show me how you do that trick

laid one into some traffic

How was I supposed to know there was an HOUR-LONG episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine on last night? At least my DVR caught it. Oh, and I also watched the pre-Christmas episode, which I also didn't know had aired, because I thought the show had gone on hiatus!

Collapse )

I also watched the Sense8 Christmas Special, and that was the most Sense8 thing to ever happen. Collapse )

And earlier, I updated [personal profile] unfitforsociety for Yuletide 2016 with 34 recs in 23 fandoms:

* 3 Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
* 3 Ocean's Eleven
* 3 Six of Crows
* 2 Amelia Peabody
* 2 10 Things I Hate About You
* 2 Discworld
* 2 Stranger Things
* 2 iZombie
* 2 Luke Cage, 1 Spider-Man/Fantastic 4 crossover
* 1 The Thin Man and 1 A Year and a Day in Old Theradane
* 1 Life, 1 Push, 1 Miss Marple, and 1 Rivers of London
* 1 Earthsea, 1 Ghostbusters, and 1 The Golem and the Jinni
* 1 Brooklyn Nine Nine, 1 Dark Tower, and 1 Devil Wears Prada

And, for the January talking meme:

What book(s) have you re-read the most? for [personal profile] grammarwoman
With my Yuletide review this year, I think it might actually be The Tombs of Atuan. I used to reread LotR every year when I was a kid, and also the whole Belgariad/Mallorean, but that hasn't happened in ages. I reread The Outsiders about once a week for many, many weeks when I was in grade school and high school, and I try to do a reread of Foucault's Pendulum every couple of years. And there have been numerous rereads of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Absalom, Absalom (for different reasons *snerk*). But I think it's probably The Tombs of Atuan - it's short, I love it, I always find something new in it, and sometimes I have to reread it for fannish purposes. *g*

in the name of the sun

you're afraid that you will never be as strong as Darth Vader

Holy crap DW just ate MY WHOLE POST. TWICE. WHAT THE FUCK. Now I have to do all those links again? Come on, man. Ugh, it's because DW wasn't loading in Firefox and so I switched to Chrome and Chrome is always terrible and then it wouldn't load again in Firefox when I tried to preview it just refreshed the post entry page to blank. WHAT THE DICKENS.

I will be a lot less witty now, but still, it's been wine o'clock for few hours now, so maybe it was my error and also possibly I was never witty in the first place. We'll never know. *hands*

ANYWAY.

I made rice balls earlier today and yesterday I had the notion to bake instead of fry them - not for any health reasons, but just because I hate cleaning up after hot grease. Somehow I never seem to have a convenient empty coffee can the way my mother always did to get rid of it. I also don't like how it makes the whole apartment smell of stale grease for days, even with the windows open. So I poked the internet and found directions for baking them, and then I screwed up the rice anyway somehow. Maybe by using extra large eggs instead of regular large eggs? It was way too liquidy and the arancini barely held their shape, so there was no way they'd have made it through deep frying unscathed. Baking is fine, though they don't get that cripsy tasty outer layer. I had a couple for dinner and if I feel up to it, I'll have one at midnight, as per tradition. TRADITION!

Also TRADITION! The yuletide reveals:

Firstly, my wonderful gifts:

Ahahaha, I KNEW IT. I said to myself, says I, I bet this was one of the treats [personal profile] destina mentioned she'd written! <333

Thank you again, lovely yuletide authors!

As for my contributions:

with our way lit only by stars
Earthsea; Ged/Tenar, Vetch, Yarrow; g; AU; 4,580 words
There would be no great deeds on this trip, no wicked wizards or dark shadows to fight, only the balm of old friends long unmet, and the sea, as timeless and unchanging as it ever was.

So I'd originally bookmarked [personal profile] rachelmanija's letter to treat, and then in thinking about it more, I rejiggered my sign up to be a more likely match for her, and then when I actually got her, I panicked. SELF, I said, YOU CANNOT FUCK UP HER YULETIDE. THIS STORY CANNOT SUCK. and then I spent all of October writing "the dream of flight persists" and all of November and early December writing "Celestial Navigation" and then it was almost the default deadline and I seriously considered defaulting so she could get a good gift as I sketched out some potential ideas (I only reread the first two books, but it was lovely to revisit them, especially A Wizard of Earthsea, which I hadn't reread in years; I generally do a reread of The Tombs of Atuan every year or two, because it's one of my all time faves) and then on the bus going home one night, I wrote 500 words of a completely different story on my phone! And it became this story, which basically wrote itself.

I figured it was obviously me? Middle-aged married people on a road (technically boat) trip with a title from a Tom McRae song! I did try to put stuff in that I knew Rachel would like - the food, Yarrow, the harrekki (though I was unable to figure out a graceful way to send Tenar home with a tiny dragon on her wrist). I'm pleased with how it turned out and she left me an amazing comment, so I'm calling this one a success!

Bait and Switch
Batgirl; Steph/Jason; pg; 4,024 words
His smile is warm, friendly, and she tries to fit it into what she knows of him--street kid, Robin, dead Robin, thug. Hero? Maybe.

Even Robins! Makeouts! Jokes about terrible creepy figurines! I was actually surprised at the response to this. I didn't expect anyone but the recipient to read it at all, and they liked it, so it's a win all around.

The Extraterrestrial Elf Emergency
The Middleman; The Middleman & Wendy Watson; g; 3090 words
"According to the HEYDAR, there's a disturbance of the peace at the Candy Cane Palace."

This was the story that took me six tries to write. [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing said, "'Up on the rooftop, click click click,' how is that not the opening line of a horror movie?" and I was like, YES but then I got stuck on the idea of writing something creepy/horror-influenced and that is not my genre at all and I couldn't get unstuck. I had the title and I knew it was an alien who didn't understand Christmas, but it wasn't until the middle of the night on 12/20, when I woke up going, "YES THAT'S IT" and sending myself a hilarious email ("burgermeister meisterburger" was autocorrected to "Urgent Leicester Sister Burger" which is what happens when you type in the dark without glasses on at 2 in the morning) saying that it had to be built around classic Christmas specials. And then it was easy enough to sit for a couple of hours and wite the story.

I'm a little sad it didn't even break 50 hits during the anon period, but writing a holiday-themed story is always risky, I guess.

If You Wear That Velvet Dress
Push (2009); Nick/Cassie; adult; 3610 words
Nick and Cassie occasionally pretend to be a couple. Nick tries not to think about wanting it to be real.

This was my last (and last minute) treat, and it probably could have used a little more time in the oven, as it were, but it turned out okay.

So yuletide 2016 was successful for me! I hope it was for everyone else, as well!

As for the other things I posted in December:

Celestial Navigation (at AO3)
Star Wars; Finn/Rey, Anakin; pg; 23,315 words
Finn and Rey's epic space road trip adventure, featuring pirates, kittens, and the Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker.

I love this story a lot okay. the secret plan to fight inflation! karaoke! swoop racing! pirates! kittens! makeouts! cuddling! I never expected it to be as long as it is, but I guess Finn and Rey needed to go on a bit of a walkabout to get their lightsaber crystals and also for Finn to start trusting Anakin. (I reject the Starkiller Base = Ilum theory, because it makes me sad to think that they couldn't go to Ilum and get their crystals. Um, the other thing about Ilum is addressed in the story.)

belief undoes your disbelief
Star Wars; Baze/Chirrut; g; 349 words
Baze believes in Chirrut and that's enough.

I would like to write more about them, perhaps after seeing the movie again and maybe reading some background materials.

Tomorrow will be the full writing year-in-review post. I hope you all are celebrating New Year's in the way most enjoyable to you.

Right now, I'm just going to hope this finally posts! *crosses fingers* Third time's the charm?

I think all my tabs with yuletide fic in them have now been closed (I still have a sea of Rogue One tabs to read through), so here's another set of recs:

A Year and a Day in Old Theradane

The Library of Hazar by [Anonymous]
"I’m the Duchess Unseen! I stole the sound of the sunrise and the tears of a shark. I borrowed a book from the library of Hazar and didn’t return it."

So how did that go, exactly?
Wonderfully in tune with both the setting and the characters of the short story.

*

I can't say any of the stories I wrote lit yuletide up, though at least one was recced, and possibly another one was because I was surprised at the response. But the other two...is it time for pity kudos yet? ;) One hasn't even broken 50 hits, which was surprising to me, because of the fandom, but who knows why people click or don't click on a thing. I surely don't. And I can't otherwise complain, so I guess I won't.

When she comes back the next week, there's a new book waiting for her, and a torch. She mentally congratulates Hopper for balancing sentimentality with practicality. The batteries won't last, not for ever but she uses them to finish the last of the book in the dark.

The note this time says: They miss you too.

Something howls in the distance, and she burrows closer into the tree roots in which she's hiding as she keeps reading about Neverland and Peter, a boy who never wanted to grow up living in a place he never needed to.

The Lost Boys are her favourite.
Eleven and Hopper contrive her way back from the Upside Down. Lovely.

objects in the mirror by [Anonymous]
Jonathan has no fucking idea why Nancy and Steve gave him the Nikon. He doesn't know why they're so insistent on seeing the pictures he takes, either. Lovely.

The Thin Man

"Nonsense," said Nick, handing him a glass of whiskey anyhow. "All you need is an amendment or two and that'll sort it right out. Here. Now, what brings you here to see Nora?"
Witty, fun case fic where Nora has to sort out a blackmailer. I enjoyed this a lot.

no thought was put into this

Ugh, I came back to work to find 197 emails to be sorted through in my inbox. The inability of people to reschedule a meeting without me is apparently epic. Luckily, boss1 is out and boss2 is relatively self-sufficient (I have a new i-don't-know-if-she's-my-boss person, but she's out today, though very active on email, telling me how to do my job and let's not discuss that right now), so I've just been sorting and replying and trying to reschedule, though of course everyone wants every meeting to be in the first week of January and there are only so many hours available. *hands*

Christmas itself was lovely - I had some nice conversations with people, both serious and geeky (my older nephew's ride-or-die stanning of Anakin Skywalker never fails to be hilarious - he's 23, so the prequels hit him in the sweet spot of an influential age) - and ate a lot of lovely food and drank some really awful sangria - I understand using Coke to give it fizz and sweetness, but I shouldn't taste nothing but Coke in something you're charging me $9 a glass for! And then I came home yesterday afternoon and conked out for a while. I was off last week, but given everything I was doing (and how little I was able to actually sleep), it doesn't feel like it. I keep reminding myself this is a short week - I'm out again on Friday, and there's a four-day weekend and I'm not going anywhere or doing anything for New Year's Eve. It's going to be me, a bottle of wine, and hopefully the same Thin Man marathon on Channel 13 they show every year and it's going to be GLORIOUS. (Okay, sometimes it's the Marx brothers or Astaire & Rogers, but you get the idea.)

I haven't really had the time or the focus to dive deep into Yuletide, but here is a small set of recs:

iZombie

Now Draw Me Close by [Anonymous]
Five ways Liv Moore and Ravi Chakrabarti could have met and one way they met for a second time. Liv and Ravi have great chemistry and end up together in all sorts of alternate universes. Delightful!

*

The Golem and the Jinni

The Greatest City in the World by [Anonymous]
Lovely look at Chava and Ahmed over the years, after the end of the book.

*

Six of Crows

Her Heart is a River by [Anonymous]
Inej and Kaz have an adventure at sea. I enjoyed this a lot.

ebb and flood by [Anonymous]
You climb up, but if you fall, the Barrel will be waiting. The Barrel was there to break you. She had been bound to the ground for three weeks following, nursing a limp that looked like a mummer’s mockery of Kaz’s. She did stretches in her small room, all but climbed the walls. It wasn’t fear that she had felt, being trapped in the Slat, the Barrel, the Dregs (with Kaz), but a restlessness. A hum that settled in her bones, electric and pulsing, that made her fingers and her toes twitch.

This is what she learned, trapped: never let a thing break you here. Never let a thing hold you down and keep you.
Inej returns to Ketterdam. Sharp and melancholy.

Sail Upon the Land by [Anonymous]
Lovely story in which Inej reunites with the people she loves upon returning to Ketterdeam. ♥

*

As for my stories, I've heard from all four recipients and they seem pleased, so I'm calling it a success. I'd remind you about guessing, but I'd be surprised if most of you have even found any of them, let alone read or liked them. (I mean, there is the possibility they are just not very good, and in one case I might even agree that I probably shouldn't have gifted it to someone? Not because I think it's bad, per se, just odd; it's a story that didn't do what I thought it would when I started it, but I was bound and determined and so that's probably my fault. It was a treat and the person seemed to get a gift they really liked so it worked out, I guess. But anyway, yuletide is so huge, what are the odds you'd even find my stories, let alone guess they're by me?)

Hopefully at some point I'll be able to devote more attention to reading.

i believe in the faith that can save me

Back in 2012, there was a "Yuletides I have known meme" and I figured what the hell, I'd update it today:

2003-2011 (and with the correct links to AO3 for the ones previously hosted on the old yuletide archive here)

2016:
I guess we'll see! Hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of treats done this year, since I didn't last year and I kind of regretted it.

if it helps you breathe

my heart going boom boom boom

Ugh, I am developing a cold. I'm at the scratchy throat/constant runny nose stage. Just in time for the weekend. Bah.

On the upside, after I started some Yuletide canon review, I sketched out a few potential ideas and then on the bus last night, I wrote 500 words of a completely different story. On my phone! I promise it won't look like it was written on a phone on the bus when I'm done though. At least, I hope so. *hands* Of course, looking at canon again, I may have bungled the timeline? But I'll figure it out. I'm halfway there! Once the minimum word count is met, then I can start concentrating on everything else. I won't have to default after all! This is later than I usually start. I mean, usually I'm done by now and just doing the editing/revising, so I've been a little panicky. But I can do this. *determined face*

I don't envy the Yuletide mods, with the purging the assignments situation, though it seems to have been fixed after what I'm sure were heroic efforts by the AO3 volunteers. I never purged Remix assignments, even though occasionally people would ask me to for some reason I never understood. I always wanted to be able to see what had been done in previous years.

no retreat baby no surrender

I see my silver lining in the sky

Since I posted my letter pretty early, I'm linking it again for ~reasons: grifters, con artists, and thieves. I'm excited about my assignment - I had already bookmarked it for treating - though of course I probably won't start writing until sometime around Thanksgiving. *hands*

Why take advantage of the extra time when you can procrastinate now and panic later? It's always worked for me before.

Speaking of writing, it's hard, you guys. Coming up with something serious enough to require certain plot machinations but not so serious that you can't write a rom com around it is hard (I mean, there's also other issues? Which I may or may not talk about at some point? Idek). I think I figured it out though. I guess we'll see. On to the next conundrum, I guess.

***

Supergirl: The Adventures of Supergirl
To be honest, I did not watch all of season 1, but I understand they cleared the decks of villains so there's not a whole lot I needed to know to pick up with this episode, and seriously, if you are looking for an upbeat, sunshiney show to put a smile on your face, I recommend Supergirl. There's an occasional clunkiness to the writing, but I'm usually so utterly charmed by everything else that I just don't care.

Collapse )

So yeah, that was great. I really need an icon. I guess Kon will do for now. ♥KON♥

a woman's got ambition

the odds are never in our favor

In case you missed it, I posted a story over the weekend:

I'm crawling on your shore (@ AO3)
Six of Crows; Kaz/Inej; pg; 1,765 words
It's a good thing they're playing a long game.

Because sometimes you just want fraught touching and banter without overdosing on angst. *g*

Speaking of which, I finally watched Mockingjay Part 2, and on the one hand, Katniss feels less passive than she did in the book, which is good, but on the other, it still keeps the godawful epilogue. And I would still trade Peeta for Finnick or even Boggs in a heartbeat (certainly for Cinna). Finnick deserved better, and my dislike of Peeta will probably never go away. *hands*

It was interesting seeing Mahershala Ali as Boggs after watching Luke Cage, though. I hope he has a long and successful career, because he's very charismatic.

Anyway, I still think Catching Fire was probably the best of these movies? I really like the first two, anyway, and have watched them quite a bit. The latter two, not so much.

*

ETA: Yuletide assignments are out! Holy crap! I got the one I was hoping for! Now just to figure out what to write.
