up against your will

When I was all excited and squeeful about Bela in season 3 of SPN, I had to put up with people repeatedly slagging off on her my comments, even after I specifically and repeatedly asked people not to. It annoyed me, but I still enjoyed the character a lot and wanted to talk about her. So I did. (and I would be willing to bet that if I didn't make this aside, someone would comment to this post telling me why she didn't work, or why they hated her, and basically why I was wrong to love her, and in the next breath tell me why I should learn to love the character they love and I hate.)

I find it's somewhat easier to love something everybody hates, than it is to hate something everybody loves, because if you love something, at least you've got your own squee to hold onto. I refused to let other people take that from me, and I don't see why other people can't manage that. Why does what other people think matter SO MUCH, as long as they're not shoving it in your face? (And no, posting in their own LJs does not count as "shoving it in your face.")

So yes, I hate Castiel and wish he would die in a fire go away. I have not been shy about it, either. This doesn't mean I hated season 4. On the contrary, on the whole, I liked it much more than season 3. I just wish the show had handled this particular thing differently, and I'm sick of feeling like he's been shoved down my throat by fandom, despite my best efforts to avoid him.

If you have been reading my LJ for any length of time, you know what my post-episode posts are like, and if you can't bear that someone on the internet hates a character you love and might say something mean about him in their own LJ, then either learn to scroll past without clicking on something that's going to make you angry, or take me off your reading filter.

You control your reading.

I have tried very hard not to piss in other people's Cheerios on this subject - once I find out someone really likes the character, I shut up on the subject in their LJ, and I will continue to do so, despite my overwhelming desire to tell them how WRONG they are. I don't read and don't comment on fic that features the character prominently, and I don't air my opinions on Dean/Castiel, which I hate, in public (except for now, and in person, where you have the added entertainment of seeing me froth and flail like a crazy person).

If you think you are bracing for fandom fail in season 5, imagine how I feel. I am going to be surrounded by people who gush over something I loathe, and no matter how carefully I plan out my reading, I'm still going to run into it, because it's everywhere.

So no, I really don't feel bad for you. I'm too busy feeling bad for me.

Feel free to comment, as always, but it's possible I won't respond, since I feel like I've said what I needed to say on this particular issue.

I like Castiel, but I... really don't care if anyone else does. I find it silly that fans are threatened by other fans not sharing their interest in a character. Squee and let squee, people.

Absolutely. My interest in Castiel has increased, the more people have tried to tell me I was wrong, or sick, for enjoying the presence of the, er, rapist angel.

And tangentially, the ridiculous side-taking. *facepalm* No really, guys, I like Castiel and Sam. At the same time.

Totally. Maintaining one's own squee is occasionally discouraging, but in the end, very rewarding. And there's never enough to read of one's pairing, of course. But hating on others' OTP only makes for friction, and ignoring it means missing out on a lot of great fic. Oh well, you like what you like!

Ugh, it is always so tasteless when people hate on your favs in your space. And for the record, I loved Bela too.

You go right on hating Castiel and everything he stands for, I'll just ignore you on those days.

Honestly, after four years of pretty much not being able to read 90% of the episode reactions or meta discussions on my flist, I've become Zen about the whole thing. I enjoy the show for the reasons I enjoy it and don't pay attention to anyone else.

I understand the impulse because I certainly had it back in the day and still do - when someone is hating on things you like, you just want to defend! They just don't understand! I have left a lot of angry comments like that, actually. But not on someone's personal blog where they're talking about a fictional character, because really? I get peeved about the fanfiction the Enquirer and P*r*z Hilton publish as "true facts" because people believe that shit. But when it's "i don't like him, damn it!" or "i like her!," well, I already know my irritation at the Enquirer, et al, is an overreaction, so.

Oh, I totally agree with you - I was just saying that even when I feel the impulse, it's a) over shitty celebrity gossip, b) I know there's no point to the comments I leave pointing out they were lying, c) I have some excuse with celebrity gossip, but with TV shows, etc, it's characters we're talking about in our personal blogs. So even more pointless an impulse and one I'm not tempted to follow through on. I'm agreeing with you, swears! :)

I don't hate Castiel myself but I can see why others would not find him terribly interesting.

Me, what gets my goat is that there is hardly any Sam since Castiel came on the scene! I just really hope that changes this season.

Yeah, I was kind of neutral on Castiel for most of season four, but I was annoyed at the way his season's arc ended. He was Dean's Ruby, no? So, narrative-wise, it felt like he should have bookended Ruby's arc and betrayed Dean from the other side (and, you know, died when she did, thereby restoring the Sam and Dean balance to the show). It felt like a cop-out that he didn't.

I'm all annoyed at Castiel for really quixotic reasons, it feels weird.

I just don't get why people care. My first fandom was Angel and Angel was my favorite character. I had people on my flist that disliked/hated him, and I am one of those people who can't stand it when people talk shit about characters I loved. So, uh, I stopped reading their episode reviews because I knew it'd just piss me off. And the people on my flist that loved Spike and hated it when people disliked him? Well, they skipped my posts because it pissed them off. People either need to mellow out or just not click the cut-tags on their flists.
