Victim of violence, slave to a mortgage: More women, more trouble

"It is better to grow up in a family with one father and one mother than in a family with a father and many mothers. That is what Prof. Alean Al-Krenawi of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found in a study of almost 1,000 Bedouin, about half of them from polygamous families.

He found that the average grade of pupils who grow up in polygamous families was 65, while that of those growing up in monogamous families was 75. Children in monogamous families also had greater self-esteem: Some 55% had high self-esteem as compared with only 25% of those from polygamous families.

Almost 85% of the wives in polygamous families reported that they had suffered from depression at some time during their lives, as compared with 63% of those in monogamous families; 75% reported that they were not satisfied with their married life as compared with 35% in monogamous relationships.

What was surprising was that the men in polygamous relationships were also not satisfied: Some 62% reported feeling depressed, as compared with 44% of those married to only one woman; and 70% reported that they were not satisfied with their married life, as compared with 30% of the monogamous men.

Galilee Bedouins claim Obama as relative

"JERUSALEM (JTA)—A tribe of Bedouin from northern Israel claims it is blood relatives of Barack Obama.

The 8,000-member tribe in the Bir al-Maksour village in the Galilee plans to hold a party in Obama’s honor next week at which they will slaughter a dozen goats to feed everyone, Abdul Rahman Sheik Abdullah told the The Times, based in London.

“We knew about it years ago, but we were afraid to talk about it because we didn’t want to influence the election,” Abdullah, a 53-year-old local council member, told The Times Wednesday. “We wrote a letter to him explaining the family connection.”

Abdullah told the Times that he has not heard from Obama or his campaign. He says he has pictures and documents to back his claim.

The tribe believes that Obama’s Kenyan grandmother is the descendant of an African migrant worker who was employed by a rich Arab sheik in British Mandate Palestine in the 1930s and a local Bedouin girl."

Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start."

Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job

WASHINGTON— African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation's broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, "It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can't catch a break."
