The great thing about Gus is that he perfectly oscillates from playing the annoyed straight man to Shawn’s general insanity to yes-anding to an insane degree. For every moment where he says no Shawn, you did not hear that both ways there’s a moment where he, with no prompting, claims that his fictitious grandmother with a broken hip was teaching a line dancing class. For every time he says Shawn, stop messing around at work, there is a time where after Shawn says he’s been “looking at the man in the mirror”, Gus, in a move that never ever fails to make me laugh, with a completely straight face and no impact on the conversation, does the Michael Jackson “he-he”. He’s insane. He thinks he’s normal. He does 11 point turns. He’s a sympathetic crier.
I started watching Psych, and Shawn Spencer kind of gives me AOS Kirk vibes, especially from ST 2009.
i’ve literally had the exact same thought. i feel like the dynamic between shawn and gus is so aos jim and bones vibes.
i really feel like all the straw hats were so perfectly cast and well-written. luffy is absolute perfection, of course, and i also think that sanji was really good too, considering that he was only in the second half. i think they really cut through to the core of his character, imo, he’s fundamentally a deeply kind-hearted dreamer who’s chasing a fairy tale, with a hard outer shell of hot temper and irritability, and they understood that, you know? they toned down the right things for a live action adaptation, without taking away from his core character.
i love how sanji just goes with these guys he met like yesterday to follow their pretty navigator who just betrayed them and fights a bunch of fishmen - literally for people he met A DAY ago.
like, i know in the manga and anime it was exactly the same, but for some reason in live action it’s hitting harder. especially when garp turns up and sanji is the only straw hat who wasn’t there to find out who he is, so he must just be like. what?
i literally love the straw hats so much you don’t understand, those are my BABIES
opla really got that the fundamental thing about them is that they’re all so totally platonically in love with each other, like the love is so important and those actors spent the whole time giving each other (and especially luffy) heart eyes and i’m so here for it.
