - As claims are no longer FIFO, there is no advantage to having an early ballot. This allows people who might have conflicts on Saturday to send in their choices early if they prefer.
Please note: Claims run fast now and may close within 1-2 hours if all banners are claimed. - Last year people commented that there was too much time between receiving the ballot, and when claims were posted, and also too much time between rounds. - As we only have about a handful of people participating, I'm perfectly happy to move the claims along ASAP.
If you have questions feel free to email them to ncischallenge (at) gmail (dot) com, or post to the community's sticky post.
Ballots and claims instructions will be sent out to signed-up authors.
Signed-up authors should reach out to me ASAP if they have not received a ballot 30 minutes before claims go live (11:00 AM CENTRAL time or 17:00 UTC) on Saturday.
Signed-up authors may request an early ballot once artwork is posted.
Artwork will be posted anonymously for Authors to claim.
The order was chosen by a sequence randomizer.
Please ensure you are willing to work within allowed categories, pairings, prompt, etc. before making a claim.
Authors are to write a minimum 5000 WC story based on the artwork and prompt they claimed.
Your story must be based on NCIS characters, although crossover characters are okay if approved or allowed by the Artist. -Keep in mind this is an NCIS challenge, so this fandom (or NCIS character) should be a primary focus.
Stats: Reverse Bang authors signed up: 5 Reverse Bang artists signed up: 4 Artwork submitted: 7
***ART CLAIMS ARE NOW CLOSED***
As all signed-up authors have opted not to participate in Round 2, ROUND 3 is now open for any author, whether they signed up or not.
By making a claim, Author agrees to abide by the Mimimum Communication Expectations. ( Collapse ) -There is no excuse for not clicking 'reply' and typing in a few words within a reasonable timeframe. It only takes a few seconds.
To make a claim:
Please send an email to ncischallenge (at) gmail (dot) com.
Use "2026 REVERSE BANG CLAIM" as the subject line.
Note the number of the banner you would like to claim.
I will make the claimed artwork a bit smaller to make it easier to see that they have been claimed, while leaving the unclaimed art larger to show more detail. Click any image to see it full-sized!
Artwork Due: Wednesday, 14 January, 5:00 PM Central Time
Early submissions are welcome!
When you submit your art, please give the file your LJ, DW, or AO3 name. If you are submitting more than one prompt, please submit them separately and give the files your LJ, DW, or AO3 name, plus a number (1, 2, 3).
You are welcome to create as much art per prompt as you would like, but can only submit one piece of art per prompt for the claim. Please only send the one piece you want to submit for the claim for each prompt. While videos are welcome, please submit a still picture for the art claim. You may submit up to three separate prompts.
Even if you only submit one piece of artwork for a prompt, and there is currently no companion art, you are welcome to create accompanying pieces later and can update your submitted artwork as needed to go with the story.
As noted on the sign-up post, only ONE (1) banner per artist can contain crossover characters this year for the art claims (if a crossover story is written for any banner, it may be updated to include those characters if desired).
The art you submit for this challenge must be created by you. You may not submit someone else's artwork.
Please send submissions to ncischallenge@gmail (dot) com. -Subject line: Artwork (number) by (your LJ, DW, or AO3 name)
Please include the following information in the body of your email when submitting your artwork:
Artist name: LJ, DW, or AO3 name: Categories allowed (Gen, Het, or Slash): Pairing(s) allowed: Crossovers allowed (if any): Prompt (optional): Not allowed (optional):
You may note "any" or "no preference" for the category allowed. For pairings, you can list one pairing only or as many as you wish if you want to give the author a choice. You can note that crossovers are not allowed. If crossovers are allowed, please note which crossover fandoms you are willing to work with. You may include a prompt if you would like. You are also welcome to note if there is something specific you do not wish to see in the story. You do not need to warn for things that are normally warned for, such as rape, non-con, major character death, graphic violence or torture, extreme kinks, BDSM, MPreg, gender-swap, any sexual situations involving minors, etc. We understand it's difficult for an artist to capture all of these, and things commonly warned for may be triggery to some people. Authors must ask the artist if they would be okay with any of the above before including them. Authors are allowed to send in questions about banners BEFORE the claims go live, so please check your email on Thursday or Friday, just in case.
The prompt summary is completely optional. If provided, like the art, it would be up to the author to interpret and write what they choose. Some writers like to have an idea of where to go, while others like to begin from scratch. If included, a short, general prompt would be best. I would not make anything too detailed. Just 1-2 words or sentences. It should not be a full storyline. It can also just be a suggestion for a scene to use, a starting point for the story or as simple as "happy ending" or "first time/kiss".
